Inez Mary Ritcheson
Inez Mary Ritcheson, 87, of Carmi died Wednesday evening May 16, 2001 at her home. She was born July 29, 1913 in Dale, the daughter of John and Henretta (Griffith) Biggerstaff. She married Roy Ritcheson June 4, 1930 at Enfield, and he preceded her in death October 17, 1988.
Mrs. Ritcheson was a retired seamstress and worked many years for Ainsbrook. She was a charter member of the Church of God in Carmi.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Paul Fishback and Mary Ann and Arnold Vaughan, all of Carmi; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Nieces and nephews also survive. Eleven brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday May 19, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday May 18, 2001 at the funeral home.
Dortha L. Hutchison
Dortha L. Hutchison, 78 of Norris City, died Thursday evening May 31, 2001 at Herrin Hospital in Herrin. She was born December 27, 1922 in Norris City the daughter of Owen and Nellie (Green) McArthy. She was married to Barney Hutchison on January 4, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO and he preceded her in death on March 14, 1990.
Mrs. Hutchison was a homemaker and member of the Crossroads Bible Church in Norris City.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Ray & Roberta Hutchison of Benton, Donald W. & Patricia Hutchison of Carmi and Garry G. Hutchison of Keller, TX; three daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley D. Mooney of West Frankfort, Kathryn Harrelson of Hurst, TX and Peggy J. & Jerry Denison of West Frankfort; thirteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one sister Eathel Yeates of Magnolia, TX and a special cousin, Eleanor Moran of Norris City. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert McArthy and three sisters, Lea Simmons, Viva McArthy and Lorene Viser.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2001 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Norris City. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Old Sharon Church Cemetery in Norris City.
Willema W. Maier
Willema W. Maier, 86 of Carmi, died Friday morning June 1, 2001 at the Skilled Care Unit of Cornerstone White County Hospital. She was born September 18, 1914 in Crossville, the daughter of Howard and Lena (Finch) Higginson. She married William W.E. “Bill” Maier on July 31, 1938 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on September 15, 1989.
Mrs. Maier was a homemaker. She graduated from Crossville High School in 1932. She had been active in the White County Republican Women’s Group.
She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Barbara Maier of Carmi; one son, Bill Maier of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Luke and Nathan Maier; one brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Nola Higginson of Nokomis, FL, and one sister, Wanda Madding of Lakeland, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister, Winnie Dean O’Neal.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday June 3, 2001 at Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. No visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
Leo Appel
Leo Appel, 86 of Enfield, died Thursday evening June7, 2001 at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. He was born May 26, 1915 in Broughton, the son of Peter and Martha May (Stilts) Appel. He first married Ruby Nicholson and she preceded him in death on April 19, 1986. He then married Marguerite V. Welton Rhoads on September 17, 1988 and she survives.
Mr. Appel was a life-time farmer. He was a member and past president of the White County Farm Bureau, an active member of the Gideon Society. He had served on the Ohio Valley Livestock Producers boards for 12 years both the tri-state and national organization and was a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite and one son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Marilyn Appel of Enfield; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Larry & Linda Rhoads of Mt. Vernon, IN and a step-daughter and son-in-law, Nina & Carlos Haskins of Evansville; three grandchildren, Marla, Megan & Jarrod Appel, four step-grandchildren, Holly, David, Mark & Susan; one step-great-grandchild; one sister, Rose Appel of Enfield, a sister-in-law, Vernice Appel of Enfield and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Hubert, Ralph, Edward & Paul and four sisters, Ann Irwin, Lucy Ellen Thompson, Ruth Satterfield and Cleo May Keller.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2001 at the Enfield Methodist Church with Burial at the Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield.
Geraldine “Jerry” Hurt
Geraldine “Jerry” Hurt, 82 of Maunie, died Thursday evening June 14, 2001 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born January 24, 1919 in Evansville, the daughter of Edward and Florence (Deavers) Sefried. She was married to William Leonard Hurt and he preceded her in death on February 28, 1985.
Mrs. Hurt is survived by one son, Bill Sefried of Dallas, Texas; nieces, Doris E. Bivin, Shirley Elliott, and Ann Cole of Evansville, Pat Kinney of Hawaii, and Myna McDaniel of Rincon, Puerto Rico; one nephew, Bill Embree of Rincon, Puerto Rico. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters, Henrietta Rowe and Jessie McCann.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday June 18, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Marshall Ferry Cemetery at Rising Sun. The family will meet friends one hour prior to funeral services at the funeral home.
Fred A. Davis
Fred A. Davis, of Carmi, died Friday evening June 15, 2001 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, IN. He was born in Corinth, Mississippi, the son of Charles W. and Jessie (Sanders) Davis.
Mr. Davis had worked for the railroad for 30 years before retirement. He was a United States Navy veteran of the
Korean War and attended the Church of God in Carmi.
Mr. Davis is survived by one sister, Lorean Wohlhueter of Madisonville, Ky.; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and ten brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday June 19, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Big Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday June 18, 2001 at the funeral home.
Glen E. Murphy, Sr.
