PEKIN—John Louis "Bill" Messmore, 85, of 115 N. 18th St. died at 5:15 a.m., Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.
Born June 16, 1915 in Peoria, he was a son of Samual I. and Elizabeth M. Kreuch Messmore. He married Helen Marie Charlton on September 21, 1946 in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife; 1 son, Dale (Annette) Messmore of East Peoria; 1 daughter, Linda (Michael) Danz of Pekin; 4 grandchildren, Brian Messmore and Sharon Messmore, both of East Peoria and Rachel Cody and Amanda Sleater, both of Pekin; and 2 Great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by 1 sister and 4 brothers.
Mr. Messmore was employed by Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria for 33 years, retiring in 1979 as a maintenance tinsmith.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin and its United Methodist Men. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Celestial City Campers in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2001 at First United Methodist Church in Pekin. Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

HERMAN S. HEILMAN
(1904~2001)
SPRING BAY—Herman S. Heilman, 96, of 1113 Josephine St., died at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, February 11, 2001 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.
Born August 9, 1904 in rural Tazewell County, he was a son of Phillip and Agnes Heilman. He married Velma L. Schwinn on December 28, 1929 in Pekin.
He was preceded in death by his wife on August 13, 1988 in Peoria and 1 sister, Erna Beck.
Surviving are 1 son, Bruce N. (Wilda) Heilman of Spring Bay; 2 grandchildren, Bryson N. Heilman and Wendy J. (Trent) Gilroy, both of Pekin; 2 step-grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 3 step-great-grandchildren; and 1 step-great-great-grandson; and his special friend, Bernice Light of Peoria.
Early in his career, Mr. Heilman operated his family farm in rural Pekin. In 1931, he designed a collapsible floral display stand and opened National Morticians Supply Company. In 1942, he joined the National Office of Price Control and eventually became the District Enforcement Executive. In 1945 he became the Federal Rent Control Office enforcement executive for most of Illinois. This eventually led to a career in real estate. He became a realtor for Commercial National Realty in 1953 and later worked for Lincoln National Realty. He became a commercial and industrial appraisor in the 1960’s and owned and operated HWC Realty Consultants in Spring Bay. He was the oldest active realtor in the United States.
He was a member and past president of the Peoria Board of Realtors. He was a former member and past chairman of the Peoria County Zoning Commission. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin. He helped organize the Teamsters and Chauffeurs Local 627 in Peoria.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Gaylord E. Buss will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday and 1 hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

EMIL A. PETRI
(1907~2001)
PEKIN ~ Emil A. Petri, 93, of 221 Henrietta Street, died at 8:55 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.
Born November 12, 1907 in Pekin to Henry and Charlotte Vedel Petri, he married Margaret D. Smith on June 28, 1985 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are five step-sons, Martin G. Terrell, Michael L. (Rene) Terrell, John G. Osborne and Richard E. "Dicki" Bush, all of Pekin and David W. (Mari) Osborne of Spring Lake; one step-daughter, Lisa A. (John) Sutton of Pekin; one sister, Dorothy Lucas of Morton; thirteen step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence "Bud" Petri and one sister, Martha A. Riviere.
A 65-year member of Laborer’s Local 231 in Pekin, he worked for Monge Construction in Pekin for many years. He also worked as a commercial fisherman on the Illinois River for the former Bush Fish Market in Pekin.
He was a 60-year member of Pekin Eagles Aerie 1869.
He formerly attended Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.
Mr. Petri was an outdoorsman and enjoyed
hunting, fishing and camping.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Gaylord E. Buss will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

PEKIN—Betty L. Bartlett, 73, of 110 Parkview Ct., Apt.5, died at 5:27 p.m., Friday, February 9, 2001 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.
Born February 22, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, she was a daughter of Harry A. and Bertha P. Hastay Wilcken. She married Stanley L. Bartlett on September 20, 1947 in Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her husband on January 23, 1991 in Mattoon, Illinois, and 1 son, Larry H. Bartlett on January 18, 1970 in Pekin.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Donna (Rick) Hochstetler of Pekin, Vicky (Rev. Thomas) Eckhardt and Phyllis (Jim) Scheuers, both of Peoria; 1 son, Kenneth (Jenny) Bartlett of Pekin; 11 grandchildren, Angela Welchel, Lonnie Hill, Angela Jones, Mark Hochstetler, and Chris Jones, all of Pekin, Kevin Bartlett, Keith Bartlett, Michael Eckhardt, Patrick Eckhardt, Timothy Eckhardt, and Bethany Eckhardt, all of Peoria; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bartlett had worked as a sales clerk for Thrifty Drug Store in Pekin, and its subsequent incarnations, SuperX and Revco, for 20 years until retiring in 1993.

