Jack Dale 'Jackie' Rude
CARBONDALE -- Jack Dale 'Jackie' Rude, 69, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at home. Jack is survived by his faithful companion, Debbie Sedlar; dear friends, Harvey and Annette Conder, Chris and Helen Wisinski, Chris Jr., Corrine and Craig Wisinski, Steve Jones, Tyler Young; and many dear friends from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where he was a member. He spent the biggest part of his life in Carbondale, where he made many dear friends and acquaintances since 1972. He was born in Harrisburg to Marie and Kelly Rude on Feb. 2, 1935. He became disabled as a young boy from a car accident. He spent seven years in Chicago while receiving therapy at the Illinois Research Hospital. His life took him to many areas of Illinois. He lived in a shelter care home in Anna before coming to his beloved Carbondale. He gave his entire life in totally unselfish love and service to this community and to all whom would befriend him. He worked in kitchens at University City and restaurants on the Carbondale Strip. He worked for Pepsi Cola and Coke as a driver assistant. He was a faithful attendant and helper at Jeffrey Laundromat for 25 years. On March 2, 1982, he was baptized and became a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, traveling, collecting cans, painting nature pictures and good food. He was considered among his peers as one of God's truly faithful servants. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a. m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale, with the Rev. Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will follow in the Carterville City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a. m. until the time of service today at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale. CARTERVILLE -- Joe Ansinelli, 45, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at St. Louis University Hospital from injuries received in a head-on collision on Illinois 13, while riding his
motorcyle

Joe was born on July 6, 1958, in Herrin, to Joe and Lois (Hopper) Ansinelli. He married Vivien Cowan on Dec. 12, 1981, in Carterville. He is survived by his wife, Vivien, of Carterville; two daughters, Randi and Kelly Ansinelli, both of Carterville; mother, Lois Ansinelli of Herrin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rusty and Carol Ansinelli of Herrin and John and Janet Ansinelli of Herrin; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Billy Woodhouse of Herrin; father-in-law, Bill Cowan of Carterville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim and Cyndi Cowan of Biloxi, Miss., and Dave and Debbie Cowan of Chapel Hill, N. C. ; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe and his mother-in-law, Lenora 'Snookie' Cowan. Joe worked as a prison guard at the U. S. Penitentiary at Marion for 18 years. His fellow guards will honor him by standing guard at his casket. He was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville. He honorably served his country in the Illinois National Guard. Joe was an avid outdoorsman who loved to go fishing, camping and ride his
motorcyle. He was a Notre Dame sports fanatic. Joe was a devoted family man and always said that his greatest achievement were his daughters, Randi and Kelly. He will be greatly missed.
John Eugene 'J.E.' Brooks
CARBONDALE -- John Eugene 'J. E. ' Brooks, 91, of Murphysboro, formerly of Carbondale, passed away at 2:30 p. m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Oak Grove Rehab Center. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale, with the Rev. Larry Gilbert officiating. Interment will be held in the Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. today, June 17, 2004, at the church. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, and will be accepted by the funeral home. Meredith Funeral Home of Carbondale is assisting the family with arrangements. J. E. was born May 16, 1913, in Wayside, to Louie Elsworth and Carrie Viola (Fly) Brooks. He married Blanche Irene Tyner on Sept. 20, 1931, in Union County. She preceded him in death on Aug. 10, 1981. Later he was united in marriage with Marjorie Ruth Lochhead. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Ruth Brooks of Murphysboro; two sons, Wayne Brooks of De Soto and John Robert Brooks of Dover, Del. ; two daughters, Betty Donley of Indiana, Pa., and Jan Dulaney of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Carol Hoffman of St. Clair, Mo., and Margie Buntin of Akin; six step-grandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Blanche, J. E. is preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Gary Brooks; one brother, Lawrence Brooks; and one great- granddaughter, Sophia Reilly. John was a 61-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale. He was a 50-plus year member of both Shekinah Lodge 251 of Carbondale and of Carpenters Local 638 of Marion. Mr. Brooks was employed by J&L Robinson Development and Construction Co. of Carbondale. He worked as a supervisor for several years before his retirement. John enjoyed working with wood at home as well as on the job. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

