Lester Havener

BENTON -- Lester Havener, 87, of Benton, died at 9:14 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 3 p. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at the Illiopolis Christian Church in Illiopolis, with the Rev. Dale Carson and Pastor Melissa Meers officiating. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Mechanicsburg. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 3 p. m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Illiopolis Disciples of Christ or to the Benton First Christian Disciples of Christ and will be accepted at the church. Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Havener was born on Dec. 3, 1916, in Christian County, the son of Homer and Mary Ellen (Hohenstein) Havener. He married the former Virginia Young and she survives. He was self-employed farmer and welder and was the former township supervisor and road commissioner of Illiopolis Township. He was a member of the Illiopolis Christian Church, Mount Auburn Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and Past Commander of the Illiopolis American Legion. Mr. Havener served as a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Havener of Benton; three children, Leslie Cox and husband, Courtney of Benton, Julia Havener of Benton and Joseph Havener of Illiopolis; seven grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and a sister, Kathleen Earles of Chatham. Mr. Havener was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Gladys Karstetter and Edna Meeker.

Sophia Mae Zimny

VALIER -- Sophia Mae Zimny passed away Sept. 14, 2004, at home. Services will be 11 a. m. Friday in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Luke Hospice. Sophia was born May 16, 1907, in Wilmington, Del., the daughter of John and Josephine Dubonouski. Her first husband, Frank Mick, died in 1947. She later married Joe Zimny and together they owned and operated Zimny's Grocery in Valier until they retired. Sophia is survived by a son, Ronald Mick of Valier; two daughters, Gerry Mercer of Valier and Marsha Coady of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter-in- law, Billie Zimny of Carbondale; brother, Stanley Dubonouski of Chicago; grandchildren, Frank Mercer and Melody of Valier, Kathy Mercer Smith and Donnie of Benton, Amy Mercer Prudent and John of Valier, Joseph Coady of Carbondale, Jeffery Coady of Massachusetts, Lisa Coady of Arizona, Michael Coady and Jenny of Ohio, Suzanne Coady and Jeff of Texas, Julie Spivik and Peter of Alabama, Kathryn Zimny of Missouri and Joseph Zimny and Linda of Shanghai, China; great- grandchildren, Josh Smith, Samuel and Jake Waters, Lucas and Jillian Prudent, Patrick, Brandon and Karissa Coady, Corinne and Conner Coady, Jason, Alexandria and Cynthia Spivik. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Zimny, a son, Joseph Zimny, three sisters, Mary, Jenny and Genevieve and one brother, John.

Leonard Burns

WEST FRANKFORT -- Leonard L. Burns, 79, of West Frankfort, passed away at 3:20 a. m., Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Leonard was born July 17, 1925, in West Frankfort, the son of Ben and Oledia (Eason) Burns. He married Rose Kirk on Nov. 3, 1947, and she survives. Besides his wife, Rose, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and John Reynolds and Linda and Warren Wright, all of West Frankfort; six grandchildren, John L. Reynolds Jr. of Rolla, Mo. , Kimberly and Brian Hunsaker of Carterville, Jason and Jill Reynolds of Mainesville, Ohio, Kyle Hanson of Evansville, Ind., Christine Reynolds of West Frankfort, and Karen and Tony Hughes of West Frankfort; three great-grandchildren, Bryson and Brooklyn Hunsaker of Carterville and Sean Reynolds of Mainesville, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Marcella Burns of West Frankfort; and one sister, Naomi Stilley of West Frankfort. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Burns served in the United States Navy on the USS Denver, proudly serving our nation in WWII. He worked for many years at Bonifield Trucking Company. He later worked at Consol Mine in McLeansboro until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Burns had many hobbies, including amateur photography, collecting and watching movies from the 1930s and 1940s, playing guitars, listening to country-western and gospel music, and gardening. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Genell Brookhouse officiating. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p. m. today at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home. military rites will be conducted by the American Legion of Orient and the VFW of West Frankfort.

