EQUALITY -- Michael A. 'Mike' Hopson, 60, died at 9:30 p. m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in Equality Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Leroy Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery
in Equality. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Hopson was an electrician. He was a member of Herod Springs Baptist Church and Equality Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran, having served in the Navy. He was born on April 9, 1944, in Texas, to Cecil 'Red' Hopson and Maxine Creal. He married Bonnie Voorhees on Feb. 11, 1984. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Hopson of Equality; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Brian and Sueann O'Guinn of Chico, Calif. , Kevin and Launa O'Guinn of Neoga, and Kim Craig of Effingham; and 10 grandchildren, Mathew, Richard, Tyler, Keri, Derek, Kelly, Tiffany and Kevin Michael O'Guinn, Phillip Kercheval, and Benjamin Craig. He was preceded in death by his parents and one half-sister, Della Jane Field.
Judith 'Judy' Barrett
ELKVILLE -- Judith 'Judy' Yolanda Barrett, 78, of Sun City Grand, Ariz. , formerly of Elkville, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at home. Judy was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian Church. She was a Du Quoin High School graduate. She was born on March 10, 1926, in Winkel, the daughter of Sherman and Ruth (Lefler) Heape. She married William 'Bill' Barrett in 1945 in Du Quoin, and he survives. She is survived by her husband of Sun City Grand; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Jenny Barrett of Hudson Valley, N. Y.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary and Carl Porter of Du Quoin and Audrey Groom of Osage, Okla.; one brother, Abraham Kimmel Heape of San Francisco; five grandchildren, Nichole Parsons, Noel, Natalie and Nevan Barrett, and Ruosi Qi; and one great-grandchild, Ashten Parsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 1 p. m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Brother Gary Pruitt officiating. Wesley Cole
DU QUOIN -- Wesley Cole, 71, of Du Quoin, passed away at 3:50 a. m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Wesley had worked as a lineman for Illinois Power for 42 years. He was a Protestant. He was a member of IBEW Local 702, and he had owned Cole Cycle Center from 1970 until 1974. He was born on Jan. 7, 1933, in Sparta, the son of Wesley Sr. and Ruth (Mann) Cole. He married Catherine Balheimer on Oct. 7, 1950, in Sparta, and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; six children and their spouses, Sharon Snustad of Du Quoin, John Wesley and Mildred Cole of North Dakota, Dennis and Marsha Cole, Diana Young, and Donald and Susie Cole, all of Du Quoin, and Shane Matthew Cole of Nashville; three sisters, Geraldine Gardner of Percy, Patsy Jones of Coulterville and Virginia Owen of Chester; and 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 10 a. m. Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. William Eugene Gilliam
DU QUOIN -- William Eugene Gilliam, 63, of Royalton, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away at 9 p. m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at home. Bill was a heavy equipment operator for the Consol Coal Company. He was a member of Christian Fellowship Church in Du Quoin. He was a U. S. Navy veteran. He was born on Sept. 12, 1941, in Du Quoin, the son of William H. and Olive Louise (Pierce) Gilliam. He married Deloris Strouse on Dec. 24, 1962, in Ridgway, and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Royalton; one daughter, Melissa Knight of Valier; one son, Tyler H. Gilliam of Minnesota City, Minn.; one grandson, David Gilliam of Royalton; one brother, Richard Gilliam of Creal Springs; and two sisters, Janet Mydler of Tamaroa and Sherrie Dunn of Du Quoin. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 2 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with Brother Percy Pavloff officiating. Edward A. Farrar
CARBONDALE -- Edward A. Farrar, 71, of Carbondale, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born on Jan. 23, 1933, in Wood River, Mo. , son of Edward and Berdia (Vanzante) Farrar. He married Pauline Starling on Dec. 8, 1952, in Jonesboro. He owned and operated Ed's Standard Service Station for many years and then was a salesman for Jim Pearl and Vie Keoing auto dealerships. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church in Paducah. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; one son, Greg of Benton; two grandchildren, Andrea and Jerrica Farrar of Murphysboro; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frances L. Gibson and Margaret Rendleman. Services will be conducted at noon Thursday, Dec. 23, at the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Encil Edmonds officiating. Interment will be in Cobden Cemetery

Ronal W. Leamen
JOHNSTON CITY -- Ronal W. Leamen, 67, of Johnston City, died at 5 p. m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at home, surrounded by family and friends. Per his request, his body was cremated. There will be no visitation or services. Friends are invited to the family's home to visit. His final resting place will be at the Leamen Family Cemetery. Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City is in charge of arrangements. Ronal was born on May 10, 1937, in West Frankfort, the son of Robert and Alpha (Marrs) Leamen. He married Charlene Phipps on Dec. 4, 1967, in Mount Vernon, and she survives. Ronal was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a veteran, serving in the
Army for two years. He is survived by four children, Rhonda Svenson of Vancouver, Wash. , Bryan Leamen of Allyn, Wash. , Tracey Leamen of Marion, and Rebecca Bullock of Johnston City; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Sarah and Ashley Svenson, Samantha, Tom and Anna Arionna Leamen, and Caitlin 'Little' Bullock; one brother, Luther Leamen of Johnston City; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Towers and Carol and Dale Jones, all of Johnston City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bobby Gene and Carl Dwayne Leamen; an infant brother; and one sister, Betty (Leamen) Trent.

