ROYALTON -- Charles 'Charlie' Spiller, 71, of Royalton, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, in Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Teddy Clark officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p. m. today at the funeral home. He was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Blairsville, to Rolla and Lula (Morris) Spiller. He married Edna Taitt on Feb. 17, 1951, in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Nov. 27, 2001. He then married Bonnie Gaddis of Royalton on Jan. 17, 2002. Charlie is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of Royalton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Delbert and Christina Spiller of Colp, Lowell and Sue Spiller of Mulkeytown, Darrell and Judy Spiller of Energy, and Brian and Rita Spiller of Herrin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Steve Watson of Herrin, Allison and Jim Peacock of Goreville, Amy and Bob Brothers of Carterville; one brother, Lester Spiller of Carterville; 11 grandchildren, Lanie Barbee of Louisville, Ashlee Spiller and Myra Spiller, both of Colp, Shelley Spruell and Brent Watson, both of Herrin, Steve Watson Jr. of Goreville, Dara Spiller of Energy, Mark Spiller of Cambria, Derek Spiller of Christopher, and Lindsey Brothers and Sidney Brothers, both of Carterville; four great-grandchildren, Michael Spiller and Hunter Spiller, both of Christopher, Zachary M. Spruell of Herrin, and Emily Spiller of Colp; four stepchildren and their spouses, Bobby and Lois Gaddis, Bonnie and Richard Bearden, Betty and Richard Colyer, and John and Cathy Gaddis, all of Royalton; seven stepgrandchildren, Chad Green, Bobbi Webster, Tim Bearden, John Gaddis, Ryan Gaddis, Jimmy Gaddis and Robby Gaddis; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna; his parents; and his brother, Herman. Charlie was a self-employed carpenter for more than 30 years. He owned and operated Spiller Construction Company for more than 20 years. He was a Protestant and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Charlie enjoyed his work and owning antique cars, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife, his children and their families, as well as with his stepchildren and their families. JOHNSTON CITY -- Llewellyn Z. 'Van' Van Vorst, 76, of Johnston City, died at 6:50 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Danny Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Llewellyn was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Plainwell, Mich. , the son of Charles and Violet (Inman) Van Vorst. He married Gertrude Meyer on Sept. 18, 1948, in Mannheim, Germany, and she survives. Llewellyn retired from Maytag in 1993 after working there for 24 years. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the
Army. He was a member of the Pittsburg Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Connett of Vancouver, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Ute Meyer of Canyon Lake, Texas; one stepson, Dieter Strate of Mannheim, Germany; two grandchildren, Jim and wife Marcy Connett and Matthew and wife Carrie Connett, all of Vancouver, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Arria and Brendon Connett. He was preceded in death by his parents.

ANNA -- Nancy Davis Sorrels, 78, of Anna, passed away at 10:17 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, surrounded by her family. Nancy was born Feb. 3, 1926, in Anna, the daughter of Ora and Clella (Davis) Davis. She married Bill Sorrels on Sept. 9, 1945, in Anna. He preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1989. Surviving Nancy are 'Nancy's Girls,' Cindy and husband Larry Swope and Mindy and husband Larry Carter, all of Anna, Cecelia and husband James Hodges of Gatesville, Texas, and Nan and husband Maurice Ginsburg of Makanda; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sandra Davis of Anna; her grandchildren, Jason and Erin Karraker, Julie Hand and Eric, Jay, David and Neely Carter, Chris Hodges, Lauren Shelton and Michael Joe, and Nicholas Ginsburg; her great-grandchildren, Danton, Cody and Kayla Hand; other relatives; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and one grandson, Anthony Hodges. Nancy was a very engaging and social person with many interests. She loved to dote over her grandchildren and cherished her time with her many friends by playing cards and planning parties. Her knack for quilting and handiwork won Best of Show at the 2003 PAST Quilt Turning. Her love for Christmas has become a family tradition and will be passed down in her loving fashion for many years and generations to come. Services for Nancy Davis Sorrels will be held at 11 a. m. Hopson (Mike Finan), and the late Daniel G. Hopson. She was the dear daughter of the late C. Edward and Edith Gray. She was also a dear aunt, great-aunt and cousin.