Opal Gibbs

MACEDONIA -- Opal Mae Gibbs, 86, formerly of Macondia, died at 2:08 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with the Revs. Mark Lee and John Smith officiating. Burial will be in Glenview Gardens of Memory in McLeansboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

RED BUD -- Elsie T. Coop, 97, of Evansville passed away at 9:30 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Red Bud Nursing Home. Services will be at 10 a. m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Evansville, with the Rev. John J. Joyce officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Evansville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. Deanna Schott

JONESBORO -- Deanna Schott, 35, of Jonesboro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in Union County Hospital. She was born on Nov. 30, 1968, in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Leonard 'Buzz' and Phyllis (Campbell) Bixby. She married David G. Schott on Sept. 9, 1995, in Wolf Lake. Deanna graduated from Red Bud High School and then attended St. Louis Community College Meramec in St. Louis. She worked as a teacher's assistant at Jonesboro Grade School. She served as Girl Scout leader for Troop No. 129, was treasurer for Jonesboro Junior High Boosters and Union County Soccer league, served as a past PTO president at Jonesboro Elementary, and was active in the ballfield fund-raiser for the school. She was also a member of the A-J Huddle Club at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. There's a place inside the heart where love lives always . . . and where nothing beautiful can ever be forgotten. I've learned throughout the years nothing beautiful in this world is ever really lost. Those we cherish will always live on in memory and in our hearts. Survivors include her husband, David; her mother, Phyllis Bixby of Baldwin; three children, Justin, Jordan and Samantha Schott; three sisters, Angela and husband Delbert Knupp and their children, David and Nolan, all of Jonesboro, Lisa Figura and her children, Amber and Trisha, of Nashville, Ill. , and Laura Cozean and her children, Caleb and Myranda, of Red Bud; her father- and mother-in-law, Wm. R. and Frankie Schott of Cape Girardeau; one sister-in-law, Laurie Schott Webster, and her children, Chelsi and Shawna, of St. Louis; her maternal grandmother, Verna Campbell of Chester; her maternal great-grandmother, Iva Morgan of Chester; her paternal grandmother, Violet Derossett of Wolf Lake; and her aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father; one nephew, Jordan Figura; and her grandfather, Grampy Bixby. Services will be conducted at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Revs. David Eidson and John Boyd officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p. m. today and until the funeral hour on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Charlotte 'Lottie' Jackson Hood

MARION -- Charlotte 'Lottie' J. Hood was received into the arms of Jesus at 5:40 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at the age of 93. Lottie was born Oct. 31, 1910, to William Daniel and Charlotte (Harris Hathaway) Sinks. Her mother died while giving birth to her. Due to circumstances within the family, Nancy and Charlie Ruffling, an aunt and uncle who lived in Thompsonville, raised her until she was 8 years old. At that time her father remarried and Lottie joined her immediate family on their farm east of Johnston City. Lottie married William Walter Hood on Nov. 2, 1928, in Marion. Together they bought a farm just south of the present Marion High School. They also owned and operated Hood's Studio in Marion from 1952 until 1975. Lottie loved life and people and she was usually involved in a variety of activities with her church family at First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ in Marion. She also was actively involved at the Marion Senior Citizens Center and with the March of Dimes, helping them collect money. When she was able, Lottie loved to travel anytime someone would ask her to go along. She is survived by her daughter, Louise Couch of Marion; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Lottie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son. Arrangements for Charlotte 'Lottie' J. Hood have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral in Marion. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a. m. to 12 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at the funeral home. The funeral service will held at noon Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Rucker presiding. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. WEST FRANKFORT -- Ethel Gardner, 89, died at 11:55 a. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in Parkview Care Center in West Frankfort. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in Union Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Clifton officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Hazel Ruth Trigg

