Jonathan Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Sharon Kinkade

McLEANSBORO -- Dr. Sharon Kinkade, 67, of Valdosta, Ga., formerly of McLeansboro and Eldorado, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in South Georgia Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, in Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with the Rev. Leland Widick officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering or to the Pearlman Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Grace Jones

CARMI -- Grace Jones, 89, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in the White County Medical Center in Carmi. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Harry Anderson

GRAND TOWER -- Harry Anderson, 82, died at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Meredith Funeral Chapel in Grand Tower is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Ella Grant

MARION -- Ruth Ella Grant, 96, of Marion, passed away at 2:07 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. She was born on the family farm northeast of Marion on Dec. 28, 1908, the seventh child of Elijah Lodge and Sarah Ella (O'Neal) Grant. Miss Grant attended Western Star Elementary School and Marion junior high and high schools. After graduation she attended Southern Illinois Normal University and University of Illinois, where she graduated with a degree in home economics in the College of Agriculture. Miss Grant spent many years working for the University of Illinois Extension Service. She later worked for Southern Illinois University as a food service supervisor at Thompson Point residence halls. Miss Grant belonged to many business and professional organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daniel H. Brush Chapter, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Marion, the American Association of University Women, and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists. She was a charter member of the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois. She was also a lifetime member of the Williamson County Farm Bureau and was a Protestant. She is survived by six nieces and nephews and their spouses, Elizabeth and Jon Loomis of Creal Springs, Nanette and Carl Cottingham of Carterville, Wendell E. and Tammy Grant of Marion, Mary Jane and Javier Estrada of Marion, John D. and Carolyn Grant of Marion, and Richard L. and Cathy Grant of Carbondale; 17 great-nieces and -nephews; 19 great-great-nieces and -nephews; other family members; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Lodge Grant on April 28, 1943, and Sarah Ella Grant on Oct. 2, 1961; three sisters, Hessie Lelle Grant on Nov. 29, 1964, Mary Caroline Grant on Nov. 29, 1994, and Alice Louise Grant on Sept. 16, 2003; three brothers, Eugene F. Grant on May 15, 1969, Wendell Leon Grant on July 3, 1980, and Lodge Grant on June 19, 1994; one niece, Nancy M. Grant York on Aug. 1, 1997; and one nephew, William Lodge Grant in 2004. Arrangements for Ruth Ella Grant have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, located at 900 N. Court St. in Marion. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Carl Cottingham presiding. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and mailed in care of Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, P. O. Box 370, Marion, IL 62959. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Thomas McKenzie

MOUNT VERNON -- Thomas L. McKenzie, 84, died at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in Nature Trail Healthcare Center in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Kirk Cemetery in Ina, with the Revs. Everett Lemay and Mike Steed officiating. Those attending the services should go directly to the cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Johnston Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made to Logan Street Baptist Ministries.

Charles Killnan

CAVE-IN-ROCK -- Charles Killnan, 67, was found dead Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at home. Survivors include his mother, one sister, three brothers, two daughters, one son and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister and three brothers. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today in Mounds Cemetery.

Billy D. Hudgens

CARBONDALE -- Billy D. Hudgens, 79, of Edwardsville, formerly of Carbondale, born Dec. 9, 1925, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at home. Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, in Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville, with the Revs. Jim Coode and Mike Krewson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Edwardsville. Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Weber Funeral Home of Edwardsville was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hudgens was retired from Southern Illinois University. He had been the initial SIUE vice president for business and taught in the management department of the SIUE School of Business. He was a former clerk of the U. S. District Court of the Southern District of Illinois and previously worked in Carbondale as a mortgage banker associated with Mercantile Mortgage Company. More recently he had been a management consultant for the medical office of Michael Beatty, M. D., for nine years. Mr. Hudgens was a retired reservist, having served in the U. S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean action, where he received an individual citation for establishing and commanding the first message center for the Commander Naval Forces Far East at Yokosuka, Japan. He was treasurer of the SIUC Alumni Association for 10 years and a former member of the Edwardsville Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1989. He earned degrees from the Eden United Church of Christ, and for 10 years he was a trustee of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Hudgens was a 50-year member of the Masonic order. He served on the Madison Mutual Insurance Board and had been a board member of Clover Leaf Bank for 30 years. He was former secretary of the American Cancer Society, secretary of the SIUE Annuitants Chapter and president of Eden United Church of Christ Council, and he was a board member of the Edwardsville Senior Citizens. Mr. Hudgens was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Nell (Rowatt) Hudgens; one daughter, Charnell Woelfel; one sister, Jean Ellen Ebersohl; and one brother Halden Ralls. Survivors include his wife, Bettie (Walker) Hudgens, whom he married on June 10, 1950; one daughter and son-in-law, J'Deana and Jack Twesten of Glen Carbon; six grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob and Joanna Woelfel and Jada, Derek and Elise Twesten; and one son-in-law, David Woelfel of Edwardsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eden United Church of Christ, the Edwardsville YMCA or Gateway Hospice.

