William Ferrell Pender

MARION -- William Ferrell Pender was born April 19, 1936, in Dongola, to Mamie and Jack Pender. He died at the age of 68 years, 4 months, 22 days, on Sept. 10, 2004, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Ferrell spent 12 years with Pepsi- Cola before being employed at Southern Illinois University, where he has been in ground maintenance for the past 25 years. He was safety inspector of the micro sprint racing organization of the National Modified Midget Association of Region 2, which consists of Illinois and Indiana. He was elected as the new chairman of Region 2 for the 2005 season. He served in the Navy and was discharged in 1962. He married Sandy Pender of Marion on July 3, 1959, in Dongola, she survives. Other survivors include four sons, Danny Wayne and Debbie and their children, Anna Marie, Becky and John Daniel of Johnson City, Billy and Angie, and their children, Robby and Ashley, Jeremy, and Kyle and one great-granddaughter, Jaelynn of Centralia, Kevin and Mikki of Herrin, Rick, and Sherry and their children Misty Mae and Timmy of Marion; brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Launda Pender of Green Valley, Ariz.; nephew and niece, Mike and Margret Pender and children, Michelle and Rod Mays and children, Holly Renee and Cody; Melinda Pender-King and children Riley, Rusty, and Roger of Dix, Mamie Jean and children, Bobby Joe, Kyle and Jackson of Centrally; Mike and Nat of Belleville; Mike and Kelly and son, Gabe; brother-in-law, Gene Clardy and wife Dorothea of West Frankfort, and children Cindy and Mike Davis and sons, Justin and Nick; Becky and Mark Jelley and children Gabe and Abbey; brother-in-law, Junior Clardy and wife Shirley of Anna and sons, John, Mike, David, James and Floyd Stephen and their families; brother-in-law, Jim Clardy and wife Eleanor, and daughters, Gloria and Tod Blandford, Treasea and Tony Goins, Megan, Lauen and Alexis; Sonya and Rich Fabec and children, Morgan and Garrett; brother-in-law, Wayne and Jean and children, Jeremy and wife, Heather; Sheliah and Jim Whittington and Benjamin; and Myranda Rogers. Susie M. Denkins

MARION -- Susie M. Denkins, 80, died at 3:40 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Susie was born on Aug. 26, 1924, in Marion to George and Gertrude (Marthel) Williams. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethal AME Church in Marion. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a. m. Tuesday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.

MURPHYSBORO -- Walter F. Seth, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. Arrangements are incomplete at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, Murphysboro.

Elizabeth (Betty) Carol Pavey

MURPHYSBORO -- Elizabeth (Betty) Carol Pavey, 71, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:05 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, with Father Gary Gummer-sheimer officiating. Burial will be at St. Andrew Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. today and Monday until 9:45 a. m. at Pettett Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p. m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis or Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. Betty was born on Dec. 17, 1932, in Danville, to Clarence W. Wuest and Henrietta M. (Karl) Wuest. She is a member of St. Andrew Church and St. Andrew Altar Society, and a member of St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Pavey was a partner in the former Wuest Floor Service in Murphysboro. She married Edward Ray Pavey on Oct. 23, 1954, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro, and he survives. Other survivors include two sons Edward W. Pavey of St. Louis, and Donald R. Pavey of Murphysboro; four grandchildren Richard Pavey and Aimee Pavey, both of Creve Couer, and Tiona Pavey and Misty Pavey, both of Murphysboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law, C. William Bill and Ann Wuest, and James Jim and Rose Mary Wuest of Murphysboro; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Lefty Burdress of Tucson, Ariz. , Loretta and Robert (Bob) Varner of Murphysboro, Julia Judy and Robert (Bob) Heininger of Swansea, and Dorothy and Pat Timmons of Belleville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Margaret Rabe, and two brothers-in-law.