Glen E. Murphy, Sr.,58, of Carmi, died Saturday evening, June 16, 2001 at his home.
He was born May 11, 1943 in Mt. Vernon, IL, the son of Carroll and Bertha (Schmittler) Murphy. He married Phyllis Allison on October 19, 1963 in Fairfield and she survives.
He retired after 30 years with Caterpiller in Joliet, where he was a millwright and maintenance worker. He belonged to the Gardner Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Church of God in Grayville.
In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by his mother Bertha of Carmi; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Dwayne & Camille Murphy of Romeoville, Glen Murphy, Jr. of Dwight and Jerry Murphy of Carmi; one daughter and son-in-law, Carmen & Tony Telin of Dwight; six grandchildren, Michelle Telin, Mandi Telin, Ashley Murphy, Alaina Murphy, Dwayne Murphy Jr. and Michael Murphy Lylar; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles & Robin Murphy of Mill Shoals and Carl & Cheryl Murphy of Raytown, MO; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Carol Ackley of Lansing, MI and Sheila & Richard Clodfelter of Harrison, MI, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday June 19, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday June 18, 2001 at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Joseph A. Garrett
Joseph A. Garrett, 93 of Carmi died Wednesday evening June 27, 2001 at the Carmi Skilled Care Unit. He was born December 21, 1907 the son of John C. And Stella (Hensch) Garrett. He married Alda Potter June 17, 1947 and she preceded him in death on July 25, 1996.
Mr. Garrett owned and operated a service station in Indianapolis, IN for 30 years, after retirement he and his wife returned to Carmi. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Indianapolis. He was a veteran of the United States
Army, having served with the 5th Armored Division. He was a member of the Carmi American Legion Post #224, and V.F.W. Post #3851. He was a member of Cherry Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Darlean Garrett of Carmi, two sisters, Lucille Carter and Helen Daily of Carmi; one granddaughter Leah Brashear of Oklahoma City, Ok.; son-in-law, Ed Brashear of Oklahoma City, Ok.; two nieces, one nephew, seven great nieces and nephews, and two great-great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and step-daughter, Jean Brashear
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday June 29, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Gary Nalley officiating. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Rev. Michael Maughan, S.M.A.
Rev. Michael Maughan, S.M.A., 83, died Monday, July 2, 2001 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, IL. He was born October 2, 1917 in Ireland, the son of Thomas and Kate (Gibbons) Maughan.
Fr. Maughan was ordained by the Most Reverend Magean of Down and Connor on December 19, 1943. He first served as a Missionary in Nigeria, West Africa from 1944-1950. He served in the New York Archdiocese from 1951-1953, and the Philadelphia Archdiocese from 1953-1958. He then served many churches in the Belleville Diocese including, St. Mary Parish, East St. Louis, Equality/Stonefort and Tipton/Maddonaville. Fr. Maughan came to St. Patrick’s in Enfield, where he had served as its Pastor from 1980 until his retirement in 1997.
He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter & Bridie Maughan of Coventry, England, Christopher & Bridie Maughan of Kildare, Ireland, Francis & Eileen of Galway, Ireland and one sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen & James Mannion of Mayo, Ireland. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Kate Maughan.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday July 6, 2001 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield with the Very Reverend Ulich Bourke S.M.A., Principal Celebrant and The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory as Homilist. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday July 5, 2001 at the church and from 8 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass on Friday. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in the Priests section of the Church Cemetery.
Mabel Clair Smythe
Mabel Clair Smythe, 88, of Enfield died Thursday afternoon July 5, 2001 at her home. She was born January 24, 1913 in Calhoun, Ky., the daughter of Edgar Rufus and Callie Belle (Jarnagin) Wall. She married Foster L. Smythe on July 20, 1946 in Belleville and he preceded her in death on January 20, 1988.
Mrs. Smythe had worked at the Survell Aircraft Company in Evansville, In. during WWII. She had also worked at Sears. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She was a member of Enfield First Christian Church.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Patty Jo Smythe of Enfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gil Rhoades of Newburgh, In.; one step-son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Gretta Smythe of Newburgh, In.; one step-daughter, Mary Jeanette Smythe of Columbia, Mo.; four granddaughters, Taryn Clair Fleming-Johns, Kristin Michelle Smythe, Tracee Nicole Fleming, and Lauren Janae Smythe; two grandsons, Kody James Steed, and Brandon Foster Smythe. Her parents, husband, two brothers, and three sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday July 8, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday July 7, 2001 at the funeral home.
Sarrah E. Veatch
Sarrah E. Veatch, of Maunie, died Sunday afternoon, July 22, 2001 at the White County Skilled Care Unit. She was born on March 30, 1913 in Sikeston, MO, the daughter of William and Ida Mae (Simmons) Hamblin. She married Willard M. Veatch in 1929 in Mt. Vernon, IN and he preceded her in death on June 10, 1985.
Mrs. Veatch was a member of the Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church and a member of Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and Mildred Veatch of Riverside, CA and Robert L. and Betty Veatch of San Jacinto, CA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and John Hardeman of Riverside, CA and Doris E. and Billy Barnett of San Jacinto, CA, nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, Sam and Carl Hamblin and one sister, Hazel Douthitt.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Marshall Ferry Cemetery at Rising Sun.
