Jerry Hart

Jerry Hart, a long time and beloved citizen of Carmi, passed away at his home, Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

He was born March 14, 1936 in Chicago, the son of Sam B. and Leah Bell (Baker) Hart.

He married Deanna Mecum on December 3, 1959 at Shawneetown and she survives.

Jerry was the longtime manager, owner operator of Hart Shoes in Carmi.

He is survived by his wife Deanna; one son, Aaron Hart of Louisville, KY; one daughter, Annie Eisenback of Louisville; two sisters, June Fredman of San Antonio, TX and Sharon Roeder of Prescott, AZ.

He is also survived by nieces nephews and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday July 20, 2009 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi with Burial in North Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Carmi Pets at Risk.

Christopher Robert Heid

Christopher Robert Heid, 58, of Enfield, a well known, Southern Illinois criminal defense attorney passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009, at his home.

He was born August 21, 1950, in Springfield, IL, the son of Robert L. and Marion (Bringaze) Heid.

He married Florence Grigsby Roberts with whom he had a son, Christopher Ross.

He later married Victoria Pool.

They had two sons, Sean and Andrew J. “AJ.”

Chris graduated from Springfield High School, Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University School of Law.

He was a veteran of the United States Army JAG.

In his legal career, Chris served as a public defender in Danville and Jackson County and worked for the Illinois Attorney General's Office in Springfield.

He served one term as State's Attorney of White County.

He was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association.

At the time of his death, he was in a private practice in Carmi, Illinois.

His father preceded him in death.

He is survived by his companion, Victoria; three sons, Christopher Ross Heid of Carmel, CA, Sean Heid, and Andrew J. “AJ” Heid, both of Enfield, IL; his mother, Marion Heid, of Springfield, IL; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Eugene and Mary Jane Heid of IL, Joe Heid of Tennessee, and Karl Heid of Indiana; seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Lila and Steve Antonacci, Marian and Steve England, Beth and James LaFata, Katy and Mike Broglin, Barbara and John Livingstone, and Therese and Danny Rhodes, all of Springfield, IL, and Roberta and Dan Pierro of Ohio; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2009, from 11:00 am until the time of funeral mass at 1:00 pm, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1377 County Road 25 E, Enfield, IL, with Reverend Stephen A. Rudolphi, celebrant.

A private family Burial will take place at a later date.

The family of Chris Heid is being served by the Stendeback Family Funeral Home of Enfield.

Cuma F. Holtzclaw

Cuma F. Holtzclaw, 81, of Carmi, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.

She was born February 2, 1927 in Burnt Prairie, IL, the daughter of James and Sarah Emily (Clay) Sheraden.

She married Henry Clay Holtzclaw on July 16, 1950, at the First Baptist Church in Carmi.

Cuma was a Post Master and worked at the Maunie Post Office for 33 years.

She was a member of the Maunie Methodist Church and the Amadeus Bible Class.

Cuma is remembered for volunteering and helping wherever she could.

She is survived by a son, Dennis Holtzclaw of Herrin, IL; two daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah Holtzclaw of Evansville, IN, and Kimberly and James Counts of Irvington, IL; a brother, Truman Sheraden of Geff, IL; a sister, Wilma Mogged of Decatur, IL; four grandchildren, Brandon Scott Holtzclaw of Herrin, IL, Sheraden Holtzclaw of Germany, Nicholas Clay Counts and Sarah Elizabeth Counts, both of Irvington, IL

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, James, on January 24, 2003, and ten brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 10, 2009, from 5 to 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will take place in Big Prairie Cemetery in Carmi.

Mary Lou Hopson

Mary Lou Hopson, 82, formerly of Carmi, passed away June 5, 2009 at the Silverado Senior Living Center in Kingwood, TX.

She was born April 12, 1927 in White County, IL the daughter of Preston and Verla Coale.

Mary Lou married James Robert “Bob” Hopson on May 30, 1952 in Carmi and lived there for several years.

She is survived by her siblings, Betty Sue Howard, Martin Coale, Michael Coale and Steven Coale; her two daughters and their husbands, Carol and Fred Pfanz of Westerville, OH and Nancy and Tom Stroud of Westminster, CO; her son-in-law Allen Baldwin of Kingwood, TX; five grandchildren, Amy Carrara (husband Aaron), Lisa Baldwin, and Sarah, John, and Matthew Pfanz; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Alex Carrara.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her sister Beverly, her daughters Sharon Baldwin and Linda Hopson, and her grandsons Michael Baldwin and Justin Stroud.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 13, 2009 at 11:30 am, at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi.