SIMPSON -- Hazel Ruth Trigg, 73, passed away unexpectedly at 10:48 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. Ruth suffered a heart attack earlier Sunday morning while attending services at the Glendale United Methodist Church. Mrs. Trigg was born April 7, 1931, in the Cedar Grove community in Pope County. She was the daughter of Edgar Bailey and Bertha Leola (Cox) Bailey. She was united in marriage to John Trigg on Dec. 25, 1952, at the Glendale United Methodist Church and he survives. Other survivors include a son, Ronald Trigg of Norris City; two daughters, Carol J. Semler and her husband, Brad of Barlow, Ky. , and Nancy J. Widick and her husband, John, of Champaign; four grandchildren, Justin Lynn, Jared Lynn, Jesse Widick and Timothy Widick; two step-grandchildren, Robbie Semler and Jimmy Semler; a sister, Juanita Hardin and her husband, Wayne, of Harrisburg; two brothers, Buel Lee Bailey and his wife, Doris, of Vienna and Rev. John Bailey of the Glendale community (Pope County); a sister-in-law, Wanda Bailey of Vienna; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, Laverne Bailey; a sister-in-law, Mildred Bailey; and a brother-in-law, Maurice Wells. Ruth was a 1949 graduate of the Pope County Community High School. Ruth was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and traveling. Ruth had visited many European countries while her husband, John, served in the military. Ruth was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Glendale United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Glendale United Methodist Church, with Revs. Dennis Fager, Jerry Wells and John Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Gilead Cemetery near Simpson. ANNA -- Ervin Karraker, 84, died at 2:46 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 11 a. m. Friday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna. Burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Charles 'Chuckie' Lindner

HIGHLAND -- Charles A. 'Chuckie' Lindner, 24, died at 5:10 p. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at home. Services will be at 10 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in Spengel- Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with the Rev. Leonard C. Laetsch officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p. m. Thursday. Burial will be in Cottom Cemetery in Denmark, Ill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. tonight and from 8 to 10 a. m. Thursday at Spengel-Boulander Funeral Home. Mr. Lindner worked in customer assistance at Schnuck's Grocery Store. He was a member of Local No. 881 of the United Food and Commercial Workers. He volunteered at the Highland Animal Shelter. He moved with his family to Highland in 1981 and graduated from Highland High School in 1999 with honors. He loved WWF Wrestling; enjoyed swimming and watching all sports. Mr. Lindner was born Nov. 17, 1979, in Lemoore, Calif. , to Charles Frank and Patsy Marie Haberman Lindner. They both survive. Other survivors include a sister, Renee (Robert) Stockert of Edwardsville, Ind.; grandparents, Arthur and Beulah (Draves) Haberman of Litchfield; three nieces, Ashleigh Stockert, Brittani Stockert and Harmonnie Stockert all of Edwardsville; special friends, Dana Huelsmann and Mary Jakel both of Highland; and many aunts, uncles cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Eola F. (Carter) Lindner; uncle and Godfather Willard 'Willie Griffin. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics Area 12, Region 2, or to the family.

Leona Treece Boyd

LICK CREEK -- Leona Treece Boyd, 98, of Lick Creek, died at 12:10 p. m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, in Jonesboro Healthcare Center. She was born Oct. 31, 1905, in Buncombe, the daughter of Willie and Ethel Manus Treece. She married Bon C. Boyd on Feb. 3, 1926 in Lick Creek. He preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1990. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Anna. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry L. and Margo Boyd of Anna; one daughter, Betty Peterson of Bradley; one daughter-in-law, Myrtie Boyd of Lick Creek; one half-sister, Vernita Elkins of Buncombe; nine grandchildren, Michael Boyd, Ronda Pearl, Chris Bridges, Gary Bullock, Melanie Bales, Beverly Stecher, Kent Boyd, Brent Boyd and Donald Wayne Boyd; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son, Curtis Laverne Boyd. Services for Mrs. Leona Treece Boyd will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Revs. Gene Hart and Andy Gillespie officiating. Interment will be in the Ebenezer Hall Cemetery. Patrick Kevin Hayes

JOHNSTON CITY -- Patrick Kevin 'Pat' Hayes, 49, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in Makanda as a result of a motorcyle accident. Pat was born Dec. 27, 1954, in Chicago, to Ralph Hayes and Cathy (O'Connell) Josten. He was employed by Walgreen's where he was an over-the-road truck driver. He was a member of the Herrin Elks. He was a Catholic. Survivors include his mother, Cathy Josten of Herrin; his father, Ralph and wife Patricia Hayes of Herrin; one sister, Marycolleen Hayes of Oak Lawn; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Kathie Hayes of Bolingbrook, Ralph and Terri Hayes of Oswego, and Sean and Sandra Hayes of Naperville; eight nieces and nephews, Casey and wife Connie Hayes of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tricia Hayes, and Crystal, Jodie, Stephanie, Nicholas, Noah, and Emma Hayes, all of Naperville; and one great-niece, Mackenzie Hayes of Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Susan Hayes. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, with Monsignor Ken Schaefer officiating. Roy W. Staton