CARBONDALE -- Lena Mae McKinley, 87, died at 10 p. m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in the Metron of Kalamazoo Nursing Home in Kalamazoo, Mich. Services will be at 1 p. m. today at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Carbondale, with Dr. Norman S. Greer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. at the church. MARION -- Barbara Green, 72, of Marion passed away at 8:05 a. m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Graveside services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Arnold View Cemetery. Barbara was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Williamson County to L. C. and Hattie Mae (Nelson) Boatright. She married Donald Green April 20, 1952, in Marion. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal University. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Jennifer Green, Brian and Jackie Green and Jeff and Tonya Green, all of Marion; daughter, Tara Green of Marion; grandchildren, Jennifer Minton and Justin Green, both of Marion, Ryan Green, Brooklyn Green and Jordan Green, all of Herrin, Benjaman Green and Joshua Green; great-grandchild, Austin Minton of Marion; and sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and John Barth of Delaware. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and great-aunt, Neva Sanders.

Mary Lou Keiser
MURPHYSBORO -- Mary Lou Keiser, 91, passed away at 6:45 p. m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 1 p. m. today in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Friends may call until the hour of services today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or The Therapy Center, Highway 13, Carterville, IL 62918. She was born on Jan. 8, 1913, in Jonesboro to David and Nancy (Sorrels) Fisher. Mary Lou had worked at the Shoe Corral or the former B & B Shoe Store. She retired in 1977. Mrs. Keiser was a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Loyal Berean Sunday school class in Murphysboro. She was a very good cook, and she was especially known for her great apple pies. She won several different ribbons in the Apple Festival Apple Pie Contest, where she won first place in 1995. Mary Lou married Harold Birggs on June 28, 1932, and he preceded her in death. She later married Murl E. Keiser on June 17, 1938, in Wicliffe, Ky., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1989. She is survived by three children, Marylyn Pittman and her husband Tom Pittman of Murphysboro, James L. Briggs and his wife Mary Briggs of Muncie, Ind., and Murl L. Keiser and his wife Marlene Kesier of Imperial, Mo. ; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.