COULTERVILLE -- Fay E. Jebron, nee Crain, 84, of Coulterville, passed away at 5:30 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in the Sparta Community Hospital. Fay was born in the Coulterville area on Feb. 16, 1920, a daughter of Harry and Mary (Hannah) Crain. She was a resident of Lively Grove Township her entire life. She married George A. Jebron in May 1938 in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded her in death in October 1984. She was a loving and devoted homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include her children, Gloria Jebron of Coulterville, Bud and wife Omah Jebron of Coulterville, Liz and husband Izzy Foster of Sparta, Joe and wife Diana Jebron of Coulterville, Ray and wife Kelli Jebron of Coulterville, and son-in-law Sanford Wisely of Coulterville and Marissa; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and her special pet dog, Bingo. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; one brother; one son, James Jebron; and one daughter, Rose Wisely. Services will be held at 11 a. m. James B. 'Jim' King II
CARBONDALE -- After a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, James B. 'Jim' King II, 59, peacefully passed from this life on Sept. 11, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Sept. 26, 1944, in Washing-ton, D. C. , to James Beverly and Edyth Mary (Williams) King. Jim's fondest childhood memories were summers spent on the farm of his paternal grandparents in King George County, Va. , where he gained an abiding personal faith, an inquisitive nature and an ingrained work ethic. From the tender age of 10, Jim spent his youth 'gainfully employed' in such entrepreneurial endeavors as lawn care, paper routes and a shoe-shine route. Jim truly loved his country and proudly served in the United States Navy from his active duty enlistment at age 17 as a seaman recruit on July 12, 1962, until his resignation as a lieutenant from the U. S. Naval Reserve in 1981. During his naval career, he worked with project SHAD in Pearl Harbor; attended submarine school in New London, Conn.; and served aboard Polaris nuclear submarines. He was a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Sam Rayburn SSB (N) 635 (Gold) and served as an intelligence officer in the Naval Reserve. Jim graduated from Northwood High School, Silver Spring, Md. , in 1962. After his active duty military service, he attended the University of Maryland, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1973, and passing the CPA exam the same year. He served the University of Maryland as an internal consultant as well as director of the budget before moving to Maine in 1978 to accept a faculty position at the University of Maine, Machias. While in Maine, he met and married the love of his life, Maryon (nee Frederick), of Bangor. Together they owned and operated an H&R Block tax business, earned their MBA degrees in 1981, and started a family before heading westward to pursue their doctorate degrees at Indiana University. After completing his doctorate in 1987, Jim accepted a faculty position in the School of Accountancy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His love of his students and his dedication to his profession is evidenced in the accolades he received at SIUC, including his appointment as the Groennert/Emerson Teaching Excellence Professor as well as being twice named as Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher in the College of Business and Administration. Unwilling to abandon his connection with his students and colleagues, he continued to teach throughout his illness. His compassion, commitment and integrity will be sorely missed by those whose lives he touched. In addition to his professional activities, Jim was an active member of his community. He served the Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader and assistant scoutmaster, was an active member of the Lions Club, and was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. No one could have been more devoted to his family. He leaves many to mourn his loss Maryon, his partner and loving wife of 24 years; his cherished children, Valerie Edyth, 29, of Bar Harbor, Maine, and James Thomas, 23, and Katherine Ellen, 18, both of Carbondale; his dearly loved sister, Patsy Estes and her husband, Jerry, and his niece, Kelly, and nephew, Jamie, all of Marietta, Ga.; his devoted mother-in-law, Ellen Frederick of Bangor; his beloved siblings-in-law, Stephen and Cathy Frederick of Warren, Maine, Philip and Betsy Frederick of Surry, Maine, Martha and Willie Vicens of North Andover, Mass. , and Jim Frederick and Kristiina Iisa of Atlanta; his beloved stepfather, the Rev. Edward Bley of Virginia; his stepsiblings, Don and Beverly Bley and Janet Sullivan, all of Virginia; his paternal aunt, Virginia 'Sis' Motley of Washington, D. C.; his cousins, Joem Henning, John Davis, Pete Davis, Diana Hess and Lynn Motley; and his much-loved nieces and nephews, Niki, Isaac, Jessie, Sam, Jake, Jody, Luke, Carrie, Noelle, Leigh, Bill, Anna and Erika, as well as their spouses and children. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edyth, and his very special father-in-law, William J. Frederick Sr. Jim's final resting place will be next to his beloved father-in-law, William J. Barbara W. Schmulbach
