CENTRALIA -- Mitchell Blake Jourdan, of Russellville, Ala., formerly of Centralia, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Russellville. Private family services will be held Saturday, Aug. 21. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Friday in the Boggs Chapel of the Styninger-Pacey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to his family to help with medical expenses and will be received by the funeral home.

GALATIA -- George Dearing, 88, of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Galatia and the Marion area, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Howard Regional Health System in Kokomo. Services will be at 1 p. m. today in Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, with the Rev. David Schlag officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery in Galatia. Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. today in the funeral home.

Guy Mitchell

GALATIA -- Guy Mitchell, 57, of Galatia, died at 10:50 a. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004. Services will be at 2 p. m. Friday in Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, with Dr. James Baldwin and the Rev. Bernie Cowgill officiating. Burial will be in Tates Chapel Cemetery in Galatia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today in the funeral home.

Ruth Murphy

MARION -- Ruth Murphy, 77, of Marion, passed away on Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at home. Mrs. Murphy was born March 19, 1927, in Elgin, to George and Marie (Jahnke) Reuter. She married Alfred Warren Murphy on Dec. 31, 1954, in Chicago. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2004. Survivors include her daughters, Pam Davis of Hanover Park, Pat Bailey of Rockford; grandchildren, Sarah Bailey of Crystal Lake, Thomas Bailey and wife Stephanie Conaboy of Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren, Elle, Natalie and Christian Murphy Bailey of Pennsylvania; brothers, Eugene Reuter of Missouri, Leroy Reuter of Barrington, Walter Reuter of Illinois, Leonard Reuter of Colorado, Bill Reuter and Raymond Reuter both of Illinois; sisters, Irene Blaschke of Arizona, Mable Harmening of Arizona, and Helen Vallerio of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Emil Reuter and sister, Laura Anderson. Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker. In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated.

Patricia A. Dixon

JONESBORO -- Patricia A. Dixon, 69, passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale. She was born on May 19, 1935, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Cornelius Timothy and Elizabeth Mary (Kelly) O'Keefe. She married Paul D. Dixon on Jan. 28, 1955, in Lowell, Mass. Mrs. Dixon was a mother and a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Terry Campbell of Anna; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul C. and Martha Dixon of Tyngsboro, Mass.; two grandchildren, Tony and wife, Susan Vaccaro and David Vaccaro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Strafford Westgate Jr. of Rishton Park and Rita Ballos of Lowell, Mass.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Sharon O'Keefe of Salisbury, Mass., Michael and Donna O'Keefe of Lowell. Mass. She was preceded in death by husband; two brothers, Francis O. and John J. O'Keefe; two sisters, Lillina Gilberto and Theressa Koukias. Funeral Mass will conducted at 10 a. m. Friday, Aug. 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. today at Hileman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Cobden Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Helen Duncan

TAMAROA -- Helen Duncan, 84, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, in Bethesda, Md. Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Saturday in Tamoroa Cemetery, with the Rev. Raymond Baggott officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Searby Funeral Home in Tamoroa. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army in St. Louis, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

STEEVILLE -- Donna Jean Brenning, 59, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in St. John Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday in Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeville, with Dr. Alan W. Janneke officiating. Burial will be in the Paradise Cemetery in Steeville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Friday and 7:30 to 11 a. m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Sara Walker

HERRIN -- Sara 'Sally' (Dohanich) Walker, 55, of Elkhart, Ind., formerly of Herrin, died 2:25 p. m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the Elkhart General Hospital emergency room. Arrangements are incomplete at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart.

McLEANSBORO -- Dean Cullins, 60, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at home in Wauchula, Fla. Services will be at 10 a. m. Saturday in Blooming Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Lee David Gidcumb and Mark Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Blooming Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to Blooming Grove Baptist Church and will be accepted at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Benny Joe Murphy Jr.