PADUCAH -- Mr. Roy W. Staton, 85, of Paducah, formerly of New Columbia, died at 11 p. m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, with Revs. Jason Browning and Don Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Wednesday at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home, Metropolis. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southern Illinois Chapter, 620 E. Walnut St. Carbondale, IL 62901-3102. Mr. Staton was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Paducah. He was also a member of IBEW and Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He served in the US Navy from 1940-1953 serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He retired from SIPC. He is survived by one daughter, Catherine Ann Staton of Colorado Spring, Colo.; one son, Stephen Staton and wife, Judith Sullivan of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Jane Staton of Paducah and Mary Staton Oglesby of Lawrenceville; two brothers, Waldon and Edward Staton, both of New Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna (Martin) Staton; parents, Tom and Arbie (Sharpe) Staton; one sister, Alta Mae Staton and one infant sister.

MURPHYSBORO -- Marty Valco, 41, died at 6:58 a. m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in St. Joseph's Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Arrangements are incomplete at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin.

Dominic Riggio

DU QUOIN -- Dominic P. Riggio, 83, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7 a. m. , Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, in the Skilled Care Unit of Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Mr. Dominic P. Riggio was born in Du Quoin on Sept. 5, 1921, to Peter and Grace (nee Ventimiglia) Riggio and attended Du Quoin schools. In July 1946, Dominic married Ninfa Alongi in St. Louis, Miss. , and was married for 51 years. Mrs. Riggio passed away in 1997. In 1917, Dominic's father, Pete Riggio, opened the Pete Riggio and Sons Grocery Store that served hundreds of families throughout the area at its 348 N. Hickory St. location. After the death of his father, Dominic was a partner along with his brothers, Vincent J. and Vito T. Riggio, in the grocery business until its closing in June 1974. In 1933, Dominic's father opened the Pete Riggio and Sons Beer Distributorship that served a large territory in the southern half of the state. After the deaths of his brothers, Mr. Riggio continued to operate the business with his son, Pete Guy Riggio, until June 1997, when the business was purchased by the Bleyer family of Carbondale. From 1942 until 1945, Dominic trained at Camp Campbell, Ky., and Camp Barkeley, Texas, and proudly served his country during World War II in England, France and Germany as a radio operator with 152nd Signal Corps, advancing to the rank of sergeant by the time of his discharge in late 1945. The 152nd Signal Corps was part of the 12th Armored Division, known as the Hellcat Division. Mr. Riggio's division came in the 3rd Wave at Normandy, France, and the division, along with the 7th Army, spearheaded for Gen. George C. Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. Dominic was one of only two in the 152nd Signal Company to receive the Bronze Star for valor. He was also part of a liaison team that liberated three concentration camps, Auschwitz, Dachau and Mauthausen, and took part in the liberation of France. He earned the 'Thank You America Certificate' from the French government for his contribution to the liberation of France during World War II. He was also awarded the French Commemorative Medal of the 1939-1945 war from Brig. Gen. Arnous-Riviere, military attache for the French government, for having participated in the French Campaign of 1944. Dominic also earned a Purple Heart. Mr. Riggio was a life member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Du Quoin and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, Veterans of Foreign War, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge. He was presented with the Official Golden Age Eagle Award from the Eagles Lodge in September 2001. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Du Quoin. Mr. Riggio gave generously to his faith community Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Endowment fund. He contributed to many charitable causes as well, including Easter Seals, United Cerebral Palsy, the American Lung Association, Feed the Children Campaign, the March of Dimes, Girls and Boys Town, the American Heart Association, the Paralyzed American Veterans, the National World War II Memorial Fund, Muscular Dystrophy, and many of the charities in the community. Mr. Riggio leaves behind the many area residents whom he considered lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his dear wife, Ninfa, to whom he was married for 51 years; two sisters, Katie Fiantaco and Laura Brock; and two brothers, Vincent J. Riggio and Vito T. Riggio. He is survived by his son, Pete Guy Riggio (Milinda) of Du Quoin; his daughter, Grace Rosalie Riggio-Greenberg of Lisle-Naperville; his dear grandchildren, Spenser Garrett Greenberg and Shana Lia Greenberg of Lisle-Naperville and Brad Allan Riggio (Michelle) of Bethel Park, Penn.; his sisters-in-law, Betty Riggio and Dorothy Alongi of Du Quoin; his wife's brother, John R. Alongi (Betty) of Du Quoin; his nieces and nephews, Jacqueline Williams (Dale) and Joann Isom (William) of Du Quoin, Grace Huite (Edgar) of Foley, Ala. , Rosalie Alongi of St. Louis, Mo. , and Pete H. Riggio, Guy H. Alongi (Rose), Guy W. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Du Quoin and from 8 a. m. to 10:30 a. m. Saturday at the church. Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a. m. Saturday at the church. A Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Chalice Service will be at 6 p. m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin. military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin VFW and American Legion. Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin is in charge of arrangements. Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart Endowment Fund, Du Quoin Knights of Columbus Mentally Retarded Children's Fund, Du Quoin VFW Disabled Veteran's Fund, Du Quoin American Legion Disabled Veteran's Fund, Du Quoin Elks Crippled Children's Fund, and Du Quoin Eagles Annual Children's Christmas Party Fund. Muriel Jean Hollomon

