VIRGINIA M. WATKINS

PEKIN ~ Virginia Mable Watkins, 81, of 1100 South Capitol Street, Pekin, died at 5:46 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 at her residence.

Born November 2, 1919 in Quincy to Fredrick and Katherine Caroline "Katie" Yaeger Helmedag, she married Delbert Darrel Watkins on January 17, 1942 in Pekin. He died April 1, 1997 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, Timmie L. (Cheryl) Watkins of Lansing and Jack J. (Debra) Watkins of San Jose; six grandchildren, David M. (Kelly) Watkins of Hebron, Indiana, Lori A. Watkins of Lansing, Joseph F. C. Benson of Holiday, Florida, and Jack J. Watkins, Jr., Nicholas T. Watkins, and Emily M. Watkins, all of San Jose; two great-grandsons; and one sister, Helen (Albert) Williams of Gainesville, Florida.

Mrs. Watkins did house cleaning and ironing for others for many years.

She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, and the Council of Catholic Women.

She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and her grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. The Rev. Timothy Nolan will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel with a Christian wake service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 303 South 7th Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

BETTY JANE REICHTER
(1924~2001)

PEKIN ~ Betty Jane Reichter, 77, of 319 Edgewood Drive, Pekin, died at 5:25 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 at her residence.

Born January 12, 1924 in Peoria to John Wesley and Lucy Ann Baird Roberts, she married Edward Wilbert Reichter on April 20, 1951 in Pekin. He died September 9, 1975 in Pekin. Her parents and one sister (Alice M. Roberts) also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Eric D. (Sherill) Reichter of Normal and Russell E. (Jodie) Reichter, M.D. of Duluth, Minnesota; and five grandchildren, Jason E. Reichter of Normal, Nicholas E. Reichter, Karl J. Reichter, and Elizabeth A. Reichter, all of Duluth, Minnesota, and Sarah M. Reichter of Fairview Heights.

A 1945 graduate of Bradley University in Peoria with a Bachelors of Science degree, she later received her teacher’s certification from Bradley University.

Mrs. Reichter worked for Standard Brands in Pekin from 1945 to 1953 as a chemist. She then taught for 20 years for Pekin School District #108 at Willow School, Edison Junior High School, and last at Washington Junior High School, retiring in 1987 as a math instructor.

She was a member of the Tazewell County Retired Teachers Association, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and the Pekin Hospital Auxiliary where she was a past president.

She also was a member of the Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Pekin, and a former member of the Saint John’s guild.

She enjoyed knitting, reading, and traveling.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Pekin. The Rev. Mark A. Miller will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.

Arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

LUCILLE M. ROCKHOLD
(1911~2001)

PEKIN ~ Lucille Marie Rockhold, 89, of 1503 Mechanic Street, Pekin, died at 5:10 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 at her residence. She was formerly of 613 Caroline Street in Pekin.

She was born February 12, 1911 in Pekin to John Franklin and Marie Esther "Minnie" Sampen Rockhold.

Surviving are three nephews, Jack A. Rockhold and Duane H. Rockhold, both of Pekin, and Kenneth H. Rockhold of Edina, Minnesota; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and friends, Sharon Smith and Kimberly Ball, with who she made her home with.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother (Norman F. Rockhold), and one nephew (Norman L. Rockhold).

Ms. Rockhold worked for the American Distilling Company in Pekin for 40 years, retiring in 1973 as a label room clerk.

She was a member of the Pekin Women of the Moose #673 and the AmVets Post #169 ladies auxiliary in North Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the D.A.R.E. program at the Pekin Police Department, 400 Margaret Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

NEWANA "CONNIE" FOOTE
(1926~2001)

PEKIN ~ Newana Jerene "Connie" Foote, 74, of 1508 North Capitol Street, Pekin, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 at her residence.

Born April 2, 1926 in Kellerville to Roy Elmer and Minnie Alice Gabel O’Connor, she married Lester Eugene Foote, Jr. on June 17, 1951 in Clayton.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Deborah J. (Duane) Scogin and Leslie A. Zinkl, both of Kalamazoo, Michigan; one son, David R. (Candice) Foote of Clayton; and thirteen grandchildren.

