MARION -- Mary Beaver, 50, of Downers Grove, formerly of Marion, died at 3:40 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at home in Downers Grove. Mary was born on April 17, 1954, in Marion, to Ben and Lola (Lindsey) Little. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, James Dunn of Carbondale and Keith Haack of Downers Grove; one daughter, Tammy Woolard of Herrin; two grandchildren, Seth and Justin Woolard; three brothers, Bennie Little of Johnston City and Allen Little and Carrol Cook, both of Marion; and two sisters, Linda Lyerla of Marion and Lois Lambert of Belleville. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, the Rev. Don Little; and three infant sisters. Services will be at 1 p. m. ROCKWOOD -- Mildred Vera Petrowske, 85, died at 5:20 p. m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Three Springs Lodge in Chester. Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Bremen, with the Rev. Edwin A. Reuter officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery
in Steeleville. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p. m. Monday and from 7:30 to 9 a. m. Tuesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville and from 10 to 11 a. m. Tuesday at the church. Mrs. Petrowske was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bremen. She was an avid quilt maker in the area. She enjoyed all aspects of quilting. She was born on May 10, 1919, in Wine Hill, to Edwin W. and Laura A. Hallworth Alms. She married Jesse Petrowske on June 29, 1936, in Chester, and he passed away on Nov. 29, 1988. Survivors include two children and their spouses, Patsy and Ralph Wilson of Steeleville and Elroy and Mary Petrowske of Rockwood; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard Alms of Chester; and two sisters, Lydell Edler of Steeleville and Helen Shewmake of Harrisburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Ronald Wilson; and two brothers. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church of Bremen or Three Springs Lodge.

HERRIN -- Arthur Lee Leeper, 86, of Herrin, passed away at 2:05 a. m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Frankfort Care Center in West Frankfort. Mr. Leeper was born on Aug. 23, 1927, in Herrin, to Lee Roy and Gertrude Kelley Leeper. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Herrin. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in business administration. Survivors include three sons, Roy Lee Leeper of the Chicago area, Richard Lee Leeper of Bridgeview and Martin Edward Leeper of the Chicago area; one daughter, Rose Lee Leeper of Chicago; four grandchildren; one sister, Vivian M. Freiwald of Midlothian; four great-nieces; two great-nephews; and one aunt, Leona Grisko of Milwaukee, Wis. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Marcellia Christina Leeper and Torrey Hendershott; one brother, Billy Joe Leeper; and two sisters, Thelma and Mildred Leeper. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Monday, Dec. 20, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Don Grammer officiating. Services will be held at noon Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in the First Apostolic Church in Marion, with the Revs. R. G. Walls, Keith Younkin and Paul Carter and Missionary Ron Brian officiating. Mr. Norris was born on Dec. 10, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio, to Arthur E. and Eileen (Dunning) Norris. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, David Lee and Heather Norris of Pittsburg and Jeremy Norris and his fiance, Laura Murphy of Pittsburg; one grandson, Brinnen Norris; and his parents, Arthur E. and Eileen Norris of Pittsburg. Mr. Norris worked as a store manager of the West Frankfort Kroger store. He had been with the Kroger Corporation since 1989. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Marion. He loved to sing, play his guitar and spend time with his family and his church family.
Royce Simeon Hundley
VIENNA -- Royce Simeon Hundley, 97, passed away at 8:20 p. m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Dr. Hundley was born Dec. 5, 1907, in Vienna. He was the son of Richard A. Hundley and Naomi Gertrude (Verhines) Hundley. A lifelong bachelor, Royce lovingly cared for his mother, Gertrude Hundley McCorkle, 'Aunt Gertie,' as she was fondly called, until her death in 1961. Survivors include nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Royce was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Dr. Robert A. Hundley, R. Herman Hundley, Grace Evelyn Hundley Funk, Tom Verhines Hundley, Dora Louise Hundley Rinkel and Helen Pearl McCorkle Simmons. Additionally, Royce was preceded in death by his stepfather, William McCorkle. Royce graduated from Vienna High School, received his dental degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1933, and had a solo private dental practice in Vienna from 1934 to 1942. As an
Army dentist, Capt. Hundley developed a saliva respirator for dental care while serving in North Africa and Italy during World War II. After his services in the European Theater, Capt. Hundley was in transit to the Pacific when World War II ended in August 1945. Dr. Hundley returned to Vienna in 1946, after receiving his honorable military discharge. Dr. Hundley practiced general dentistry from his office on the second floor of the Vienna Times newspaper building until his retirement. 'Doc' was especially interested in history and was somewhat of an expert on Vienna and Johnson County. He had a keen mind, remarkable memory and had lived in Vienna all his life, except for the years spent in college and military service. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. The body will be cremated and a graveside committal service will be conducted in January 2005 at the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Vienna Public Library, PO Box 616, Viennna, IL 62995-0616. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
Lit 'L. T. ' Simon Jr.
