Hester A. Kiefer

Hester A. Kiefer, 91 of Carmi, died Monday evening September 25, 2000 at the Meadowood Nursing Home in Grayville. She was born February 10, 1909 in Calhoun, MO, the daughter of Agusta and Mary Evelyn (DeWitt) Peters. She married Earnie S. Kiefer on February 10, 1928 in Kiefer, OK, and he preceded her in death on December 24, 1984.

Mrs. Kiefer had worked for the Illinois Department of Public Aid. She was a past noble grand of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carmi.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Earnie D. and Mabel Kiefer of Grayville; three grandchildren, David Kiefer of Albion, Tim Kiefer of Grayville, and Sherrie Duvall of Lockport; nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Rollin S. Kiefer, two brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday September 28, 2000 in the chapel at White County Memorial Garden with Rev. Rex Pilcher officiating. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Bill DeLong

Bill DeLong, 60, of Maunie, died Wednesday afternoon, September 27, 2000 at his home.He was born on June 22, 1940 in Mattoon, the son of Harold and Mabel Burris DeLong.

He is survived by two brothers, James & Betty DeLong of Carmi and John & Doris DeLong of Maunie, one sister, Ruth & Andy Bostic of Lawrenceville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eugene DeLong and Glenn DeLong.

Mr. DeLong was a stocker at Martin & Baileys now Buehlers Buy Low Grocery for 30 years.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Bill Fechtig officiating. Burial will be in Marshall Ferry Cemetery in Rising Sun. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday September 29, 2000 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Maunie United Methodist Church.

Lela J. Lee

Lela J. Lee, 90 of Enfield, died Monday afternoon October 9, 2000 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, In. She was born November 26, 1909 in Enfield, the daughter of Samuel S. and Lillie J. (Duncan) Staley. She was married to William H. Lee on November 19, 1945 and he preceded her in death on April, 1983.

Mrs. Lee and her husband lived and worked for over 30 years in Rockford, Il before returning to Enfield. She is a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Smallwood of Granville; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Sherman and Terry Turrentine of Newark, Ca; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, George, Frank, Arthur, Tom Staley, and one in infancy, and three sisters, Pines Ruegg, Flora Grischkowsky and one in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday October 12, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday October 11, 2000 at the funeral home.

Emmarene Pollard

Emmarene Pollard 91, of Carmi, died Saturday evening October 14, 2000 at the White County Medical Center in Carmi. She was born March 3, 1909 in Emma, the daughter of John and Mary (Ray) Chastain.

She was married to Ossie Pollard on April 8, 1928 in Harrisburg and he preceded her in death on April 12, 1990.

Mrs. Pollard was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and attended the Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Glenda Pollard of Carmi; one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Melvin Duncan of Carmi; a daughter-in-law, Karen Evers of Carmi; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Gerald, one brother, and two sisters, Gertie Fisher, and Verla Embry.

Funeral services will be held a 1 p.m. on Tuesday October 17, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Burial in Concord Cemetery at Emma. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday October 16, 2000 at the funeral home.

Opal Crawford

Opal Crawford, 95 of Carmi, died Sunday morning October 15, 2000 at White County Medical Center. She was born April 14, 1905 in Dale, the daughter of Charlie and Hattie Easter (Ritchenson) Crayne.

Mrs. Crawford had been a nurse’s aid at local nursing homes and had attended the Pentecostal church.

Mrs. Crawford is survived by two sons, Charles Crawford of Merritt Island, Fl, and Ray Crawford of New Milford, CT; one daughter, Eloise Rickard of Evansville, In,; six grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Arlie Crayne of Carmi, and three sisters, Dorothy Fishback of Carmi, Oma Ellison of Carmi, and Inez Aldrich of Carmi. She was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. Silas Crayne and 2 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday October 19, 2000 at Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday October 18, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Anthony Hamblin

Anthony R. Hamblin, 38 of Crossville, died suddenly Sunday afternoon October 15, 2000 in the emergency room at White County Medical Center. He was born August 8, 1962 in Carmi, the son of James Hamblin and Judy (Youngman) Aud. He married Kimberly Holland on March 10, 1986 and she survives. He is also survived by one son, Zachary Hamblin and one daughter, Kendra Hamblin, both at home.