Her parents and one sister (Joseph Fischer) preceded her in death.

A 1944 graduate of Clayton High School in Clayton, she received her teaching certificate from Western Illinois University in Macomb.

Mrs. Foote was an elementary school teacher in Clayton and later at C. B. Smith School in Pekin. She then was a substitute teacher for Pekin School District #108 and last was a librarian at Lincoln School in Pekin. She was a member of the Tazewell County Retired Teacher’s Association.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pekin, the Maranatha Sunday school class, and was a former Sunday school teacher. She and her husband were directors of the "Seniors Serving Seniors" ministry of the church.

She also taught piano lessons in her home.

Throughout her lifetime, her love for God manifested itself in her service to others. She especially enjoyed creating special memories with her family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2001 at the First Baptist Church of Pekin. The Rev. Dr. Robert E. MacKay will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel and 30 minutes prior to services on Monday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to "Seniors Serving Seniors" at First Baptist Church, 700 South Capitol Street, Pekin, IL 61554 or to the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center Hospice, 530 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, IL 61637.

FLORENCE E. LINDSEY
(1916~2001)

PEKIN ~ Florence Evelyn Lindsey, 84, of 1108 South 11th Street, died at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at her residence.

Born August 8, 1916 in Spring Lake Township to Erastus Alrick and Martha Alice Smith Vale, she married Haywood Shelton "Woody" Lindsey on September 1, 1934 in Havana. He survives.

Also surviving are one son, William H. "Bill" (Connie) Lindsey of Manito; four daughters, Martha R. Hayden and Donna J. (Roger) Frampton, both of Pekin, Bertha E. (Gerald) Haverkamp of Metropolis, and Janice K. (Aaron) Denton of Manito; fourteen grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Joyce D. Lindsey and Joan Lindsey; one great-granddaughter; seven brothers, and seven sisters.

She worked for the American Distilling Company in Pekin for 30 years in the bottling department, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.

She enjoyed sewing and making crafts.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1315 Court Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

VELMA GREEN
(1914~2001)

PEKIN ~ Velma Edna Green, 87, of 1913 Highwood Avenue, Pekin, died at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.

Born January 28, 1914 in Vienna to Earl and Pearl Coleman Henard, she married Clarence Otis Green on July 4, 1932 in Virginia, Illinois. He died October 9, 1976 in Hopedale. She was also preceded in death by her parents, step-father (John E. Williamson), one sister (Edna F. Krusa), and one brother (John Williamson).

Surviving are one daughter, Patsy A. "Pat" Stockert of Pekin; one son, Mickey M. "Mike" (Martha "Marti") Green of Wayne; four sisters, Essie Hyatt and Helen (Bill) Poff, both of Walnut Creek, California, June (Bill) Merris of Jacksonville, and Dolores (Verlin) Rolf of Bluffs; two brothers, Don (Irene) Henard of Marion and Rev. Dr. Ralph (Ruth) Henard of Boulder, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

A homemaker, Mrs. Green was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pekin.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, sewing, and painting.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church of Pekin. The Rev. Judy Doyle and Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

WILLIAM A. METCALF
(1917~2001)

PEKIN—William A. "Red" Metcalf, 83, of 73 Grove Place died at 4:10 p.m., Sunday, January 28, 2001 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born July 13, 1917 in Hennepin County, Illinois, he was a son of James Lee and Eleanor Myrtle Biggerstaff Metcalf. He married Elizabeth Jane Stutz on October 2, 1938 in Alton, Illinois. He later married Mary Alice Davis on September 23, 1961 in Davenport, Iowa. She died October 31, 1998 in Pekin. Also preceding in death were 2 sisters, and 1 great-granddaughter.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Tiffany (Randy) Hoyland of Delavan, Charmaine Metcalf of Concord, California and Linda (Al) Kareiva of Pauley’s Island, South Carolina; 1 son, Gerald (Alice) Metcalf of Chillicothe, Illinois; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Metcalf was a car salesman in the Pekin area for 33 years, last working for Scherer Buick-Isuzu in North Pekin for 25 years until retiring January 1, 1985. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post #44 in Pekin, a 50 year and life member of Empire Lodge #126 A.F.&A.M., a member and past president of Celestial City Campers, and a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Pekin. Rev. Terry Edele and Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel and 30 minutes prior to services Wednesday at the church. Masonic rites will be at 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Silver Doors Fund at First United Methodist Church, 1315 Court St., Pekin, IL 61554.

