Walter Fred Sitter

ANNA -- Walter Fred Sitter, 81, died at 7:35 a. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He was born April 7, 1923, in Union County, the son of Fred Nellie (Brown) Sitter. He was married to Helen Marie Martin on Sept. 7, 1944, in Cairo. Walter is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Sitter of Anna; three children, Walter Stanley and wife Becky Sitter of Hot Springs, Ark. , Dennis and wife Loretta Sitter of Cobden, Rose Marie and husband, Chris Walker of Anna; two sisters, Jewell Hale of New Palestine, Ind. , Afton Stephens of Sun Valley, Idaho, four grandchildren, Jessica Renee and Tyler Dennis Sitter, Jason Ray Walker, Christopher Lee Walker; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glen Sitter and a sister, Maxine Crowder. He attended the First Baptist Church in Anna, and along with his wife, Helen owned and operated Union Co. Sporting Goods in Anna from 1958 to 1987. He loved to hunt and golf besides being an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. Services for Mr. Walter Fred Sitter will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Tim Sadler officiating. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Friends may call at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna from 5 to 9 p. m. today and on Sunday until the hour of service.

Roy Gibson

MAKANDA -- Roy Gibson, 84 died at 6:30 a. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home. Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lois Rae (Turken) Feigenbaum

MURPHYSBORO -- Lois Rae Turken Feigenbaum was born in St. Louis, on Oct. 1, 1928, to Mary (Krislavsky) and David S. Turken. She married Robert E. Feigenbaum on April 11, 1948. Their union was blessed with three loving and dedicated children, Sue, Robyn and Keith. Lois was an adventurer, she loved life and never passed up a chance to experience it to its fullest. She was a woman aviator and started her flying career in 1962 after moving to Southern Illinois. Within 18 months of her first solo she obtained her private license, multi-engine rating, instrument rating, certified flight instructor rating and was only the 78th woman to receive an airline transport pilot certificate. During her life Lois received many honors for her dedication and hard work in the field of aviation. Lois went on to become the president of the Ninety-Nines, (an International Organization of Women Pilots), and was appointed to the President's Advisory Board on aviation by President Nixon. Her obstacles were many, but she pursued her dream to help open the doors in the field of aviation for all women. Lois died Sept. 14, 2004, after a brief battle with cancer. Lois is survived by her husband and lifelong love, Bob. Daughters and sons-in-law Sue and Gene Ackley Missouri, Robyn and Jim McHale of Naples, Fla. and son and daughter-in-law Keith and Paula Feigenbaum of Murphysboro. Grandchildren JM Gustafson, Jeffrey Long and great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Mark and Melissa Turken. Services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Berger Memorial 4715 McPherson Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108. Visitation will be at 3 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Sinai Cemetery. Memorials may be made in honor of Lois Feigenbaum at the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, 223 N. Terrace St. , Atchison, KS 66002.

Elizabeth 'Betty' Jones

MURPHYSBORO -- Elizabeth 'Betty' (Flaningam) Jones, age 84, of Murphysboro, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, after a long illness. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. Sunday and Monday until hour of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary or the donor's choice. Betty was born on Oct. 15, 1919, in Champaign, to William A. Flaningam and Edith C. (Coulson) Flaningam. Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro. She was a member of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary and she helped deliver meals on wheels. She married Omer W. Jones Jr. , April 25, 1942, in Champaign, and he preceded her in death on April 27, 1984. Survivors include one son and his wife, Thomas H. Jones and Deborah Jones; one daughter, Barbara Ann Jones, all of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Laura James and her husband, Greg James of Vergennes, Amanda Hine and her husband, Jamie Hine and Thomas W. Jones all of Murphysboro; two step-grandchildren, Adam Rowe and Marybeth Rowe, both of Murphysboro; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Hine and Grant Hine of Murphysboro and Garrett James of Vergennes; three nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, one brother and her parents.

