Stanley 'Barry' Konneker
MURPHYSBORO -- Stanley B. 'Barry' Konneker, 68, passed away at 4:09 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at Oak Grove in Carbondale. His body has been cremated. Private services will be held at the family cemetery. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. He was born on Feb. 28, 1936, in Carlinville, to Stanley Oscar Konneker and Julia Adelle (Barrick) Konneker. Mr. Konneker is survived by one son, Clayton Barry Konneker; two brothers, Gregory P. Konneker and Douglas Konneker; three sisters, Carolyn Hallbauer, Martha Jean McCormack and Judith Hilst. He was preceded in death by his parents. Stanley Konneker was a classicist in his enjoyment of music, art, architecture, food and drink, and almost anything made of wood. 'Barry,' as known in this area, was a serious jack of all trades. A craftsman whose professional work ranged from the most basic repair tasks to those involving fine restoration. His several personal collections reflected his appreciation for the functionally beautiful and he was adept in the use of the array of tools and materials used in his activities. Born and raised on a family farm, Barry was a veteran of the U. S.
Army, a budding archeologist with studies in the formal program at Southern Illinois University and an amateur linguist. He will be missed.
Mary Travelstead
MURPHYSBORO -- Mary Rado Aydt Travelstead, 92, of Murphysboro, died Monday, June 21, 2004, after a month-long illness. She died peacefully in the home of her granddaughter, Kirsten Miller, of Carbondale. Mary Rado was born March 20, 1912, in Dahlgren, to Rufus and Laura (Irwin) DeWitt. She married Charles 'Cy' L. Aydt on Feb. 17, 1931. She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in Dahlgren, from 1945 until 1960. They then moved to Elgin, where they were both employed at the Elgin Mental Health Center. Charles 'Cy' died on Jan. 20, 1962. Mary continued working at the Elgin Mental Health Center until her retirement in 1976. Mary Rado then moved to Carbondale, where she met and married Edward H. Travelstead. They were very active in square dancing and traveled extensively until his death on Oct. 1, 1980. Mary Rado was a graduate of McLeansboro High School and later received an associate's degree in mental health from Elgin Community College. She was a member of the University Baptist Church, the Retired State Employees Association, and the AARP. She served for many years as a volunteer with the Good Samaritan House in Carbondale, where she was also a board member for four years. Mary Rado was a loving and inspirational role model for all generations of her family, and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Wilma Messersmith of Lincoln, Neb.; her sons, Dr. Roger Aydt of Silverdale, Wash., and Stanley Aydt of Carbondale; her granddaughters, Sue Wilkerson of Elgin; Dana Pratt of Lincoln, Neb.; Kirsten Miller of Carbondale; Nicole Klein of Edwardsville; Hilary Aydt of Bloomington, Ind.; and grandsons Roger Wilkerson of South Elgin, Chris Pratt of Spring Creek, Nev.; Frank Pratt of Lincoln, Neb.; Greg Aydt of Seabrook, Texas; Brian Aydt of Astoria, Ore. She is also survived by 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her daughter, Audrey Wilkerson; and her grandchildren, Randy Wilkerson, Mike Wilkerson, Mark Pratt and Valerie Evans. Services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. Sam Foskey officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a. m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Odd Fellow Cemetery

Josephine 'Bobbie' Andrews
EBENEZER -- Josephine 'Bobbie' Andrews, 83, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at home. Josephine was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, Jackson County Home Extension, Chester Hospital Auxiliary, Reid's Pinochle Card Club and was a Western Egyptian Volunteer and a Poll Judge. She was born on Dec. 4, 1920, in Ebenezer, the daughter of Joseph and Corenne (Vogelsang) Vickers. Rev. Taylor once said, 'Surely, Josephine Vickers was the most beloved child ever reared in Ebenezer. 'Because of serious illness at the age of 15, she was unable to complete her high school education. Proudly, at age 76, Josephine earned her GED with high honors. She married Chesteen Andrews on Nov. 18, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1980. She is survived by three daughters, Cynthia and husband Walter Dierks of Atlanta, Nancy and husband Roy Dierks of Percy, and Sally Polosky of Ebenezer; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Andrews also of Ebenezer; grandchildren, Michael and wife Tina Dierks, David Dierks, Dean and wife Denise Andrews, Carol Andrews, Glenn (Tammy) Andrews, Matthew Polosky, Carrie and David Holder, and Sheba and husband R. D.; great-grandchildren, Nichole Andrews, Ashley Andrews and Chett Andrews; one sister, Mary Alice Lawder and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and James Coffey, Florence and wife Ollie Stegelmeyer; brother and sister-in-law, John and Jessie Guthman; and brother-in-law, Shelby Lawder. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday June 23, 2004, at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Ebenezer, with the Rev. Cecil Dunning officiating. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery

WILLISVILLE -- Wilma L. White, 72, died at 12:40 p. m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital of Chester. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Central Baptist Church in Willisville, with the Rev. Willis Durbin officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope Gardens in Willisville. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 9 p. m. today and 7:30 a. m. to noon on Wednesday at the Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava , and 1 to 2 p. m. Wednesday at the church. Wilma was born on Aug. 19, 1931, the daughter of Bill and Jeannie (Cornwall) Hamilton in East St. Louis. She married Russel Glen White on Oct 9,1964, and he passed away on May 24, 1982. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Willisville. She belonged to the WWO of Willisville and the Willisville Library Board. She is survived by her four children, Charles Edward Summer of Willisville, Susan and Jerry Qualls of Willisville, Robert Summer of Willisville, Rebecca and Bill Chandler of Willisville; five grandchildren, Jimmy Summer of Fort Campbell, Ky., Jennifer and Rodney Barker of Steeleville, Isaac Chandler of Willisville, Alycia Summer of Willisville, and Katlin Summer of Willisville; one great-granddaughter, Nicole Hayes Summer of Steeleville; one brother, Willard and Norma Hamilton of Grant Pork; one sister, Wildalce and Nolan Kelso of Bella Vista, Ark.; three nieces; five great-nieces, and two great-nephews. Clarence Ward
ENERGY -- Clarence E. Ward, 70, of Energy, died at 4 a. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at home with his family. Clarence was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Herrin, to James Clarence and Edith Odessa (Sellars) Ward. He married Sarah Loretta Kinley on March 29, 1952, in Pocahontas, Ark. Mr. Ward was a retired Illinois state trooper, having worked from 1965 until his retirement in 1989. He also worked as director of security at Illinois Centre mall in Marion from 1991 to 2000. He formerly worked at South Side Lumber in Herrin during the early 1950s. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Marion and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 41. Survivors include wife, Sarah Loretta Ward of Energy; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Roy Jack of Energy; granddaughter and husband, Charity and Rob Finley of Lombard; grandson, Caleb Hodges of Centralia; mother, Odessa Ward of Energy; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Linda Ward of Thompsonville; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bob Ellery of Energy; extended family, Louisa and Budgy Murray and sons of Herrin; several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends; and very special man's best friend, his dog, 'D. J. Ward. 'He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Kevin D. Ward; sister, Barbara Dye and two brothers, Russell and Robert Ward. Services will be held at 10 a. m. today at the First Apostolic Church in Marion. The Rev. R. G. Walls will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday at the church. STEELEVILLE -- Jo Ellen Heggemeier, 54, died at 12:18 p. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at home. Memorials will be at 7 p. m. Tuesday, June 22, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sparta, with the Rev. Karen Knodt officiating. Mrs. Heggemeier was a medical technologist at Sparta Community Hospital for 34 years. She was an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Association of Bioanalysts, Randolph County Ambulance Board and a boardmember of Union Cemetery. She was born June 6, 1950, in Sparta, to Wilber A. Wiley and Elberta L. (Hawthorne) Wiley. She married Cecil E. Heggemeier on Aug. 11, 1973, in Sparta. He survives of Sparta. Other survivors include one sister, Jane Ann Boyd and husband George of Sparta; one niece, Rachel Claire Giffhorn and husband Neil of Waterloo; special cousin, Ruby McDill of Blair and two daughters, Carolyn and Donna. Her parents preceded her in death.

BELLEVILLE -- Lloyd Fowler, 52, of Belleville, formerly of Johnston City, died at 10:10 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at home. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. There will be no funeral services. Per his request his body will be cremated at a later date. Lloyd was born on Feb. 3, 1952, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of J. L. and Wanda (Canaan) Fowler. He has been with his loving partner Darlene (Lawrence) Absher Conner for 24 years. She survives. He was a self-employed contractor and a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He graduated Ottumwa High School in 1970. He is survived by his parents of Ottumwa; two sons, Travis L. Fowler and wife Patty of Hobart, Ind, and Matthew Absher and Jennifer of Shiloh; four grandchildren, Danielle, Austin, Gage, and Cole; one sister, Diana Barnett and husband Steve of Ottumwa; one brother, David Fowler and wife Cindy of Hurst; two nieces, Tami Lee Fowler, and Lori Lee Fowler; four nephews, Craig Barnett, David Barnett, Toby Barnett, and Cody Barnett; numerous other nieces and nephews; a father-in-law, Lester Lawrence and Lucy of Johnston City; a sister-in-law, Edna Frost and husband Randy of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother-in-law, Robert Lawrence and wife Donna of Johnston City; a sister-in-law, Elaine Helms of Johnston City; a sister-in-law. Robert Swaar
MURPHYSBORO -- Robert A. Swaar, 89, of Murphysboro, died at 3 p. m. Friday, June 18,2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He was born on Monday, March 22, 1915, in Murphysboro, the son of Loring Swaar and Myrtle Elenora (Wagner) Swaar Jarrett (both deceased). He was a retired truck driver for Bost Trucking. He served in the U. S.
Army in World War II. He married Alma Mae Weil on Dec. 30, 1949. She died on Dec. 28, 2000. He was a member of the Berean Christian Church Murphysboro and the American Legion Post 127 Murphysboro. Services will be at 2 p. m. today at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Mark Wingo officiating. Friends may call from 11 a. m. today until the hour of services at the funeral home. Dean 'Dino' Northcutt
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Dean Northcutt, 73, of Clearwater, Fla., and formerly of Southern Illinois, passed away at 1 p. m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at home. Dean was born in Marion, March 3, 1931, the son of Malcom and Alma (Padgett) Northcutt. Dean grew up in Zeigler, living there until entering the United States Navy in 1952 during the Korean conflict and was discharged in 1957. He later made his home in Wheeling and moved to Clearwater in 1971. When he retired, Dean was the owner of a laundry leasing service in Clearwater. While growing up in Zeigler he made many good friends, keeping in contact with them down through the years. He is survived by his mother, Alma Northcutt Fiscus of Clearwater; daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Gene Rimer of Clearwater; his companion, Lynnie (Kakouris) Richie of Clearwater; two granddaughters, Julie Halladay and Brandie Rimer both of Clearwater; one aunt, Marjorie Samay of Marion; and other family members and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Brent Northcutt; and one infant brother, Malcom Northcutt, Jr. Dean will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Services for Dean Northcutt will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Kramer of Zion United Church of Christ officiating.
