The Rev. Grady U. Sappington
MILLCREEK -- The Rev. Grady U. Sappington, 78, of Millcreek, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Union County Hospital. He was born on Jan. 30, 1926, in Floyd, Ark. , the son of John Weston and Sarah Elizabeth (Keith) Sappington. He married Ruby Newton on Jan. 29, 1958, in St. Louis. He worked as a television and electronics repair man. He was a member of the Jesus Name Pentecostal Mission Church. Mr. Sappington served in the U. S.
Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Sappington; one daughter, Esther Mae Holderbach of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Grady U. Sappington Jr. of Anna and Jesse Dean Sappington of Little Rock, Ark.; one stepdaughter, Naomi Z. D. Shannon of St. Louis; two stepsons, Marvin L. Lute Jr. of Wai Paku, Hawaii, and Daniel A. Lute of Rockford; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Delavina Ferrin of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; and one brother, Quentine Carl Sappington of Little Rock, Ark. Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

HERRIN -- Bill B. Lawson, 80, of Herrin, passed away at 12:55 p. m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Bill's choice of final disposition was to be cremated. His family will honor his wishes and will have a memorial service at 1 p. m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in New Barham Cemetery
in Marion, with the Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Family and friends who wish to attend Bill's memorial service are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is entrusted with Bill's memorial service arrangements. Bill was born in Herrin to John Thomas and Marie (Barham) Lawson on May 9, 1924. He was employed by the Bunny Bread Company and worked for 40 years until his retirement. Bill served our beloved country proudly during World War II. He was an avid golfer and a proud Herrin Tiger sports fan. Bill enjoyed the many friendships he developed over the years by drinking coffee with his pals at the Hardee's and McDonald's restaurants in Herrin. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Charles Patrick of Herrin; one grandson, John and wife Tracy Patrick of Marion; one great-grandson, Tyler Patrick of Herrin; three special friends, Joyce Calvert, who was the mother of his daughter, L. D. Starrick and Craig Baumgaurd, all of Herrin; and several loving nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom Lawson and L. P. Lawson; and one sister, Ruth Lawson. Bill will be dearly missed.

WEST FRANKFORT -- Gladys Brown, 92, of West Frankfort, went to be with the Lord at 6:57 p. m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. She was born on Oct. 11, 1911, in Central City, Ky. , to Lanna Gamblin and Eura (Cobb) Gamblin. She was married to James S. Brown, and he preceded her in death on June 2, 1990. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jack Cobb of Johnston City, Brenda and Charles Ksycki of DuBois, and Gloria and Rick Plasters of West Frankfort; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Janet Brown of West Frankfort and Jack and Phyllis Brown of Buckner; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; two sons, Billy James and Donald Ray Brown; and one sister, Nellie Gamblin. She was a Baptist. Mom was loved by her family and will be greatly missed. Private funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Brian Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery

Frank was born on Aug. 22, 1915, in Austin, Texas, to Jesse and Genevieve (Rogers) Olguin. He was a long shoreman with the Long Shoreman's Union Local No. 19. Mr. Olguin served in the U. S.
Army during World War II. He was a former member of the Moose and Elks lodges. Frank married Alice Weir on June 9, 1945, in Seattle, and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1998. He is survived by one son, Ralph Olguin of Girard; five grandchildren, Melody Olguin of Murphysboro, Frank Olguin of Pana, Robert Olguin of Farmersville, Anita Wilson and her husband Gary of Ramsey, and Sherri White and her husband Chad White of Taylorville; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia Galarza and Louise Guajardo, both of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

MURPHYSBORO -- Louis R. 'Louie' Russell, 85, of Murphysboro, passed away at 10:17 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, in Pettett Funeral Home, with John L. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, with military services conducted by the American Legion Post 127, VFW posts 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County DAV Chapter 69. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. today and until the hour of services on Sunday at the funeral home. Louie was born on June 17, 1919, in Murphysboro, to James Franklin Russell and Hortense (Leach) Russell. He was a World War II
Army veteran. Mr. Russell apprenticed at his father's barber shop, Russell's Barber Shop, which was passed to his brother, Odell, and himself, and they operated it together. He later went to work for the secretary of state for 10 years and retired as a license examiner. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 127, a past commander for the 25th District of the American Legion and a past commander for the 5th Division of the American Legion. Louie was involved in the creation of the Apple Festival in Murphysboro. He is survived by one son, Louis Robin Russell and Karen Russell of Columbus, Ind. He married Sarah E. Sullivan of Murphysboro in 1962, and they had two children, Brian Louis Russell and wife Carolyn Russell of Garland, Texas, and Amy Lianne Reeves and husband John W. Reeves Jr. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Regan and Josh Littrell and Andrew and Emily Russell, all of Columbus, Alexandria N. Reeves of Murphysboro, and Ethan C. and Jacob A. Russell, both of Garland; three great-grandchildren, Carson L. Littrell, Wil R. Littrell and Charles A. Russell, all of Columbus; one brother, William E. Russell of Peoria; three brothers-in-law, Leon Sullivan of Burfordville, Mo., Clifford and wife Shirley Sullivan of Cape Girardeau, and John L. and wife Barbara Sullivan of El Cajon, Calif.; an especially close nephew, William 'Tuffy' Schmellmyer of Murphysboro; and other nephews, nieces and cousins, who remember him well. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, a special niece and his parents.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, cooking, gardening and visiting with her friends. She was born on Nov. 17, 1924, in Parrish, to Ransom Price Sr. and Glenna (Launus) Price. She married Thomas Perry Hart Jr. on Nov. 21, 1942, in Cape Girardeau. He died on Feb. 1 ,1992. Survivors include two sons, Mark Hart and wife Becky of Kokomo, Ind. and Keith Hart and wife June of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Darren Hart and wife Laura, David Hart and wife Ivory both of Fort Wayne, Fla. , Michelle Asay and husband Kevin of Lafayette, Ind. , Olivia Hart of Houston, Paul Hart of Mount Vernon; great-grandchildren, Haven Hart, Havannah Hart and Ethan Asay; and several nieces and nephews. in Marion. Mr. Krantz was born in Marion to John and Reta Bradley Krantz on Sept. 3, 1921. He was married to Irene Sadaj Krantz; she died in 2001. Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Myers, Johnston City; one granddaughter, Manissa and Jimmy Lampman of Chicago; two great-grandsons, Robert and Zachary Lampman of Chicago; one brother, Edward Krantz, West Frankfort and Lenard Krantz, Missouri; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Krantz is preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, Loren, Floyd, and Richard Krantz; three sisters, Lola Ray, Loren Vansaghi, and Eileen Winstead; three sons, Howard, William Earl and John Howard Krantz; and one great-grandson, Christopher Lampman. He was a veteran of the Navy and a member of the VFW in West Frankfort. He was a retired welder from the Coal Mines. Memorials can be made directly to the VA Medical Center in Marion.

