Clyde D. Poore

Clyde D. Poore, 86, of Carmi, formerly of Norris City, died Tuesday morning, February 22, 2000 at the White county Medical Center Skilled Care Unit.

He was born May 7, 1912 in Enfield, the son of Sylvanus and Lavonna (Proudfitt) Poore.

He had been married to Mabel Princze for 59 years, and she preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Frances.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Judy Poore of Springerton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley and Richard Kron of Greenback, TN, and Ruth Yates of Morton; four grandchildren, Julie Jordan of Vonore, TN, Stewart and Donnie Poore, both of Springerton, and Brenda Yates of Creve Couer; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur Poore of Champaign; and one sister, Edna Galloway of Olney.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2000 at Enfield Cemetery.

Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home of Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

William E. Batty, Sr.

William E. Batty, Sr., of Carmi, died Thursday evening, March 2, 2000 at White County Skilled Care.

He was born March 25, 1930 in Carmi, the son of John and Opal Hanks Batty.

Mr. Batty was a retired oilfield worker.

he is survived by three sons, Michael Swank of OH, William Batty, Jr. of Carmi, and Robbie Batty of WA; six daughters, Connie Burris, Karen Gwaltney, and Sheryl Brown, all of Carmi; Tammy Peterson of Hiram, OH, Cristy Schreiber of Lorain, OH, and Jennifer Faller of Thurston, OH; seventeen grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sisters, Veronica Lane of Salion, OH, Loretta Benke of San Diego, CA, and Jennet Davis of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by one son, David Lee Batty and one sister, Vivian Batty.

There will be no visitation.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Rollin S. Kiefer

Rollin S. Kiefer, 71 of Carmi, died Friday afternoon March 17, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.

He was born January 18, 1929 in Appleton City, MO the son of Earnie S. and Hester (Peters) Kiefer.

He was married to Betty Adams and she survives.

Also surviving is his mother Hester of Grayville; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie & Doyle Duvall of Lockport; five grandchildren, and one brother and sister-in-law, Earnie D. and Mabel Kiefer of Grayville.

Services will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday March 19, 2000 in the chapel at White County Memorial Garden, with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating.

The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Velvie Cleveland

Velvie Cleveland, 74 of Carmi died Friday afternoon March 17, 2000 at the White County Hospital.

She was born December 24, 1925 in Livingston, TN the daughter of Frank & Mary Lula (Brown) Taylor.

She was married to Clarence Cleveland on January 16, 1952 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1976.

Mrs. Cleveland was a homemaker and a member of the Gospel Temple Church.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy & mike collard of Danville, and Joyce & L.D. Wolf of Carmi; six grandchildren, Denny Bartley, Elizabeth Baxley, Chad Baxley, Dexter Wolf, Sheila Brown, and Michael Collard; eight great-grandchildren, and special neices and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brother, Lucian, and Frank Taylor, and three sisters, Geneva and Linnie Taylor and Inez Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 19, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Joe Atkinson officiating.

Burial will be in Little Wabash Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday March 18, 2000 at the funeral home.

Walter Ronald Steele

Walter Ronald Steele, 90 of Gulfport, MS, and formerly of Mt. Carmel, IL died on Saturday, March 18, 2000 in Gulfport, MS.

He was born in Emma, IL.

He had been a resident of the Coast since 1982, after moving from Carmi, IL.

He was a member of Mt. Carmel Elks Lodge No. 715. He was a retired owner of a construction business in Mt. Carmel, IL.

He was an avid golfer.

He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Steele; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joan & Dale Bateman of Virginia, IL, Patricia Ann & Ed Kuehling of Gulfport, MS, and Deborah Dean & Steve Douglas of Atlanta, GA; eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Bradley of Norris City, IL four brothers, Ernest O. Steele of Gurnee, IL, Eugene C. Steele of Corpus Christi, TX, Kermit Lee Steele of Mt. Vernon, IN, and Raymond L. Steele of Van Nuys, CA.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva & Nancy; one brother, Cameron Steele, and one grandchild, Steven Bateman.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2000 at the Concord Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating.

The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Robert D. Clark

Robert D. Clark, 70 of Carmi died Wednesday evening March 29, 2000 at the White County Medical Skilled Care Unit.

He was born March 21, 1930 in West Frankfort, the son of James T. and Hazel (Green) Clark.

Mr. Clark was a retired Truck Driver and a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Navy.

