GRAYSLAKE -- Madeline J. 'Lynne' Sullins, 59, died at 2:55 p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at home. Services were held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in the Gurnee Funeral Home. Services will be conducted locally at 11:30 a. m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with Dr. James W. Cecil officiating. Interment will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:30 a. m. Monday at Bailey Funeral Home. Lynne worked side-by-side with her husband, Chuck, in operating Jiffy Cleaners in North Chicago for many years prior to retirement. She was a very artistic person and a gifted seamstress. Lynne had a love for making beautiful things. Lynne was born Jan. 21, 1945 in Chicago. She was united in marriage to Charles H. Sullins, and he survives. Other survivors include her mother, Mary Schreckeis and husband John of San Diego; one daughter, Deborah A. Oborny; and two grandchildren, Alexandria R. and Jacob J. Oborny. Lynne was preceded in death by her father, Matthew Kodis, and one daughter, Sandra M. Sullins. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 805 West DeYoung Street, Marion, IL 62959. DE SOTO -- Leslie Norman Fred Sr., 68, of De Soto, passed away at 7:07 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, in St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Services and Masonic Rites will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in De Soto Cemetery. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Pettett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Norman was born on Dec. 6, 1935, in De Soto, to Orvle and Elsie (Taylor) Fred. He was the owner of Norman Fred Trucking and Tri-County Lawn and Tractor in Murphysboro since 1967. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in De Soto. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Fred served in the U. S.
Army from 1956 to 1958. He married Laveta Loyd on July 2, 1955, in Hernando, Miss., and she survives. Other survivors include two children and their spouses, Leslie Norman 'Bud' Jr. and Lori Fred and Kathy and Ralph Hargraves, all of De Soto; seven grandchildren, Jason Leslie Fred and his wife Shelly, Travis Weldon Fred and his wife Casey, Nicole Lynette Heiple, Lisa Marie Shelton and her husband Chris, Cassandra Hargraves, Kyle D. Hargraves, and Ashley Lydell Fred; three great-grandchildren, Cody Ray Fred, Spencer M. W. Fred and Lydia G. L. Fred; his mother-in-law, Opal Higginbotham of DeSoto; one brother-in-law and his wife, Charles McCarthy and Terri McCarthy of De Soto; and two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Fayetta and Jack Chancey of De Soto and Mary and Monte Davis of Zeigler. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and twin granddaughters. MARION -- Lloyd A. Schafale, 80, of Marion, passed away 9:20 p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 11th, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Belleville. Lloyd, the son of Oscar and Marie (Mysch) Schafale was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Marion. Lloyd was a lifelong member of Zion United Church of Christ in Marion. He answered the call of his country and served as a Tec/5 in the United States
Army during World War II in Europe. Lloyd worked in the financial field in the sale of stocks and insurance for many years before his retirement. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Dick Trask of La Porte, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Carole Schafale of Pheonix and the Rev. Herbert and Benaleen 'Bennie' Schafale of Belleville; several nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris Sparks on May 11, 2002. Arrangements for Lloyd A. Schafale have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral of Marion. The time of the visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 p. m. MARION -- Thomas Dean Mitchell, 61, of 200 Easter St. in Marion, formerly of Mulkeytown, died at 5:03 p. m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Tom was born March 6, 1943, in Franklin County to Jessie and Sybal Eunice (Swain) Mitchell. He is survived by a dear friend, Sue Johnson of Herrin; a brother, John Mitchell of Mulkeytown; an aunt, Mary Ellen Gilpin of Christopher; an uncle, Walter Mitchell of West Frankfort; and several cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Tom served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965 and past commander of the Royalton VFW. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in Carbondale as a coal miner and last worked as a custodian at the Lamar High-Rise in Herrin. Services for Mr. Mitchell will be held at 10 a. m. today at the Harrison Cemetery

Marjorie Lee Earll
CARBONDALE -- Marjorie Lee Earll, 74, of Carbondale, passed away at 8:55 a. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Marjorie was born March 22, 1930, in Belleville, to Harry Lee and Addie Mae (Penninger) Johnson. She married Nick Earll on Nov. 22, 1961, in Carbondale. Survivors include her husband, Nick Earll of Carbondale; her cousins, Buddy and Beverly Rogers of Makanda, Norma Jean Young of West Frankfort, Lena Carrier of Raleigh, and Claire Behr of Clinton, Iowa; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Barbara Earll of Makanda; her special friends, Cheryl Francis of Cobden, Louise Jeffords of Carbondale and Don Doty of Carbondale; and many other devoted and loving friends, including 'The Gang': Lisa Colby and Loren Cocking, Aldona and Evert Johnson, and Susan and Perry Patterson, all of Carbondale. Her love of people embraced many. It was returned a thousand fold. Marjorie earned a bachelor of fine arts, a master of fine arts and two masters of science (one in rehabilitation counseling) degrees, all of them from SIUC. She worked many years for the Illinois Division of Vocational Rehabilitation at SIUC and the Choate Mental Health Center in Anna. She retired from Choate in 1991. She was a proud member of the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship and the Stage Company in Carbondale. She was a member of the Fellowship Humanist and Meditation groups. Her world expanded with this Fellowship. She blessed it many times. She was a painter and had several one-woman shows near Monterey Bay in California, as well as exhibitions of jewelry. She had a beautiful, always young and many-hued soul, wrote haiku verses, and loved poetry and art. She arrayed herself in beautiful clothes and saw the best in everyone, regardless of color. Family and friends are invited to assemble for a graveside service at 3 p. m. today at the Masonic and Oddfellow's Cemetery, located on the south side of Benton just off Illinois 37. Ken Starbuck will officiate. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in the near future at the Unitarian Fellowship in Carbondale. The date and time will be announced soon in The Southern Illinoisan. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the Unitarian Fellowship, 105 North Parrish Lane, Carbondale, IL 62901, or to The Stage Company, P. O. Betty Irene (Mooncotch) Hickey