Mr. Bierman was a retired carpenter at Chester Mental Health Center. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. He was also a member of the Retired Carpenter's Union in Chester, the BBK American Legion Post 480 in Steeleville and Kaskaskia VFW Post 3553 in Chester. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was born on March 15, 1918, in Steeleville, to C. Ferd and Wilhelmina Thies Bierman. He married Wynona L. Bollmann on Feb. 5, 1949, in Blytheville, Ark. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Maureen Bierman, Jerry and Paula Bierman, and Ronald and Julie Bierman, all of Steeleville; six grandchildren, Melissa Schwartz and her husband, Nathan, of Pinckneyville, Michael Bierman Jr. of Charleston, S. C. , Mark Bierman of Carbondale, Patrick Bierman of Dekalb, and Rebecca and Suzanne Bierman, both of Dixon, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Karlye and Kyler Bierman; two step-great-grandchildren, Nicole Blaylock and Jeremy Donagher; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William and Dorothy Bierman of Paradise, Calif. , and John Bierman of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 7 p. m. conducted by Lake Creek Masonic Lodge 729 of Johnston City. Albert was born on Aug. 12, 1920, in West Frankfort, the son of John and Ursula (Brazitis) Zukosky. He married Gloria Spees on June 4, 1966, in Marion. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1995. Albert was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy Seabees. He was a member of West Englewood Home Masonic Lodge 1074 and Orient American Legion Post 1961. He is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Shirley Zukosky of Illinois and Jacqueline and Jim Hess of Cambria; one granddaughter, Treva Hess, and other grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Sukoski of Norridge, Helen Zukosky of West Frankfort, and Anna Parreira of Granite City; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters, Emily and Josephine Zukosky; and five brothers, Joseph, Walter, John, Edward and Frank Zukosky.
William R. Johnson
DOWELL -- William R. Johnson, 76, of Dowell, passed away at 1:25 a. m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Bill was a retired federal firefighter working at the Granite City military Depot and the Savannah
Army Depot. He was a member of the Spirit of Life Christian Church in Du Quoin, as well as a deacon of the church. He was a member of the Dowell Fire Department and a member of the Coal Belt Firefighters Association. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Bill was born on Aug. 17, 1928, in Girard, the son of Joseph T. and Kathryn (Schoen) Johnson. He married Bertha H. Robinson Downs on Dec. 21, 1974, in Granite City, and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Dowell; four children and their spouses, Karmel and Richard Fulcher and Russell Kevin Johnson, all of Granite City, Sherri and Stephen Ford of Du Quoin, and Dennis and Crystal Downs of Elkville; one brother, Earl T. Johnson of Collinsville; six grandchildren, Sarah and Tim Johnson, Brian and Stephen Dickerson, and Shaun and Keri Downs. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 11 a. m. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. She was born on April 29, 1964, at Du Quoin the daughter of Harry E. Strong Jr. and Joe Ann (Borgsmiller) Strong. She married Lindon R. Paxton on Aug. 27, 1982, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Du Quoin, and he survives. She is survived by her husband of Du Quoin; two sons, Blake Andrew Paxton and Kyle Richard Paxton both of Du Quoin; her mother, Joe Ann Strong of Du Quoin; sisters and brothers, Janet McCurdy and husband Charles of Du Quoin; Harry Strong III and wife Sylvia of Dove Canyon, Calif. , Cynthia Heape and husband John of Tamaroa, Patricia Aue and husband Shawn of Du Quoin, Joseph Strong and wife Candace of Carterville and Susan Johnson and husband Kenneth of Newton; brother-in-law, Wayne Harris and wife Debbie of Du Quoin; two sisters-in-law, Anita Grunner and husband Brent of Bradenton, Fla. and LaDonna Chapman and husband Sam of Du Quoin; and several nieces and nephews. Sminet 'Louise' Mueller