He is survived by one sister, Carol Pollard of Carmi, one brother, Charles E. Clark of Beeville, TX and a niece, Kay Richards of Maunie.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 1, 2000 at Union Cemetery in Norris City.

No visitation will be held.

Irvin R. Carter

Irvin R. Carter, 79 of Springerton died Saturday morning April 1, 2000 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN.

He was born September 14, 1920 in Springerton, the son of Delbert and Nell Canterbury Carter.

Mr. Carter retired from Whirlpool Corp. in Evansville, IN where he had worked as a machinist.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Springerton American Legion, and the Carmi V.F.W. and was also a member of the Springerton Methodist Church.

He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Veda and Marshall Johnson of Fairfield, a niece with whom he had lived the last few years, Kim Butler of Monroe City, IN, sisters-in-law, Juanita Carter of Springerton, Rose Carter of Erie, PA, and Maxine Carter of Springerton, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Osborn, Harold, Wilson, Edwin and Dorwin Carter.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating.

Burial will be in Hammock Cemetery in Springerton.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Donna L. Key

Donna L. Key, 44 of Enfield, died Saturday afternoon April 8, 2000 at Welborn Hospital in Evansville.

She was born December 3, 1955 in Forestville, NY the daughter of John L. and Barbara Palmer.

She married Clarence R. Key on December 17, 1976 in Donkirk, NY and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Polly Palmer of Enfield, and Rebecca and Steve Vaughan of Geff; three grandchildren, Taylor Vaughan and Christopher and Gabrielle Palmer; one brother, John L. Palmer of Forestville, NY and one sister, Linda Ivett of South Dayton, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday April 11, 2000 at Little Zion Cemetery near Mill Shoals.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday April 10, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield.

Mrytle M. Hetzel

Myrtle M. Hetzel, 88 of Mill Shoals died Tuesday evening April 25, 2000 at Way-Fair Nursing Home in Fairfield.

She was born December 14, 1911 in Hamilton County, the daughter of James W. and Eliza (Powell) Hiley.

She was first married to Frank Bailey in 1929 and he preceded her in death in 1966.

She later married Wilson Hetzel and he preceded her in death in 1995.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, James and Eva Bailey of Mill Shoals, and Franklin Bailey of Fairfield; three daughters and sons-in-law, Flora Randolph of Springerton, Dorothy and Thomas Randolph of Clearfield, Utah, and Edna and Rev. Gary Velie of Macon, GA; nineteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances Venters of Mill Shoals, Julie Mayhue of Mill Shoals, Martha and Richard Haering of Indianapolis, IN, and Earllean Silverheel of Elizabethtown.

She is also survived by five stepchildren, Duane Hetzel of Fairfield, Ladonna Redmon of Mill Shoals, Darlene Brooks of Grove City, OH, Carolyn Cariens of Fairfield, and Nevalene Doades of Houston, TX.

She was preceded in death by one brother, James Hiley, and two sisters, Sarah Rogers, and Gusta Carter.

Mrs.. Hetzel had been a cook at Mill Shoals school for many years.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Mill Shoals, and the Gospel Assembly Church in mill Shoals.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2000 at the Gospel Assembly Church in Mill Shoals with Rev. John Reed officiating.

Burial will be in Shrewsbury Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday April 28, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Mill Shoals.

Hazel M. Thomas

Hazel M. Thomas, 72 of Carmi died Thursday morning April 27, 2000 at her residence.

She was born November 2, 1927 in White County the daughter of Joseph S. and Robbie (Cook) Greer.

Mrs. Thomas had worked at Ainsbrook for 28 years.

She had worked as a nurse aid at the White County Nursing Home for 8 years and for over 15 years at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

She is survived by one son, Marty Dale Thomas of Carmi, three grandchildren, Matthew Scott Edmonds, Brittany Jill Edmonds, and Brandi Elizabeth Thomas all of Carmi; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby and Dallas McClurken of Carmi, and Lillian "Peewee" Greer of Carmi, and one brother William E. Greer of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, William Andrew Thomas, two brothers, Henderson and Norbert Greer, and two sisters, Velma R. Pretzsch and Inez Dean.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday April 30 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Kingdom Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday April 29, 2000 at the funeral home.

Mary Jane Steele

Mary Jane Steele, 84 of Gulfport, MS and formerly of Mt. Carmel, died Saturday evening April 29, 2000 at the Gulfport Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 16, 1915 in Emma, the daughter of William H. and Dena Agnes (Fischer) Frease.

