Kenneth R. Pettijohn
Kenneth R. Pettijohn, 72 of Carmi died Friday evening February 9, 2001 at his home. He was born June 15, 1928 in Concord, the son of Fred and Flora Belle (Starkey) Pettijohn. He married Jean Hutchison on March 13, 1948 in Emma and she survives.
Mr. Pettijohn had been an oilfield worker, and was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife Jean, three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Ellen Pettijohn of Carmi, Jim R. and Pam Pettijohn of Redbud, and Stephen L. and Debbie Pettijohn of Wooster, Ohio; five grandchildren, Lincoln Pettijohn, Vince Pettijohn, Neil Pettijohn, Nikki Edgell, and Corri Pettijohn; three great-grandchildren, Brenton Pettijohn, and Trevor and Emily Edgell. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Julia and Mary Pettijohn both of Norris City. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Ted Pettijohn, and four sisters, Reba Joyce, Lorene Bloemker, Mildred Sutton, and Ruby Louise Pearce.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday February 12, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Joe Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Omar Lee “Cowboy” Peterson
Omer Lee “Cowboy” Peterson, 91, of Winfield, MO, died February 10, 2001. He was born August 9, 1909 in Ripley County Missouri, the son of Oscar Delbert and Martha Elsba (Wilson) Peterson.
Mr. Peterson grew up in Ripley County and worked as a Constable and in the timber until 1946 when he and his family moved to Holcomb, MO. Omer was the Chief of Police from 1946-1957 in Holcomb and a proud member of the Missouri Police Association. The Peterson family moved to Carmi in 1957, where Omar worked in the oil fields until his retirement, then returned to Missouri. He became a Christian and was baptized at the age of 75. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Ellsinore, MO.
He is survived by his wife, Verda (Bea) Peterson. He is also survived by five children, Mildred Gilpin of Carmi, Marie Provance of Odessa, TX, Ruby Peterson of Sequin, TX, Bobby Joe Peterson of Kennett, MO, and Eva Campbell of St. Charles, MO; five step-sons, Raymond Acord of Kokomo, IN, Charles Acord of Rhode Island, John Acord of Massachusetts, Dutch Acord of Carmi, and George Acord of Mt. Carmel; 6 step-daughters, Gertie Browning, Rosalie Doneghue, Faye Mitchell, Mary Jordan, Vonda Rosignol all of Carmi, and Wilma Martinelli of Rhode Island; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Bell; and his former wife, Thelma Peterson of Kennett, MO.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Georgia Alfreda Peterson; infant daughter, Angela Kay Peterson; step-son, Louie Acord; son-in-law, Jess W. Gilpin; six brothers, Ray, John, Ralph, George, Louie and Lester; three sisters, Minnie Howerton, Erma Washburn and Eulalia Bell; one grandson, Sidney Campbell; and three great-grandchildren, Tonya Gilpin, Trey Ward and Andrew Jackson.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 12, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
Orila A. Stills
Orila Alberta Stills, 85, of Farmington, New Mexico, died Sunday, February 11, 2001 at the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was born July 20, 1915 in Carmi, the daughter of Felix and Bertha Myers. She married Jesse Stills, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Joyce Stills of Abeline, TX, and Keith and Cindy Stills of Farmington, New Mexico; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Gene Longacre of Farmington, New Mexico; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one sister, Louise Hollerbach of Princeton, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.
Visitation will be from 3:00–7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Funeral services will at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery.
Lucile Carney
Lucile Carney, 91, of Carmi, died Tuesday night, February 13, 2001 at the White County Hospital in Carmi. She was born June 25, 1909 in White County, the daughter of Byrd L. and Elsie Mobley Patrick. She married Vernon Carney on November 4, 1928 and he preceded her in death on December 5, 1965.
Mrs. Carney was a member of the Wabash Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution, White County Historical Society, Home Culture Club and the Big Prairie Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and William Kays, Darlean and Gene Garrett, all of Carmi, and Patricia and Chester Burris of California; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Vernon Patrick Carney; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Gus Patrick; and two sisters, Norma Ackerman and LaVanch Gott.