Helen was born March 15, 1912, in Goreville, to John Sidney and Roberta (Lowry) Benson. She married Kenneth Underwood on Dec. 11, 1932, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1988. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Wooldrige of Longview, Texas; one son-in-law, Paul Hutchison of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Tim Hutchison of Lavon, Texas, and Terry Hutchison of Longview; and four great-grandchildren. Helen was a member of Goreville United Methodist Church and the Goreville Senior Citizens. She has lived in Goreville most of her life.
Jesse 'Eldon' Smith
ELKVILLE -- Jesse E. 'Eldon' Smith, 68, passed away at 11:30 a. m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Eldon was a service technician at National Cash Register Company and had owned Smith Cash Register for 10 years. He was a member of South County Line Christian Church in Carbondale. He was a U. S. Navy veteran. He was born March 29, 1936, at Makanda, the son of Arvel and Otha (Patrick) Smith. He married Carol Marie Martie on Feb. 15, 1958, in Hallidayboro, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1983. He is survived by two daughters, Denise Crews and husband Robert of Carterville and Patty Manis and husband Randy of Elkville; four sisters, Ardell Savitz of Carbondale, Eleanor Robinson of Carbondale, Shena Weshinskey of Carbondale, and Lela Mae Lowry of Crown Point, Ind. ; three brothers, Lee Smith of Carbondale, Frank Smith of De Soto, and Rudy Smith of Carbondale; a father-in-law, Clyde Martie of Elkville; three grandchildren, Jessica Hart, Bobbi Crews and Jordan Crews; and one step-granddaughter, Sara Manis. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one daughter, Mary Lynn Smith. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Hallidayboro United Methodist Church, with the Rev. She was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Christopher, the daughter of Albert Hess and Verda Britton. She married Robert Pulliam. He preceded her in death. Survivors include children, Cindy Collier of Christopher and Tom Tisdale of Rockford; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One son, Donald Pulliam and three brothers, Roy Hess, Carl 'Bake' Hess and Albert Hess Jr., preceded her in death.
Hilda A. Stein
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Hilda A. Stein, 95, died at 2:05 a. m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, in the Pinckneyville Health Care Center. Hilda was born in Conant on Oct. 17, 1908, a daughter of George Henry and Lavinia Alice (Bergfeld) Berg. She married Sylvester Stein on May 9, 1934, at the St. Bruno Catholic Church rectory in Pinckneyville, and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1993. During her lifetime, she was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church, a teacher for over 40 years in Perry County one-room schools, a 'Happy Loyalettes' 4-H leader for many years, enjoyed dancing, sewing, crocheting, and playing the piano. Survivors include two sons, Frank Stein of Pinckneyville and Sylvester George Stein and his wife Carolyn of Millstadt; two daughters, Maredith McDaniel of Merced, Calif., and LaVinia Vanetti and her husband Donald of Parkville, Mo. ; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Cleta Mohr and Mabel Wilson; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Stein. Friends may call at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on today from 5 to 9 p. m. and on Thursday from 8 to 9:30 a. m. SPARTA -- Marion W. 'Bo' Casten, 59, died at 1:55 a. m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta, with Pastor Bruce Cameron officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery
in Chester. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p. m. today and 7:30 a. m. until the hour of service Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Casten was born on Feb. 18, 1945, to Wilbert and Elsie Casten. He married Brenda Schoenberger on Feb. 18, 1967, in Chester. She survives. He was employed at the Lewis Brothers Bakery as a sales manager. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sparta. Survivors include his wife; his step-father, Lloyd Smith of Chester; son, Brian Casten of Sparta; brothers, Gene and wife Sandi of Casten and West Dundee, Bruce and wife Diana Casten of Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Marilynn Howell and husband Richard of St. Peters, Mo.; grandchild, Malory. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bradley. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, The Heart Fund, and St. Jude's Children Hospital.
Emma Sue Trimble Furst
CARBONDALE -- Mrs. Emma Sue Trimble Furst, 88, a retired bookkeeper, died at her son's home in Metairie, La., on Tuesday, April 20, 2004. Mrs. Furst was born in Fulton, Ky., the daughter of the late Lego and Ruby Trimble. She resided in Carbondale for more than 70 years before moving to Metairie four years ago. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Vince Furst; a son, Stephen Furst of Metairie; a daughter, Su Lynn Hanson of Kansas City, Kan. ; four grandchildren, Cynthia Brunet, Jacob Hanson, Lindsay Konan and Steven Stuart; and four great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a graveside service at 1 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at the Oakland Cemetery
in Carbondale.
Bobby W. Milburn
WEST FRANKFORT -- Bobby W. Milburn, 77, died at 6:15 p. m. Monday, June 14, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Carrier Mills, to William McCellan Milburn and Ruby ( Lollar ) Milburn. He married Norma ( Clark ) Milburn on Dec. 31, 1970, in Pittsburg, and she survives. Surviving besides his wife Norma, are two sons, Rick Milburn and wife Mary Anne of Galena, and Terry Milburn of O'Fallon; daughter, Jeanine Allsup and husband ames of Belleville; a step son, Danny Day and wife Anita of West Frankfort; a stepdaughter, Kathy Hudgens of West Frankfort; also, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shelby Livers of Kankakee and Sybil Demsey of Benton. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and by two granddaughters, Lisa Day and Kim Bejmovicz. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in West Frankfort and the Masonic Lodge of Carrier Mills. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was aboard the USS Carpolletti. Mr. Milburn was a retired supervisor for the Freeman Coal Company and was also a licensed airplane pilot. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Tim Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery

Dean Betts
VIENNA -- Dean Elliott Betts, 19, passed away at 12:15 p. m. Sunday near Vienna, the result of a
motorcyle accident. Dean was born Sept. 28, 1984, in Paducah. He was the son of Randy Betts and Jill (Trovillion) Betts. He is survived by his parents of Vienna; a sister, Teale Marie Betts of Vienna; a brother, Evin Lane Betts of Vienna; his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Sally Trovillion of Vienna; his paternal grandmother, Sue Betts of Cambria; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and many dear friends. Dean was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Dean Betts; and his paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Dorothy Teal. Dean was a 2003 graduate of Vienna High School. Dean had served as homecoming king, prom king and was a former class president. Dean had recently completed his freshman year at Shawnee Community College, where he served as a student ambassador. He was employed by Endrizzi Lawn Care Service. Dean was a member of the Gilead Church near Simpson. He enjoyed spending time with his friends. Dean made every day count and he loved making people laugh. Services will be held at 2 p. m. today at the Gilead Church near Simpson, with the Rev. Bud McDannel officiating. Burial will be in the Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 a.m. to noon today at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, and one hour prior to service Wednesday.