He is survived by his father James Hamblin. His mother Judy Aud of Maunie; three brothers, Bill, Jeremy and Samuel Hamblin, all of Norris City, five sisters, Susan Robison of Mt. Vernon, IN, Jacklin Young and Peggy Aud of Maunie, Amy Buttry of Carmi and Diane Schiefels of Norris City, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Cindy Mercer and his maternal grandmother, June Handley.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be in Marshall Ferry Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at the funeral home.

Rainey Baker

Rainey Baker, 26 of Carmi died suddenly Saturday evening October 14, 2000 in Houston, Texas. She was born October 11, 1974 in Houston Texas, the daughter of Clayton Edward Coaliron and Connie (Lamont) Lambdin.

She is survived by her father of Splendora, Texas, her mother of Carmi; two sons, Kenneth Renshaw and Brandon Browning; three daughters, Ashley Coaliron, Cheyenne Baker, and Alexus Baker; one brother, Clayton Coaliron of Carmi; four sisters Joyce Holloman, Tina Coaliron, April Coaliron, and Misty Jennings all of Carmi.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday October 23, 2000 at Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Larry D. Blake

Larry D. Blake, 48, of Carmi, died October 25, 2000. He was born April 3, 1952 in Greenville, KY, the son of Delmar and Vernell Bryant Blake. In addition to his father, of Carmi and mother, of Grayville, he is survived by a sister, Lisa Downs of Grayville. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Maddamma.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2000 at the Centerville Cemetery, with Lynda Bryant officiating. Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce French Gulley

Joyce French Gulley, 69, of Grayville, died October 26, 2000 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She was born June 8, 1931 in Grayville, the daughter of Leonard and Agnes McKay Hawkins. She married Arnold French and he preceded her in death on September 26, 1969.

She is survived by her mother of Grayville, one son, Arnold French of Park Ridge and two daughters and sons-in-law, Dixie & Conway Wilson of Crete and Dawn & John Beadles of Carmi; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack & Mary Ann Hawkins of Pennsylvania, Victor & Mabel Hawkins and Mike & Jeanne Hawkins, all of Grayville and one sister, Sue Cowling of Albion; She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Charles Hawkins and two sisters, Rosemary Hughes and Betty Ann Hawkins.

Visitation will be on Saturday, October 28, 2000 from 5-8 p.m. at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Private family services and interment will be held at a later date.

Charles Cecil Clark

Charles Cecil Clark, 72, of Carmi, died Monday morning, November 13, 2000 at the emergency room at White County Hospital. He was born July 25, 1928 in Mill Shoals, the son of Alvay and Lula Mossberger Clark. He married Betty L. York on December 28, 1948 in Carmi and she survives.

Mr. Clark was a retired oil field worker.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles Scott and Karen Sue Clark of Carrier Mills and one daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and Fred Leuellen of Carmi, two grandchildren, Matthew Scott Clark and Heather Page; one great grandchild, Jacob Dillion Page, three brothers and sisters-in-law, Don & Phoebe Clark of Carmi, Rolla Clark and Jerry and Linda Clark of Fairfield, two sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Vaughn of Fairfield and DeLores and George Thomas of Springerton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Buddy Clark and one sister, Wanda Linder.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the Christian Church in Springerton. Burial will be in Hammack Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Guthrie E. Martin

Guthrie E. Martin, 90 of Maunie died Wednesday morning November 15, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born February 22, 1910 at Brownsville the son of Henderson M. and Dora E. (Henson) Martin. He married Eulah C. Tolley on September 24, 1966 and she survives.

He is survived by three daughters and son-in-law, Norma Jean and Sam Smith of Evansville, In, Joyce and Roy Wall of Evansville, and Mary Lou and Larry McGehee of Newburgh, In; two brothers and sister-in-law, Ralph Martin of Norris City, and Donald and Barbara Martin of Mt. Vernon, In, one sister, Oneida Biven of Ponca City, Ok; nine grandchildren, Todd McGehee, Duane Mason, Kenny Mason, Jimmy McGehee, Terry Smith, Larry Smith, Gary Smith, Debra Williams, and Mark Smith; also fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Wilson.

