Dr. Joan Ferrell

RALEIGH -- After a long battle with cancer, Dr. Joan Ferrell, of Raleigh, died at home in the arms of her husband and surrounded by her family. Joan was born on Jan. 19, 1941, in West Frankfort, to John and Dorothy (McCloud) Sinks. She married Donald V. Ferrell on June 6, 1969. Dr. Joan Ferrell was an English/French instructor at Southeastern Illinois College for 31 years until she retired in 2002. Joan received her doctorate in English from SIUC in 1998, after having obtained dual master's degrees in English and French. Her many accomplishments include the 2002 State of Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year, Southeastern Illinois College's Outstanding Faculty Member and recipient of Loren P. and Velma Dallas award in 2002, the NISOD Medal of Excellence and past president of Southeastern Illinois College Education Association. Joan was Southeastern's ICISP representative, ICISP's statewide faculty/administration international exchange coordinator and coordinator of international education and international trips. Joan had the opportunity to travel extensively and she wanted her students to understand, speak and experience what she had learned through international travel. Joan was the moving force that resulted in SIC's first men's golf team, which she coached. She acted in and directed numerous plays at SIC, culminating in what some would describe as a smashing success, 'A Christmas Carol,' performed in December 2002. She edited and published SIC's literary magazine, 'Across These Hills,' for several years, both the college and high school editions. Joan's favorite pastimes were golfing , reading, gourmet cooking, playing the piano and playing bridge. She is survived by her husband, Donald Ferrell; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Steven Brett Fricks and Jonathan Patrick Sr. and Juanita Fricks, all of Raleigh; two adorable grandsons, Jonathan and Jordan; her mother, Dorothy Fricks of Jonesboro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Jimmy Watkins and Lana and Gary Watkins, all of Jonesboro; one brother, Robert Fricks of Jonesboro; seven nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and -nephews; her aunts, uncles and cousins; and a host of wonderful friends. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, with services at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. Interment will be at Jonesboro Cemetery in Jonesboro following the service. Contributions can be made to the Dr. Joan Ferrell Memorial Scholarship at SIC or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Betty Blechle

CHESTER -- Betty J. Blechle, 80, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester, with Father Eugene Wojcik officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at Schroeder-McClure Funeral Chapel in Chester. Then there will be a procession to the church. Memorials may be made to Masses at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chester or St. Ann's Healthcare Center.

Rita R. Bretscher

CARBONDALE -- Rita R. Bretscher, 89, died at 1:28 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Mrs. Bretscher was born on July 13, 1915, in Springfield, to F. R. and Dell (Fairles) Jordan. She married Carl E. Bretscher on Sept. 12, 1942, in Springfield. He survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Bretscher was a graduate of Milwaukee Downer College, which is a part of Lawrence University, and she also graduated from Oglala Lakota College. She had taught art in the Springfield grade and high schools until her retirement. She had obtained her pilot's license. Mrs. Bretscher received an appreciation award for her work with the VFW. Services will be at 9 a. m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Kim Magwire officiating. Burial will be at 3 p. m. Tuesday in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, where she was a member.

Thomas 'Tom' McClanahan

MARION -- Thomas 'Tom' McClanahan, 96, died at 2:55 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in Heritage Manor in Bloomington, where he had resided the last four months. Tom was born on April 6, 1908, in Marion, the son of John and Anna Perry McClanahan. He spent his life in Marion and Chicago where he was employed for many years. Tom enjoyed writing poetry and has had several poems published. He was also an avid Cubs fan for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline (Gilley) McClanahan; an infant son, his parents; one brother, John Franklin Jr.; and two sisters, Kate and Beulah. Survivors include one sister, Martha; two nieces, Marla and Jeannie; two great-nieces and one great-nephew; many members of his wife's family; and many good friends. Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Donald Fisher of Grantsburg officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a. m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Helen M. (Odom) Campbell

CAMBRIA -- Helen M. (Odom) Campbell, 84, a resident of Miamisburg, Ohio, and formerly of Illinois, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Heartland of Oakridge Nursing Home in Miamisburg. Helen was born on Dec. 7, 1919, in Cambria, to the late Ben B. and Ethel A. (McCormack) Odom. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin L. Campbell, on Jan. 15, 2004. She is survived by one son, Allen R. Campbell of West Carrollton, Ohio; two grandsons, Bryan and wife Renee Campbell of Miamisburg and Devin and wife Gisel Campbell of West Carrollton; two great-grandsons, Clark and Logan Campbell; two brothers-in-law, M. Lester Campbell of Illinois and Delbert L. and wife Nellie Campbell of Coulterville; two sisters-in-law, Pearl and husband Don Lucy of Delta, Colo. , and Lois D. and husband Roy McConkey of Chester. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Gebhart-Schmidt-Parramore Funeral Home, located at 508 E. Linden Ave. in Miamisburg, with Pastor Rich McKinley officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Hazel Thomas Sanders

