COBDEN -- Roland J. 'Rollie' Westerhoff, 61, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Marion. He was born March 19, 1943, in West Dalton, Neb., a son of Ella E. (Siefer) Westerhoff Anderson of Carbondale and the late Elmer L. Westerhoff. Mr. Westerhoff was a retired sales representative in the industrial products industry and a Vietname War
Army veteran. He was a member of the Laguna Presbyterian Church in Laguna Beach, Calif., a member of the church choir and Handbell Choir and he was also a member and past president of the Lion's Club of Tustin, Calif. He is survived by his mother, Ella E. Anderson of Carbondale; a sister, Karen (Tom) Hippensteel of Carbondale; a niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1963. Services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, Old Illinois 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Evergreen Memorial Park in Kewanee, with Mrs. Lempke's grandchildren conducting the service. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park. COBDEN -- Hazel L. Batson, 81, died at 4:25 a. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born on March 7, 1923, in Anna, a daughter of Jasper and Maude (Nimmo) Young. On June 30, 1944, she was united in marriage to Robert Wesley Batson, and he survives. Mrs. Batson was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Robert Wesley Batson of Cobden; three daughters, Almeda Rotes of Granite City, Jeanette Kotosky of Anna and Linda Flavin of Carbondale; one son, Darrell Batson of Vienna; nine grandchildren, Letha Lesar, Ray Angle, Kathleen Richey, John Angle, Paul Kotosky, Angela Batson, Josephine Kotosky, Mendy Batson and Molly Lang; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Lesar, Nicholas Lesar and Preston Richey; two brothers, Bill Young and Clifford Young, both of Granite City; two sisters, Brenda of West Frankfort and Honey Lou of Golconda; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, Robert Wesley Batson Jr.; and nine brothers and sisters. Services will be at 2 p. m. today in Crain Funeral Home in Anna, with Pastor Joe Aldridge officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery

Survivors include three sisters, Celia Martin, Faye Feuquay and Joy McCormick, all of West Frankfort, and four brothers, Alfred and Ernest Warren, both of West Frankfort; Richard Warren of Anaheim, Calif.; and Alvin Warren of Torrington, Wyo. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Joe, Harley, James, Elmer and Howard Warren; and three sisters, Lillie Warren, Frances Dorris and Lou Bush.

Dr. N. G. 'Doc' Springer
CHESTER -- Dr. N. G. 'Doc' Springer, 80, retired local optometrist and long-time area resident, passed away quietly on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in his home in Chester in the loving presence of his wife and children after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Okawville, to the late Dr. Louis G. and Gertrude (Good) Springer. A graduate of Okawville high school, he served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, and later attended St. Louis University and Chicago School of Optometry, receiving O. D. and D. O. S. degrees. He married Eva Marie Marcham of Carlyle on Aug. 28, 1945. Dr. and Mrs. Springer moved to Chester in 1950 where 'Doc' established his optometric practice. He retired from private practice in 1993 after 43 years of service to the community and surrounding areas. Throughout the years, Dr. Springer was an active member in numerous civic, church and community organizations, including the Lutheran Laymen League, the Lutheran Board of Education, the American Optometric Association, American Legion Post No. 487 of Chester, the Sportsman Club, the Chester Chamber of Commerce and the Chester Lions Club. Doc was elected to four consecutive terms, from 1966 to 1974, to the Illinois State Legislature as state representative for the 57th District. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. Survivors include his wife, Eva Springer of Chester; three children, Susan M. Giles of Frisco, Texas, Steven C. and wife Jody Springer of Chester, and Scott M. Springer of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas; one sister, Ruth McDowall of Stuart, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a loving stepmother, Esther (Gillen) Springer; one brother, Dr. Allen L. Springer, D. D. S.; and one granddaughter, Sara Springer. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, with the Rev. Mark Willig officiating. Interment will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, with military graveside services under the direction of American Legion Post No. 487. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. today and from 7:30 to 9:30 a. m. Thursday at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester and from 10 to 11 a. m. Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church. CARBONDALE -- Stephen Eugene Stewart, 57, died at 5:10 p. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Carbondale. Services will be 8 p. m. Thursday in Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Thursday in the funeral home. Mr. Stewart was born Aug. 10, 1947, in Coffeyville, Kan., the son of Calvin and Hazel (Cornett) Stewart. He married Lynne Trantina on Jan. 2, 1971, in Benson, and she survives. He worked at Building services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He was an Air Force veteran. He was a member in Ducks Unlimited in Carbondale and BASS National. Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Brian Bush of Carbondale; son, Adam Stewart of Carbondale; father, Calvin Stewart; brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Kathy Stewart; and two granddaughters, Abby and Hannah, all of Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother.