Modest E. Byrlay

HURST -- Modest E. Byrlay, 86, died at 10 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at home in Hurst. Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Walker Funeral Home in Hurst. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Monday at Walker Funeral Home. She was born April 12, 1918, in Hurst, the daughter of Gus and Ethel (Sparks) Bowden. She married Charlie Pochie who died Oct. 6, 1959, then later married John Byrlay who preceded her in death April 14, 1988. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Connie Pochie of Hurst; brother, Jim Bowden of Springfield; granddaughter, Stephany Kell and husband, Scottie of Hurst; grandson, Jon Pochie of Hurst; granddaughter Cathy and husband, Phil Rufly; granddaughter, Carman and husband, Kenny Allen; grandson Charlie Pochie; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands; brother, Louis, Orville, Morgan, Carl, August, Kinney, Bobby, and Billie and sister, JoAnn.

JOHNSTON CITY -- Hazel V. Felts, 94, died at 12:35 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Parkway Care Center in West Frankfort. Arrangements are incomplete at Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City.

Carmon Anglin

DONGOLA -- Carmon Anglin, 62, of Dongola, died at 6:30 p. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at home. He was born Aug. 3, 1942, in Thebes, the son of Elmer Clyde and Marie (Bailey) Anglin. He was married on March 9, 1968, to Virginia Fox. Carmon was a member of the Jesus Name Pentecostal Church at Tamms. He had been an attendant at Cheek's Shell and had worked at American Limestone and Main Brothers in Karnak. Survivors include his wife Virginia; one daughter, Melissa Anglin; one granddaughter, Bethany Rider, all of Dongola; one brother, Clyde Anglin of Delta, Mo.; one sister, Hattie Matlock of Vienna; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Charlotte and Marie Sue Anglin; twin granddaughters, Charlotte and Noelle Rider; three sisters, Jessie Tucker, Roberta Anglin, and Shirley Coleson; and three brothers, William, Albert, and Leslie. Services for Carmon Anglin will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, with Pastor Jenell Brookhouse and Rev. Glenn Fox officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thebes. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday and Tuesday until time of services at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola. Loren Michael Sanders

ZEIGLER -- Loren Michael Sanders, 64, of Cheyenne, Wyo. , formerly of Zeigler, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 3 p. m. today at Zeigler City Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Sanders was born Aug. 26, 1940, in West Frankfort, the son of Ada (Wallace) and Guy Sanders, both preceded him in death. He was a retired registered nurse at the VA Medical Center in Cheyenne, Wyo. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1985, with a bachelor of science degree. He was veteran of the Army and Navy serving two times in Vietnam era. Survivors include four sons, Matthew Sanders of Thompsonville, Steven Sanders of Marion, Timothy of Benton, and Jeffery Walden of Christopher; two brothers, Robert Sander of Du Quoin and Lester Sander of Johnston City; and 12 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one brother Sylvester Sanders.

Donald Seten

CREAL SPRINGS -- Donald Ralph Seten, 70, of Creal Springs, formerly of Harrisburg, died at 5:45 p. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 3 p. m. Tuesday at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg, with the Rev. Blaine Welker officiating. Burial will be in Lindale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Verla Grace Casey

CREAL SPRINGS -- Verla Grace Casey, 83, died at 11:55 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. She was born Aug. 7, 1921, to William and Dimple (Webb) Johnson. She married Howard Hundley Casey on Aug. 16, 1938, in Piggott, Ark. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and Bill Sullivan of Tunnel Hill and Barbara and Randy Jones of Litchfield; five grandchildren and their spouses, David and Amy Sullivan of Salem, Christopher and Stacy Newbold of Columbia, Mo. , Angela and Preston Harner of Tunnel Hill, Jason and Melissa Jones of Columbia, Mo. and Rebecca Jones of Litchfield; seven great-grandchildren, Emily, Erica and Luke Sullivan of Salem, Mo. , Alisa and Amanda Newbold of Columbia, Mo. , and Colton and Sarah Harner of Tunnel Hill; brothers, Clarence Johnson and companion, Mary Ann of Johnson City, Herschel and wife, Mary Ann Johnson of Vienna, and Lowell Bryan and wife, Maxine Johnson of Salem; and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Casey; father, William Johnson; mother, Dimple Johnson; sister, Ruth Webb and nephew, Steven Webb. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved her children and grandchildren. She dedicated most of her life to taking care of their needs. Her favorite past time was quilting. She always enjoyed spending time with her numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was a faithful member of the Community of Christ Church who had a strong belief in God. Services will be at 11 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Community of Christ Church in Tunnel Hill. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery in Tunnel Hill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today, Sept. 12, 2004, at Cosby- Sloan Funeral Home in Creal Springs. In Lieu of flowers, Verla's request was that donations be made to the Webb Cemetery or the Community of Christ Church, envelops will be provided at the funeral home.