Walter Seth

CARBONDALE -- Walter F. Seth, 88, died at 1:25 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in Jackson County Rehab and Care Center in Murphysboro. Memorial services and visitation will be at 11 a. m. Monday in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel on Old Illinois 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro. The cremains will be interred in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park.

Freeman Alex Keller

ANNA -- Freeman Alex Keller, 81, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, after a short illness at Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born in Coulterville, July 31, 1923, a son of Andrew and Jennie (Hodge) Keller. He married Marjorie Liske on Jan. 27, 1943, and she survives. Freeman was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Carrol P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Freeman was a World War II veteran, having served with the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion with Patton's Third Army. He retired from Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling after 30 years of service. After retiring and moving to Anna, he worked as a custodian for Mount Moriah Lutheran Church while pursing varied interests including automobiles, traveling, tinkering and square dancing. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Keller of Anna; sons, Alex 'Mike' (Linda) Keller of Thousand Oaks, Calif. , Marvin (Mary Ann)Keller of Tiskilwa; Jerry (Alice) Keller of Makanda; daughter, Eileen (Lance) Noone of Mahomet; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Yonia McClain of St. Libory and Viola Bittle of Chico, Calif.; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 10 a. m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer and Dr. Richard Hertenstein officiating. Interment will be in National Cemetery in Mound City with full military Honors by the Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna. Prayer service will be at 8 p. m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Cheryl J. Kelly

SWANWICK -- Cheryl J. Kelly, 56, of Swanwick, died at 2:45 a. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born on Nov. 26, 1947, in Du Quoin, a daughter of Loren Gene and Josephine (Kellerman) Reidelberger. She was united in marriage to John G. Kelly on Oct. 13, 1972, in Bastrop, La. , and he survives. Cheryl was a clerk at Decca/MCA Records in Pinckneyville for many years and then worked as a seamstress at Bridal Originals in Sparta. Survivors include her parents; husband; one son, John Patrick Kelly of Swanwick; one daughter, Amanda Kelly of Pinckneyville; two sisters, Debbie Magerkurth and husband, Ray of Willisville and Brenda Gilliam and husband Rich of Du Quoin; one brother, Loren Reidelberger Jr. and wife Vickie of Du Quoin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law; Osa Kelly. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Bethel Cemetery at Swanwick. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p. m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004 at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville. Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy Mitchell

CARBONDALE -- Dorothy S. Mitchell, 82, died at 12:33 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p. m. Thursday in Mound City National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a. m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Class of 1940, Carbondale Community High School.

CARBONDALE -- Nina Hoffman, 93, died at 9:30 a. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home. Arrangements are pending at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Danny W. 'Bud' Chipman

MARION -- Danny W. 'Bud' Chipman, 73, of Marion, formerly of Chicago, passed away at 1:34 p. m. , Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Danny was born on July 24, 1931, in Kennett, Mo. He was united in marriage to Dolores J. Abel on July 22, 1955, in Chicago, and they shared more than 49 years of marriage. He answered the call of his country, serving in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 and continuing in the Army Reserve. For many years, before his retirement on Sept. 1, 2003, he was the owner and operator of five restaurants in Chicago with three locations: Danny's Diner, the Belmont Restaurant and Grand and Austin Grill. He was a certified private pilot and, through the years, the owner of 10 private planes. He was an accomplished Chet Atkins-style guitar player and enjoyed playing when time allowed. For the past six years he enjoyed spending time on the Lake of Egypt with his family and, following his retirement, moved to the lake with his wife, Dolores, on Sept. 15, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Dolores J. Chipman of Marion; three daughters, Karen Davidson of the Lake of Egypt, Susan Valles of Corona, Calif. , and Sandra and husband Rinado Cardone of Lake Ellsinore, Calif.; two sons, Michael Chipman of Indiana and Jeffrey Chipman of Sycamore; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Becky Dunlap of Arizona; two brothers, Billy Chipman and Mickey Gray, both of Florida; other family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rhoda Gray, his father and his stepfather. Arrangements for Danny W. 'Bud' Chipman have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court St. , Marion. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 to 3 p. m. today at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 3 p. m. today at the funeral home, with Dr. Bob Wagner officiating.