Visitation will be from 12:30-2 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2001. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery.
Hattie R. Renschler
Hattie R. Renschler, 93 of Tucson, Arizona and formerly of Carmi died Saturday afternoon February 17, 2001 in Tucson. She was born March 13, 1907 in Carmi the daughter of Alfred and Lucy (Jackson) Hutchcraft. She married Edwin Renschler on February 3, 1932 and he preceded her in death on November 21, 1990.
She is survived by one daughter-in-law Nellie Hansman of Tucson, AZ, three grandchildren, Larry Hansman, Kelli Kwiatkowski, and Kristi Hansman; six great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; one sister, Verla Munsey of Carmi, two sisters-in-law, Catherine Winter of Carmi and Anna South of Sedalia, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her son Harold L. Hansman, three brothers, Bill, Albert and Norman Hutchcraft, and four sisters, Minnie Cherry, Laura Doerr, Mamie Turner, and Mary Zimmerman.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. till the time of service. Burial will be in the North Maple Ridge Cemetery.
Paul R. Bryant
Paul R. Bryant, 74 of Carmi died Saturday morning March 3, 2001 at Cornerstone White County Hospital in Carmi. He was born July 30, 1926 in Carmi, the son of Clifford and Della Hazel (Mossberger) Bryant.
Mr. Bryant graduated from Carmi High School in 1944. He had worked as an inspector at nuclear plants in California. He had also been a jeweler. He was a United States
Army veteran of WWII having served in Italy.
He is survived by one daughter and son in law, Paula and Tim Oglesby of Ontario, Ca; three grandchildren, and one sister and brother in law, Frances and Bill Thompson of Coronado, Ca.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday March 8, 2001 at North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.
Leonard Eugene “Gene” Reeder
Leonard Eugene “Gene” Reeder, 70 of Carmi died Monday afternoon March 5, 2001 at the Health South Rehabilitation Center in Evansville, IN. He was born August 1, 1930 in Carmi the son of Isaac and Nell (Smock) Reeder. He married Betty Marie Browning on August 3, 1955 in Carmi and she preceded him in death on May 16, 2000.
He was retired from Alcoa and was also a retired staff sergeant from the United States Air Force, having served for 20 years. He was a member of Cherry Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son and daughter in law, Kenneth E. and Donna Reeder of Ft. Branch, In; three daughters and son in law, Deborah L. Harvey of Newburgh, In, Julie A. Reeder of Sandoval, and Kimberly J. and Tim Ward of Dennison; nine grandchildren, and two step grandchildren, Daniel, Mark, Laura, Jon, Genelle, Christopher, Sheena, Kindra, Tori, Brooke and Chad; two sisters in law, Phyllis Browning and Dorothy Barr; nephew and nieces, Doug, Carla, Denise, Danielle and Amber Browning, and Carolyn Dunn. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday March 8, 2001 at Cherry Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the combined veteran units. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday March 7, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Memorials are suggested to the Cherry Street Baptist Church Building Fund.
Reba J. Simpson
Reba J. Simpson, 86 of Enfield died Thursday morning March 15, 2001 at the Enfield Healthcare Center. She was born June 26, 1914 near Enfield, the daughter of William and Nellie (Lee) Jordan. She married Ralph Simpson on October 19, 1938 in Henderson, Ky., and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1999.
Reba attended Trousdale Grade School and Enfield High School where she graduated in 1934. She loved children and babysat many Enfield children and served as a Brownie troop leader. She was a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church and had been a Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by one brother, Lee Jordan of Carmi, one sister and brother in law, Ruby and Terril McChesney of Hayward, Ca.; four nephews and spouses, Richard and Ella Williams of Carmi, Terry Lee and Judy McChesney of Sonora, Ca., Richard and Linda McChesney of Concord, Ca., and Allen and Debbie Jordan of Chino, Ca., one niece and spouse, Judy and Randy Klein of Burlington, Il., and a niece, Gloria Williams of Salado, Tx. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Arthur Jordan, one sister, Esther Williams, and a nephew, Bob Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday March 19, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Memorials are suggested to the Enfield United Methodist Church.
