Marguerite Rhoads Appel

After a long illness, Marguerite Rhoads Appel passed away on January 22, 2009, at the Enfield Healthcare Center at the age of 90. Marguerite was born Marguerite Virginia Welton in Charleston, IL, on July 13, 1918, the daughter of Homer A. and Lela Gertrude (Childress) Welton. She married Vernie (Muddy) Rhoads on October 21, 1939 and made their home in Casey, IL. Their early married life took them to Mt. Vernon, IL, Benton, IL, and finally to Enfield, IL in early 1946 where Marguerite lived the remainder of her life.

Marguerite worked many years at the Carmi township Hospital as a nurse's aid, had been a member of the Federation of Women's clubs through the Enfield Opportunity Club, a member of the Daughters of Egypt Rebekah Lodge No. 357, and a member of the Carmi Township Hospital “Walking Blood Bank.”

Marguerite is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Allen and Linda Rhoads, of Mt. Vernon, IN; a daughter and son-in-law, Nina Kay and Carlos Haskins, of Evansville, IN; one grandson, Mark Allen Rhoads, of Mt. Vernon, IN; two granddaughters and their husbands, Holly Bryanna and Travis Smith, of Hayes, VA, and Susan Nicole and Aaron Tucker, of Mt. Vernon, IN; a great-granddaughter, Nicole Eryn Tucker, and a great-grandson, Carson Neal Tucker, both of Mt. Vernon, IN; a step-granddaughter and her husband, Janice Rachel and Brad Shively of Marietta, GA; a step-great-grandson, Michael Dean Shively, and a step-great-granddaughter, Keira Judith Shively, both of Marietta, GA.

Marguerite is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 32 years, Vernie (Muddy) Rhoads; a daughter, Brenda Jean Rhoads; a grandson, David Scott Rhoads; and a second husband, Leo Appel.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 25, 2009, at 5:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. A visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until the time of service in the chapel. Burial will be at the Washington Street Cemetery in Casey, IL , on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Donations may be made to Enfield Healthcare Center Activities Fund. A special thanks to their staff for the kindness and care.

Walter L. Puckett

Walter L. Puckett, age 95, of Mill Shoals, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at his home peacefully with family by his side. He was born April 1, 1913, the son of Elmer and Pearl (Locke) Puckett. He always joked with his family that he was the oldest living resident of Mill Shoals, but he was ready to go.

Walter was united in marriage to Viola (Gwaltney) Puckett on February 29, 1936 in Benton, IL, and she preceded him on November 8, 2008. Together, they had 11 children, 29 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Surviving are seven sons, Gerald (Sue) Puckett of Grand Blanc, MI, John (Becky) Puckett of Mill Shoals, IL, Dallas (Norma) Puckett of Hillsboro, OH, Harold (Linda) Puckett of Arlington, TX, Norman (Nancy) Puckett of Carmi, IL, Arnold (Debra) Puckett of Paducah, KY, and Keith (Becky) Puckett of Fairfield, IL, three daughters; Barbara (Leroy) Waggoner of Marion, IL, Janet (Jim) Hanson of Murphysboro, IL, and Teresa Griffith of Breese, IL, one brother, Fred Puckett of Olney one sister, Lucy Keeney of CA; two sisters-in-law; Velma Ellis of Enfield, IL, and Vercia (Emerson) Daniels of Norris City, IL; and one brother-in-law, Charles L (Mildred) Gwaltney of Carmi, IL; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Counting his grandchildren, he had 82 living descendants; and leaves a rich Christian Heritage.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Hubert Puckett; two grandsons, one sister, Marjorie Greenwood, and five brothers-in-law, Russell Keeney, Ralph Metcalf, Ernie Greenwood, Vernis Ellis, and Carl W. Shaw.

Mr. Puckett was a lifelong member and elder of the Ashland Christian Church near Mill Shoals; and his first love was telling others about Jesus, how they could become a Christian and go to Heaven. One of his achievements was graduating from SIU Carbondale with a Master's degree even though he had to hitchhike several miles back and forth to his farm in Mill Shoals. He took pride in being a school teacher, who taught 41 years and was White County Superintendent of Schools for four years. He also took pride in farming even before and after school. He retired from farming at age 80; but remained a loyal Republican precinct committeeman in the community. His family, and family gatherings were always very important to him!

