DONGOLA -- Virginia Lingle, 84, of Dongola, died at 8:30 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at home. She was born on Feb. 4, 1920, in Wilmington, N. C. , a daughter of Francis and Emma Jane (Skipper) Jacobs. She married Glenn Lingle on Oct. 19, 1945, and he died on June 22, 2002. Mrs. Lingle was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, the Ladies Guild of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn Jr. and Rosann of Dongola, Robert and Venita of Anna, and Carl and Tammy of Dongola; seven grandchildren, Jason and wife Darla Lingle and Megan Lingle and friend David, all of Dongola, Stacey and husband Steven Busby of Anna, Christopher Lingle and friend Kellie of Cobden, Carla and husband Shane Holderfield of Dongola, Brian and wife Stephanie Lingle of Balcom, and Missy and husband Jamie Carter of Anna; eight great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Shaylee Lingle of Dongola, Seth Busby of Anna, Miranda and Caleb Lingle of Balcom, Cole Hansens of Dongola, and Brady and Kendall Carter of Anna; one brother, Francis Jacobs of Leland, N. C.; one sister, Elizabeth Musselwhite of Leland; one sister-in-law, Barbara Jacobs of Leland; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister. Services will be at 10 a. m. Nellie was born in Carbondale on Feb. 18, 1951, to Gene and Alma (Derringer) Brookmyer. She married William Kent Stevens in Carbondale on Aug. 28, 1970, and he survives of Winter Haven Fla. Nellie was a secretary for the Orange County Public School System in Orlando, Fla. She was a Baptist. Services will be at 1 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Deon Dutton officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to 1 p. m. Saturday at the funeral home. Thelma McCabe
MARION -- Thelma L. McCabe, 79, of Marion, died at 5 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center. Thelma was an only child, born Jan. 9, 1925, in Du Quoin, to Vern and Elsie (Saylor) Mounce. She married John McCabe on June 21, 1947, in Marion. Together they shared 56 years of marriage until his death on May 13, 2004. Thelma was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, Newcomers Club and St. Joseph's Altar Society. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Deanna and Dennis Loomer of Louisville, Ky. , and Nancy and Mike Benton of Marion, and three grandchildren, Sara A. Loomer of Louisville; Jennifer L. Benton of Evansville, Ind.; and Leslie N. Benton of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion, with Father Richard Mohr officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery

MARION -- Janet L. (Schiller) Davis, 78, beloved wife of Raymond W. Davis, Liberty Village, Marion, has gone to be with her Lord, Sept. 8, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. They were joined in holy matrimony in St. Louis, March 31, 1946. Janet was born Oct. 23, 1925, in Bethalto, the daughter of John and Matilda Schiller. She was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son, Randy W. , two brothers, Willard and Jackie and one sister, Lotus Boerger. She is survived by her husband; one son, Donald R. (Janice) Davis of LaVerne, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Sara Davis of Tallahassee, Fla.; one grandson, Russell W. (Robin) Davis of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Milred and (Robert) Renwick of Liberty Village; Marion, and Doris and Pete McDonald of Oklahoma; nephew, Benard Boerger of St. Louis, and nieces. Janet was a Baptist and was a very loving caring wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by those who knew her. Services will be at 2 p. m. Clarence 'Bones' Tabor
MARION -- Clarence Leroy 'Bones' Tabor, 68, of Fort Myers, Fla. , formerly of Marion, passed away Aug. 31, 2004. He was born Feb. 3, 1936, to Clarence and Betty (Piccora) Tabor. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Lou Ann (Hafeli) Tabor of Fort Myers; one son, Michael Tabor of Newburg, Ind.; two daughters, Vicki Pals of Effingham and Deborah Apke of Strasburg; one sister, Beverly Tweedle of Effingham; three grandsons, Derek and Brett Tabor and Todd Apke; three granddaughters, Heather Holscher, Heidi Goldstein and Tammy Winters; and seven great-grandchildren. Clarence retired from Illinois Central/Amtrak in 1997 and moved to Fort Myers in 1998. He was a U. S.
Army veteran and a member of the Church at Siesta Bay in Fort Myers. He had a great passion for golf and watching his grandsons participate in sports. A memorial service will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in the First Church of God, located on Broeking Road off Illinois 13 East in Marion.

COBDEN -- Grace M. Hunter, 100, of Cobden, died at 9:17 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at the Jonesboro Healthcare Center in Jonesboro. She was born March 22, 1904, in Makanda, the daughter of Harvey L. and Nellie Carter Hunter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cobden and worked at the Cobden Post Office for several years. She is survived by several cousins, Helen Garner of Anna; Margaret Sims of Chicago; Glenn Moore of Jonesboro; Mary Alice Avato of Southwick, Mass.; Mary Louise Pickett of Gainesville, Fla.; Jack Pickett of Panama City, Fla.; and Ward Carter of Boston, and other relatives and friends. Services for Grace M. Hunter will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden, with the Rev. Allen Speers officiating. Services will be held at 11 a. m. today, Sept. 9, 2004, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale, with Father Chris Piasta officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. A Christian wake service was held at 7 p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Marilyn was born Aug. 12, 1953, in Detroit, to Gerald and Mary (Dunn) Repeck. She married Stephen Thomas Tyman on June 21, 1980, in Detroit. He survives and is of Carbondale. Other survivors include one son, Damon Tyman of Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Shannon Tyman of Philadelphia; and her mother, Mary Repeck of Holland, Mich. She is preceded in death by her father. Marilyn retired from SIUC as an instructor in the Computer Science Department. CARTERVILLE -- Abe North, 91, of Carterville, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a. m. He married Alice Hill on Dec. 30, 1939, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death in 2000. Abe is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda Haley of Fairview Heights and Barbara and Bill Lavier of Louisville, Ky; one granddaughter, Lisa and husband Tom Burrow of Belleville; two grandsons, Christopher and Jason of Belleville; and one sister, Olive Hadden of Genoa City, Wis. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Abe was a WWII veteran serving in the U. S. Navy Seabees as a chief petty officer. He was at Omaha Beach in Normandy during the D-Day Invasion. He was an operating engineer for Local 318 and was serving as business agent when he retired in 1978. He is also the past president of Local 318. He was a member of the Herrin Elks and Carbondale VFW. Abe enjoyed family, friends and the outdoors. Army Corp of Engineers. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Murphysboro. Mr. Caraway was a farmer and was an officer of the Farm Bureau board. He had served on the ASCS committee as president and served on the ASCS board for 26 years. He is survived by one daughter, Georgia Caraway of Champaign; two grandchildren, Sean Morefield of Champaign and Anne Morefield of Anna; and three sisters, Ethel Miller and Cleo Caraway, both of Carbondale, and Betty Nettland of Lincoln, Neb. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Charley and Wayne Caraway. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