Clarence Arthur Williams
Clarence Arthur Williams, 79 of Plano, TX died Friday March 16, 2001 in Plano. He was the son of Albert Addison and Ada Grace (Daniels) Williams.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Verna (Callicotte) Williams; two daughters, Lauren Lesko of Plano, Tx, and Carla Buchanan of Mission, Kansas; three grandchildren, Alex Lesko, Kathleen Chapman, and Michael Lesko; one brother, Clifford Williams of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David Alan Williams, one sister, Ruth Williams, and one brother, Harrison Williams.
Mr. Williams was a WWII veteran of the United States
Army, he was a retired farmer and had also worked for Emerson Electric in St. Louis. He was a member of the Carmi V.F.W. and American Legion.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday March 22, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday March 21, 2001 at the funeral home.
Clifford E. Edwards
Clifford E. Edwards, 82 of Ft. Meyers, FL died Thursday night in Ft. Meyers. He was born February 15, 1919 in Carmi the son of Edgar and Pearl (Noble) Edwards. He married LaVere Biggerstaff on December 19, 1941 in Charleston, Missouri and she survives.
Mr. Edwards was a retired Rural Letter Carrier. He was the state president of the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers Association and held various other offices for 11 years. He was national president of the Rural Letter Carriers Association and held various other offices for 11 years. He was a WWII veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a longtime member of the Enfield Masonic Lodge, having served as Master and an honorary member of the Carmi Masonic Lodge. He was the present Worthey Patron of the Eastern Star. He was a longtime active member of the Enfield United Methodist Church.
Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife LaVere; one son, Kelly Edwards of McLean, Virginia, a sister-in-law, Lanelle Edwards of Enfield, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Max and Wanda Apple of Enfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Chelsea Edwards, and a nephew, Gary Edwards.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday March 27, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Enfield Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the combined veteran units. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday March 26, 2001 at Kittinger-Fair. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Enfield Senior Citizens, or the Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Charles R. Stephan Sr.
Charles R. Stephan Sr., 65 of Newport, Ky., and formerly of Carmi died early Friday morning March 30, 2001 at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was born April 15, 1935 the son of Norman and Alma (Smiley) Stephan.
Mr. Stephan was a salesman and owned his own company.
He is survived by one daughter Carol Bottonari of Crescent Springs, Ky.; one son, Charles R. Stephan Jr. of Strongsville, Ohio; two brothers, Norman Stephan of St. Charles, Mo, and Roy Stephan of Riverview, Fl. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday April 1, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in White County Memorial Garden. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Homer C. Beck
Homer C. Beck, 84 of Carmi died Sunday afternoon April 8, 2001 at Cornerstone White County Hospital. He was born July 20, 1916 in Enfield, the son of Jacob and Mary (Gates) Beck. He married Pauline A. Botsch on August 10, 1943 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Carmi, and she survives.
Mr. Beck was a lifelong farmer in Hawthorne Township having farmed for nearly 60 years. During WWII he worked in at the shipyards in Evansville, In. He was a member of the White County Farm Bureau. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and when the church closed in 1968, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi.
In addition to his wife Pauline, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carol Beck of Carmi; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Mike Huff, Debra and Jeff Haley, and Kathy and Mark Fridley all of Carmi. Five grandchildren, Jennifer Acord, Brandon Huff, Kara Kessler, Corey Kays, and Todd Haley; three great-grandchildren, Karen Kays, Remi Huff, and Kelsi Kessler; one brother and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Jean Beck of Normal, Evelyn Beck of Carmi, Lucille Beck of Lawrenceville, Florence Beck of Mattoon, and Mary Beck of Norris City. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers, Wilburn, Oscar, Victor, Norman, Ernest, Alvin, Edward, and Robert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday April 11, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi with Reverends Jennifer and Dan Lewis officiating. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday April 10, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi and on Wednesday morning until 10:30 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Carmi.