FREEMAN SPUR -- Benny Joe Murphy Jr., 24, of Freeman Spur, formerly of Elgin, passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Alderwood Care Center in South Elgin from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Southern Illinois. He was born March 18, 1980, in Elgin, the son of Benny Joe Murphy Sr. and Julie Jarka. He had been a resident of Elgin for 16 years before moving to Freeman Spur. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish and hunt. Survivors include his four children, Benny Joe III, Amber, Peyton and Gerald; their mother, Danette Raudenbusch; his mother and step-father, Julie and David Richardson; his father and step-mother, Benny Joe and Caroline Murphy; two brothers, Cory and Jason Murphy; two step-brothers, Timmy and Jimmy Phillips; two step-sisters, RaeAnne and KaeLey Phillips; his maternal grandmother, Dolly Jarka of Elgin; his step-grandparents, Judy Richardson of Elgin and Roger and Ruth Thomas of Marion; his step-great-grandparents, James and Caroline Bailey of Marion and George and Betty Kawa of Elgin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, in Laird Funeral Home in Elgin. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p. m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family.

BENTON -- Mildred McClendon, 95, died at 3:02 a. m. Tuesday, July 24, 2004, in Severins Nursing Home in Benton. Memorial services will be at 2 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 22, in the First Baptist Church in Benton, with the Rev. Bob Askew officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Benton or to the Benton Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Leonia Bowlby

BENTON -- Leonia (Melvin) Bowlby, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the Parkway Manor in Marion. Services will be at 1 p. m. today in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends may call after 10 a. m. today at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Ruby Smith

HERRIN -- Ruby F. Smith, 93, died at 2 p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p. m. Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin, with the Rev. Michael Henson officiating. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery, near West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p. m. Friday at the church. Van Natta Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Hassie Pitts Lingle Dettenbach

ANNA -- Hassie Pitts Lingle Dettenbach, 91, of Anna, departed this world to be with her Heavenly Father at 11:10 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Anna City Care. She was born Dec. 5, 1912, to Lother and Flora (Lott) Pitts near Anna. Hassie completed her sojourn through the public schools of Union County, graduating from the Anna-Jonesboro High School in 1932. Hassie married Joe Lingle after graduating from high school. Mr. Lingle passed away in 1962. Hassie was employed at the International Shoe Factory until it was closed in 1963. Hassie secured employment with the Department of Mental Health through Elgin Medical Center in August 1963. There she progressed through classifications of Psychiatric Aides I, II and III within a few years. Her last few years before her retirement were spent as a supervisor in the Rehab Department for handicapped residents of Elgin Mental Health. While employed at Elgin Mental Health Center, she met Frank C. Dettenbach, also from Southern Illinois. They were united in marriage on Nov. 20, 1964, and made their home in Elgin for more than 25 years. In 1991, Hassie and her husband sold their home in Elgin and moved to Panama City, Fla., where Hassie enjoyed the warm winters along with fishing and shelling. Hassie is survived by her husband, Frank C. Dettenbach of 403 N. Green St., Anna; sisters Mary Hoyle of Anna and Ruth Forbes of Bristol; niece Loretta Schmidt of Yorkville; nephews Dale Pitts of Washington and Paul Pitts of Scottsdale, Ariz.; several grand-nieces and -nephews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Jane Dettenbach of East Alton; and niece and nephew Cona and Allan Nanney of Highland. Hassie was preceded in death by her parents, Lother and Flora Pitts; niece Jeannetta Hindman, whose husband Terry Hindman remains an integral part of this family; and brother Truman Pitts. Hassie will always be remembered as a kind and loving wife. She would go out of her way to assist anyone who needed her help. She was always available for any family member who was in distress or needed a shoulder to lean on. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Anna.