COBDEN -- Col. Amos Kermit White, 74, died at 3:40 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday in Harre Funeral Home in Dahlgren, with the Rev. Kenneth Mixen officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Nepomucene Cemetery
in Dahlgren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. today in the funeral home. Mr. White was born April 24, 1930, in Jefferson County, the son of George and Elizabeth (Browder) White. He married Ruth E. Allen on Nov. 24, 1949, in Dahlgren. She died April 17, 1997. He then married Bonnie Lou Duty on Oct. 18, 1998, in Cobden, and she survives. He retired from the IGA grocery store in Mount Vernon after 30 years of service. He was also auctioneer in the Southern Illinois area. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church and a former member of St. John Nepomucene Church. Other survivors include seven children, Charles White of Dahlgren, Joyce and husband, Clyde Lee Cross of Wayne City, Pam and husband, Larry Cox of Mount Vernon, Mark and wife, Trena White of McLeansboro, Cathy and husband, Zane Wilkerson of Peyton Colo., Stephen White of Anderson, Ind., and Paula Terry of Dale; 14 grandchildren, Christopher White, Gregory White, Elizabeth Rieskamp, Michelle Byrom, Janet Harrison, Jeffery Cox, Jason Cox, Joshua White, Larry White, Joseph Wilkerson, Rebecca Wilkerson, Sarah White, Ashley Terry and Brian Terry; three great-grandchildren, Donna White, Samuel Byrom and Ty Adam White; three sisters-in-law, Mary White of Belle Rive, Rietta Spalding of Kimerling City, Mo., and Gertude White of Millburn N. J.; two stepdaughters, Aleta and husband, Scott Uhls of Dahlgren and Valery and husband, Kevin Burns of Anna; four step-grandchildren, Avery, Jason, Dezmen and Aaron; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Ruth White, four brothers, Arthur, George, Howard and Andy, and four sisters, Opal, Mildred, Vivian and Edna.
Edna May Frailey
MAKANDA -- Edna May Frailey, 93, died Sunday Aug. 15, 2004, in the Oak Grove Rehabilitation and Care Center in Carbondale. She was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Brownstown, a daughter of the late Clyde and Anna (Koehler) Willms. Mrs. Frailey was a retired homemaker and a member of the former Grace Chapel Free Methodist Church near Brownstown. She is survived by three sons, Jim (Dorothy) Frailey of Makanda, Max Frailey of Brownstown and David Frailey of Gardner, Kan.; a daughter Janet (Noble) McGee of Waleska, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-great-grandson, Nathan Green. Services will be at 11 a. m. today in Forbis Cemetery

Caroline Coloni
HERRIN -- Caroline L. Coloni, 89, of Herrin, died at 8:15 p. m., Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at home. Caroline was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Herrin to the late Anthony and Margarite (Marine) Coloni. She retired from Bracy Insurance agency in 1976 where she was employed as a secretary. Miss Coloni was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin until her health prevented her. Survivors include one niece, Norma Molla of Fairborn, Ohio; one nephew, James and wife Jackie Monticelli of O'Fallon, Mo.; and several great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Geatana Monticelli, Rose Coloni and Pauline DeFrank; one nephew, Paul Raymon Molla Sr.; one niece, Mary and husband Ernest Schennek; and two cousins, Charles and Celeste Eovaldi. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at San Carlo Cemetery

