Doris A. Owings
Doris A. Owings, 66, of Enfield died Tuesday evening, September 11, 2001 at her home. She was born March 7, 1935 in Enfield, the daughter of Virgil I. and Christina (Barton) Newman. She married Thomas Owings on May 5, 1950 in Enfield and he survives.
Mrs. Owings was a self-employed hairdresser operating in her home for nearly 30 years. She was a member of the Enfield General Baptist Church and had been an active volunteer at the Enfield Healthcare Center. She was also the finest mother in the world and loved her family and grandchildren deeply.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Gene & Robbie Owings of Enfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie Lynn & Joe Allen of Enfield and Vonnie Lee & Leroy Farris of McLeansboro; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, James & Pat Newman of Enfield; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Virgie & Max Foley of Newburgh, IN and Kathryne & Don Woodrow of McLeansboro. She was preceded in death by one brother, Gene Newman.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2001 at the Enfield General Baptist Church. Mrs. Owings will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery.
“Lizzie” Huffaker
Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Huffaker, 95 of Enfield, died Tuesday afternoon September 18, 2001 at the Enfield Healthcare Center. She was born September 3, 1906 in Hamilton County the daughter of Leealvia and Nettie (Bowen) Savage. She married Henry Huffaker on November 19, 1932 in Mill Shoals and he preceded her in death on December 4, 1986.
She and her husband Henry didn’t have children of their own but opened their doors to many children throughout their years together.
She is survived by two sisters, Fay Poore and Fern Savage both of McLeansboro, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Clifford, Everett and an infant and four sisters, Beulah Martin, Lola Craddock, Flora Darnell, and Margaret Savage.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday September 21, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.
Ruby W. Gowdy
Ruby W. Gowdy, 93 of Enfield, died Friday evening September 28, 2001 at the Columbia Healthcare Nursing Home in Evansville. She was born December 10, 1907 in White County, the daughter of William A. and Flora (Kisner) Walters. She married James “J” Bert Gowdy and he preceded her in death.
She was a seamstress. She was also a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church and of Eastern Star.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Mary Beth Gowdy of Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Violet Storey, Ruth Walters and Irma Ward.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at the Enfield Cemetery in Enfield. Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield is in charge of arrangements.
Viola Gunter
Viola Gunter, 90 of Enfield died Saturday morning September 29, 2001 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born July 16, 1911 in rural Enfield, the daughter of Phillip and Clara (Gwaltney) Newman. She married Harold Gunter on April 6, 1932 in Enfield and he preceded her in death on February 7, 1981.
Mrs. Gunter had worked in the cafeteria at Booth School in Enfield for several years. She had been a member of Seven Mile Christian Church and attended the Enfield General Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Carolyn Gunter of Enfield; three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Max Medlin of Carmi, Gloria and Clayton Campbell of Enfield, and Kay and Phil Huffer of Enfield; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alpha Hankins of Enfield and Agnes Metcalf of LaPorte, Indiana. She was preceded in death by one son, Harold Kenneth Gunter, one daughter, Peggy Joyce Gunter, one brother, Frank Newman and one sister, Reba Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday October 1, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Imogene Harl
Imogene Harl, 77 of Springerton, died Tuesday October 2, 2001 at the White County Skilled Care Unit in Carmi. She was born January 29, 1924 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Eldon and Hallie (Carter) Rankin. She married Carl Harl in July 1941 in Cape Girardo, MO and he survives.
Mrs. Harl was a homemaker. She was a member of the Community of Christ (RLDS) Church in Springerton.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Donna Harl of Geff, two grandchildren and their spouses, Billy and Tammy Harl, Jr. of Springerton and Beverly and John Mead of McLeansboro, four great-grandchildren, Brian, Brittany and Bethany Harl and Sarah Mead, and one brother and sister-in-law, Truman and Imogene Rankin of Omaha, IL and one sister-in-law, Bernita Rankin Thompson of Enfield. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Rankin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the Community of Christ (RLDS) Church in Springerton, with Burial in Hammock Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour before the service. There will be no visitation. Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield is in charge of arrangements.