A memorial service, a celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Friends may visit on Saturday, January 24, 2009, from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ashland Christian Church near Mill Shoals, and may be accepted at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home.

Anne F. Fyie

Anne F. Fyie, 84, of Evansville, IN and formerly of Springerton, IL passed away Monday, January 12, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansvile. She was born February 24, 1924, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Ilnich) Kunich. She married Vincent Fyie on April 18, 1945 in Joliet, IL and he survives.

Anne was the beloved wife of Vince for over 63 years. She was also a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and caregiver. Anne was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield, IL and more recently a member of Good Shepard’s Catholic Church in Evansville.

Throughout her life, Anne was a member of the Altar Society, Sewing Club, County Home Extension, and PTA. Active in her children’s 4-H Club, and many sports activities, she was an enthusiastic supporter in everything they achieved throughout life. Anne was the friend who was always there, the artist that inspired those around her and brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.

Surviving are her husband, Vince; sons Vincent Fyie, Port Sanilac, MI, Pat Fyie, Scottsdale, AZ, Joe Fyie, Boise, Idaho and daughters, Mary Davis, Cedar Crest, NM and Barbara Tilford, New Harmony, IN; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Anna and Frank Kunich, sister Bernice Tezak and grandson Eric Davis.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church on Thursday, Jan 15, at 10:00 am. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, Jan 14, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield, IL with a rosary being recited at 4:30 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity.

Kathryn E. Youngman

Kathryn E. Youngman, 87, formerly of Maunie, passed away the evening of Monday, January 12, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born November 1, 1921 in Emma Township, the “possum” community, the daughter of George and Anna (Kingery) Hurst. She married Donald Youngman on March 30, 1940 in Morganfield, KY and he preceded her in death on July 23, 2000.

Mrs. Youngman was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Sue Pollard and Donna Kathryn Evans of Maunie; one sister and brother-in-law, Fay and Joe Nichols of DeBary, FL; four grandsons and their spouses, William and Donna Pollard, Donnie and Theresa Pollard all of Maunie, Mike and Rajeanna Rowe of Enfield and Allen and Jenny Rowe of Maunie; two granddaughters, Rebecca Pollard and Christal Crawford of Maunie; eighteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five nephews, one niece; and a special friend, Harry “Gib” McDonald of Rising Sun. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant twin brother, Earl and a sister, Mildred Whitley.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at the Concord Cemetery in Emma Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Maunie Church of God.

Ronald D. “Hector” Brown

Ronald D. “Hector” Brown, age 71, of Oswego, IL, formerly of Carmi, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Aurora, IL. He was born January 6, 1938, in Centerville, IL the son of Drexel and Dixie (Young) Brown. He married Alice Ashby on April 7, 1966 in Carmi, and she survives.

Mr. Brown is survived by his father, Drexel Brown of Fairfield; two sons, Ronald Brown of Oswego, IL, and Garin (Barb) Brown of Montgomery, IL; a daughter, Carla (Rob) Voelker of Bristol, IL; two sisters, Doris (Steve) Duckworth of Greenfield, IN, and Nita Proctor of Shawnee, KS; eleven grandchildren, Ronald Brown III of Peoria, IL, Timothy, Cory, Allison, and Nicholas Brown, all of Oswego, IL, Samantha, Tyler, and Cody Brown, all of Yorkville, IL, and Justin, Travis, and Connor Voelker, all of Bristol, IL; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Dixie.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until Noon, Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. A committal service will follow at the White County Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Carmi with military rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion.

Jack Baker

Jack Baker, age 68 of Carmi, died early Thursday morning February 19, 2004 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born July 31, 1935 in Carmi the son of Oscar and Wilma (Felty) Baker. He married Mary Jo Schmittler Carrell on June 14, 1954 in Bennettville, South Carolina and she survives.