CARBONDALE -- Lit 'L. T. ' Simon Jr. was granted by God to begin his earthly life on July 18, 1921, in Kerriville, Tenn. , to the union of Jeanether (Bland) Simon and Lit Simon Sr. L. T. left his earthly home at 8:33 a. m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, for a home prepared for those who love the Lord. L. T. accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age. He was baptized at the Jones Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Kerriville. He would often talk about that day. After his family relocated to Carbondale in January 1940, he united with the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Rev. W. H. Clark. L. T. 's favorite song, and he sang it often, was 'Swing Low, Swing Chariot. 'He received his education training in the Millington school system in Kerriville. After much prayer and teaching from his parents, L. T. returned to doing the Lord's work, showing love for others. He made coffee for more than 25 years for the Alcoholic Anonymous Organization at the First Baptist Church and received an award for 25 years of attendance. He cared for the sick senior citizens. L. T. 's Lawn Service was second to none, and he could be seen over the years on Sundays taking flowers for his mother to Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church. L. T. 's family who showed love and who remain include two sisters, L. Beatrice Garrett of Chicago and Margaret Jean Nesbitt of Carbondale; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Charles Simon and Elbert and Yolanda Simon, all of Carbondale; seven nephews and their spouses, Charles and Cathy Laster of Memphis, Tenn. , Jarnes Darnell and Heneritta Nesbitt of St. Paul, Minn. , and Craig, Clifton, Bobby, Darrick, Elbert Simon II and Dennis Higgins, all of Carbondale; six nieces, Delores and her husband, Traci King-Green, Debra Nesbitt, and Kristin and Cara Gregory, all of Carbondale, Kimberly Griffin of Decatur, and Akia Simon of Houston; one uncle, Inez Bland of Coldwater, Miss.; two sisters-in-law, Claudette and Jacie Simon, both of Carbondale; and a host of great- and great-great-nieces, -nephew, cousins, other relatives and friends from Carbondale, Miami, Memphis, Tenn. , Decatur, Marion, and Springfield. His father, mother, one sister, one brother, five aunts and three uncles preceded him in death. Services will be held at 1 p. m. today in the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. MOUNT VERNON -- Emerald Page Lowery, 85, of Mount Vernon, died at 6 a. m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, in Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. She was born on Oct. 27, 1919, to Ray and Julia (Williams) Foster in Franklin County. She was first married to Kenneth G. Page Sr. on Feb. 8, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1982. She later married Harold Lowery on Nov. 11, 1989, in Mount Vernon, and he survives. Emerald was a dietary supervisor at Elgin State Hospital until retirement and was a member of the State Retired Employees Association. She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Harold Lowery of Mount Vernon; one son and daughter-in-law, K. Gordon and Patty Page of Dahlgren; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard 'Dick' Brake of Marion; one stepdaughter, Becky Grothoff of Mount Vernon; one stepson, Terry M. Edward Hall Nichols
JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- Edward Hall Nichols, 77, of Jefferson City died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Oak View Skilled Care. He was born on March 6, 1927, in Havana, a son of Cecil Arthur and Mildred Hall Nichols. He was a 1945 graduate of Central High School in Peoria, and was a 1959 graduate of LaSalle College in Chicago. He was married June 8, 1956, in Virginia to Verna M. Cramer, who survives at home. Edward served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Washington during World War II. He worked for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 32 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; the Lions Club in Seney, Mich.; the Illinois Police Association; the Association of Chiefs of Police; the Audubon Society; Ducks Unlimited; and the Delta Marsh Association. Ed was an avid waterfowl hunter and loved the outdoors. Others survivors include one son, John C. Nichols of Jefferson City; two daughters, Kathy Gramlich of Prairie Village, Kan.; Julie Nichols of Rye, N. H.; one sister, Barbara Maloney of Duluth, Minn.; and eight grandchildren, Brian, Sarah, and Paige Gramlich, Christopher, Lindsey, Madison, Lauren, and Sam Nichols. ANNA -- Jack P. Maddox, 86, of Anna, died at 12:35 a. m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born Jan. 21, 1918, in Anna, the son of William and Lela Wall Maddox. He married Haskell Sally Goodman on May 14, 1938, in Jackson, Mo. , and she preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1996. One daughter, Carolyn Kay Crooks, also preceded him in death. He has no known survivors. Jack was a veteran of the U. S. Navy in World War II. He was a life member of the Anna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3455 and a member of the Anna Masonic Lodge 520 A. F. and A. M. He was a licensed pilot and a retired retail merchant. He lived at Anna Vista Highrise the last several years until recently becoming a resident of the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna. Visitation for Jack P. Maddox will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Sunday at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. Masonic rites by the Anna Masonic Lodge 520 will be conducted at 7 p. m. Sunday in the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a. m.
