CHESTER -- Hilda A. Hartman, 85, of Chester, died at 3:20 p. m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Arrangements are incomplete at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester.

Eva Lee Knight

CREAL SPRINGS -- Eva Lee Knight,70, passed away at 4:52 a. m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. She was born in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Harry and Lola (Holland) Sinks. Eva was united in marriage to Neil Knight in Mount Vernon on April 8, 1951, and together they have shared the last 53 years. Eva's working career was as a CNA for many years, caring for the residents of Mattingly Care Center, now called Cardinal Health Care and Park Avenue Health Care Center, both in Herrin. She later went to work in food service and began working at Kay's Sugar Creek Restaurant in Creal Springs for many years until her health forced her to retire. She was a Christian believer and a Protestant. Eva also found enjoyment attending yard sales, antiquing, going to auctions and playing bingo. What brought her the greatest enjoyment of all was her family and the many times they all gathered together. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a person who always had the needs of others up-most on her mind. She is survived by her husband, Neil of Creal Springs; three sons, Duane Knight of Marion, Darrell Knight of Creal Springs, and Larry Knight of Herrin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Bush of Marion, Lola and Robert Wolaver of Marion, and Diane and Michael Simmons of Creal Springs; grandsons, Christopher and Dustin Knight, of Creal Springs, whom she raised as her own sons after the death of their father, Jerry; 11 other grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Harold Browder of St. Charles, Mo.; brother-in-law, Paul Schepp of Spring Valley; and sister-in-law, Barbara (Knight) Denham and her husband Herbert of Mount Vernon; other family members and many friends. She will be truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Preceding her in death were her parents; son, Jerry Knight, on May 27, 2001; granddaughter, Robin Knight in January of 1993, and sister, Mildred Schepp. Arrangements for Eva Lee Knight have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St. in Marion, IL. The visitation will be held between 5 and 8 p. m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at the funeral home. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, July 3rd, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Robert Schierbaum presiding. Interment will follow in Webb Cemetery near Tunnel Hill. Brett Shemwell

HERRIN -- Brett Samuel Shemwell, 29, of Herrin, died at 2:30 a. m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Herrin. Brett was born on Jan. 15, 1975, in Carbondale, to Sam and Mona (Goins) Shemwell of Herrin. He worked as a senior graphic design artist for EcoDigital Development Group. He also performed freelance graphic work from his own business, Intel Logic, from his home in Herrin. Brett was a warm, caring, free-spirited, fun-loving young man who enjoyed his family and his friends. He loved participating in (he still holds several records for basketball at South Side Junior High in Herrin) and watching (especially the Dallas Cowboys) sports. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his buddies. Brett was a talented artist and liked to draw. He drew inspiration from artists like Van Gogh and Dali. Brett most enjoyed his 'coffee breaks' during the day to play Frisbee with his beloved dog, Arti. Survivors include parents, Sam and Mona Shemwell of Herrin; sister, Stephanie Shemwell of Herrin; grandfather, Junior Shemwell of Herrin; grandmother, Marian Goins of Herrin; aunt and uncle, Debbie and Bruce 'Moose' Smith of Herrin; aunt and uncle, Loretta and Skip Hunter of Herrin; uncle and aunt, Steve and Elaina Goins of Herrin; cousins, Rob and Kellie Hunter of Carterville, Kandi and Brian Chapman of Carterville, McKenzie and Brynnen Smith of Herrin, Molly and Max Goins of Herrin, Jacob and Miriah Chapman of Carterville, and Nicholas Cole and Ian Hunter of Carterville; childhood friend, Robin Houghlan of Herrin; and numerous close friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Louise Collard; grandmother, Cleda Shemwell, and grandfather, Ferrell Goins. Services will be at 10 a. m. today at the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church in Herrin. The Rev. LaVon Bayler will officiate. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Music Ministry or the Brett Samuel Shemwell Memorial Art Scholarship. Kathy Gail Reed