Stella Mae Edman
Stella Mae Edman, 91, of Carmi, died Wednesday morning, October 17, 2001 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born September 17, 1910 in Mt. Carmel, the daughter of Benjamin and Alpha (Smith) Chilton. She married Frank Stroup “Babe” Edman on May 24, 1933 in Carmi and he preceded her in death in 1983.
Mrs. Edman was a Dietary worker at the Carmi Township Hospital before her retirement, though her most loved profession was being the best grandmother in the whole world. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and James Kelley of Evansville, four grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Brad Roe, Sherri and Brett Ward, Julie Edman and Kenneth Edman all of Carmi, four great-grandchildren, Cassandra Ward, Mitch Roe, Danielle Edman and Tess Edman, and one daughter-in-law, Ann Edman of Carmi; she was preceded in death by three sons, Frank Eugene, Ivan Edward and Donald Ray Edman and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel Cemetery in Crossville.
Jessie Faye Hinton
Jessie Faye Hinton, 87 of Carmi, died early Saturday morning October 27, 2001 at the Skilled Care Unit in Carmi. She was born August 14, 1914 in Maunie, the daughter of Luther and Lucy (Newcomb) Welch. She married Lester E. Hinton and he preceded her in death on February 2, 1984.
She had been a seamstress at Ainsbrooke. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Carmi.
She is survived by two nephews, Charles Wicker and Eugene Wicker of Evansville, one niece, Edna Faye Craft of Evansville, and several great nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Sue Frazier of Carmi. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two sisters, Irene Watson and Marie Wicker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 29, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Robby King officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Phillipstown Cemetery.
Beatrice “Bea” Renshaw
Beatrice “Bea” Renshaw, 74, of Carmi, died Wednesday afternoon, October 31, 2001 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She was born April 4, 1927 in New York the daughter of Joseph and Mary Cameron. She married Ray Renshaw on February 3, 1963 in McLeansboro and he survives.
Mrs. Renshaw was a registered nurse and a member of the First Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband Ray; her mother-in-law, Leota Renshaw of Carmi; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Ann and Joe Brumett of Orange, Virginia and Marilyn Clark of Indian Hills, Florida; six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday November 3, 2001 at Kuykendall Cemetery with Rev. Ron Lamp officiating. The family requests no flowers but memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Visiting Nurses Association, or the donor’s choice. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
William Allison Puckett
William Allison Puckett, 68 of Anna and formerly of Carmi died Saturday afternoon November 10, 2001 in Anna.
He was born November 2, 1933 in Carmi the son of John E. and Margaret Louise (Allison) Puckett.
Mr. Puckett obtained a BA in Marketing from Evansville College. He had been the manager of Old National Bank in Evansville. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the First Christian Church in Carmi.
He is survived by his father John of Carmi, a sister and brother-in-law, Janis and Walt Theurer of Evansville, and one niece, Jilli Worth of Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Private family services were held at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, with Robby King officiating. Members of the combined veteran units of the Carmi American Legion Post #224 and V.F.W. Post #3851 served as pallbearers. Burial was in Bruce Chapel Cemetery.
Marietta Endicott Henson
Marietta Endicott Henson, 83, of Carmi, died Wednesday morning, November 21, 2001 at her home. She was born May 16, 1918 in Crossville, the daughter of Leslie David “Les” and Mary Elizabeth (Spencer) Endicott, Sr. She married Ronald Maier in 1942 and he lost his life in 1946, while serving in the US Air Force. She then married Gerald C. “Jerry” Henson on October 7, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 30, 1995.
Marietta graduated from Crossville High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carmi. She also belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a long-time employee at the Mar-Lee dress shop and Beans Jewelry. She retired as a bookkeeper for Harry Phil Pearce.