ORIENT -- Thomas Eugene Owsley, 52, died at 1 p. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at his residence in St. Charles. Services will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday at the funeral home.

Nancy Covington

MOUNT VERNON -- Nancy L. Covington, 62, of Odin, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at home. Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday in Bethal Cemetery, with Pastor Mike Sheets officiating. There will be no public visitation and friends are requested to go directly to the cemetery. Newell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley A. Parrish

MURPHYSBORO -- Shirley A. Parrish, 68, of Murphysboro, passed away at 2:52 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rick Connelly officiating. Burial will be in Parrish Cemetery in Vergennes. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday and Tuesday until the hour of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parrish Cemetery Fund. Shirley was born on Sept. 13, 1935, in Harrison, to William and Ruth (Rendleman) Rains. Mrs. Parrish was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Christian Church. Before she became ill, she was a member of the Business and Professional Women, Eastern Star, and she had participated on a bowling league. She married Wiley Parrish on April 7, 1951, in Piggott, Ark. , and he survives. Other survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Michael Smith, Deanice and John Owens, and Wilene and Bob Hanna, all of Murphysboro; six grandchildren Tracie Roseme and her husband, Chris Roseme, Cathy Macke and her husband, Sid Macke, Veronica Clennon and her husband, Will Clennon, Matthew Hanna, Tara Owens, and Fred Owens; six great-grandchildren Rashea Roseme, Nikki Roseme, Aaron Roseme, Molly Ann Macke, Sidney Macke, and Dalton Owens; four brothers Bill Rains, Roger Rains, Jim Rains, and John Rains; four sisters Patricia, Wilma, Hilda, and Faye. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mildred Gage

VIENNA -- Mildred Gage, 80, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, Sept. 10, 2004, at home. She was born March 29, 1924, in Ganntown Community of Johnson County. She was the daughter of Emmett Holloway and Oma (Barnett) Holloway. Mildred was united in marriage to Paul V. Gage on Dec. 15, 1945, in the United Methodist Church parsonage at Harrisburg. Paul preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2002. Survivors include a son, Steve Gage and wife, Dixie of Girard, a grandson, Darby Ferguson and wife, Alyssa of Girard; two great-grandchildren, Kirsten Ferguson and Jacob Ferguson; and a brother, Emmett Holloway and wife, Bonita of Joliet. In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in death by a grandson, Derek Stewart Gage and a sister, June Lyons. Mildred, along with her husband Paul, owned and operated Gage's Convenience Store from 1968 until the early 1980's. They also operated a restaurant in Vienna for a number of years. Mildred was a member of the Vienna First Christian Church. She lover her home and devoted her attention and energies toward it. Services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with the Rev. Ed Hoke officiating. Interment will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p. m. BENTON -- Stanley Dean Harp, 69, died at 2:40 p. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Parkway Manor, Marion. Services will be held at 8 p. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Emmett Hanson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Harp was born June 9, 1935, in Villa Ridge, the son of Simeon and Bonnie (Caywood) Harp. He was a retired postal worker, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Benton Eagles and Benton Elks. He is survived by three sons, Richard Harp and wife, Marla of Benton, John Harp and wife, Barbara of Benton, David Harp of Decatur; their mother, Dee Harp of Benton; a daughter, Nancy Burgess of Benton; seven grandchildren, Derek and Craig Burgess, both of St. Louis, Jared and Josh Harp, both of Benton, Tosha Baker of Herrin, John Dunlap of Benton, David Dunlap, Bloomington; four great-grandchildren, Trevor and Mikayla Burgess, both of St. Louis, Brooke and Brandon Dunlap, both of Bloomington; five sisters, Natoma and husband, Rev. Emmett Hanson, Waldo, Fla. , Dimple King, Du Quoin, Darlene Drysdale, Tampa, Fla., Mary McMurphy, Inverness, Fla. , Bonnie Jean Watson, Merritt Island, Fla. , and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Harp was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Simeon J. Harp and Darrell Harp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