CARBONDALE -- Barbara W. Schmulbach, 71, died at 9:46 p. m. Sept. 9, 2004, at St. Louis University Hospital. Her death was the result of severe head injuries from a fall in her home. She was born in Charlotte, N. C. , on Oct. 4, 1932, the first child of Rufus and Pauline (Goodnight) Williamson. She was married on June 11, 1955, to C. David Schmulbach in Hampton, Va. Survivors include her husband, David of Carbondale; her daughter Angela and son-in-law Robert Field of Los Alamos, N. M. , and two granddaughters, Elisabeth and Stephanie Field; her son Eric, daughter-in-law Alison and grandson Nicholas of Champaign; and her daughter, Ellen, of Carbondale. Her sister Louise and brother-in-law R. H. Fann of Clinton, N. C. , and her brother Rufus and sister-in-law Shirley Williamson of Clinton, N. C. , also survive. Among survivors of her large extended family are many nieces, nephews and cousins and two aunts. She was preceded in death by her parents and her half-brother, Bill Williamson. Barbara attended her senior year of high school at Campbell College, Buies Creek, N. C. She received a bachelor's degree in secondary education at East Carolina College in 1952 and started her teaching career in chemistry and biology at Hampton High School, Hampton, Va. After her marriage and the birth of her first child in Urbana, she devoted the next 17 years to raising her children; managing budgets; learning numerous skills like sewing, hat making, economy cooking, upholstering, drapery-making and carpentry, to name a few; serving her community and church on various committees and working groups; and working tirelessly for the Republican Party. She began in 1971 to take courses in mathematics, and in 1973 she was appointed to the mathematics faculty at Carbondale Community High School. She initiated the honors calculus course and taught it for many years. Barbara was identified as a master teacher, and for three consecutive years (1987-1989) she received the President's Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching of Mathematics. These awards were given to the top 12 to 16 high school mathematics teachers in the State of Illinois. She was also a supervising teacher for student teachers from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Although Barbara would never win a popularity contest among students, the real measure of her contribution to education and to the effectiveness of her teaching methods was the success of her students in advanced placement exams and college mathematics. Her greatest satisfaction came from hearing of her students' success in college mathematics. Her extracurricular activities in the high school were as coach and sponsor for the scholar bowl team and faculty adviser for the wrestling cheerleaders. Barbara retired from teaching in 1990 and enrolled in the fall 1990 class of the master's program in landscape architecture at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N. C. A career in landscape architecture had been her dream for many years. She graduated in 1993. Barbara gave freely of her professional services to friends and the church in creating landscape designs. Barbara was appointed in 1985 by Gov. James Thompson as the at-large representative to the inaugural board of trustees of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora and served in that role for three years. Barbara was an avid reader and enjoyed travel, gardening, home remodeling and family genealogy. Her favorite interest was gourmet cooking. She opened her home not only to friends, but also to many Rotary group study exchange teams. Her compassion was expressed in the support she gave in helping host families care for young children from Belize, who came to this country for orthopedic surgery under the Rotary Belize Crippled Children's Project. Barbara was a tower of wisdom, strength and support to her family and friends. She will be sorely missed. A private funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, Sept. 24, at Valhalla Garden of Memory Chapel in Belleville. Memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Carbondale First Christian Church (DOC). Hazel was born on April 8, 1910, in Equality, the daughter of Percy and Viola (Vincent) Spitzner. She married William Stevens, who preceded her in death. She later married Clarence Felts on Jan. 9, 1959. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1989. Hazel was a housewife and an avid quilter. She was the oldest living charter member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Johnston City. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda and husband Bob Hendrix of West Frankfort; a son, Bill and wife Pat Stevens of Johnston City; a daughter, Sharon Gibbens of Johnston City; a son, the Rev. JONESBORO -- Deanna Schott, 35, of Jonesboro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in Union County Hospital. She was born on Nov. 30, 1968, in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Leonard 'Buzz' and Phyllis (Campbell) Bixby. She married David G. Schott on Sept. 9, 1995, in Wolf Lake. Deanna graduated from Red Bud High School and then attended St. Louis Community College Meramec in St. Louis. She worked as a teacher's assistant at Jonesboro Grade School. She served as Girl Scout leader for Troop No. 129, was treasurer for Jonesboro Junior High Boosters and Union County Soccer league, served as a past PTO president at Jonesboro Elementary, and was active in the ballfield fund-raiser for the school. She was also a member of the A-J Huddle Club at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. There's a place inside the heart where love lives always . . . and where nothing beautiful can ever be forgotten. I've learned throughout the years nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost. Those we cherish will always live on in memory and in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her father; one nephew, Jordan Figura; and her grandfather, Grampy Bixby. Services will be conducted at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Revs. David Eidson and John Boyd officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p. m. Louise Meyers
WALTONVILLE -- Louise Meyers, 74, died at 5:45 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital, Mount Vernon. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Long Prairie Christian Church. Mrs. Meyers was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Jefferson County, to Charles H. Elliston and Pearl (Reynolds) Elliston. She married Harold William 'Bill' Meyers on May 2, 1946, in Mount Vernon. He died March 20, 1996. Survivors include two sons, Bob Meyers and wife, Mary of Lake of Egypt, and Glen Meyers and wife, Donna, of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews survive. Daisy G. White
ANNA -- Daisy G. White, 93, died at 9 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at City Care Center in Anna. She was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Union County, the daughter of John and Minnie (Elkins) Pitts. She married Alva M. White Nov. 25, 1927, in Monroe, Mich. He preceded her in death July 24, 1995. She is survived by six children, Bob and wife Shirley White of Cape Girardeau, Fran and husband Lyle Boes of Sioux Falls, S. D. , Bill and wife Kathy White of Bloomington, Don and wife Margaret White of Murphysboro, Carl and wife Shirley White of Makanda, and Mary Ruth and husband Don Hawk of Anna; two sisters, Evelyn Boomer and Helen Fear of Anna; 16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Nova West, Violet Pitts and Mae Boyer; and one brother, John West. Daisy was a member of Jonesboro Methodist Church. Daisy and her late sister Nova West operated the Wagon Wheel restaurant located at Illinois 146 and old U. S. 51 'Y' in the 1950s. She was an excellent cook and loved preparing family meals. She was a beautiful, generous and complete lady who never met a stranger and always greeted people wherever she went. She touched lives of many people during her nearly 94 years on this earth. Daisy will be sorely missed by her entire family and all who knew her. Services for Mrs. Daisy G. White will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with Todd Hawk, her grandson, officiating. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery. Herbert Nolan Smith
SALEM -- Herbert Nolan Smith, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Decatur, Ala. He was born July 19, 1934, in Salem, the son of William and Mammie Smith. He married Ruby Smith in 1956, and they had four sons and one daughter together. They divorced in 1974. Herbert then married Iva Gean Smith, and they had one daughter together. Survivors include his sons, Herbert, Larry, Tommy and Buddy Smith. Herb has four brothers and six sisters. He also has 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Gladys Smith; his brothers, Floyd and Tony Smith; and his sisters, Velma and Elsee Moore.
Ruth Rose Rendleman
CARBONDALE -- Ruth Rose Rendleman, 99, of Carbondale, died at 12:31 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Oak Grove Care and Rehab Center in Carbondale. She was born on Aug. 11, 1905, in Union County, a daughter of the late David and Ida (Hess) Rendleman. Ms. Rendleman was a retired state worker and a graduate of the Southern Illinois Normal University, now Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She was a Presbyterian. Survivors include two nephews, Charles D. Friedline of Jonesboro and James R. Friedline of Williamson, Ga.; other relatives and friends. Services for Ruth Rose Rendleman will be at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 in the Anna City Cemetery. Crain Funeral Home is in charge of her arrangements.