She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Wetzel of Princeton, IN and Marjorie Kell of Carmi; one sister-in-law, Mary Endicott of Norris City; one nephew and his wife, Larry & Marilyn Kell of San Antonio, TX; three nieces and their husbands, Linda Wetzel & Bob Kiessel of Ft. Branch, IN, Cindy Endicott & Alan Levingston of Howell, MI, and Ann Kell of El Cajon, CA; 7 great nephews & nieces and 2 great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, L.D. “Junior” Endicott and Charles Leo Endicott and one nephew, Jack Kell.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Nic Showalter officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2001 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Carmi or the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Larry Sheckles
Larry Ray Sheckles, 50 of Crossville, died early Thursday morning December 6, 2001 at his residence. He was born on July 11, 1951 in Illinois, the son of James V. “Heavy” and Ella (Vincent) Sheckles, Sr. He married Cerissa James on August 10, 1973 in Carmi and she survives.
Mr. Sheckles was employed by Snap On Tools. He was an avid fisherman and had a deep love for his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Cerissa; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James W. and Annamarie Sheckles and Christopher Sheckles of Crossville; two grandchildren, Mersadiez Y. and Malichie Seth; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James V. and Wanda Sheckles of Carmi and T.J. and Debbie Sheckles of Crossville; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Geneva Graham, Irvia and Julius James, Paula and Monty Madamma, Freda Mercer, all of Carmi, and Regina and David Holman of Bow, KY; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jack Sheckles and three sisters, two in infancy and Janet Sue Sheckles.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Jerry Crawford officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2001 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Powell Cemetery in Norris City.
Lillian L. “PeeWee” Greer
Lillian L. “PeeWee” Greer, 70 of Carmi died Thursday afternoon December 13, 2001 at White County Medical Center.
She was born November 9, 1931 in Carmi, the daughter of Joseph S. and Robbie L. (Cook) Greer.
Miss Greer worked for 28 years at Ainsbrooke, then at the Carmi Motel Restaurant kitchen. She was a member of the Kingdom Baptist Church.
She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Dallas McClurken of Carmi; one brother William E. Greer of Chicago and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Henderson and Norbert Greer and three sisters, Hazel M. Thomas, Velma R. Pretzsch and Inez Dean.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Kingdom Cemetery.
Doris Paula Edmunds
Doris Paula Edmunds, 64 of Friendsville, Tennessee and formerly of rural Norris City, Illinois died Saturday afternoon December 15, 2001 at her home in Friendsville.
She was born September 17, 1937 in Jerseyville, Illinois the daughter of Paul and Virginia Berthoux. She married Gerald W. “Gerry” Edmunds on October 25, 1958 and he preceded her in death on May 3, 1997.
Mrs. Edmunds was a graduate of Alton Memorial School of Nursing, in Alton, IL. She worked at various hospitals in the Alton area, and later worked for Dr. Jean Samaan in Houston, TX. She is dearly missed by all those that knew her, and in our hearts we know she is at peace with Gerry, David and God.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Paula Jill and Marion T. Moore, two granddaughters, Virginia Lynn Moore and Mary Elizabeth Moore all of Friendsville, TN; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Duane and Ann Berthoux of Fairfield, CA, Dann Berthoux of St. Louis, Mo and Kate Berthoux of Springfield, IL; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Philip Shelton of Yardley, PA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Paul Johns of Herald, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, David W. Edmunds and two brothers, Darel and Dale Berthoux.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday December 19, 2001 at the Union Ridge Presbyterian Church near New Haven with Rev. Creighton Hampton officiating. Wilburn “Web” Dauby
Wilburn “Web” Dauby, age 77, of Enfield, passed away Friday, February 20, 2009, at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born September 29, 1931 in Enfield, the son of Andrew and Edith (Biggerstaff) Dauby.