Mr. Baker along with his father and his brother, Don owned and operated the Veteran’s Cab Company in Carmi for many years, which Don still operates. He retired from the Carmi City Water, Light & Power Company in 1999. He was a member of the Carmi Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years. He was a past member of the Carmi American Legion. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He loved to travel, fish and camp.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Lee & Darlene Carrell, Sr., Joe Allen Carrell and Jack E. & Debbie Baker, all of Carmi; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sherry Jeanne & Bill King of Carmi and Gaye Lynn Wood of Albion; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Baker of Carmi; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Wilma Flowers of McLeansboro and Judy & Bill Warmack of Grayville; a brother-in-law, Charles York of Springerton, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons-in-laws, Leonard Ray Bassett and Bill Wood, great-granddaughter, Jonah Dismuke, and 3 sisters, Clara M. York, Norma Jean Baker and Barbara Ann Scott.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Joann C. Garrett

Joann C. Garrett, age 68 of Enfield, died Friday afternoon February 21, 2004 at her home. She was born July 5, 1935 in Putnam, CT the daughter of Ernest and Lila (Coates) Bousquet. She was married to Jerry Garrett on November 9, 2001 and he survives..

Mrs. Garrett had been the plant manager of the Larosa Spaghetti Factory in Pennsylvania. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Springerton.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry; seven sons and daughters-in-law, James Buckley of PA, Robert Joseph and Becky Flagg of FL, Norman and Beth Buckley of Enfield, David and Joyce Flagg of PA, Robert Buckley of PA, Mike and Lori Flagg of PA and Ronald Flagg of Virginia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laurel and Robert Carter of Springerton and Lila and Michael Candell of PA; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Nelson and Mary Bousquet of CA, Prescott and Betty Bousquet of CT and Douglas and Darlene Bousquet of CT; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Howard Brown of CT, Dawn and Roland Caouette of CT, her twin, Janice Cholewa of RI, Kathy Beauregard of CT and Judy and Buzz Cote of CT; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wave and John Dozier of Mill Shoals.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday February 24, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Fred Leeds officiating. Burial will be in Little Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield.

Marie Ward

Marie Ward, 69 of Carmi died Saturday afternoon, March 6, 2004 at her home. She was born August 1, 1934 in Omaha, IL the daughter of William and Alta (Cox) Patton. She married Joseph Ward, Jr. on October 21, 1951 in Pickett, AR and he preceded her in death on November 27, 1988.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She belonged to the Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Corwin Ward of Mt. Vernon, IL and three daughters, Connie Campbell of Carmi, Sherry Moss of Bluford, IL and Angie Anderson of Carbondale; four grandchildren, David Campbell, Star Moss, Austin Ward and Cameron Anderson; and two sisters, Ruby Aud of Bethalto and Dorothy Bassemier of Carmi. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ovella McCaleb, and three brothers, Gene, Ernie and William Patton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Atkins-Bethlehem Cemetery in Omaha.

Verna P. Williams

Verna P. Williams, age 75 of Plano, TX and formerly of Carmi, died Wednesday afternoon March 3, 2004 in Plano. She was born August 12, 1928 in Posey County, IN, the daughter of Clyde and Pauline (Wilson) Callicotte. She married Clarence A. Williams and he preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage on March 16, 2001.

Mrs. Williams was a GS 14 Contract Specialist for the U.S. Army aviation Systems Command when she retired in April of 1986 after 25 years of service. During her career she contracted for 214A and 214C helicopters for delivery to the Iranian Army aviation, and UH-1 Helicopters for Korea. Among her certificates is one awarded for accumulating a sick leave balance of 1500 hours.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lauren and Michael Lesko and Carla and Dan Buchanan all of Plano, TX; three grandchildren, Alex Lesko, Michael Lesko, Kathleen and her husband Rob Chapman; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Elena Chapman; three brothers, retired colonel John Truman Callicotte of St. Petersburg, FL, Jack Callicotte of Louisville and Thomas R. Callicotte of Atlanta GA; one sister, Joyce Mercer of Crossville. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, David Alan Williams; one brother, Clyde Merle Callicotte and three sisters, Patricia Ann Callicotte, Marie Harrolle and Hazel Rubelman.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday March 7, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Alfred E. “Gene” Bassett

Alfred E. “Gene” Bassett, 76, of Mill Shoals, died Friday, April 30, 2004 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He was born September 22, 1927 in Mill Shoals the son of Alfred and Alta (Files) Bassett. He married Bessie L. Brown on June 7, 1962 at Mill Shoals and she preceded him in death on January 17, 2002.

