CARBONDALE -- Arlene Myrna Foster, 72, passed away at 12:13 p. m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at home. Arlene was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Paterson, N. J., to Louis and Anna (Lefkowitz) Rubin. She married Harold Marvin Foster on June 27, 1954, in Fair Lawn, N. J. He survives in Carbondale. Other survivors include one son, David Graham Foster of West Bloomfield, Mich.; three daughters, Sara Jo Barkey of Englewood, Colo., Miriam Kay Ricket of Mentor, Ohio, and Debra Ruth Foster of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; one brother, A. Michael Rubin of Wayne, N. J.; seven grandchildren; and one step-grandchild. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents. Services were held at 3 p. m., Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the chapel at Clover Hill Park Cemetery
in Birmingham, Mich. Rabbi Joseph Krakoff officiated. Interment services followed at Clover Hill Park Cemetery
in Birmingham. A memorial service will be held in the near future in Carbondale. Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale assisted the family with arrangements.
William Odle
TILDEN -- William J. Odle, 79, died at 8:10 a. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, in Coulterville Care Center. Services will be at 11 a. m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Tilden, with the Rev. Gerald Savage officiating. Burial will be in Tilden City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p. m. Thursday and from 7:30 to 9 a. m. Friday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Tilden and from 10 to 11 a. m. at the church. Memorials may be made to Tilden Scholarship Fund or Coulterville Care Center Activity Fund. Mr. Odle was retired from Peabody Coal Company. He was an
Army veteran of World War II. He was a Methodist. Fire Controlman William J. Odle enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard on July 2, 1942, at the age of 17 during World War II. He was discharged on Aug. 1, 1946. He was stationed in the Pacific areas and in China. His jobs were in Mark II radar and telephone systems. He was involved in moving troops to battle areas. He received the American Area Asiatic Pacific Coast Guard Good Conduct, World War II Victory, China Service, Expert Rifle, and Expert Pistol Medals. Serving as a corporal during the
Korean War, he was a squad leader for M. Co. Third Battalion, First Calvary Division, serving in the U. S.
Army from April 11, 1949, to Oct. 30, 1952. Odle was wounded on April 9, 1951. He received the United Nations Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct, Combat Infantry Marksmen Badge, Rifle Bar, Korean Service Medal with three battle stars and Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the Coulterville VFW Post 6856 in Coulterville where he was past commander for over 20 years and past quartermaster for the last nine years. He also served as District 14 Quartermaster for 38 years. He was also a member of the Tilden Coon Club, Tennessee Brinal Association and belonged to the Laborers Union for 50 years. He was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Tilden, the son of Jerval Odle and Olive M. Rose Odle. He married Delores J. Sparling on July 3, 1949, in Osceola, Ark. She preceded him in death on May 9, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Hood and husband Jack of Sparta and Carolyn Fisher and husband Jim of Sparta; one son, Edward Odle and friend Peggy Wilson of Steeleville; three grandchildren, Shannon Hood and wife Becca of Sparta, Jennifer Hood of Carbondale and Jamie Welborn and husband Riley of Chester; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Hod of Sparta and Reed Welborn of Chester; two step-grandchildren, Holly and Sarah Fisher; one brother, James B. Odle and wife Loretta of Lenzburg; two nephews, Jeff Odle and wife Sue of Sparta and Jim Odle and wife Janet of Winter Haven, Fla.; one great-niece, Katie Odle of Sparta; one great-nephew, James P. Odle of Winter Haven, Fla.; and two aunts, Mary Williams of Detroit, Mich., and Virginia Brown of Tampa, Fla. His parents preceded him in death.