Wilburn had worked at the telephone company and farmed until his retirement. He was a
Korean War veteran and a member of the Carmi VFW. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Enfield.
He is survived by a sister and a brother-in-law, Mildred and Bill Aker of Carmi; one sister-in-law, Ruth Dauby of W. Lafayette, IN; one brother-in-law, Gilbert Karcher of Princeton, IN; a niece and her husband, Carla and Jerry McCormick of Carmi and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special friend Anna Louise Dennis of Enfield.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bernard Dauby, and two sisters, Mary Florence Karcher, and Clara Josephine Dauby.
A funeral mass will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Enfield. Interment will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery. military rites will be provided by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. A prayer service will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009, at 4:45 pm at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will follow, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Norman A. Gwaltney
Norman A. Gwaltney, 71, of Carmi, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009, at his home. He was born August 27, 1937, in Peoria, IL, the son of Wilburn and Jewel (Dailey) Gwaltney. He married Doris ( Sanders) Blades on February 4, 1994, in Henderson, KY, and she survives. He worked at Babcock and Wilcox in Mt Vernon, IN for fourteen years. He held many other positions throughout his life. He liked to fish and loved to talk. He never met a stranger. He was a member of New Beginning Church of God in Carmi.
He is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kim Gwaltney of Carmi, and Michael Gwaltney and Cam Abascal of Orlando, FL; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tom Englgau of Victoria, TX, and Jane and Travis Allen of Norris City; three step-grandchildren, Christina (Mark) Frymire of Norris City, Erica (David) Dowell of Lebanon, TN, and Christopher Hargrave of Newburgh, IN; and three step-great-grandchildren, Matt Frymire and Adrienne Frymire, both of Norris City, and Alexa Dowell of Lebanon, IN.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Barbara.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. On Wednesday February 11, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi with Burial at North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Ray Evans
Ray Evans, 72, of Carmi, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN. He was born October 26, 1936, in Butler County, KY, the son of Clifton and Maxine (Ralph) Evans. He married Cleta F. Lowry on June 13, 1958, in Shawneetown, IL.
He served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean conflict. His family was his life; the oilfield was his occupation. He loved to fish and play video games. He was strong in faith and loved the Lord. He was a member of Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Cleta F.; four sons, Gary (Margaret) Duvall of St. Louis, MO, Leon (Theresa) Duvall of Carmi, Mark Evans of Carmi, and Wesley (Carolyn) Evans of Carmi; A daughter, Victoria (Lonnie) Price of Kansas City, MO; ten grandchildren, Steven Duvall and Susan Duvall, both of St. Louis, MO, Robert (Maleah) Duvall, USMC, of California, Sandra (Charles) Siegel of Evansville, IN, Misty (Josh) Egbert of Carmi, Steven (Elisabeth) Evans of Carmi, Christina (Bill) Jordan of Georgetown, IL, Caleb Campbell and Josh Campbell, both of Carmi, and Cliff Goff of Carmi; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Evans; and a son, Larry Ray Duvall.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 8, 2009, at 2:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Marshall Ferry Cemetery with military rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Phoenix Foundation.
Frances Graves
Frances Graves, 86, of Carmi, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born September 3, 1922 in Clay City, IL, the daughter of Eugene and Myrle (Cowling) Mayden. She married J.L. “Chick” Graves on June 9, 1951 in Crossville, IL, and he preceded her. She worked at GTE for almost 38 years. She was Carmi City Clerk from 1981 until 1989. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and playing the organ. For the past five years, Frances had made her home at Wabash Christian Retirement Center Memory Unit.
She is survived by several cousins, and a close friend, Bill Pierson and his family, Larry and Paula Pierson and family of Carmi, and Stella Wolf and her family of Evansville, IN, who were like family to her and she to them.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a sister, Juanita O'Brien.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 11:00 am, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until time of service. Interment will take place in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center Memory Unit.