Mr. Martin was a retired pipefitter from Bucyrus in Evansville. He had been a member of the Moose and Eagle’s Lodge in Mt. Vernon, In.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Friday November 17, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Brownsville. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday November 16, 2000 at the funeral home.

Franklin Duckworth

Franklin Duckworth, 85 of Carmi died early Monday morning November 20, 2000 at White County Hospital. He was born March 2, 1915 in Gallatin County, the son of Robert and Stella (Bruce) Duckworth. He married Hazel Buttry on November 16, 1949 at Morganfield, Ky and she survives.

Mr. Duckworth had worked in the oilfield, and retired as an employee for the City of Carmi.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Martha Emmons of Carmi; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Don Southern of Terre Haute, In; four grandchildren, including, Angela and Chris Lueke of Carmi; one great-grandchild, and one sister, Adeline Thompson of Omaha. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Roy, and Tommy Duckworth, and one sister, Susan Rister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday November 22, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery near Brownsville. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday November 21, 2000 at the funeral home.

David Appel

David Appel, 53 of Metarie, Louisiana, died November 14, 2000 at his home. He was born May 8, 1947 in Eldorado, Il., the son of Ray and Kathlene (Hines) Appel.

David was an assistant to the Director of Mental Health at the V.A. Medical Center in Louisiana.

He is survived by his mother Kathlene of Evansville, Indiana.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday November 26, 2000 at Concord Cemetery at Emma, with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating.

The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Juanita L. Johnson

Juanita L. Johnson, 80 of Carmi, died Saturday afternoon November 25, 2000 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, In. She was born August 11, 1920 in Carmi the daughter of H.J. and Grace (Wingate) Harrison. She married Goldie Johnson and he preceded her in death in 1986.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Carmi.

She is survived by one son, Toby Sanders of Carmi. She was preceded in death by two brothers, David Harrison, and Athol Harrison, and one sister, Betty Pierce, and also brothers and sisters in infancy.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday November 28, 2000 at Kuykendall Cemetery. No visitation will be held. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Violet Storey

Violet Storey, 89 of Enfield, died Monday afternoon November 27, 2000 at the Enfield Healthcare Center. She was born March 1, 1911 in rural Carmi the daughter of William and Flora (Kisner) Walters. She married Robert Elcie Storey on October 3, 1931 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on April 9, 1989.

Mrs. Storey was a past president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She was a lifelong and very active member of the Enfield United Methodist Church where for many years she served as Sunday School Teacher and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Ruth Storey of Enfield; twin daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Rev. Everett Gott of Enfield, and Doris and Rev. Vernon Brown of Granite City; thirteen grandchildren and twenty seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Gowdy of Enfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Irma Ward and Ruth Walters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday November 29, 2000 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, or the Memory and Aging Project at Washington University School of Medicine.

Kenneth H. Phelps

Kenneth H. Phelps, 69, of Waterloo, IL, and formerly of Carmi, died at his home on Monday, December 4, 2000. He was born April 16, 1931 in Carmi, the son of Chalon and Opal (Mayberry) Phelps. He married Bernice Turner on April 24, 1953 in Norris City and she survives.

Mr. Phelps was an inspector for United Auto Workers at the Fenton, Missouri Chrysler Plant for 25 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Korea, and receiving the purple heart. He was a member of the Carmi VFW Post 3851.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Keith L. & Denise Phelps of Marissa, Martin W. & Kennaita Phelps of Waterloo, Brian & Rebecca Phelps of Maunie and one daughter, Dana Baxley of Marissa, five grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Eddie & Shirley Phelps of Waterloo, Ralph & Pat Phelps of Broughton, Tommy & JoAnn Phelps of New York, two sisters, Mary Ellen Otton of Waterloo and Judy & Cliff Johnson of Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Perry Dale Phelps.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 7, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2000 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Marshall Ferry Cemetery at Rising Sun.