Marvin H. Dozier
Marvin H. Dozier, 81, of Springerton died Sunday morning August 19, 2001 at the Enfield Healthcare Center. He was born on July 1, 1920 in White County, the son of Everett and Avaline (Reever) Dozier. He married Mary Kathryn Leathers on August 13, 1938 in Morganfield, Kentucky and they just celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Mr. Dozier was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation with the Highway Maintenance Dept. He was also a self-employed trucker, farmer and construction worker. He served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1944-1946. He attended Springerton Methodist Church and was a member of the Springerton American Legion and the Carmi VFW. He enjoyed animals and was an avid quail hunter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Joan Dozier of Enfield, two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Don Poore of Springerton and Cheryl & Paul Cameron of Carmi; four grandchildren, Don Poore, Jr., Stewart Poore, Tonya and Scott Smith; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; six brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Wave Dozier of Mill Shoals, Ralph and Betty Dozier of Fairfield, Lawrence and June Dozier of Springerton, Lloyd and Ellie Dozier of Walla Walla, WA, Kenny and Barb Dozier of Seattle, WA, Carroll and Reva Dozier of Burnt Prairie, one sister Beulah Dozier of Fairfield, one sister-in-law, Zella Dozier of Burley, Idaho, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Dozier.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springerton Cemetery where military graveside rites will be held.
Edgar R. Lytle
Edgar R. Lytle, 71, of Carmi, died Sunday morning, August 26, 2001 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born April 30, 1930 in Gibson County, Indiana, the son of Edison Ray and Thelma Louise (Pyle) Lytle.
Mr. Lytle worked for many years in the oilfields. He loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He is survived by one son, Ray Lytle of New Orleans, Louisiana; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Lynn Simmons of Enfield, Tonya and Kelley Vaupel of Carmi, and Angie and Mike Pfister of Arthur; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Harris of Evansville and Marietta House of North Little Rock, Arkansas; two half brothers, Johnnie Lytle and Ronnie Lytle both of Malvern, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Max, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday August 28, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with graveside rites at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Mt. Olympus, Indiana. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Violet Garner
Violet Garner, 96, of Crossville, died Tuesday evening, August 28, 2001 at the
Carmi Skilled Care Unit. She was born February 1, 1905 in White County, the daughter of Frank and Ella (Sell) Hatcher. She married Henry T. Garner on September 12, 1923 in Maunie and he preceded her in death on April 25, 1987.
Mrs. Garner was a homemaker. She was a member of the Phillipstown Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Henry C. and Joan Garner of Crossville, and John R. Garner of Godfrey; three daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Jim McCorkle of Browns, Ellamae Clark of Eldorado, and Betty Lou and Dale Stabler of Lakeland, FL; one daughter-in-law, Vona Garner of Crossville; one sister, Zola Kilmer of Greenville and 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles F. Garner, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 31, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery.
Cindy K. Hoy
Cindy K. Hoy, 39, of Carmi died early Wednesday morning August 29, 2001 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. She was born January 22, 1962 in Tucson, AZ, the daughter of Charles and Nancy (Smith) Davis. She married James Hoy on May 7, 1983 in Carmi and he survives.
She was employed by Trelleborg.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Nancy Davis of St. Louis, MO; 2 daughters, Crystal Hoy and Samantha Hoy at home; 2 step-sons, James Hoy of Carmi and Scott Hoy of Poseyville, IN; 3 brothers, Charles Davis, Jr. of Arnold, MO, James Davis of St. Louis, MO and Ronald Davis of Perryville, MO; and 1 sister, Peggy Kennedy of St. Louis, MO; and 1 grandchild, Madison Hoy. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.
Nellie Loraine Buckner
Nellie Loraine Buckner, 85, of Enfield, died Saturday morning, September 8, 2001 at the Hamilton Memorial Nursing Home in McLeansboro. She was born November 20, 1915 in Jasper County, IL, the daughter of William and Clarissa (Newell) Dow. She married Jacob Anderson Buckner on May 18, 1938 and he preceded her in death on September 30, 1992.
Mrs. Buckner was a homemaker. She had been very active in Senior Citizens activities and the Enfield Christian Church, where she was a member.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William Anderson and Jeanette Buckner of Virginia, Charles Edward and Betty Buckner of McLeansboro, and Robert Joseph and Charlotte Buckner of Michigan City, IN; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Twyla Williams and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery.
Georgia P. Duke
Georgia P. Duke, 71 of New Haven died Tuesday afternoon September 11, 2001 at her home. She was born March 23, 1930 in Carmi, the daughter of John and Pearl (Winters) Graves.
Georgia had worked in the USDA Office in Carmi.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Henry “Butch” Dunn of New Haven; five grandchildren, Chera Hall, Marty Phelps, Clinton Dunn, Adam Dozier and Amy Dozier, and 6 great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Lowell Warren of Enfield; and 4 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Morgan.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2001 at the Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