SUSAN HANNAN

PEKIN ~ Susan M. Hannan, 69, of 312 Buena Vista Avenue, Apartment 11, died at 7:39 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2001 at her residence.
Born July 22, 1931 in Peoria to Arthur T. and Jessie Elizabeth Freitag Kriegsman, she married Donald J. Hannan on October 24, 1953 in Pekin. He survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth M. "Liz" (Mark) DeSchepper of Pekin; three sons, Matthew D. Hannan and Andrew K. (Angela) Hannan, both of Pekin and Timothy P. (Nicolle) Hannan of Bangor, Wisconsin; one brother, Philip F. (Jan) Kriegsman of Pekin and nine grandchildren, Brian F. DeSchepper, Chloe N. DeSchepper, Drew M. Hannan, Darah J. Hannan, Seth M. Hannan, Alex C. Hannan, Amanda N. Hannan, all of Pekin and Kate-Lynn Hannan and Sarah G. Hannan, both of Bangor, Wisconsin. Her parents preceded her in death.
In her younger years, she worked as a receptionist at Pekin Insurance. She also worked for a time in the family business, KMI Warehouses (Kriegsman Moving International) based in Pekin.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin, where she was a teacher for the Wednesday morning’s T.L.C. program (Time to Love the Children) at the church.
She was a 50-year member and past president of Chapter GW of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Pekin.
She was a former member of the board of directors of the Kickapoo Council of Girl Scouts, Youth Farm and also the Pekin Y.W.C.A.
She and her husband traveled extensively in the last 10 years.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2001 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Krista L. Brockman will officiate. There will be no visitation. Cremation will be accorded. Private inurnment will be in Lakeside Mausoleum in Pekin. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

LARRY GOODLICK

PEKIN ~ Larry Wayne Goodlick, 57, of 1903 El Camino Drive in Pekin, died at 7:28 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the Pekin Hospital Emergency Room.
Born September 28, 1943 in Pekin to Carl Emil and Bernice Alma Peterson Goodlick, he married Kathy Sue Ruppel on August 21, 1968 in Pekin. She died July 1, 1994 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are one son, Brian C. Goodlick of Pekin; one granddaughter, Courtney Lynn Keller Goodlick of Pekin; one brother, Richard L. (Jan) Goodlick of Pekin; four sisters, Donna A. Alt of Washington, Mary Alice Kuntz of Mackinaw, Wilma I. (Ray) Garber of Pekin and Judith I. (Dale) Kumpf of Hopedale. He also leaves his fiancee, Cathy L. Beers of Pekin.
He was a 25 year member of the Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union Local 627 in Peoria, working the last ten years as the self-employed owner and operator of Larry’s Trucking in Pekin. He previously worked as a brick mason.
He recently founded Rod Savers, Inc. in Pekin, storage systems for fishing rods.
He coached in the Pekin Junior Football League for eight years. He also was formerly a captain and volunteer with the Schaeferville Fire Department in Pekin.
He was an avid fisherman and boater.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

SANDRA SUE KOST

MAPLETON ~ Sandra Sue Kost, 50, of 10409 West Sir Tristram Court, Lake Camelot, Mapleton, died at 1:45 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2001 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born February 21, 1950 in Canton to Charles and Myra Armstrong Martin, she married Dennis Gene Mortland. She later married Bruce W. Kost on June 18, 1995 in Nassau, Bahamas. He survives.
Also surviving are her mother, Myra Smith of Canton; two sons, David A. Mortland of Peoria and Danny G. Mortland of Canton; one step-son, Brian N. Kost of Vermont; one step-daughter, Stacey K. (Pete) Savage of Beardstown; one grandson, Brian Henderson of Canton; three step-grandchildren, Ryan Kost of Vermont, and Jacob Savage and Sydney Savage, both of Beardstown; two sisters, Linda Enders and Jeannine (Gary) Murphy, both of Canton; one brother, Michael (Jeanie) Martin of Morehead City, North Carolina; and one step-brother, Dan (Melanie) Smith of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her father, step-father (Hiram Smith), and one granddaughter (Kimberly Mortland).
She was a 1968 graduate of Canton High School in Canton.
Mrs. Kost currently was working as the bookkeeper for KRX Trucking in Vermont for the past 9 years. She previously had worked for the ACPM Podiatry Group at their Canton office for 6 years as a bookkeeper.
She attended the Northwoods Community Church in Peoria. She enjoyed making crafts.
Private services will be Saturday in Morehead City, North Carolina.

PEKIN ~ Marvin Carl Ripper, 83, of 2118 Marigold Drive, Pekin, died at 9:42 a.m. Sunday, February 4, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.
Born March 11, 1917 in Cincinnati Township, Tazewell County to Carl and Anna Marie Stoetzer Ripper, he married Alta E. Murphy on February 1, 1946 in Pekin. She died September 28, 1993 in Pekin. Two sisters (Olivia Schilling and Esther Diefendorf) also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Rayburn E. Ripper and Nathan F. Ripper, both of Pekin.
Mr. Ripper worked at the American Distilling Company in Pekin for 35 years, retiring in 1979 as a shipping clerk. In prior years, he had worked at Standard Brands in Pekin.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and carpentry work.
He attended Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Gary L. Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

EAST PEORIA ~ Deanne Marie Bahn, 46, of 102 Ridge Lane, East Peoria, died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2001 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born December 4, 1954 in Pekin to Richard Paul and Maureen Turner Watson, she married Ronald Albert Bahn on March 9, 1974 in East Peoria. He survives.
Also surviving are her father and step-mother, Richard P. and Bonnie L. Watson of Pekin; mother, Maureen Turner of West Palm Beach, Florida; one son, Troy R. Bahn of East Peoria; one sister, R. Renee (Calvin) Sanden of West Palm Beach, Florida; one brother, Ronald J. Watson of West Palm Beach, Florida; and grandmother, Isabelle M. Watson of Pekin.
One sister (Kathleen M. Watson) preceded her in death.
She was a 1973 graduate of Pekin Community High School.
Mrs. Bahn lived in Florida from 1982 to 1997. While in Florida, she had worked as an office manager in a West Palm Beach, Florida dental clinic for 8 years.
She enjoyed reading.
She was a member of the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. James E. Kruse will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a Christian wake service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