Reverend Mike Buckman will officiate.

Arrangements have been provided by Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi.

Jason Lee Hoy

Jason Lee Hoy, age 5, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009, in Mt Carmel.

He was born June 30, 2003 at Fairfield, the son of Ricky Ott of Carmi and Crystal (Hoy) Nash of Grayville.

Jason is survived by his step-father, Josh Nash of Grayville; one brother, Isaiah Nash and one sister, Violet Hoy both of Grayville; his maternal grandparents, James and Kathy Hoy of Carmi; paternal grandparents, Richard and Marie Ott of Carmi; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Cindy Hoy.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.

On Friday June 5, 2009 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi with Burial in Bruce Chapel Cemetery near Carmi.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Melvin L. Johnson

Melvin L. Johnson, age 72 of Carmi, died Wednesday morning April 8, 2009 at Cave In Rock.

He was born May 13, 1936 at Geneva, IL the son of L.B. and Adelia (Bills) Johnson.

Mr. Johnson had been an inspector in the Oil Field.

He is survived by four step-daughters, Devora Boyer of Eatonton, GA, Donna Miller of Pinkneyville, Brenda Ryan of Cave In Rock and Melba Harl of McLeansboro; eight step-grandchildren and two great-step-grandchildren; two nephews, and a special friend, Marilyn Tidwell of Carmi.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday April 10, 2009 at White County Memorial Garden near Carmi.

The Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Anna E. Lamp

Anna E. Lamp, 83, of Louisville, KY, formerly of Enfield, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, at St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, KY.

She was born October 6, 1925 in Crossville, IL, the daughter of William Samuel and Esther Lorena (King) Cantrell.

She married George N. Lamp on July 4, 1946 in White County, Illinois.

Anna was a homemaker for most of her life and had worked as a waitress for a few years.

She was a member of the Carmi VFW Women's Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Robert Ray Lamp, and his fiancee, Sarah Swanger of Louisville, KY; a daughter, Carol Ann French of Enfield, IL; a grandson, Christopher Lee Lamp, and his wife, Erin, of Knoxville, TN; a great-grandson, Jonathan Lamp, of Knoxville, TN; a niece, Loretta Brandon of Carmi; and a nephew, David Harrison, and his wife, Betty, of Greenfield, IN.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, in 1992; two brothers, and a sister.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 7, 2009, at 12:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service.

Burial will take place at Bruce Chapel Cemetery in Carmi.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to the American Heart Association.

Debra Kay Little

Debra Kay Little, age 53 of Crossville, passed Saturday morning July 18, 2009 at her home.

She was born September 18, 1955 in Carmi, the daughter of Bill and Janice K. (Wagner) Hite.

She married James “J” Little on March 2, 1991 in Carmi and he survives.

Deb worked as a manager at the Carmi McDonalds for 28 years.

She was a member of the Baptist Faith.

She loved animals.

She is survived by her husband, James “J” Little of Crossville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Dolores Holtzclaw of Crossville and Noah James Little of Carbondale; her mother Janice K. Hite of Carmi; one brother and sisters-in-law, Larry and Lisa Hite of Carmi and Jenny Hite of Carmi; four grandchildren, Shannon Dolan, Eric Walker, Janelle Blazier and Meredith Walker; four great-grandchildren, Maeve and Walker Dolan, Nolan Walker and Piper Blazier.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bill Hite and her brother, Michael Hite.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday July 21, 2009 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi with Burial in North Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday July 20, 2009 at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Pets at Risk.

Harry G. McDonald

Harry G. McDonald, 92, of Rising Sun, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at his home.

He was born October 1, 1916 at Maunie, the son of Gilbert W. and Edna (Fitzgerald) McDonald.

He married Lear E. Huff on May 29, 1937 and she preceded him in death on August 20, 1996.

Mr. McDonald had owned and operated McDonald Sand and Gravel west of Mt. Vernon, IN for several years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII.

He was a lifetime member of the Carmi V.F.W. Post and attended Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Don McDonald of Maunie and Keith and Louise McDonald of Mt. Vernon, IN; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Hershel Moore of Mt. Vernon, IN; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Penrod of Carmi.

He was preceded in death by one son, John.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday May 9, 2009 at Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church with Burial at Marshall Ferry Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday May 8, 2009 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi and two hours prior to services at the Church on Saturday.

military rites will be conducted by the Carmi V.F.W. And American Legion.

Harold Pollard

Longtime Carmi business owner Harold Pollard, age 70 of Carmi, died Monday April 6, 2009 at his home.