MURPHYSBORO -- Gary A. Brown, 55, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with Pastor Charles Allen of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Ellis Melvin

WEST FRANKFORT -- Ellis W. Melvin, 61, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in St. Louis University Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Pastor Alicia Smelcer officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Harvester Fellowship Tabernacle Church in West Frankfort and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Debra Walker

MURPHYSBORO -- Debra Walker, 47, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro. Arrangements are incomplete at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel.

Charles Oliver Cruse

DONGOLA -- Charles Oliver Cruse, 80, of Dongola, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born on Dec. 4, 1924, in Union County, the son of Harry G. and Millie (Bartsch) Cruse. He married Leota Smith on Oct. 18, 1947, in Union County. He retired from the Southern Illinois Electric Co-op and was a lifelong farmer. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Dongola American Legion and First Baptist Church of Dongola. He is survived by his wife, Leota; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gerald L. and Janet Cruse of Dongola and Gaylon C. Cruse of Anna; four grandchildren and their spouses, Lane and Deanna Cruse of Anna, Leslie and Stanley Treat of Dongola, Trenton Cruse and his fiancee, Ashley Theirett, of Perryville, Mo., and Treena Cruse and her fianc, Josh Ditto, of Anna; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Cruse of Elgin; three sisters, Mary Moreland of Anna, Grace Clark of Gainesville, Fla., and Barbara Penrod of Anna; one aunt, Pearl Cavaness; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Wayne Cruse, in 1980; one sister, Helen Reisch; and one daughter-in-law, Eileen Cruse. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery, with military rites conducted at the graveside by the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 Anna VFW. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Dongola.

Harry B. Montgomery Jr.

SESSER -- Harry B. Montgomery Jr., 76, who had recently returned home to Sesser, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in the St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Mr. Montgomery was born on Sept. 30, 1928, to Harry B. Sr. and Artie M. (Cockrum) Montgomery, in Barren Township in Franklin County. Mr. Montgomery was united in marriage to Imogene Boswell, his wife of 55 years, on Nov. 27, 1949, and she survives. They were blessed with four children, 11 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren: Terryl Montgomery and children Josh, Amanda and Ashley; Rhonda Hutson and husband Terry and children Ryan Huie and wife Jennifer and daughter Rylin, Joel Huie and wife Ammie and son Grant and Darren and Kaitlin Hutson; William B. 'Hoppy' and wife Lori Montgomery; Jennifer Montgomery Phillips and husband Mike and sons Christopher and Colton; and Marcy Arnett and husband Darren and children Adreanna Harvey and husband Jason and daughter Presleigh and Jeremy, Vanessa, Samantha, Jared, April and daughter Mekaela. Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by his brother, Billie Jean; three sisters, Ila Flatt and Alene and Wanda Montgomery; and two nephews, Farrell and Jim Flatt. Services for Mr. Montgomery will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in Davis Funeral Chapel, located on Illinois 148 and Park Street Road in Sesser. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Stephen Gray and Sister Connie Keyes officiating. Burial will be in Hammonds Cemetery.

Makayla Ann Morrison

GOREVILLE -- Makayla Ann Morrison, 10, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at home. Makayla was born on Oct. 4, 1994, in Carbondale, to Chris Moore and Brandy Flare. Makayla was in the fourth grade at Goreville Grade School. She attended the Goreville United Methodist Church. Makayla is survived by her mother, Brandy Flare of Goreville; her father, Chris Moore of Marion; her stepfather, Andy Morrison of Goreville; brother, Drew I. Morrison of Goreville; maternal grandparents, Donnie and Linda Flare of Virden, maternal grandmother, Janis Payne of Marion; paternal grandfather, Jerry Morrison of Goreville; paternal grandparents, Cathy and Harvey Moore of Marion; maternal great-grandmother, Sue Payne of Marion; several aunts and uncles; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Crystal Morrison. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Makayla's family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mary Virginia Holmes