BENTON -- Muriel Jean Hollomon, 92, of Benton, died at 3:20 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at home. Jean was born on Jan. 6, 1912, in Crossville. She was the daughter of Felix and Tessie Orr. She married William P. Hollomon on March 6, 1960, in Benton. He preceded her in death on March 6, 1996. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Doris Heinzman of Christopher and Dorothy Davis Henley of Benton; one niece, Evan Lynn and husband Bob Salmons of Huntingdon, Pa.; two nephews, Charles Dean and wife Neita Heinzman of St. Louis, and Thomas M. and wife Ruth Ann Davis of Benton; two great-nieces, Suzie and husband Ed LeBaube of St. Louis and Rebecca and Mark Nelson of Kenosha, Wis.; and four great-nephews, Mark and Rhonda Heinzman of St. Louis, Jeff and Nicole Davis of Carbondale, Matt T. and Robin Davis of Benton, and Bob and Julie Salmons of Des Plaines. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Edna Gosnell of Herrin and Alice Fern Mason of Benton. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a. m. today at Morton and Johnston Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. today in the funeral home, with burial to follow in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Benton.

Mary Bernice 'Bean' Rainey

CORA -- Mary Bernice 'Bean' Rainey of Farmington, Mo. , passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in the Parkland Hospital, at the age of 84 years. She was born on Sept. 24, 1920, in Cora, the daughter of the late Conness E. and Cora (Caruthers) Pike. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delbert 'Doc' Rainey, and by a nephew, James Russell Hurd. She was a member of the Crossroads First Church of God. Before her retirement, she had worked as a restaurateur and later as an orphanage caregiver for the Mooseheart Lodge. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by a sister, Kathlene Hurd of Belvidere; a niece, Carla (Mrs. Larry) Erickson of Belvidere; two great-nieces, Colleen (Mrs. John) Link and their son Brandon of Loves Park and Christa (Mrs. Justin) Erp of Burnsville, Minn.; and dear friends Eddie and Barbara Stacy, Sharon and Mike Mell, Carol and Cecil Bollinger, and Francis Thomure. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p. m. today at the Cozean Memorial Chapel. Visitation will resume at 7:30 a. m. Wednesday. Services will follow at 11 a. m. Wednesday in the Cozean Chapel, with the Rev. Herb Conley officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Chester. Memorials may be made to the Mary Bernice Rainey Memorial Fund at US Bank in Farmington or to the donor's choice.

Ralph Bierman

SPARTA -- Ralph H. Bierman, 79, died at 6:10 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, in the First United Methodist Church in Sparta, with the Rev. Tom Corum officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the church. Mr. Bierman owned and sold pianos at Bierman's Piano Shop. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served in the Navy in World War II. He was born April 4, 1925, in Sparta, to Albert Bierman and Lydia Louise Schultz. He married Mary Ruth Wheeler on Feb. 13, 1948, in Sparta. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth Wheeler of Sparta; two sons, Richard Bierman of Denver and David Bierman of North Carolina; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Esther Bosley

MARION -- Esther Bosley, 87, died at 1:20 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 in Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Paul's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 902 S. Monroe St. Marion, with Rev. Roger R. Holmes, church pastor officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the church.