DOWELL -- Sminet 'Louise' Mueller, 70 of Dowell, went to be with the Lord at 6:30 a. m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, for her personal service with God. Louise was a warm, caring person who touched everyone she met and left them feeling better each time she parted. Her smile and laugh were ones that will be missed but will always live in our minds. Anyone who knew Louise will understand this as we all do. She loved all. She helped those in need in any way she could. Louise was a homemaker. She was a member of the Dowell Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday school class and was an events coordinator at the church. Louise was born on April 23, 1934, in Booneville, Miss. , the daughter of Gabriel and Sminet (Woodard) Moreland. She married Fred Mueller on Dec. 4, 1970, in Pinckneyville, and he survives. She is survived by her husband of Dowell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Sally Mueller of Dowell and Jason and Tamiko Mueller of Carbondale; three stepchildren, Rose Mary Stratman of Vienna, Mo. , James Mueller of Carbondale, and Carl Mueller of Raymor, Mo.; one brother, Robert Moreland of Joiner, Ark.; eight grandchildren, David, Mercedes, Elizabeth and Josh Mueller, Vicky and James Stratman, and Andrew and Chris Mueller; and four great-grandchildren, Zarron Mueller and Mary, Anna and Steven Stratman. MARION -- Paul J. Roy, 92 of Marion, formerly of Momence, passed away at 5:55 a. m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with the Rev. Richard G. Mohr officiating. military rites will be held at the church after the service by Marion VFW Post 1301 and American Legion Post 147. Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery
in Wilmington. There will be no visitation. Blue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Roy was born on Aug. 13, 1912, in Momence, to Jerry and Rosalie (Hebert) Roy. He married Ruth Smith Jan. 17, 1942, in Kankakee, and she survives. Other survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Homer and Lucille Roy of Carbondale; niece, Joyce Sippel; nephews, Gerald Chouinard and Lee Theesfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and two brothers. Mr. Roy retired from Manteno State Hospital, where he worked as the store keeper for 20 years. He served in the U. S.
Army during World War II. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. He was a member of the Kankakee American Legion Post 85 and a charter member of Lonestar Chapter 37 Division. He loved to travel with his wife.
Lorene P. Barter
MARION -- Lorene P. Barter, 87, Dec. 16, 2004, died in St. Peters Manor Care Center. She was born on March 21, 1917, in Franklin County to Ira E. and Ruby S. Palmer. Mrs. Barter is survived by a son, Kenneth Barter Sr. of St. Charles Mo.; three grandchildren, Kenneth Barter Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Ala. , Michael Barter of Curryville, Mo. and Melissa Spellman of St. Peters, Mo.; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barter was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister. Mrs. Barter had been employed as a cost accountant by Sangamo Electric Company of Marion and Pickens, S. C. , for 36 years prior to her retirement. Following her retirement, she was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Action in Greenville, S. C. , before moving to Missouri. in Johnston City. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p. m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Abney was born on Nov. 7, 1925, in Marion to Earl M. and Opal (Cox) Abney. Survivors include sisters, Mary Land of Johnston City, Dorothy Tryben of Oreana and Betty Primm of Griffith, Ind.; eight nephews; and seven nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant sister, Reba Jane Abney. Mr. Abney was a former coal miner and also worked for the Orkin Exterminating Corporation. He loved to travel and hike. He was a Protestant.

