BENTON -- Oma Lee Hobbs, 88, of Benton, a former resident of Christopher and Thompsonville, died at 9:55 p. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Severin Intermediate Care Home. Services will be held at 3 p. m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Denny Steed officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Benton. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p. m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hobbs was born Aug. 10, 1916, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Cornelius and Ida Mae (Johnson) Plasters. She married Russell R. Hobbs on Aug. 25, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2003. She taught grade school in Thompsonville prior to her retirement and was a member of the Franklin County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Thompsonville. Mrs. Hobbs is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Stephanie Hobbs of Christopher, and two grandchildren, Jason and wife Tiffanie Hobbs of Christopher and Kyle Hobbs of Christopher. Mrs. Hobbs was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Elton Plasters; and two sisters, Ruth Dillon and Veta Frazier. He married the former Verna Clouse, and she preceded him in death on April 27, 1987. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Hamilton County Coon Club. Mr. Miles is survived by nine children, Irvin and wife Kay Miles of Christopher, Eva Rexroad of Okeechobee, Fla. , Carol and husband Bob Patterson of Tuscola, Barbara and husband Frank Rich of Benton, Betty and husband Noel Phillips of Macedonia, Dean Miles of Benton, Allen and wife Betty Miles of Benton, Beverly and husband Jim Eldridge of Benton, and Nancy and husband Tom Sieveking of Marion; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nieces; and one nephew. STEELEVILLE -- Eugene A. Millsap, 82, of Steeleville, formerly of Mount Carroll, died at 7:08 p. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Mr. Millsap's wishes were to be cremated. The funeral will be conducted under the auspices of Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville. Mr. Millsap was a retired manager from Farm Bureau of Carroll County. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Mount Carroll. He was active in the Lion's Club for many years and was a 50-year member of Cyrus Lodge No. 188 A. F. and A. M. in Mount Carroll. He was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Borton, to Ray E. and Effie I. Hopkins Millsap. He married Mary Paulson on June 27, 1942. She passed away May 9, 1994. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Mary Lou Millsap of Steeleville and David and Julie Millsap of Mount Carroll; three grandsons, Brian, Tyler and Craig; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Millsap of Charleston; and one sister, Irma Stevenson of Matton. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Michelle Eggers; and one grandson, Michael Millsap. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.