“Rosie” Frymire
Margaret Roselia “Rosie” Frymire, 72, of Enfield died Thursday afternoon April 12, 2001 at her residence. She was born September 3, 1928 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Cyril Morgan and Katie (Dauby) Biggerstaff. She married John Robert Frymire on January 22, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1967.
She retired from the Enfield Post Office as a Postal Clerk after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Springerton Legion Auxilary. She was also a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Fran Frymire of Enfield and Gene and Cindy Frymire of Henderson, KY; four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Ken Mitsdarffer of Carbondale, Trish and Bob Talley of Norris City, Debbie and Danny Sanders of Mt. Vernon, IL and Ellen and David Tarrant of Enfield; 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Gerald York of Enfield and Betty and Ed Grewe of Mt. Carmel. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Lucille Berberich.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2001at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2001 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Darrel E. Langford
Darrel E. Langford, 89, of Carmi died Monday afternoon April 16, 2001 at the White County Skilled Care Unit. He was born September 27, 1911 in the Wabash Bottoms of White County, the son of Victor and Icey (Hart) Langford. He married Gladys Hargrave on April 14, 1935 in Harrisburg and they just celebrated 66 years of marriage.
Mr. Langford had been a manager at Ainsbrooke for 44 years. He was a lifelong resident of Carmi and graduated from Carmi High School in 1928. He was an avid hunter and dog breeder. He raised and sold English Setters all over the world. He wrote a series of articles of local interest for the Carmi Times. He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Gladys; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Darlene Langford of Melbourne, FL; three grandchildren, David, Donald, and Douglas Langford; five great-grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Ainslie, Andrew, and Zachary Langford; one brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Dorothy Langford of Norris City, and one sister, Iris Sielaff of DesPlaines; also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Murriel Smith, Doris Odegaard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday April 20, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday April 19, 2001 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Thelma I. Coad
Thelma I. Coad, 90, of Grayville died Saturday morning April 21, 2001 at White County Hospital Skilled Care Unit. She was born September 20, 1910 in White County the daughter of James F. and Emily (Lechner) Bond. She was married to Edward Coad on August 23, 1933, and he preceded her in death in 1990.
She was a member of a family widely known in the Grayville area for many years. After her husband Edward retired from farming, they moved to Carmi. She loved to watch and feed the finches. She had many feeders hanging outside her kitchen window.
She is survived by four nieces and nephews and their spouses, J. Milton and Shirley Wood of Albion, Carol and Otis Brach of Fairfield, Fred and Elvira Bond of Fairfield, and Marilyn and Kent Lewis of Louisville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Herbert, “Bud” Bond.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday April 23, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery at Grayville. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Skilled Care Unit at the hospital.
Chester E. Taylor
Chester E. Taylor, 81, formerly of Crossville, died early Tuesday morning, April 24, 2001 at White County Skilled Care. He was born September 2, 1919 in Brownsville, the son of Lawrence L. and Josephine (Wilson) Taylor. He married Viola Garner on March 19,1958 in Crossville and she preceded him in death on September 20, 1990.
Mr. Taylor was a WWII
Army veteran. He was a life-long farmer in the Crossville and Garnerville area. He was a beekeeper, raising up to 120 hives of honeybees. He was a member of Crossville Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by 2 sisters Effie Holleman of Carmi and Cora Lindon of Crossville; nieces & nephews and their spouses, Ray & Roy Holleman of Carmi, Dwight & Debbie Wilson of Crossville, Robert & Kris Lindon of Naperville, Delores & Larry Harter of Mechanicsburg, Mary & Gary Cates of Carmi, Donna & Ken Reeder of Ft. Branch, In, Denise & Larry Burnett of Crossville, and Maryetta Taylor of Carmi. Also survived by several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Burrell Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at the funeral home.
James Powell
James Powell, 69 of Carmi, died Tuesday afternoon May 8, 2001 at North Park Nursing Center in Evansville. He was born February 18, 1932 in Hickory Plains, Arkansas the son of Henry and Minnie Powell.
He is survived by one brother, Willard Powell of Missouri.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday May 10, 2001 at Bruce Chapel Cemetery near Carmi. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
