MARION -- Donald J. Richey, 75, of Marion, passed away at Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at home with his family. Donald was born on Sept. 4, 1929, in Crab Orchard, to Milo and Fannie (Turner) Richey. He played basketball for the Crab Orchard Trojans in high school. He married Barbara L. Guined on Nov. 1, 1952, in Detroit. She survives in Marion. Mr. Richey was a veteran of the
Korean War and served in the U. S. Air Force as a staff sergeant of the 661st Air Squadron. He played on the Air Force baseball team and a little semi-pro ball after his discharge. He retired from Easton Corp. (formerly Vickers) as senior engineer in robotic testing and hydraulics. He attended Center Baptist Church in Crab Orchard. He was a former member of the Fluid Power Engineers Society and the Troy-Clawson Elks Lodge in Troy, Mich. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing 
and bowling. Survivors include his wife- Barbara Richey of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Janis and John Kyle of Troy, Mich.; daughter, Nancy Suter and special friend, Charles 'Bud' Baker of Clawson, Mich.; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jeff Stone of Linden, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Kyle and fiance Joseph Lang, Christen Kyle, Jacqueline Kyle, Michael, Jillian and Matthew Suter, Laura and Jacob Stone; brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Ursula Richey of Marion; sister, Nell Hohlt of Portland, Ore.; sister, Margie Miller of Alton; sister, Jo Barger of Marion. His parents, one grandson; Bradley Stone, two brothers; Warren and Wallace Richey and two brothers-in-law preceded him in death; Jerry Miller and John Barger. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Sam White officiating. Burial will follow in Coal Bank Cemetery. CHESTER -- Roman S. Klein, 92, passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at St. Ann's Healthcare Center in Chester. Roman was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester. He was a retried sheet metal worker. He was born on Nov. 27, 1911, in Walsh, the son of Valentin and Mabel (Woolford) Klein. He married Dorothy M. Milligan on Nov. 24, 1932, and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Delbert Klein and wife Betty of Chester, three daughters, Ramona Young and husband Roger of Lake of Egypt, Mary Ann Wilson and husband Jim of DeSoto, Mo. and Nancy White and husband George of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Favier of Red Bud. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Tom Klein, two brothers and two sisters. Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester, with Father Eugene Wocjik officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery

American Legion Post No. 480 in Steeleville. He was an avid camper, fisherman and woodworker. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. He was born Friday, April 4, 1941, in Sparta, to Roscoe McSmith and Edna M. (Thompson) McSmith. He married Judith K. Bass Nov. 30, 1963, at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Stan Buchheit of Chester; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carla McSmith of Steeleville; four grandchildren, Ashley and Brandon Buchheir, Alli Bierman and Rayme McSmith; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul Dean and Yoko McSmith of Oklahoma City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Doria and Richard Cavalier of Sparta and Pat and Frank Cavalier of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Pat McSmith of St. Pete Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one infant sister, two step brothers and one step sister.