Marion -- Kathy Gail Reed, 54, died at 5:30 p. m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at Willow Creek Nursing Home in Belleville. Kathy was born Sept. 11, 1949, to Arlie and Retha (Newton) Cagle in Williamson County. Kathy worked for People's Bank for 25 years as the assistant vice president. She attended Spillertown Baptist Church. Kathy was a former member of the Rotary Club, Lioness Club and BPW. Survivors include a son, Kyle Williams of Marion; parents, Arlie and Retha Cagle of Marion; aunt, Irene Reed of Carlye, Ind.; and a cousin who is like a sister, Scarlett Miller of Marion. She was preceded by her aunt, Thelma Miller; and uncles, Jesse Cagle and George Reed. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with Pastor John Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. CARBONDALE -- June Brown, 83, of Carbondale, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at 10:35 a. m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with the Revs. Sam Foskey and Myron Dillow officiating. Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. Friends may call from 11:30 a. m. until time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to University Baptist Church, 700 Oakland Street, Carbondale, IL 62901; Baptist Children Home of Carmi, 949 County Road 1300 N., Carmi, IL 62821; or VNA TIP Hospice, Silver Team, 508 South Park Ave., Herrin, IL 62948 and will be accepted by the funeral home. June was born at the home of her parents Orbe and Flossie (Bearden) Deaton in Marion. She married Bill Brown on June 8, 1941. He preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 2002. She is also preceded in death by her parents and her only sister, Dorothy Bradley. Survivors include one son, Dr. G. Michael Brown of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Mariah, Jared and Ethan Brown all of Carbondale; one brother-in-law, Marion Bradley of Carbondale; and one aunt, Chloe Dungey of Marion. June attended grade school and high school in Marion. She was elected queen her senior year. She attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was a graduate of Mrs. Hickey's in St. Louis. Later she was co-owner and manager of Southern Sports Center in West Frankfort. After moving to Carbondale in 1960 she retired to make a home for her husband and son. She was baptized in and was a member of First Baptist Church, Marion. After moving to West Frankfort she became a member of First Baptist Church of West Frankfort, and she has been a member of University Baptist Church of Carbondale since 1961. June was an avid sports fan and accompanied her husband, Bill, who was the assistant athletic director at SIUC, on many trips to recruit football and basketball players. She rarely missed a game in either sport at SIUC in more than 30 years. She would watch college and professional football for hours at a time on Saturdays and Sundays in the autumn. But her greatest love in sports was golf, a game she played very well. She had been a member of the Jackson County Country Club since 1960. She won the annual Women's Club Championship on 10 different occasions and was runner-up on five others. She also won many local and regional tournaments and placed in many others. June enjoyed playing bridge and gin-rummy with her friends; raising flowers; and traveling with her husband and life mate, Bill. But she seemed to have the most fun when she was playing with her grandchildren; she always remained young at heart. June had a wonderful life, and she was one of God's blessings to everyone who knew her well. She will be dearly missed.

Iola Bertha Lybarger

CUTLER -- Iola Bertha Lybarger, 95, died at 2:20 p. m. Monday, June 28, 2004, at the Skilled Care Unit of Pinckneyville Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville, with the Revs. Shaw Dement and Larry Revelle officiating. Burial will be in the Cottom Cemetery in Cutler. Visitation will be after 6 p. m. today and from 7:30 a. m. to the hour of services Thursday at the funeral home. Iola was born on Friday, February 19, 1909, in Campbell Hill, to George and Bertha Koepp Henson. She married Joseph Edgar Lybarger on Nov. 26, 1924, in Pinckneyville. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1931. She then married Roy Lybarger on Aug. 28, 1946, in Salem. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1970. She is survived by two daughters, Delores (George ) Quillman of Campbell Hill, and Nettie Lodge of Willisville; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Niemeyer of Granite City. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Wilma Lybarger; two brothers, John Henson and Edward Glass; and one sister, Neola Keller. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Memorial contributions can be made to the Tangen Cemetery.

Erma Lee (English) Lance

KARNAK -- Erma Lee (English) Lance, 76, of Karnak, formerly of Olmstead, died at 7:55 a. m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. Mrs. Lance was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Mounds, the daughter of the late Lee English and Edna (Haven) English. Mrs. Lance was a Methodist and a housewife and homemaker. Mrs. Lance was preceded in death by her husband, William Alfred Lance on Jan. 29, 1987; a brother, Floyd English and a granddaughter. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Willis and Patsy Lance, Fred and Nancy Lance, Terris and Tracy Lance, all of Olmstead; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Freddie Myrick of Karnak; two sisters, Juanita Schwieger of Manhattan and Evelyn Smith of Tamaroa; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Terry Kern officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Pulaski. FAIRFIELD -- William L. Grimes, died June 28, 2004, at Hillsboro Hospital. He was born in Carterville, April 25, 1926, the son of John and Mildred (Reichert) Grimes. He was an agent for Prudential and Western Southern Insurance Companies. Survivors include a son, Bradley Grimes of Hillsboro; a daughter, Deborah Grimes of Herrin; two sisters, Arminta Overbee of Fairfield and Rosemary Canuteson of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a. m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Fairfield. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to the start of services today at the funeral home.