Mr. Bassett retired from Airtex in Fairfield in 1990. He was a Deacon at the Antioch General Baptist Church near Mill Shoals.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Darlene Gifford of Fairfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Dean West of Mill Shoals and Mary and Al Brockus of Pamona, CA; sixteen grandchildren and twenty nine great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nina Faye and Don Taylor of Grayville and Catherine and Lester Fisher of Albion; one sister-in-law, Wilma Bassett of Albion.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Dennis Gifford, two sisters, Edith Eckleberry and Corene Cullison and one brother, Norman Bassett.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday May 4, 2004 at the Antioch General Baptist Church near Mill Shoals with Burial in Shrewsbury Cemetery at Mill Shoals. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday May 3, 2004 at the Church. Oddfellows Services will be held at 7:45 p.m. The Elledge Funeral Home at Mill Shoals is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis Ray Gifford

Dennis Ray Gifford, age 48 of Mill Shoals died Wednesday afternoon January 7, 2004 at Mill Shoals. He was born August 4, 1955 at Fairfield, the son of Hayward Gifford and Bessie (Brown) Bassett.

Mr. Gifford had been a laborer and a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by six sons, Jamie Stroud of Tennessee, Jeremy Waldrop of Fairfield, Jason Corey of Marion, Dustin Corey of Mill Shoals, Rob Gifford of Marion and Lucas Gifford of Iuka; one step-daughter, Jessica Rowark of Fairfield; one step-son, Curt Staton of Mill Shoals; five grandchildren, Jace Waldrop, Aaliyah Waldrop, Caleb Gifford, Kendra Gifford and Jaidyn Staton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Dean West of Burnt Prairie and Mary and Albert Brocus of California, one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Linda Darlene Gifford of Fairfield and one sister-in-law, Denise Gifford of Fairfield; his step-father, Gene Bassett of Burnt Prairie and his companion, Tracy Staton of Mill Shoals. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ron Gifford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday January 10, 2004 at the Antioch Baptist Church near Burnt Prairie with Burial in Shrewsbury Cemetery at Mill Shoals. Visitation will be from noon until time of services at the church. military graveside rites will be conducted by the combined veteran units of the Carmi V.F.W. and American Legion.

The Elledge Funeral Home at Mill Shoals is in charge of arrangements.

Edward A. Knight

Edward A. Knight, age 82 of Crossville, died Tuesday evening May 18, 2004 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born June 24, 1921 in Grayville, the son of Royal Thomas and Mary Rebecca “Polly” (Landingham) Knight. He married Ruth Darnell on October 26, 1947 in Kentucky and she survives.

Mr. Knight farmed for most of his life. He also worked in the oil fields for Superior Oil Company for ten years. During the war, he worked in the CC Camps. He was a 50 year member of Sheba Lodge #200 in Grayville. He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark & Barbara Knight of Carmi; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wyonetta & Jim Pringle of Crossville and Wanda & Scott Emery of Galatia; six grandchildren and their spouses, Jim & Tammy Pringle, Matt & Angela Pringle, Justin & Carrie Pringle, Jonathan Knight, Heather Knight and Joshua Knight; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Baxter and Talissa Pringle; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald “Easy” Knight and Wayne Knight of Crossville, Loyal & Gay Knight and Bertis Knight of Carmi, Royal & Eva Knight of Florence, AL, Vertis & Tammy Knight of Grayville and Garrel & Judy Knight of Albion; and three sisters, Wilma Woodrow, Betty Michels and Venita Jones all of Grayville. He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Edward Knight; a grandson, Greg Emery, a sister, Viola Hawkins and a sister & brother-in-law, Lyndon & Ladonna Crackel.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2004 at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be held at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Phillipstown Cemetery.

Cleatus Rose Poshard

Cleatus Rose Poshard, 88, passed away at 2:43 p.m. February 14, 2004 at the White County Medical Center in Carmi, Illinois.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. February 17, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, Illinois. The Rev. Ernie Essary will preside. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2004 at the funeral home.

Mother was born on January 21, 1916 in rural White County where she resided nearly her entire life. She married our father, Louis Ezra Poshard in 1932. They built a home on her father Harrison O’Neal’s farm during the Depression and raised five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Jolene in 1960 and Rose in 2003. One great-great grandson, Chase Alexander and two great grandsons, Johnathon David and Satchel Bayou also went on before her. Dad died in 1977 and mother continued to live on the farm with her faithful collie and attend the Chapman Grove General Baptist Church with her friends and neighbors. The church and her family were the two things she enjoyed most in life.