MARION -- Mary Virginia Holmes, 86, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Whispering Oaks Retirement Home. She was born on June 30, 1918, in Holland, Mo., to Noble Henry and Hettie Mae (Stone) Capehart. She married Finis E. Holmes Jr. on Dec. 31, 1937, in Steele, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1998. She was retired, having worked for F. E. Holmes Construction for 32 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Mikie Holmes of Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Marsha J. and Jim Shotton of Marion; six grandchildren and their spouses, Darren and Misty Holmes, Craig and Kelly Shotton, Michelle Holmes, Jennifer and Bart Lincoln, and Melanie and Jeff Pecord, all of Marion, and Nichole and Erick Murphy of Nashville, Tenn.; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Pinnell Capehart of Holland, Mo.; and one sister, Ruby Lynn Hudson of Chattanooga, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Noble Coleman Capehart; and three sisters, Evelyn Moon, Glenda Smith and Dana Slintz. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Victor Long officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church General Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Helen Pickard

THOMPSONVILLE -- Helen H. Pickard, 92, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in Benton Healthcare Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Bob Mallicoat officiating. Burial will be in Knob Prairie Cemetery in Akin. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Knob Prairie Cemetery Association or the Alzheimer's Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Russell Butler

MARION -- Russell Butler, 90, of Marion, passed away at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Kevin McNeely officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Energy. Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. military rites will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post 1301 and American Legion Post 147. Mr. Butler was born on June 7, 1914, in Chicago, to Thomas Joseph and Elizabeth (Isbrandt) Butler. He married Edna Butler, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1991. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, June and John Wetton of Huntley and Betty Goldstein of Florida; one niece and her spouse, Dorothy and Kenneth McNeely of Marion; one nephew and his spouse, Kevin and Carla McNeely of Marion; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and his good friends and neighbors, F. A. and Louis Thornton and Jim and Eva Hindeman. Mr. Butler retired as a machinist in Chicago. He served our country during World War II, and he was an avid Cubs fan. Arlie Dean Calhoun

CARBONDALE -- Arlie Dean Calhoun, 47, of Merritt Island, Fla., died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home as the result of an accident. Memorial services were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Florida Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at the funeral home. Arlie was born in Carbondale. He had been a Brevard County resident since 1984. He had an A and P rating and graduated with a bachelor of science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Arlie served in the Air Force for four years. He worked at McDonnell Douglas in Saudi Arabia for two years and as an engineer at Kennedy Space Center for 21 years. Arlie is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his mother, Zona of Murphysboro; his father and stepmother, Arlie and Gloria of Murphysboro; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Brock of Murphysboro and Scott and Pat of Salem, Ohio; one sister and brother-in-law, Vicki and Donald Dale of Du Quoin; six nieces; five nephews; and many friends and family. SPARTA -- Martha Gibson, 94, of St. Charles, Mo., formerly of Sparta, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Mount Carmel Home for Senior Living in St. Charles. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, in McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Matthew J. Calandro

MURPHYSBORO -- Matthew J. Calandro, 83, of Murphysboro, passed away at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in St. Andrew Church, with burial in St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and until 9:45 a.m. Friday at Pettett Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Church. Matthew was born on March 11, 1921, in Murphysboro, to Joseph Calandro and Clara (Gallo) Calandro. He had been a professional painter. He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church of Murphysboro, and he enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles. Mr. Calandro is survived by one brother, Constantine 'Seven' Calandro of Joliet; one sister, Josephine Romano of Sparta; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Calandro of West Frankfort and Henrietta, Doris and Mary Calandro, all of Murphysboro; and many nieces and nephews, including C. J. Calandro of Murphysboro. He was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Mann; six brothers, Andrew, Earl, Tony, Paul, Joseph and Mike Calandro; infant twin sisters; and his parents.

CARBONDALE -- Eugene 'Gene' P. Pease, 82, of Carbondale, formerly of Marion, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Helia Healthcare in Carbondale. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with Pastor Sam Foskey officiating. Burial will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion, with military rites. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary Virginia Butler

CHESTER -- Mary Virginia Butler, 85, died at 12:43 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. As per her wishes, she will be cremated. Burial will be held at a later date. Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or to First Presbyterian Church in Chester.