She had been married to Walter Ronald Steele and after 64 years of marriage he preceded her in death on march 18, 2000.

Mrs. Steele was a homemaker and owner of Jane's Beauty Shop in Mt. Carmel.

She enjoyed playing golf, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Ed Kuehling of Gulfport, MS and Deborah Dean and Steve Douglas of Atlanta, GA, one step-daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Joan and Dale Bateman of Virginia, IL; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday May 3, 2000 at the Concord United Methodist Church in Emma with Burial in the church Cemetery.

The family will meet friends 1/2 hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the Humane Society of South Mississippi-SPCA, 13756 Washington Ave., Gulfport, MS 39503.

Elizabeth Farmer

Elizabeth Farmer 73 of Carmi died early Saturday morning May 6, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center.

She was born January 26, 1927 in Eldorado the daughter of Robert and Susie (Bishop) Farmer.

She is survived by two sisters and brother-in-law, Ada Mae and Leland Garner of Woodriver, and Nellie Erwin of Carmi.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Farmer and two sisters, Lillie Helen Decker and Mildred Erwin.

She was a member of First Baptist church.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 8, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Carmi, with Burial at Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado.

Remains will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 7, 2000 from 5-7 p.m. at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Janella Nelson

Janella Nelson 66 of Enfield died Saturday morning May 6, 2000 at her home.

She had retired from Airtex in Fairfield after 45 years.

She was a member of the Burnt Prairie Eastern Star No. 500, and was also a member of the Christian Church in Mill Shoals.

She was born April 25, 1934 in Mill Shoals, the daughter of Bert and Gusta (Hiley) Carter.

She married Wayne Nelson June 20, 1959 in Carmi and he survives.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Brenda Nelson of rural Enfield; four grandchildren, Brandon, Daniel, Emily and Matthew Nelson; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth Carter of Lancaster, CA, Robert and Lynn Carter of Enfield, Arthur and Elzie Carter of Mantera, CA, Danny and Debbie Carter of Springfield, Gerald and Geraldine Carter of Greentown, IN, and Richard and Paula Carter of Lafayette, IN; and five sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Gerald Clevenger of Mill Shoals, Patty Larch of Argenta, Rosie and Sammy Simpson of Barnhill, Millie Stuhlman of Decatur, and Rebecca Lane of Fairfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday May 11, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Kitty Sweeten Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday may 10, 2000 at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Southern Illinois Hospice.

Clarence Walter "Bud" Westfall

Clarence Walter "Bud" Westfall, 81 of Carmi, died Wednesday evening May 10, 2000 at his home.

He was born October 12, 1918 in Vincennes, IN, the son of Clarence Walter and Dessie (Snyder) Westfall.

He was married to Martha "Marty" Elizabeth Logan on November 15, 1937 and she survives.

Mr. Westfall was a Diamond Coring Engineer in the oil fields.

He was a commercial pilot and managed Carmi's first airport.

He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Core during WWII serving as a Bombardier.

He was a member of the Carmi American Legion and VFW.

He was also an avid golfer.

After retirement, he helped his wife in her doll business.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jon & Marilyn Westfall of Carmi and Fred & Peggy Westfall of Marion; five grandchildren and their spouse, Douglas & Sheila Westfall, Michael & Lei Anne Westfall, Robin & jerry Sullivan, Tracy & Russ Rau, Jeff & Tammy Westfall; and eleven great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two sisters and brother-in-law, Winnie & Bill Foster of Vincennes and Dorothy Godare of Vincennes.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, David Westfall and two brothers, Harold and Marvin Westfall.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday may 13, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral home in Carmi.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, may 12, 2000 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in White County Memorial Gardens.

Billy D. Woodrow

Billy D. Woodrow 69 of Springerton, died Thursday evening May 11, 2000 in the Emergency Room of Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Woodrow was a retired carpenter.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #1126 in Springerton and the V.F.W. Post in Carmi.

He was born November 16, 1930 in Hamilton County the son of Elery and Ruby Smith Woodrow.

He was married to Carol Puntney on July 4, 1952 in Springerton and she survives.

He is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Teresa Woodrow of Springerton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shari Woodrow of Effingham, Patty and Richard Clark and Barbara and Clayton Nelson all of Springerton; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Ethel Woodrow of Springerton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Verna Lee Etienne of Springerton, Peggy and Merle Stahl of Denver, CO and Doris and James Prince of Byesville, OH; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday May 15, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Springerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday May 14, 2000 at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