WILLISVILLE -- Wilma L. White, 72, died at 12:40 p. m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital of Chester. Services will be held at 2 p. m. today at Central Baptist Church in Willisville, with the Rev. Willis Durbin officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope Gardens in Willisville. Visiting hours will be from 7:30 a. m. to noon today at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava , and 1 to 2 p. m. today at the church. Wilma was born on Aug. 19, 1931, the daughter of Bill and Jeannie (Cornwall) Hamilton in East St. Louis. She married Russel Glen White on Oct 9, 1964, and he passed away on May 24, 1982. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Willisville. She belonged to the WWO of Willisville and the Willisville Library Board. She is survived by her four children, Charles Edward Summer, Susan and Jerry Qualls, Robert Summer, and Rebecca and Bill Chandler, all of Willisville; five grandchildren, Jimmy Summer of Fort Campbell, Ky., Jennifer and Rodney Barker of Steeleville, Issac Chandler, Alycia Summer and Katlin Summer of Willisville; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Hayes Summer of Steeleville; one brother, Willard and Norma Hamilton of Grant Fork; one sister, Wilda Lee and Nolan Kelso of Bella Vista, Ark.; three nieces; five great-nieces, and two great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

HERRIN -- Ruth Esther (Wood) Duff, 73, of Carmel, Ind., died Tuesday, June 22, 204 in Riverwalk Village in Noblesville, Ind. Services will be private. Ruth was born Oct. 1, 1930, in Santa Ana, to Willis J. and Stella Wood. Survivors include three daughters, Jody Bonner of Heber, Utah, Sandra Sanders of Carmel and Cindy Younkins of Dresden; a son, Michael J. Duff of Herrin; a sister, Willene Sachez; two brothers, Hershel Wood and Jimmy Wood; best friend, Evelyn Mann; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death.

MOUNT VERNON -- Loy Curtis Hancock, 86, formerly of Sesser, died at 2:35 p. m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Raleigh Cemetery
in Raleigh, with the Rev. Mike Steed officiating. Those attending the graveside services are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Wednesday. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Tuesday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. He was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Saline County, the son of Lloyd Hancock and Minnie (Owen) Hancock. He married Mary Kaye (Barnett) Hancock on Sept. 9, 1944. She died on Jan. 26, 1984. He retired in 1980 as a teacher from Sesser High School. He was a veteran of the U. S.
Army serving during World War II from 1941 until 1945. He was a gunnery instructor during his service. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Bloomington, the National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his son, Larry S. Hancock and wife Nancy of Mount Vernon; granddaughter, Valerie Kaye Hancock of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Veala DeNeal of Harrisburg, and Opal Carbone of Bellflower, Calif.; three nieces and a nephew also survive. His parents and two brothers, Herschel Hancock and Alvis Hancock preceded him in death. David R. Butler
MURPHYSBORO -- David R. Butler, 89, died at 3:35 p. m. in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born on Aug. 12, 1914, in Jackson County, the son of Francis Butler and Julia Boucher Butler. On Dec 24, 1941, he was married to Velma Crowell. Mr. Butler retired from the Missouri Pacific RR (Now the Union Pacific) as Supervisor of Heavy Equipment. He was a member of Lodge 498 AF & AM of Murphysboro and the United Methodist Church. He loved to fish and work in his garden and he was especially fond of entertaining his great-grandchildren. Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Butler of Murphysboro; two grandchildren, Kellie S. Ellis of Gorham and Willard F. Harris, IV of Ava; four brothers, Daniel Butler of Mascoutah, William of Red Bud, Walter of Mascoutah, and Urban Butler of Gorham; and one sister, Frances Hubbard of Niles, Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma, in 2001, and by a brother Boyd Butler in 1989. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday in the Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. today with a Masonic Funeral Service at 7 p. m. Albert Jenkins
MARION -- Albert Ralph Jenkins, 77, passed away at 6:45 p. m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Roy Baker officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the funeral home. Mr. Jenkins was born on March 30, 1927, in Wales, United Kingdom, to Albert Ralph and Doris Mae (Walters) Jenkins. Survivors include his wife, Lois Jenkins; daughters, Jacki Hardy, Vicki Rainaro and Jennifer Johnson; step-sons, Bruce, Richard Jr., David and Edward Hoffmann; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Jenkins studied for a short period to be a priest in the Church of England and left that when the war broke out. He served in the British Navy. He was educated in England. He studied electrical engineering at Alton Technical College, and also attended Battersea School of Refrigeration. He began his career as a sales engineer and project manager for a major research laboratory. In 1955 he moved to the United States and eventually became a U. S. citizen. He was an instructor in basic refrigeration at Coyne Technical College in Chicago and worked at Application Engineering Corporation in Wooddale. His love for the Lord led him to the ministry in 1984, where, with his wife, Lois, founded the New Hope Church in Skokie. He served as assistant chaplain at Cook County Hospital for two years and ministered at the Cook County Jail for several years. He worked with the Prison Fellowship at Dixon, Dwight, Lincoln, Logan, Shawnee and Vienna Correctional Centers. He moved his ministry to Goreville, where he started the New Hope Ranch. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Association of Christian Counselors from 1994 to 2003, National Chaplains Association from 1995 to 1999, and Marion Memorial Hospital Chaplains Corporation where he served as president for one year.