He was born May 21, 1938 in Carmi the son of Ossie and Emmarene (Chastain) Pollard.

He married Glenda Courson on May 24, 1957 at the First Methodist Church in Norris City.

Harold graduated from Carmi High School and DeVry Institute of Electronics of Chicago.

He was owner and operator of Pollards Electronic Sales & Service for 25 years.

He enjoyed raising and training Standardbred race horses and won the 1991 Egyptian Colt Stakes.

He enjoyed boating and RV'ing with friends and family.

A winning shuffleboard player, he was always in the top 3 players.

He appreciated his customers when he owned the electronics shop.

He was a member of the Carmi Elks Club and enjoyed visiting members of the Elks all over the United States.

He is survived by his wife Glenda; two daughters and son-in-law, Kim Fields of Carmi and Debra and Nick Ambrose of Evansville, IN; three granddaughters, Amber Short of Norris City, Kristal Ward of Evansville and Amanda Fromm of Charleston; two great-granddaughters, Abby Buttry and Madison Wheeler; three step-granddaughters and nine step great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother, Gerald; and one sister, Marilyn Duncan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday April 10, 2009 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi with Rev. Buddy Peyton officiating.

Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday April 9, 2009 at the funeral home.

John William “Buddy” Rush III

John William “Buddy” Rush III, age 53, of McLeansboro, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, at his home.

He was born November 28, 1955 in White County, the son of John William and Mabel (Gaines) Rush, Jr.

He retired from General Tire in Mt Vernon in 2004.

He was a member of Springerton Christian Church.

He is survived by his mother, Mabel Rush of McLeansboro; a son, John William Rush IV of Carmi; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Lew Jean Rush of Fairfield, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mae (Charles) Becker of Springerton, and Rebecca Rush of McLeansboro, and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, John William Rush Jr.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 2:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 15, 2009, from 5 to 8:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will take place in Springerton Cemetery.

Robert Warthen

Robert Warthen, age 61, of Enfield, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.

He was born October 27, 1947 in Eldorado, IL, the son of Willard and Beulah (Brunner) Warthen.

He worked at the Springerton Feed Mill as well as being a farmer.

He was a member of Enfield Methodist Church.

Robert is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John and Kay Warthen of Springerton; a half-brother, Woodrow “Bud” Biggerstaff of McLeansboro; a niece, Shannon Woodrow; and a great niece, Baileigh Warthen.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and a half-brother, Donald Biggerstaff.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 1:00 pm, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the time of service in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will take place in Enfield Cemetery.

Ruby E. Williams

Ruby E. Williams, age 85, of Enfield, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at the Way-Fair Nursing Center in Fairfield.

Ruby was born March 26, 1924 in Mill Shoals TWP the daughter of Claud and Bernie (Huffaker) Crawford.

She married Warren Williams on May 1, 1943 and he preceded her on October 31, 1993.

Ruby was a member of the Enfield Christian Church.

She spent much of her time at the Enfield Senior Citizen’s Center.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Bill Horn, and Karen and Bill Lewis, all of Enfield; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Gerald Healy of Carmi, and Reba and Carl Cushman of Enfield; three grandchildren, Johnny Fields of Mt. Vernon, IN, Billy and Charla Lewis of Enfield, and Melanie and Chad Garrett also of Enfield; four great-grandchildren, Chase Garrett, Cadence Lewis, Tiffany Horn, and Billy Horn.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 11:00 am, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 31, 2009, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery.

Dorothy L. York

Dorothy L. York, age 91, formerly of Enfield, passed away Friday, July 24, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.

Dorothy was born December 16, 1917, in Mill Shoals TWP, the daughter of Ray and Mamie (Garrett) South.

She married Ivan H. York in August of 1943 in Mill Shoals and eventually settled in Enfield.

She was a member of the General Baptist Church of Enfield.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Judy York of Enfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and David Nelson of Norris City; a daughter-in-law, Beverly York, of Fairfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Garrett and Dorothy Jean South and Carroll and Dixie South, all of Enfield; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Phyllis Sanders of Fairfield, and Emogene and Bob Thomas of Lincoln, IL; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan, on Nov. 25, 1971; a son, Dallas York; a brother, Doyle South; and a sister, Helen South; a brother-in-law, Bob Sanders; and a sister-in-law, Iris South.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 27, 2009 at 1:00 pm, at the General Baptist Church of Enfield.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 26, 2009 from 4 to 7:00 pm at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

Burial will take place in Little Zion Cemetery in Mill Shoals TWP.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to General Baptist Church of Enfield or to Wabash Christian Retirement Center Activities Fund.