Loyce J. Livesay

WARE -- Loyce J. Livesay, 75, of Ware, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Grand Tower, the son of John and Helen (Hale) Livesay. He married Mary Lou Copeland on Jan. 20, 1954, in Yazoo City, Miss. Mr. Livesay was a member of Ware Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky., where he served during the Korean conflict. He was a radio operator during this time. He continued to be a ham radio operator, which was one of his many hobbies during the course of his life. He was a member of several local ham radio clubs, including SARA, MARA, SEMO radio club, and the ARRL. He was an avid bicycle rider and was featured in an article in the Southeast Missourian supplement 'tby, the best years. 'He was a member of Caroll P. Foster VFW Post No. 3455. For many years he split his time between farming and working as an engineer at Central Illinois Public Service Company in Grand Tower, where he retired after 35 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Sherry Wilson of Wolf Lake; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Lynda Livesay of Witt; one granddaughter, Nikki and husband Toby Stoker of Mattoon; two grandsons, Jacob and Ian Livesay of Witt; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Evelyn Livesay of Jonesboro, Edwin and Barbara Livesay of Wolf Lake, and Keith and Jean Livesay of Ware; one sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Ralph Stroehlein of Cobden; one uncle, Robert 'Bud' and wife Doris Livesay; two aunts, Claire Franklin and Lucille Huston; lifelong friends Waymon and Barbara Belcher; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Lyndsay Livesay. Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Kirby officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Caroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 Anna VFW. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Friday at Hileman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

CHESTER -- Douglas E. Kibby, 30, of Wood River, formerly of Chester, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Schroeder- McClure Funeral Home in Chester.

Paul Leon Lowery

HERRIN -- Paul Leon Lowery, 69, of Edgewater, Fla., passed away at 12:45 p. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Hospice Care Center in Port Orange, Fla., with his family by his side. Paul was born Aug. 20, 1934, in Oscar, Ky., to the late Paul E. and Lottie L. (Moore) Lowery. He married Phyllis Weiss on July 1, 1961, and she survives. Mr. Lowery worked 28 years as a heavy equipment manufacturer for Clark Equipment Company in Jackson, Mich., before moving to Florida in 1998. He was fan of Kentucky Wildcats basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards. He was a member of New Smyrna Beach First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis A. (Weiss) Lowery of Edgewater, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Jane Lowery of Phoenix; one grandchild, Eleanore Lowery of Phoenix; one brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Ann Lowery of Cement City, Mich.; and one brother, Randy Lowery of Kevil, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with Deacon Robert Stroud of Jacksonville, Ark., officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Counties in Florida or to the New Smyrna Beach First Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Alberta 'Bert' Daniels

MURPHYSBORO -- Alberta 'Bert' Daniels, 73, passed away at 4:30 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Mrs. Daniels had lingered in the nursing home for more than seven years. Services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in De Soto Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Daniels officiating. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Bert was born on Aug. 29, 1920, in Murphysboro, to Fred and Gertrude (Raines) Carlisle. Mrs. Daniels was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mount Carbon Church of God in Murphysboro and a member of the Murphysboro Senior Citizens. She married Claude J. 'Bud' Daniels on May 12, 1947, in Piggott, Ark., and he survives. Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Claude J. 'Skip' Daniels Jr. and Linda Daniels of Elkville; nine grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren; one brother, Bill Carlisle and one sister, Dorothy DeLuca, both of Murphysboro. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, one son, Don Carlisle, one sister and two brothers.

McLEANSBORO -- Marie Travis, 86, died at 7:29 p. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Hamilton Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in Gholson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tony Jenkins and youth pastor Benny Webb officiating. Burial will be in Clay City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home.

Marietta 'Mary' A. (Quathamer) Harms

MARISSA -- Marietta 'Mary' A. (Quathamer) Harms, 83, died Monday Aug. 16, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Thursday in Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in Marissa, with the Rev. Sara Thiessen officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Cemetery in Hecker. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. today and 9 to 10:30 a. m. Thursday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Marietta was born April 20, 1921, in Parsons, Kan., to Carl and Estella (Howald) Quathamer. She married Ralph J. Harms who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She was a former member of BZB and a member of the Senior Pals. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Judy Harms, Richard and Phylis Harms and Lee and Cathy Harms; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dotty and Ken Qualls and Donna and Monte Ashmore; one sister, Iona Howald; one sister-in-law, Sophia Quathamer; and a special friend, Harold Mueller, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Jerry Harms, two brothers, Carl and Orville Quathamer, one sister, Florance Zieder, and one grandson.