BENTON -- Hazel Thomas Sanders, 86, of Benton, died at 9 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. She was born in Benton on Aug. 27, 1918, the daughter of Louis and Gertrude (Reed) Vaughn. In October 1933, Hazel married Frank Thomas, who preceded her in death. She then married Lee Holman, who also preceded her in death, and Russell Sanders, who also preceded her in death. Hazel is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Terry L. and wife Mary Lou of Benton and Val Thomas of Arlee, Mont.; 13 grandchildren, Dean, Terry, Monte, Darren and Kevin Thomas, Dawn Swinney, April Zimmer, Adam and Aaron Thomas, Tera Keller and Lynne Stiebel; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one son, Gary L. Thomas; one daughter, Glenda Stiebel; one brother, Thomas Vaughn; and two half-brothers, Luther and Cletis Corey. Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. The Morton and Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Webb

VIENNA -- Ralph Webb, 67, died at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday at the Community of Christ (Webb) Church near Tunnel Hill, with High Priest Glenn Webb officiating. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery near Tunnel Hill. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. today at Bailey Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the church. Celina Fischer

CARRIER MILLS -- Celina E. Fischer, 91, died at 8:30 a. m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Fountain Nursing Home in Marion. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with the Rev. Richard G. Mohr officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Calif. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Blue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Blair

WEST FRANKFORT -- Mary Katheryn (Green) 'Kat' Blair, 59, of West Frankfort, died at 1:42 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday at the Parker-Reed Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jeffery Wyant

WEST FRANKFORT -- Jeffery David Wyant, 25, died at 5:45 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Benton. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. W. B. Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home.

Robert Ratcliff

HARRISBURG -- Robert William Ratcliff, 90, died at 7:42 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Reed Funeral Chapel. Final arrangements will be handled at a later date by Gatling's Chapel in Chicago.

Gary Potocki

MARION -- Gary Potocki, 67, of Marion, formerly of Royalton, died at 12:50 p. m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in the Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort. Arrangements are pending at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton.

Don Williams

CARBONDALE -- Don A. Williams, 92, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004. Arrangements are pending at the Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Flossie Kraus

CENTRALIA -- Flossie F. Kraus, 100, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at home. Arrangements are pending at Styninger-Pacey Funeral Home in Centralia.

Marcella Wiseman

GODFREY -- Marcella Hope Wiseman, 78, of Godfrey, formerly Raleigh, died at 3:21 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004. Services will be at noon Wedneday, Oct. 20, at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, with the Rev. Bill Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to noon at Sloan Funeral Home. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to BIC Hospice.

Beatrice Baker

GALATIA -- Beatrice Baker, 62, Galatia, died at 4:20 p. m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at home. Her body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held later. Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Browning

WEST FRANKFORT -- Frank L. Browning, 91, died at 5:45 a. m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Frankfort Care Center. Arrangements are incomplete at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

Ruth Donelson

ROYALTON -- Ruth Donelson, 80, Royalton, died at 5:30 a. m. , Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Ruth was born on April 14, 1924, in Baltimore, to Joe and Lilly (Maxwell) Moody. She married Layman Eugene 'Bud' Donelson on Jan. 30, 1959, in Dearborn, Mich. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2001. She is survived by a son, John Edward Kirchoff of Royalton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Phillip Roberts of Woodbury, Tenn. , and Sharon and Arthur Wroblewski of South Gate, Mich. and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her parents, three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Donelson was a member of the First Baptist Church in Royalton and a homemaker. Services for Mrs. Donelson will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton, with Brother Jim Ebbs officiating. Burial will be in Miners Cemetery east of Royalton. Visiting hours are from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home.

Kenneth C. 'KC' Behnke

HARRISBURG -- Kenneth C. 'KC' Behnke, 60, of Harrisburg, passed away at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in Harrisburg Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 11, 1944, in Eldorado, the son of the late Kenneth L. Behnke and Velma (Owens) Behnke. He was married to the former Sharon O'Neal in Harrisburg on Dec. 26, 1965. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg, where he served on various committees including the Board of Trustees, youth leader and usher for many years. He was a member of the Raleigh Masonic Lodge and the Raleigh Water Board. He retired from Peabody Coal Co. and farmed livestock after his retirement. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps. Surviving besides his wife are three children, Bryce, Blake (Katie) and Brooke Behnke all of Harrisburg. Also surviving besides his mother are sisters and brothers, Donna (Jack) Lane of Eldorado, Bob (Sharon) Behnke of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. , Trudy Etienne of Eldorado and Thom (Sharon) Behnke of Carmi; granddaughters, Elle and Gracie Behnke; and mother and father-in-law, Dugan and Clesta O'Neal of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Peggy (Harold) Jobes of Edmond, Okla. , and Fred (Donna) O'Neal of St. Louis. Also several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church of Harrisburg, with the Rev. Paul Widicus officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p. m. today at the J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg.