Helen Lorene Brown
VIENNA -- Helen Lorene Brown, 93, passed away at 1:30 a. m. Monday Aug. 16, 2004, in Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. Helen was born Dec. 13, 1910, in the Mount Pleasant Community of Union County. She was the daughter of Henry and Dora (Edwards) Keller. Helen was united in marriage to Fred W. Brown on May 27, 1933. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1965. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Dale Skelton of Vienna and Helen J. 'Jeanie' and James 'Jim' Bundren of Eddyville, Ky.; two grandchildren, James David 'Jamie' and Ashley Bundren of Eddyville, John Tyler 'J.T.' Bundren of Cannes, France; two great-grandchildren, Carver Banks Bundren and James Keaton Bundren both of Eddyville; and numerous cousins. Helen was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a former secretary for the WMU (Women's Missionary Union). Helen enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and loved to fish, until her health prevented her form doing so. Services will be at 10 a. m. today in the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna, with the Rev. Steve Lindsay officiating. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery

DU QUOIN -- Charles Ray Lunnemann, 59, died at 12:29 p. m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Charles was born in Pinckneyville on Oct. 28, 1944, a son of Albert W. and Maxine (Rennison) Lunnemann. Charles was a retired miner at Consolidated Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA, the Moose No. 930 in Pinckneyville, the Elks No. 1234 in Benton and the Eagles in Du Quoin. Survivors include his mother; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Christine Lunnemann of Springfield, Mo., Rick and Becky Lunnemann of Clarksville, Tenn., and Jeff and Annette of the Knoxville Tenn. area; one daughter and son-in-law, Daine and Nick Miller of Branson, Mo.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd L. and Dorothy Lunnemann and Danny W. Lunnemann, both of Pinckneyville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat A. and Charles Huth of Ava, Linda S. and James Lueker, Charlene F. and Gerald Butcher, Peggy D. and Thomas Fowler, of all of Pinckneyville; five grandchildren, Chase, Hannah, Haley and Michael Lunnemann and Nicole Miller; and several nieces and nephews. Leonia (Melvin) Bowlby
BENTON -- Leonia (Melvin) Bowlby, 84, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the Parkway Manor in Marion. She was born Aug. 11, 1920, in West Frankfort, to Ray Melvin and Ava (Smith) Melvin. She was united in marriage to Maurice J. Bowlby on July 8, 1948, in Waukegan. To this union a daughter, Brenda, was born. Leonia is survived by one sister, Rosetta Potts of Astoria, Ill.; one brother and sister-in-law, Norman D. and Pat Melvin of Benton; two sisters-in-law, Reva Melvin of Marion and Jean Melvin of Worth; 17 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maurice; her daughter, Brenda; five brothers, Smith, Don, Bill, Rex Lavern and Guy Leon; one sister, Betty Bruce; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Potts and James Bruce; and two sisters-in-law, Connie Melvin and Emily Melvin. Leonia was very proud of her career as a registered nurse, at which she worked for 33 years, primarily in the Waukegan area. She was a graduate of Frankfort Community High School. Leonia was a loving wife, sister, special aunt and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Services will be at 1 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery

MURPHYSBORO -- Wilbert Wayne Wendling, age 68, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:21 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in St. Joseph Hospital, Murphysboro. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Mayes officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. today and until the hour of services Thursday in the funeral home. Wayne was born on Aug. 26, 1935, in Murphysboro, to Wilbert F. Wendling and Arlene (Bea) Wendling. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and a charter member of the Elks. Wayne was an avid fisherman and hunter. He owned the Chalet for 48 years. He was married to Sandy Wendling Swalls of Benton, and they had four children, Kelly D. Mandrell and her husband, Doug Mandrell of Benton, Scott A. Wendling and his wife, Dana Wendling of Hershey, Pa., Tracy L. Pritchett and her husband, Butch Pritchett of Murphysboro, and he was preceded in death by one son, Mark W. Wendling; five grandchildren, Jason W. Cross and his fiancee, Heather of Benton, Mark W. Wendling of Carbondale, Ryan R. Pritchett of Murphysboro, Kara Wendling and Carson Wendling of Hershey; one great-grandson, Dalton W. Cross of Sesser; one special cousin and friend, Bob Brantley. He was preceded in death by his parents. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