Her children, William Edward and his wife, Phyllis of Carmi, Illinois, Madeline Givens and her husband John of New Haven, Illinois, and Glen and his wife Jo of Marion, Illinois will miss her greatly along with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

From time to time we’ll drive down into the hills of Southeastern Illinois where the old homeplace stood and we’ll remember the cold mornings gathered around the old pot bellied Warm Morning stove, mother in the kitchen at 5:00 a.m. cooking breakfast and softly singing the old gospel songs. She’d like us to remember her that way.

Bonnie B. Fechter

Bonnie B. Fechter, age 99 of Carmi, died Monday afternoon April 12, 2004 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born February 18, 1905 in Carmi, the daughter of Christopher and Eby (Allison) Kiefer. She married Jacob Fechter on December 3, 1922 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1983.

Mrs. Fechter was employed as a cook at Big Prairie School and at the Carmi Hospital before her retirement. She was a member of the Georgia General Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Claribel Grant of Broughton, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Lee Fechter and Jacob Andrew Fechter; five brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery.

Carroll Eugene Clutter

Carroll Eugene Clutter, age 85 of Plano, TX and formerly of Atlanta, GA and this area, died Friday afternoon April 2, 2004 at the Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton, TX. He was born near Cisne on February 6, 1919, the son of Earl and Vesta (Hubble) Clutter. He married Mary Etta Rush on February 11, 1942 at St. Charles, MO and she preceded him in death on March 8, 1995.

Mr. Cutter retired from the United States Army after 32 years of service. He had attained the rank of Colonel. He had been a member of the Springerton Christian Church. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Cisne.

He is survived by one son Carroll Lee Clutter of Plano, TX; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Scherf; two great-grandchildren, Madison Taylor and Kylee Ryan; one brother, Leland Clutter of Chillicothe, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 10, 2004 at the Springerton Christian Church with Burial in Springerton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday April 9, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. military rites will be conducted by the Carmi VFW and the Springerton American Legion.

Melvin Ray Combs, Sr.

Melvin Ray Combs, Sr., 70 of Carmi, died Monday morning May 17, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born May 10, 1934 in Fayette County, KY, the son of Charles and Bessie (Irvin) Combs.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Melvin R. and Dusty Combs, Jr. of Carmi, and two daughters and a son-in-law, Stephanie and Pete Barnes of Mt. Vernon, IN and Mariar Jane Combs of Norris City; four grandsons, Steven Combs and Thomas Combs of Carmi, Austin Combs and Blake Barnes of Mt. Vernon, IN, one granddaughter, Darrian Combs of Carmi; three brothers, Walter Kidd of Elizabethtown, KY, Lewis Combs of Berea, KY and Tommy Kidd of Waynesville, OH; five sisters, Jane Wease and Leila Hornback of Elizabethtown, KY, Mary Magee of Stanford, KY, Rosie Delaney of West Union, OH and Judy Finn of Canmer, KY; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Theadore Kidd, two brothers, James “Jim” Combs and Joe Kidd and two sisters, Minnie Combs and Loretta Combs.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Big Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 until the time of services at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Mary L. Elledge

Mary Louise Elledge, age 71 of Enfield, died Monday, June 28, 2004 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She was born July 30, 1933, the daughter of Jesse James and Mary Lucretia (Siddens) Jacobs. She married Arthur Laverne (Bud) Elledge on March 3, 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1987.

Mrs. Elledge assisted her husband in the operation of their funeral homes in Enfield, Norris City and Mill Shoals. Bud and Mary also were the founders and operators of the Enfield Nursing Home. She was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to many. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Alter Society; an honorary member of the Enfield Lions Club and a member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Cretia & Randy Dauby of Enfield and Loretta Elledge of Carmi; two grandchildren, Aaron Michael and Rachel Lucretia Daubey and one great-grandchild, Gavin Alexander Dauby. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter, Malissa Dauby, and one sister, Velda M. Pagel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to be given to the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation, the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the donor’s choice.