Elvira Giancone

BENTON -- Elvira Giacone, 83, died at 1:45 p. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Benton. Services will be at 10 a. m. Monday, Sept. 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton, with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be after 9:15 a. m. on Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice or to Hospice of the Good Samaritan or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Brandon Tindall

BENTON -- Brandon Lee Tindall, 21 died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields. Services will be at 1 p. m. Monday in the Benton Civic Center, with the Revs. Dan Whitfield, Mark Minor and Jim Muir officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. Sunday at the Civic Center and after 10 a. m. to 1 p. m. Monday at the Civic Center. Memorials may be made to the Brandon Tindall Support Fund. The Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Herbert

DU QUOIN -- Frances A. Herbert, 56, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:35 p. m. , Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at home. Frances had worked as a cosmetologist. She had also been a beauty school director in California. She was a member of Second Baptist Church of Du Quoin. She was born on July 28, 1948, in Du Quoin, the daughter of Silas and Alma Ruth (Graff) Morgan. She married Millard 'Joe' Herbert on March 9, 1968, in Dowell, and he survives. She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Jessica Herbert of Los Angeles, Calif. , one daughter and son-in-law, Tobie L. and Jeff Harkless of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Sam Herbert, Kody Harkless and Landry Harkless; her mother, Alma Ruth Morgan of Du Quoin; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Silas and Mel Morgan of Du Quoin and Gary Morgan of Elkville. She was preceded in death by her father and three brothers, Tom Morgan, Steve Morgan and Larry Morgan. Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Revs. Silas Morgan and Richard Wakefield officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Interment will be in the Elkville Cemetery. Friends may make memorials to the Luke Memorial Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.

ADDIEVILLE -- Benjamin Harrison Gaebe Jr. , 74, died at 12:45 a. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 10 a. m. Monday, Sept. 20, in the Zion United Church of Christ in Addieville, with the Rev. Ken Richter officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. Sunday at Campagna Funeral Home in Nashville and from 8 to 10 a. m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Addieville Zion United Church of Christ Building Fund or the Sunday School/Bible School Program and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Erwin Frager

CHESTER -- Erwin A. 'Buddy' Frager, 72, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at home. He was the beloved son of the late Morris J. and late Kate S. Frager. Mr. Frager was a dear brother and brother-in-law of Marian (late Bernard H. ) Ross of Northbrook and the late Bernice (late Harry) Fred and a dear uncle and great-uncle. Services will be at noon Monday, Sept. 20 at Berger Memorial Chapel, 4715 McPherson Ave. , St. Louis. Interment will be in Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery, 7500 Olive, University City, Mo. Samaul Cropper

MOUNT CARMEL -- Samuel Cropper, 80, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Mr. Cropper was cremated, there will be no visitation. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is in charge of arrangements.

Lowell Mitchell

CHRISTOPHER -- Lowell Mitchell, 91, died at 6:15 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 19, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Revs. Manuel Jackson and Harold Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be after 6 p. m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Mitchell worked for 40 years in the coal mines. He also served two terms as sub-district board member. He retired in 1980. He was a member of Church of God in Christopher. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Mr. Mitchell was born on June 13, 1913, in Broughton, to Herman Mitchell and Nella Pulliam. He married Jennie Kramer in 1936 in Benton. They shared 65 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2001. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Mary Mitchell of Valier; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Linda Kondoudis of Buckner and Brenda and Herbie Chapman of Carterville; eight grandchildren, Mike and wife Tina Kondoudis of Christopher, Kenneth Lowell and wife Lisa Kondoudis of Mulkeytown, Richy and Kevin Kondoudis, both of Buckner, Josh Chapman of Carterville, Greg Mitchell of Benton, Jenna Hood of West Frankfort, and Sheri Gunter of West Frankfort; 17 great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Amos and Rosemary Mitchell of Sesser. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles; and three sisters, Clorine Straub, Neva Furlow and Wilma Utley. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois of Marion and will be accepted at the funeral home.