Karen Kay (Prosise) Combs
McLEANSBORO -- Karen Kay (Prosise) Combs, 51, rejoined the universal life energy at 12:32 p. m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at home, surrounded by her family and closest friend, after a 41/2-year battle with cancer. Karen was born on Feb. 10, 1953, in McLeansboro. She attended Eastern Illinois University to obtain her bachelor's degree in 1975. She married Blair Combs on Aug. 7, 1976, and they spent the next year teaching in Jamaica. Upon returning, she completed her master's degree in 1979 and was hired the same year in the Galatia school system as a reading specialist. Six years later she completed her general administrative certification and was hired as principal/teacher in the Hamilton County school system. She was principal at four of the five district grade schools over the next 18 years, starting in 1986, and served the district as Title I director; gifted coordinator; remedial and gifted summer school organizer/director; computer facilitator; and grant writer for reading improvement, Title II and school improvement. At the regional level, she was the creator and facilitator of the Principal's Collegial Network and a member of the education committee for Mitchell Museum. She served at the state level as a senior reviewer in the Quality Assurance program for schools. Karen was presented the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award by ISBE member Harry Litchfield in 1998, one of 160 winners nationwide. The same year, she received an Award of Excellence in the state program Those Who Excel after being nominated by her peers. In 2003, Karen was given the Herman Graves Service Award by the Egyptian Region of the Illinois Principal Association. Karen was known for putting children first, and throughout the community as a fair and kind administrator. Karen was preceded in death by her father, Keith Prosise. Survivors include her mother, Louis Prosise Eggley; her husband, Blair; her children, Kayci and Zachary; and her half-brother, Dale Prosise of Salem. No funeral services will be held. A memorial service is planned for early February, around the time of her birthday. Harre Funeral Home will assist with memorial arrangements. Rick Rieckenberg
MURPHYSBORO -- Rick Rieckenberg, 60, of Murphysboro, husband, father, son, grandfather and brother, passed away at 7:30 a. m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in a trucking accident in Gallatin County. He was born on Nov. 25, 1944, in Campbell Hill, the son of Alfred and Marie Wedemeyer Rieckenberg. On Dec. 9, 1988, he was married to Sue Adams. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Campbell Hill. Rick was employed by Hines Oil Company of Murphysboro as an over-the-road truck driver. He was formerly employed by Arch Mineral Corp. in Percy for more than 25 years. He served in Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 130th Infantry, from 1963 to 1969. He was a member of North America Hunting Club and the NRA, and he was a life member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a devoted husband and loving father who will be missed by his wife, Sue, of Murphysboro; his father, Alfred Rieckenberg of Murphysboro; three daughters, Lynn Rieckenberg of Carbondale, Cindy Cline of Murphysboro and Jacklyn Rieckenberg of Carterville; three sons, Randy Adams of Murphysboro, Keith Adams of Hampton, Ga. , and Michael Adams of Murphysboro; one brother, Roger Rieckenberg of Willisville; one sister, Dorothy McCormick of Murphysboro; his grandchildren, William and Joseph 'J. R. ' Romeo, both of Carbondale, and Heather 'Buddy' Adams and Carmen and Hannah Cline, all of Murphysboro; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Rieckenberg. Services will be at 2 p. m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, in Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Howard Ellis officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are requested for the family and may be left at the funeral home. Envelopes will be provided.

HERRIN -- Barbara Krueger, 70, went to be with her beloved Savior on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004. Services will be at 2 p. m. today in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jerry Ford and Brad Harlow officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery
in Carterville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. today at the funeral home. Barbara was the daughter of Dwight and Sarah Elena (Moudglin) Smith. She was born on Feb. 10, 1934, in Colp. She was a member of Second Baptist Church of Herrin. Earlier in life, she was an instructor at Don Roberts Beauty School in Chicago. She is survived by her beloved husband, Albert 'Bud' Krueger; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Sneed of Cleveland, Tenn.; three nieces, Sheila Kay Stansbury of Fort Madison, Iowa, Donna Boyer of Iowa, and Roseanne Camarato of Herrin; and five nephews, Danny Burns of Sikeston, Mo. , Tim Sneed of Cleveland, Tenn. , Bill Smith of Fort Madison, Iowa, Michael Smith of Iowa City, Iowa, and Brian Smith of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; two nephews, Jimmy Cunningham and Randy Camarato; one sister, Margaret Camarato; and one brother, Bill Smith. Barbara's hobbies were picking four-leaf clovers and walking her dog, Angel. Barbara was a volunteer for Reach to Recovery, a program of the American Cancer Society. Her special friends were Lucille Woodford of Energy and Joyce Calvert of Herrin.