Katherine was born on Oct. 27, 1928, in Johnston City, the daughter of Joe and Lizzie (Hughes) Trapani. She married Ralph 'Peppy' Kowalis on June 14, 1952, in Johnston City, he survives. Katherine was a member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City, where she was a member of the choir. She was a teacher for more than 32 years and worked in the family grocery store all of her life. She is survived by one son, Philip Kowalis and wife Lisa of Johnston City; two grandchildren, Lauren and Allyssa Mary-Joe; a sister-in-law, Bettye Trapani of Johnston City; a niece, Elizabeth Carter and husband Leonard of Freeport; great-nieces and nephews, Cassie, Katrina, and Mathew Carter, and Brittani and Heather Trapani; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Pat Francescon and husband Don of St. Louis, Evelyn Goralski and husband Ray of Chicago, Catherine Hope and husband Bill of Johnston City, and Mike Kowalis and wife Linda of Olney. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Philip Trapani; and one nephew, Joe David Trapani. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and had many dear friends. She was loved by all who knew her.

She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Du Quoin, to William Alonzo Scott and Fannie Story. She married Charles Richard Reiger, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 2001. She is survived by one sister, Sphrona Story of Sesser, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

OLMSTED -- Selma S. Brown, 98, of Olmsted passed away at 4 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Daystar Care Center, Cairo. Services will be held at 2 p. m. , Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Olmsted, with the Rev. Carl Miller officiating. Interment will be held in Green Lawn Cemetery, Villa Ridge. Selma was born Feb. 23, 1906, in St. Louis, to William and Louise (Luecke) Temke. She married Charles Arden Brown on Jan. 29, 1924 in Mound City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1968. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Brown; two brothers, William Temke and Fred Temke; two sisters, Edith Duffy and Lydia Poppe; two sons-in-law, C. Robert Hall and Billy Droge; and one granddaughter, Donna Coonrod. Survivors include two daughters, Sue Hall of Carbondale and Helen Droge of Marion; seven grandchildren, Candace Smith of Carbondale, Melanie Hall of Wolf Lake, Billy Ray Droge of Mounds, James Droge of Murphysboro, Mike Droge of Marion, Cathy Frey of Marion and Penny Phillips of Marion; nine great-grandchildren, Samantha, Rebecca and Clayton Smith, Kelly Clark, Tracy and Cassie Stricker, Madison Pitts, Stacy Thomas, and William David Droge; and a dear friend, Eva Sheffer. Selma was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Olmsted. She was the oldest living member of the church. Although Selma's stay at the Daystar Care Center was only for a brief time, the family wishes to convey their heartfelt gratitude for the loving care extended to Selma especially by the Blue Wing. Flo Lacene (Treece) Nevins
CARBONDALE -- Flo Lacene (Treece) Nevins passed away Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in Christus St. Elizabeth at the age of 85. Born in Carbondale on Aug. 30, 1919, Mrs. Nevins was the owner of Flo's Cafe, adjacent to the Carbondale train depot during the late 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Nevins is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Neal and Linda Campbell; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bill Joe Treece, all of whom live in Texas. Her father, William Treece; her mother, Maggie Braswell; and her brother, Max Treece, preceded her in death.

Rose was born on Sept. 3, 1914, in Sesser, to Martin and Anna Kokal Saiz. She married Raymond Watson, and he died June 19, 1961. Survivors include a brother, Stanley Saiz of Springfield and two sisters, Anna Dralser of New York and Josephine Moschino of Oak Lawn. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Martin and Lawrence.

Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Kay Nieds of Marion; his children and their spouses, Cynthia M. and Jeff Birkmeier of Lima, Ohio, Carin M. and Jim Jelinek of Carol Stream, Cathy M. and Larry Olbrantz of New Richmond, Wis. , Walter G. Jr. and Peggy Nieds of Marion, Cheryl M. Schwarz of Lake Zurich, Warren G. and Joan Nieds of Merrill, Wis. , Christine M. and Ken Grooms of Lake Zurich, and Ward G. and Lynn Nieds of Elgin; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Dr. Nieds graduated from Loyola University School of Dentistry and took postgraduate studies at the University of Illinois. He was a founding and charter member of the American Academy of Dental Electrosurgery; a member of the American Equilibration Society, the American Dental Society, the Illinois Dental Society and the Chicago Dental Society; and past president of the Illinois Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He was an international lecturer, an avid golfer, a boater, an amateur gardener and an enthusiastic pruner. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