RALEIGH -- Toleda Gobin, 85, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004 at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, with the Rev. Bob Prather officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004 at the funeral home. She was born Oct. 31, 1918, in Pope County, to Hubert and Iola (Modglin) Prather. She married Roy H. Gobin, who preceded her in death in 1976. Mrs. Gobin was a member of the Apostolic Church of Wasson. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Nancy Gobin of Portage, Ind.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Brenda and Greg Young, Beverly and Kevin Baker; four great-grandchildren; five brothers, James, Willard, Bill, Lyndell and Tom Prather; three sisters, Junnita Stevens, Bonita Gobin and Onita Furlong; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lowell and John. And also a infant brother and sister.

Cecil Ramsey

PITTSBURG -- Cecil Ramsey, 92, of Pittsburg passed away at 11:35 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Kenneth Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the Becker Cemetery east of Johnston City. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p. m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Cecil was born on April 27, 1912, in West Frankfort, the son of Lee and Lizzie (Graul) Ramsey. He married Frieda (Jent) on Aug. 24, 1940, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death on July 31, 2000. They had one son, Gerald, who preceded them in death. Cecil was a farmer and a custodian at Pittsburg City Hall. He is survived by three sisters, LaVerne Edwards of Marion, Louise Harris of Marion, and Ruth Litton of Marion; three brothers, Don Ramsey of Johnston City, Charles Ramsey of Johnston City, and Carl E. Ramsey of Pittsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Leon.

Dorothy L. Byrd

GOREVILLE -- Dorothy L. Byrd, 74, died at 7:01 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. She was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Stonefort. She was the daughter of Eugene Bonds and Beulah (Cato) Bounds. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Linda of Vienna and Lloyd Byrd and Debbie of Dublin, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Shomo and Steve of Warwick, N. Y.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille McGuire of Pittsburg; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by four brothers, Rock, Tom, Robert and Francis Bonds; and a sister, Evelyn Richey. Dorothy was employed as a mental health technician at the Choate Mental Health Facility in Anna for 36 years prior to her retirement. Dorothy was a member of the Anna Moose Lodge 1346. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna and was currently attending the Pittsburg Freewill Baptist Church. Dorothy enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, fishing and dancing. Dorothy never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with the Rev. Eddie Donelson officiating. Interment will be in the Cana Cemetery, north of Goreville. Friends may call after 5 p. m. Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

McLEANSBORO -- Howard Bohner, 92, died at 11:25 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. Services will be at 11 a. m. Monday at I. O. O. F. Cemetery in McLeansboro, with the Rev. Gary Davenport officiating. There will be no public visitation and those attending the service should go directly to the cemetery. Gholson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ORIENT -- Thomas Eugene Owsley, 52, of St. Charles, Mo. formerly of Orient, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

Timothy Hogg

HARRISBURG -- Timothy Ryan Hogg, 24, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, south of Harrisburg. Services will be at 1 p. m. today, Sept. 11, in Reed Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Hogg Cemetery in Herod. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to 1 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the trust fund for Caleb and Emily Hogg.

Mary VanDermark

DU QUOIN -- Mary E. VanDermark, 88, died at 4:30 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in the Pinckneyville Community Hospital. At the request of Mrs. VanDermark, cremation services were held. A memorial graveside service for Mary and her husband, Harry, who died at 8:05 p. m. Dec. 21, 2000, will be at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday in IOOF Cemetery at Du Quoin, with the Rev. Shaw DeMent officiating. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

MARION -- Ruth Long, 89, died at 8:40 a. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Arrangements are incomplete at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin.