BENTON -- Cyril Eugene Bowlin, 56, died at 2:15 p. m Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton.

William 'Bill' Muir

SESSER -- Surrounded by his family, Willliam A. 'Bill' Muir, 87, of Sesser, entered into eternal rest at 2:15 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Mr. Muir was born in Sesser on Aug. 1, 1917, the son of Harrison and Nettie (Walls) Muir. He married Geraldine Shepard on Oct. 21, 1939, in Morganfield, Ky. , and she preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 2000. Survivors include four children, Mary Ann Baker and husband Howard of Morris, Ala.; Linda Howell and husband Gary of Sesser; Billy Muir and wife Roberta of Benton; and Jim Muir and wife Lisa Kay of Sesser. Mr. Muir is also survived by eight grandchildren, Col. Howard B. Baker, stationed in Okinawa; Mary Brazier of Mount Olive, Ala.; Bruce Baker of Gardendale, Ala.; Jamey VanZandt of Mount Vernon; Lyndsay Muir of Carbondale; Mackenzie Muir of Highridge, Mo.; and Caleb and Bailey Muir, both of Benton, and seven step-grandchildren, Becky Przygoda of Pinckneyville; Frank Leffner of Ashley; Josh Conner of Carbondale; Ginger Conner of Sesser; Chuck Brewer and Goldie O'Connor, both of Meza, Ariz.; and Michelle Brewer of Brentwood, Tenn. He is also survived by one brother, Lester Muir and wife Helen of Racine, Wis. , and by 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clyde Muir; and two sisters, Helen and Hazel Muir. Mr. Muir worked for more than 40 years as an underground coal miner, last working at Old Ben Mine 21 near Sesser, where he worked for 25 years before retiring in 1983. He also worked at Old Ben mines in Valier, Buckner and Coello. He was a 40-year member of the United Mine Workers and served as an official for UMW Local Union 1124, where he was a member of the mine committee and a pit committeeman. Mr. Muir also served on the school board at Sesser Unit School District and was a 50-year member of the Sesser Church of God, where he was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. Mr. Muir loved to work in his yard, was an avid walker; and, most importantly, was a pillar to his family. His work ethic was unmatched in his children's eyes and his strength, character and belief in God was evident until the very last moment of his life. Services will be held at 2 p. m. today in Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with the Rev. Tim Melvin officiating. His son, Jim Muir, and his grandson, Jamey VanZandt, will offer eulogies during the memorial service. Friends may call from 7 a. m. to 2 p. m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Muir asked prior to his death that memorial contributions be made to the Maple Hill Cemetery Fund or the Sesser Church of God. Donations will be accepted at the funeral home.

WEST FRANKFORT -- Jeff Wyant, 25, died at 5:45 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, in Benton. Arrangements are incomplete at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

R. Leslie 'Jim' Finn

WEST FRANKFORT -- R. Leslie 'Jim' Finn, 80, of West Frankfort, passed away at 7:32 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. He was born on Nov. 19, 1923, in West Frankfort, to Revell W. Finn and Bertha (Menees) Finn. He married Wanda (Furlong) Finn on June 7, 1947, in West Frankfort, and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Linda Finn of South Bend, Ind.; a granddaughter, Chloe Kaitlin Finn of South Bend, Ind.; brother, Robert and wife Joan Finn of West Frankfort; three nieces, Debrorah and husband Doug Cordts, of West Frankfort, Penny and husband Paul Mueller of Springfield, and Mary and husband Gary Poole of Benton; one nephew, Bob J. and wife Bennie Finn of Carterville; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in West Frankfort. He served in the U. S. Navy Air Corps during World War II. He was also a member of the West Frankfort Masonic Lodge No. 567 and the United Mine Workers of America. He had formerly worked at Old Ben Mine No. 15 and Classic Coal near Pittsburg and had also worked at Olins. Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Minister Gene Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. today at Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Masonic rites will be conducted on today at 7 p. m. at the funeral home by Lodge No. 567. military rites will be conducted by the American Legion of Orient and the VFW of West Frankfort. Memorial contributions can be made to The American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home.

RALEIGH -- Joan Ferrell, 63, died at 1:53 a. m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2004, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado.

Crystal Morrison

GOREVILLE -- Crystal Morrison, 54, died at 11:20 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in St. Louis University Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at Blue Funeral Home in Goreville.