MARION -- Jerry D. Wolaver, 63, of Marion, passed away at 12:13 p. m. , Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 11 a. m. , Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Kenny Blumenstock officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cana Cemetery in Goreville. Mr. Wolaver was born on Aug. 11, 1941, in Goreville, to Elmer and Cora (Cox) Wolaver. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ritchey and Wendy Wolaver of Bakersfield, Calif. , and Trevor Wolaver of Thompsonville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Neil McRoy of Marion and Amanda and Andy Meadows of Mulkeytown; 10 grandchildren, Amanda Wolaver, Justin Wolaver, Kristen Wolaver, Dustin Wolaver, Trevor Wolaver, Rosebrook Wolaver, McKenzie Wolaver, Haylie Wolaver, Cody McRoy and Tiffany McRoy; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Billie and Virginia Wolaver of Creal Springs and Bobbie Wolaver of Creal Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Mr. Wolaver worked as a brick mason for many years. He was a member of the Brick Mason's Union and the Marion Elks Lodge 800. CARBONDALE -- Julie F. McHale, 88, of St. Louis, formerly of Carbondale, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at home. Mrs. McHale was born on Aug. 19, 1916, in Boskeydell, to Homer and Ella (Cooper) Fligor. She married James. F. McHale, who preceded her in death. She graduated in 1932 from Carbondale Community High School. She attended Washington University for two years. Mrs. McHale retired from her position as traffic manager for the Sara Lee Corporation. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Robyn McHale of Naples, Fla. , John and Gay McHale of DeSoto, Mo.; her stepdaughter, Marlene Pepe of Las Vegas; her granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica McHale, both of St. Louis; her grandson, Cory Pepe of Las Vegas; her great-grandson, Bailey Eversmeyer; her sister, Helen Hilton of Anna; and her brother, Ernest Fligor of Carbondale. The visitation will be from 9 a. m. until service time at 11 a. m. Saturday, September 18, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale. The Rev. Janice West will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are preferred and may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Sophia Mae Zimny

VALIER -- Sophia Mae Zimny passed away Sept. 14, 2004, at home. Services will be 11 a. m. today, Sept. 17, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation was Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Luke Hospice. Sophia was born May 16, 1907, in Wilmington, Del., the daughter of John and Josephine Dubonouski. Her first husband, Frank Mick, died in 1947. She later married Joe Zimny and together they owned and operated Zimny's Grocery in Valier until they retired. Sophia is survived by a son, Ronald Mick of Valier; two daughters, Gerry Mercer of Valier and Marsha Coady of Phoenix; daughter-in- law, Billie Zimny of Carbondale; brother, Stanley Dubonouski of Chicago; grandchildren, Frank Mercer and Melody of Valier, Kathy Mercer Smith and Donnie of Benton, Amy Mercer Prudent and John of Valier, Joseph Coady of Carbondale, Jeffery Coady of Massachusetts, Lisa Coady of Arizona, Michael Coady and Jenny of Ohio, Suzanne Coady and Jeff of Texas, Julie Shpik and Peter of Alabama, Kathryn Zimny of Missouri and Joseph Zimny and Linda of Shanghai, China; great-grandchildren, Josh Smith, Samuel and Jake Waters, Lucas and Jillian Prudent, Patrick Coady, Brandon and Karissa McKeown, Corinne and Conner Coady, and Jason, Alexandria and Cynthia Shpik. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Zimny, a son, Joseph Zimny, three sisters, Mary, Jenny and Genevieve, and one brother, John.