He married Ella Louise Allen on Aug. 2, 1944, and she survives. Roy was retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections and was a Pentecostal. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Rae and Troy Stallings of Johnston City; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy Robert 'Bob' and Mary Cagle of Merrillville, Ind.; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy Patrick 'RC' and Barbara Cagle of Johnston City; a daughter and son-in-law, Julia and John Ryder of McAlester, Okla.; a son and daughter-in-law, James Robert and Molly Cagle of Spillertown; a son, Brian Keith Cagle of Marion; a son, Edward Eugene Jackson of West Frankfort; a daughter, Vicki Ann Cagle of Johnston City; a daughter, Carol Ann Jackson of Johnston City; 24 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine and Bud Wallach and Virginia and Charles Nix, all of Johnston City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, five brothers and two sisters.

Gerald 'Jerry' Engelhart
ANNA-JONESBORO -- Gerald 'Jerry' L. Engelhart, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, of cancer. Mr. Engelhart was a native of Anna- Jonesboro and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, La. Mr. Engelhart was nationally known as an expert in deep-water caisson construction for major river bridges. His career started in 1949 when he graduated with a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Illinois. Upon graduating second in his class, he received the I. O. Baker Award from the university. Over the next 50 years he participated in the construction of major bridges all across the country, from the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge in Washington, D. C. , to the proposed Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State. However, the bulk of his career was spent on the Mississippi River, where he was involved in the construction of 10 bridge crossings from Cape Girardeau to New Orleans. Some of his significant achievements included the Hale Boggs Bridge in Luling-Destrehan, La. , where he devised a method to prolong the floating capabilities of a caisson to prevent the project from being shut down because of springtime flooding. Mr. Engelhart was honored by the national magazine Engineering News Record as a Newsmaker in 1978 for this achievement. Another significant achievement was the Choctawhatchie Bridge in Destin, Fla. , where he set a record erecting seven bridge spans (952 feet of bridge deck) in seven days. The national magazine Civil Engineering named this project as a finalist for the 1995 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award. He also worked on the Houston Ship Channel Tunnel, where he was instrumental in devising a method to remove the abandoned tunnel for the purpose of improving channel navigation. Mr. Engelhart was a member of the prestigious Beavers, an honorary organization of heavy engineering construction professionals; a member of the Associated General Contractors; a life member in the American Society of Civil Engineers; and an honorary member of the American Segmental Bridge Institute. Mr. Engelhart was preceded in death by his parents, Erhart Engelhart and Anita Rastel of Jonesboro; his brother, Marvin Engelhart of Murphysboro; and his first wife, Veda Bartle of Mineral Point, Wis. Mr. Engelhart is survived by his wife of 21 years, Mrs. Audrey Ragland Engelhart of Baton Rouge; his two daughters, Cindy Engelhart of Alexandria, Va. , and Sandra Duet of Luling, La.; and his son-in-law, Andrew Duet Jr. Interment was in the National Cemetery

Dr. Barbara Cordoni Kupiec
MURPHYSBORO -- Dr. Barbara Cordoni Kupiec, 70, of Murphysboro, died at 6:50 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Peoria, the daughter of Edward Keene and Grace Wolpert Keene. On June 9, 1984, she was married to Greg Kupiec. She graduated from Southwestern University and earned both her master's degree and educational doctorate from Duke University. She was a nationally recognized authority on learning disabilities, serving on both a presidential commission and a governor's commission for special education. She established the first program in the nation to recognize and assist college students with learning disabilities. She led this program, known as Project Achieve, until her retirement from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She was Teacher of the Year in 1986 at SIUC and in 1997 was awarded the Learning Disabilities Association of America's Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Cordoni Kupiec was a member and past president of the Audubon Society and was active in the Stage Company as a director and an actor. She was a world traveler and was interested in birding and wildlife. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carbondale. Survivors include her husband, Greg Kupiec of Murphysboro; one daughter, Heather Ferry of Atlanta; two sons, Mark McGrath of Baltimore and Maj. Lance Cordoni, MD, U. S.
Army, stationed in Hawaii; eight grandchildren, Ian and Kyle Ferry, Brian and Nicole Ely, Tyler Cordoni, and Jack, George and Tess McGrath; her mother, Grace Werner of Murphysboro; and one sister, April Kiskaddon of Boston. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Tara Lynn Cordoni-Ely, in 2000. Memorial services will be at 11 a. m. today in Grace United Methodist Church, located on Tower Road in Carbondale, with the Rev. Sally Hamon officiating. Interment services will follow immediately in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