Katherine Rossiter

CARBONDALE -- Katherine Kimmel Rossiter, 66, died at 2:14 a. m. Monday, June 28, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born June 14, 1938, in Du Quoin, to Bryan and Susan (Leponis) Kimmel. She formerly owned and operated the Uptown Motel in Carbondale. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and of Delta Zeta Sorority. She left behind her beloved son, James Kimmel Rossiter, and her beloved dog, Tribble. She will be missed by all who knew her. Services will be at 10 a. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Huffman-Harker Funeral Home, with Father Chris Piasta officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. today at the funeral home. Louise Howerton Lantrip

CAMBRIA -- Louise Howerton Lantrip, 81, of Cambria, died Saturday, June 26, 2004, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Ed Martin officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Diabetes. Foundation. She was born on April 19, 1923, in Crainville to Charles and Minnie (Crain) Vaughn. She married Thomas Daton Howerton on Sept. 28, 1942, in Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1977. She then married Marion Orval Lantrip on June 15, 1985, in Hafer. He preceded her in death May 21, 2004. Clara is survived by her sister, Elsie Carlson of Rockford; four daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Lorraine and Curtis Messer of Tamaroa, Donna Rowatt and Kenny Dawkins of Royalton, Ina and Norman Burgess of Herrin, and Wanda and Joe Malston of Carterville; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nine stepchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Daton Howerton and Orval Lantrip; two sisters, Marie McNeill and Rose Ferguson; and one brother, Clarence Vaughn. Clara worked for 18 years in the dietary department at Herrin Hospital, where she performed various tasks. She was a full-time minister since the age of 16 and attended the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Marion. She enjoyed writing gospel songs, poems, preaching the gospel, and singing at various nursing homes in the area.

Edward 'E. C. ' Russell

HERRIN -- Edward 'E. C. ' Russell, 85, died at 2:15 a. m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. E. C. was born July 10, 1918, at Harrisburg, to Edward Clyde and Mabel May (Rogers) Russell. He married Melba Blessing on May 2, 1942, in Centralia. He was retired, having owned and operated, along with his wife, Russell's Texico in Herrin since 1948. He was a Presbyterian. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army. He was a member of Herrin American Legion and VFW Posts. He also was a former member of the Herrin Elks. He enjoyed playing and coaching baseball, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed yard work and especially working at his son's yard. Survivors Include his wife, Melba Russell of Herrin; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Sherry Russell of Herrin; granddaughter, Shannie Russell of Chicago; grandson, Ryan Russell of Phoenix; two brothers, Charles Russell of Energy and Donald Russell of Springfield; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and John Belt of Kissimee, Fla., Drucilla and Harley Helms of Freeman Spur, and Audrey and Tom Hamilton of Naples, Fla.; sisters, Reba Brown of Delavin, Wis., and Dorthy Laurell of Bakesfield, Calif.; she is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Basil, Clifford and Jerry Russell; and two sisters, Mary and Beverly Russell. Services will be at 11 a. m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Whitfield officiating. military graveside rites will be conducted by the Herrin American Legion and VFW Posts. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Madonna Ross Choate

ANNA -- Madonna Ross Choate, 85, died at 5 a. m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Union County Hospital. She was born April 21, 1919, in St. Elmo, the daughter of Leslie H. and Ethel Elizabeth Byers Ross. She married Clyde Lee Choate May 10, 1947, in Carbondale. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 2001. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Elizabeth Ellen Wood of Carbondale and Madonna Kim and John L. Hughey of Anna; one brother, Clyde 'Cop' Ross of Bradenton, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Leon Cox of Carbondale; two grandsons, J. C. Hughey and Evan Ross Hughey; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Susie Bailey; six brothers, Cliff, Pete, Emmett, Arthur and two others who died in infancy; and a niece, Anna Miranti. Madonna worked in the defense plant in Wichita, Kan., during World War II. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna, with the Rev. Steve Wilkinson officiating. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. Wednesday at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna and after 10 a. m. to the time of service Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association of the Evangelical Presbyterian Chuch. Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Ann is in charge of arrangements.