MARION -- William Ray George, 82, of Casselberry, Fla., passed away Monday, June 21, 2004, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Born in Marion, he moved to Casselberry, Fla., from Carbondale, in 1970. He was a real estate broker and a U. S.
Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Casselberry. He is survived by his son, William Mark George of Deland, Fla; daughter, Diane Thornton, of Winter Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Jo Riddle of Sherwood, Ark., and Emma Ruth Kissack of Rochelle; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Services will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the Community United Methodist Church, in Casselberry, Fla., with Pastor Nick Thompson officiating. Interment will be held Thursday in the Florida National Cemetery

ENERGY -- Lucille Thornton, 88, of Energy, died at 11:35 p. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Parkway Manor in Marion. Lucille was born on May 26, 1916, in Marion to Eldon P. and Lydia Candis (Norman) Odum. She married John Thornton on April 18, 1951, in Arkansas. He survives of Energy. Mrs. Thornton, along with her husband, formerly owned and operated Thornton's Market in Herrin prior to their retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Energy. Survivors include husband, John Thornton of Energy; son and daughter-in-law, Johnie L. and Marty Thornton of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bob Stricklin of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Joyce Watson of Herrin; eight grandchildren; Russell and Jennifer Watson Jr. of Herrin, Steve and Kathy Watson of Herrin, Sheree Watson of Indiana, Debra and Steve Dingrando of Marion, John Allen and Denise Murry Jr. of Energy, Bryan and Amy Thornton of Columbus, Ohio, Chris Thornton of Herrin and Angela Thornton of Herrin; 10 great-grandchildren; niece, Leana Odum of Marion; and nephew, Raymond McCormick of Marion. JOHNSTON CITY -- Lloyd Fowler, 52, of Belleville, formerly of Johnston City, died at 10:10 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at his family home. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. today, June 22, 2004, at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. There will be no funeral services. Per his request his body will be cremated at a later date. Lloyd was born on Feb. 3, 1952, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of J. L. and Wanda (Canaan) Fowler. He has been with His loving partner Darlene (Lawrence) Absher Conner for 24 years. She survives. He was a self-employed contractor and a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He graduated Ottumwa High School in 1970. He is survived by his parents of Ottumwa, Iowa; two sons, Travis L. Fowler and wife Patty of Hobart, Ind, and Matthew Absher and Jennifer of Shiloh; four grandchildren, Danielle, Austin, Gage, and Cole; one sister, Diana Barnett and husband Steve of Ottumwa, Iowa; one brother, David Fowler and wife Cindy of Hurst; two nieces, Tami Lee Fowler, and Lori Lee Fowler; four nephews, Craig Barnett, David Barnett, Toby Barnett, and Cody Barnett; numerous other nieces and nephews; a father-in-law, Lester Lawrence and Lucy of Johnston City; a sister-in-law, Edna Frost and husband Randy of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother-in-law, Robert Lawrence and wife Donna of Johnston City; a sister-in-law, Elaine Helms of Johnston City; a sister-in-law.