ZEIGLER -- Betty Irene (Mooncotch) Hickey, 74, of Zeigler, died at 2:58 p. m. , Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Betty was born July 3, 1930, in Zeigler, to Thomas and Mary (Pasulka) Mooncotch. She married Jack Laster on Dec. 5, 1950, in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death June 16, 1981. She married George Hickey on July 10, 1976, in Zeigler. He preceded her in death May 10, 1996. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Rick Clark of Zeigler; one step-daughter and her husband, Maudie and Bill Bell of Zeigler; two granddaughters, Beth and husband Mike Parrilli of Henderson, Nev. , and Breanna and husband Drew Hamilton of Hamel; two grandsons, Bill and wife Elizabeth Bell of Champaign and Michael Bell of New York City; two great-nieces whom she raised, Gay Young and Denise Williams; one great-granddaughter, Mia Grace Parrilli; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Linda Mooncotch of Romeoville and John and Judy Mooncotch of Burr Ridge; one sister, Bernice Wallace of Bollingbrook; eight nieces; six nephews; eight great-nieces; eight great-nephews; 11 great-great-nephews; and 15 great-great-nieces. Her parents and an infant brother preceded her in death. Betty was a member of the Zeigler First Baptist Church and Eastern Star. She was an honorary member of the Zeigler Volunteer Fire Department. A memorial service for Mrs. Hickey will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in the First Baptist Church in Zeigler. Visiting hours will begin at 12 p. m. Saturday prior to the services. Eva Jean Owen McCollum
MARION -- Eva Jean Owen McCollum, 91, of Marion, passed away at 7:15 p. m. on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Parkway Manor of Marion. Eva Jean was born on July 25, 1913, in Marion, the daughter of Herman C. and Nellie I. (Davis) Humphrey. She was united in marriage twice during her lifetime, the first being to Raymond C. Owen on July 14, 1935, in Marion. Together they shared nearly 56 years until his death came on Jan. 26, 1991. She later married Edgar L. McCollum on Feb. 15, 1994, in Banner, Mo. Eva Jean's working career was in education. She taught school for 231/2 years in Williamson County, with all but two years of her teaching being at Lincoln School of Marion as a fourth grade teacher. After her retirement, Eva Jean volunteered much of her time helping with the Marion Senior Citizen's Center. Her church membership was with New Horizons Baptist Church of Marion. In her passing she leaves behind three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis Jean and Gerald Gray of Fenton, Mo., LaDonna Rae and Richard Alexander of Lincoln, and Linda Lee and John Wilson of Evansville, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister and brother-in-law, Lenora and Walter Fozard of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Raymond C. Owen. Arrangements for Eva Jean Owen McCollum have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral of Marion, IL. Clifford Morris Bowlin
WEST FRANKFORT -- Clifford Morris Bowlin, 88, of West Frankfort, departed this life on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort. Mr. Bowlin was born July 26, 1916, in Perry County, the son of William and Emma (Pheiffer) Bowlin. He married Lillian Manion on Nov. 26, 1946, in Murphysboro. She died Sept. 29, 2000. He served his country in the United States Navy as a Sea Bee during World War II, earning five bronze stars in the Asiatic Theater. Mr. Bowlin was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Frankfort. He was a retired coal miner, last working at Freeman Coal Mine No. 6. , and a member of the UMWA. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jack Essick of San Jose, Calif., and Noble and Janice Essick of West Frankfort; two daughters and one son-in-law, Emma Lou Shelton of West Frankfort and Betty and Bob Olson of Crytsol, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; one brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Sandy Bowlin of Valier; one son-in-law, Rex Rincker of Kansas City, Mo.; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Bowlin of Paris, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Carol; one brother; and two sisters. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Varis-Stone Funeral Home, with Rev. Bill Fox officiating. Interment will be in Denning Cemetery. Gail was born on Oct. 8, 1939, in McClure, to Russell and Mable Rebecca (Gray) Collins. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jeannie King of Bridgeport, Texas; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Shirley Collins of Goreville, Floyd and Cathy Collins of Indio, Calif. , and Harry and Wilma Collins of Carterville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Delmar Hammons of Zeigler and Janet and Tom Phillips of De Soto; six grandchildren, Mark Allen King of Herrin, James Russell Stout of West Frankfort, and Wanda Mills, Sharon Mills, Trent Mills and Teela Mills all of Bridgeport, Texas; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Hubert Russell Collins; and one grandson, Mark King. Gail worked at Smoler Brothers in Herrin for many years and had worked at General Dynamics for the last 10 years. She enjoyed sewing, dancing, fixing people's hair, going out to eat, but most of all spending time with her family. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