LESLEY WATSON
(1916~2001)

PEKIN ~ Lesley "Lit" Watson, 84, of 1506 Norman Drive died at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.

Born November 10, 1916 in Reynolds, Missouri to Leonard and Hattie Salsman Watson, he married Joyce M. Brawley on December 12, 1936 in St. Genevieve, Missouri. She died October 19, 1988 in Pekin. He then married Bonnie J. Johnson on June 3, 1989 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Irma L. (Jerry) Utsinger of Farmington; three sons, Wayne (Pat) Watson of Groveland, Larry (Sue) Watson and Terry L. Watson, all of Pekin; three stepsons, Philip (Sue) Kemper, Mark (Sharon) Kemper, all of Pekin and Randy (Brenda) Kemper of Brighton; one stepdaughter, Billie Jean (Kevin) Dricks of Cuba; eighteen grandchildren; thirteen step-grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and thirteen great-great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Myrna Miller; one son, Delmar Watson; seven brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Watson was a self-employed logger for a majority of his working years. He last worked for Pekin Hardwood Lumber as the night watchman for more than seven years, retiring in during the 1990’s.

He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church of God in Pekin.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. James H. Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight (Monday) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorials may be made to a fund to help care for his son, Terry, in care of Pekin Savings Bank.

RITA M. MCCULLEY
(1915~2001)

PEKIN ~ Rita Mary McCulley, 85, of 1416 Caroline Street, died at 12:40 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2001 at Pekin Hospital.

Born September 8, 1915 in Pekin to Louis Jacob and Anna Kathrine Haupts Hobe, she married Clarence "Mac" McCulley on June 11, 1938 in Pekin. He died April 7, 1995 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Hobe, Louis M. Hobe and John Peter Hobe and two sisters, Florence Sciortino and Anna Marie Nelson.

Surviving are one son, Gary W. (and Nancy) McCulley; two grandchildren, Marci A. (and Gary) Muelling and Marc D. (and Melinda) McCulley, all of Pekin; and five great-grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. James E. Kruse will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

LENORA C. HOYLE
(1917~2001)

MARQUETTE HEIGHTS ~ Lenora Coralie Hoyle, 83, of 490 Jones Road, Clarksville, Tennessee, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, January 21, 2001 at her residence. She was formerly of 704 LaSalle Boulevard in Marquette Heights.

Born July 18, 1917 in Chandlerville to Andrew Anthony and JoAnne Combs Jackson, she married William Glen Hoyle on June 19, 1937 in Pekin. He died November 29, 1986 in Marquette Heights. She was also preceded in death by twin infant daughters (Bonnie J. Hoyle and Beverly J. Hoyle), one sister (Norma J. Lanhardt), one half-sister and two half-brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, Pat A. (Barry) Kirchner and Sharon F. (Ray) Rearden, both of Chillicothe, and Peg J. Jones of Clarksville, Tennessee; two sons, Ronald G. (Linda) Hoyle of Marquette Heights and Daniel L. (Brenda) Hoyle of Mapleton; ten grandchildren, Kelly L. (Don) Groeper and Tim K. (Carol) Kirchner of Washington, Ron M. (Christi) Hoyle of Marquette Heights, Todd J. (Gina) Rearden of LaGrange, Lori L. (Kevin) French of Clarksville, Tennessee, Andrew W. Hoyle and Mindy S. (Brian) Bevell of Mapleton, Jeffrey A. Jones of Visalia, California, Traci A. (Troy) Naylor of Pekin, and Jami L. (Randy) Lemon of East Peoria; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Hornbacker of Glasford.

She enjoyed oil painting, sewing, and crocheting.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