ANNA -- Larry Chamness, 58, of Anna, passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in the Union County Hospital, as a result of an accident. He was born on Oct. 1, 1946, in Anna, the son of Frank and Eva (Kinder) Chamness. Larry was a retired iron worker at Local No. 782. He was a life member of the Anna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3455 and a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna. He enjoyed fishing,
hunting, gardening and watching his nephews play football. He served in the U. S. Marines during the Vietnam era. He is survived by three brothers and one sister-in-law, Fred and Norma Chamness of Davenport, Fla. , and Robert 'Bob' Chamness and Frank 'Doc' Chamness, both of Anna; his special friends, Linda Williams and son Donnie Hileman and Gwen Kelley and son, Braxton; four nephews and their spouses, Mike and Teresa Chamness of St. Cloud, Fla. , Tony and Emily Chamness of Memphis, Tenn. , and Timmy and Cindy Chamness and Matt and Traci Chamness, all of Anna; four nieces and their spouses, Beverly and Rick Tweedy and Debbie and Robin Dillon, all of Anna, Alice and David Ury of Jonesboro, and Cathy and Steve Stearns of Anna; many great-nieces and -nephews; one great-great-niece; and many other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, Mark Chamness; one great-niece, Nikki; and two sisters-in-law, Pat and Gloria. Services will be conducted at 1 p. m. CARTERVILLE -- Florence Wilson Felts, 87, of Roswell, Ga. , formerly of Carterville, died Oct. 2, 2004. She was a resident of Carterville for 24 years. She was a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine and Amaranth. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Carterville where she taught high school Sunday school. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ross Felts, in 2001. She survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Karrol) Ward of Roswell, Ga. , and Mr. and Mrs. Ron (Barbara) Finley of Easley, S. C.; grandchildren, Jeff and Stephanie Finley, Jennifer and Andrew Brett, Steve and Cathy Ward, Doug and Tana Ward, Kara and Gary Chagnon, and Randy and Barbara Ward; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Kay Zimnoch Sherman
CARBONDALE -- Kay Zimnoch Sherman passed away at 2:25 p. m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Carbondale Nursing and Rehab Center, after a relatively short battle against cancer. She died a few days before her 70th birthday. Born Oct. 3, 1934, in New York City, Kay spent her early years there, but in 1947 she traveled to the far east with her family. There she completed her education at The American School in Manilla, Phillipines, and King George V School in Hong Kong. A highly talented and gifted individual, she put the honors and distinction gained at school to good use and began a 15-year international career in public relations and journalism. One of the highlights of her career was in 1965 in London, England, when she won the prestigious Gwynneth Jenkins Trophy and was nominated for the Outstanding Public Relations Woman of the Year by the Institute of Public Relations. In 1969, following the untimely death in England of her second husband, Pulitzer Prize-winner Eugene Sherman of the LA Times, Kay decided to return to the United States. After visiting relatives in New Jersey, she settled in Mattoon, where she also gained an English tutoring qualification at Lakeland College. Ultimately, she put her roots down in Carbondale some 20 years ago and used her training and considerable linguistic talents tutoring American and foreign students in the evenings and on weekends. Kay never remarried and had no children of her own. However, her extended family and friends range across America, from Texas in the west to Louisiana in the south to Baltimore in the east, and across the seas to England and on to Australia. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her second husband, Eugene Sherman. She is survived by her sister, Elaine Newman of London; a nephew, Martin Newman of Tonbridge, England; an uncle, John Mackenzie of Plano, Texas; and a niece, Alexander Schwarz, great-niece, Phoenix Schwarz, and great-nephew, Zavier Schwarz, all of Sydney, Australia. There will be no service. After cremation, her ashes will be transported to England for interment in the family plot with Kay's mother in Chichester, England. Anyone wishing to do so may make a donation to a registered charity or cancer research via an organization of their choosing. She will be sorely missed by us all -- wherever we are.

WEST FRANKFORT -- Dorothy M. Patton, 85, of West Frankfort, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at home. She was born on Oct. 30, 1918, in West Frankfort, to T. O. Sloan and Blanche (Morris) Sloan. She was married to Roy E. Patton, who preceded her in death on May 21, 1988. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jayne and John Border of Benton and Peggy and Cris Trapani of Herrin. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Leigh and husband Gerald Walen, Kathleen and husband Matt Dial, Kristine and husband Scott Cordts, Roy E. Mize, Maria Trapani, Angelina Trapani, Cristina Trapani, Cathy and husband Chris Terry, and Connie Johnson; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas O. Sloane of Oakland, Calif. , and Richard Sloan of Bakersfield, Calif.; and one sister, Mary Jane Ford of Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Dorothy was a member of the Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years, a former church treasurer, and on the parsonage building committee. She was a past president of the UMWA Hospital Auxiliary, the first coordinator of Meals on Wheels, and a member of the Four Mile Home Extension. She was also very active in several bridge clubs. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, in the Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brett Beasley officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. Monday at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort and after noon Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the Second Baptist Church Building Fund and will be accepted at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home.