Mary Elizabeth Georgeff
DE SOTO -- Mary Elizabeth 'Lizabeth' Georgeff, 64, went to be with her Heavenly Father at 1:30 a. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with her family, close friends and pastor by her side. She was born Jan. 4, 1940, to Mildred and Randall Sutton of Grand Tower. She graduate Shawnee High School in 1958. She married her high school sweetheart, Larry D. Georgeff, on July 27, 1958, and they recently celebrated 46 years of marriage together this past July. Lizabeth and Larry had a home in De Soto and raised their daughters, Donna and Teri, there. They owned and operated Larry's Gulf Service Station in Carbondale from 1969 to 1977. They founded Larry's Towing in 1972. Lizabeth and Larry attended Murdale Baptist Church. Lizabeth loved to spend time with her friends and family, especially her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She loved to travel. Her favorite place was the Smokey Mountains. She was an extraordinary woman, very kind and caring and loved by all who knew and spent time with her. Her wisdom, attitude and cheerful spirit will be missed by all. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Randall Sutton; her mother- and father-in-law, Violet Luthy and Pete Georgeff; and two infant children, Danny Lynn and Kathy Lynn. A special uncle, Gilbert South, also preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Larry Georgeff, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dan Throgmorton of Makanda and Teri and Shawn Priddy of De Soto; one sister and brother-in-law, Deborah Kay and Ty K. Elimon; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Bob and Judy Georgeff of Murphysboro, and Bart and Roenann Grafton and Donald Grafton, all of Kincaid; five grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Daniel Throgmorton, Dustin and wife Brandi Throgmorton, and Bryce and Morgan Priddy; and one great-grandson, Jacob Throgmorton. She is also survived by two special nieces, Stacie Houston and Kelley Cady; special close friends, Bob and Irene Priddy; her wonderful caregivers, Cherry Smith and Dawn Patton; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and loving friends. Jannetta 'Jewell' South
MARION -- Jannetta 'Jewell' South, 91, died at 3:40 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, with her family by her side, and God received the blessing when He called her home. On Aug. 5, 1913, in Marion, Henry and Clara (Groves) Sutton were blessed with a baby girl. She married Theodore 'John' McKinley South on Nov. 16, 1934, in Marion. Six children were born from this union. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1980. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Annette and Everett Jennings of Herrin and Kathy and David Campbell of Marion; one son and companion, Gary Eugene South and Connie Russell of Dix; one daughter-in-law, Gladys South of Virginia; 12 grandchildren, Ramona and David Doering, Danny and Laura Jennings, Lori Crab, and Daphny Blessing, all of Herrin, Cindy Russell of Carterville, Dale and Celia South of Virginia, Mary and Marty Wren and Kathryn Campbell, all of Peru, Julie and Tom Stevenson of Lacon, Rebecca and Jerry Dougherty of Bureau, and David Campbell and Melissa Campbell, both of Marion; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and special extended family members, Betty and David Beyers of Mauseyville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Lawrence Ray South; two daughters, Alta Kay and Ida Marie South; one step-son, James South; one granddaughter, Kimberly Jennings; seven sisters, Verna Clark, Pearl Clendenin, Margaret Michael, Susanna Threlkeld, Edna Durham, Bessie Purdue and Ida Spiller; and two brothers, Harry and Miles Sutton. HERRIN -- Betty Lou Laffoon, 61, went to be with the Lord at 5:30 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Betty was born on Dec. 3, 1942, in Herrin. She was one of God's special 'angels. ' She helped many people in her life, greeting each one with a smile. She was employed at United Technology in Herrin until her early retirement. Betty's heart was for the elderly, the needy and her mission work. She enjoyed animals, yard sales, cooking and shopping. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Herrin. Betty had many friends. Although she suffered a long battle with her illness, she always kept a positive attitude and her faith in the Lord. She is survived by her loving husband, Phillip Leroy Laffoon of Herrin; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Paul Ruzich of Johnston City; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Darlene Robinson of Mulkeytown; sister and brother-in-law Lanny and Sandy Atwood of Herrin; brother Terry Robinson of Herrin; many nieces and nephews, Steve, Rhonda, Zack and Tyler Layne of Johnston City, Paul W. Ruzich of Johnston City, David, La Shanda, Brittany, Jonathan and Micala Utley of Christopher, and Mark, Ginger and Jacob Hill of Franklin, Tenn.; and many cousins, all of whom were blessed by having Betty in their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Edith Robinson of Herrin; mother and father-in-law Leroy and Mae Laffoon of Herrin; many aunts and uncles; and one special nephew, Greg Robinson of Plumfield. ANNA -- Ralph D. Isom Sr. , 70, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Anna, died at 6:35 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Dec. 29, 1933, in Ullin, the son of Meredith and Cleta Gillete Isom. He received his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and his master's degree from Southeast Missouri State University. He was an ordained Baptist minister. He is survived by the mother of his children, Carlene Isom of Gordonville, Mo.; six children, Cathy and husband David Collier of Denver, Colo. , Ralph Jr. and wife Linda Isom of Anna, John Isom of Belknap, Mary and husband Brian McClanahan of Jackson, Mo. , Tim and wife Julie Isom of Cape Girardeau, and Renea and husband Roger Ruppenthal of Scott City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; four brothers, Clyde and Tunney Isom of Anna, Jim Isom of Arizona, and Kenneth Isom of Texas; and three sisters, Sue Murphy of Ullin, Maxine Johnson of Anna and Evelyn Long of Wisconsin. Fred Norman Cagle
MARION -- Fred Norman Cagle, 66, of Peoria, formerly of Marion, passed away at 7:33 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, in the Lutheran Home in Peoria. He was born Feb. 11, 1938, in Marion, the son of James T. and Marguerite L. (Norman) Cagle. Fred answered the call of this nation by serving in the United States
Army. He married Judith A. Maynard on June 21, 1959, in Marion. Together they have shared the last 45 years. His working career was as a field engineer for Caterpillar, Inc. , at several of the Peoria locations. His church membership was with the Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria. During his lifetime, Fred volunteered for many organizations, including the American Red Cross, Kickapoo Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Peoria Humane Society Dog Therapy Program. He was appointed by Mayor Richard Carver, to the Peoria City Planning Commission for a five-year term, serving two years as chairman. During his senior year at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he studied under R. Buckminster Fuller. In his passing he leaves behind his wife, Judy, of Peoria; one daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Matthew Daugherty of Washington, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Renee Cagle of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Harriet Cagle of Marion; and one aunt, Mary Overbey of Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Visitation in Marion will be held from noon to 2 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion. Richard 'Ping' Brown
CHESTER -- Richard M. 'Ping' Brown, 86, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at home. Ping was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chester. He was a gunner's mate instructor in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Methodist Men's Club in Chester, a life member of American Legion Alva Courier Post 487, an avid bowler -- he belonged to the American Bowlers Association, a loyal Cardinal baseball fan, and a partner in Atchison and Brown Amoco Service Station for 25 years. He was born April 17, 1918, in Steeleville, the son of Richard Lee and Eva (Morrison) Brown. He married Kathryn Atchison on Sept. 23, 1939, in Jackson, Mo. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1991. He is the beloved father of Richard A. Brown and his wife Barb of Chester and Nancy Batteau and her husband Ted of De Soto. He is the proud grandfather of Brett Batteau, Aaron Batteau, Jay Brown, Matthew Brown and Nate Brown; brother to the Rev. Vernon Brown and his wife Doris of Granite City; and uncle to many nieces and nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He was also a member of UMWA. He was a member of Old Brushy Primitive Baptist Church in Harco. He was also a 50-year member of Carrier Mills Masonic Lodge. He was born Aug. 21, 1908, in Saline County, to John M. and Linnie (Bond) Braden. He married Orpha Newman on Feb. 13, 1929, in Mount Vernon. She preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1998. Survivors include five nieces, Virginia Blackburn of Galatia, Shirley Teal of Galatia, Wanda Deen of McLeansboro, Mildred Hoffard of Johnston City, and Louise Ford of Newburn Side, and his caregivers, Roger and Darlene Roper and Gary Schwartz and Diane Stricklin. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sons, Robert Newman Braden and Larry Gene Braden; four brothers, Earl, Howard, Bertram and Leland Braden; and several nephews.

She enjoyed sewing, dancing, fixing people's hair, going out to eat, but most of all spending time with her family.

MACEDONIA -- Lewis I. Miles, 86, died at 2:50 p. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a. m. Monday in the Hobbs and Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery, Ewing. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home.
