DIMPLES RILEY
(1907~2001)

PEKIN ~ Dimples Mae Riley, 94, of 1428 DelRay Street, died at 11:27 p.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born June 20, 1907 in Charleston, West Virginia to George McClelland and Minnie Mae Hughes Jordan. She married Roy E. Riley on November 1, 1926 in Cattlesburg, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband on August 15, 1960 in Charleston, West Virginia; and three brothers.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda (Larry) McMillion of Pekin; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dana (Judy) Jordan of Cleveland, Ohio.

Mrs. Riley worked at Lexington Homes in Peoria for 15 years, retiring as a dietary supervisor in 1979. She was of the Baptist faith.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2001 at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. Rev. Virgil Haywood will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

ROBERT O. WALLIN
(1932~2001)

PEKIN ~ Robert Ola Wallin, 69, of 309 Pine Valley Drive, Pekin, died at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at his residence.

Born March 12, 1932 in Lebanon to Ola and Anna Voss Wallin, he married Vivian M. Maquet on August 12, 1956 in Pekin. He later married Vicki L. Runyan on March 21, 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Janet M. (Robert) Saal of Pekin and Barbara A. (Robert) Madsen of San Diego, California; one son, David R. Wallin of River Forest; one step-daughter, Hilary P. Flack of Peru; one grandson, Walker R. Madsen of San Diego, California; and one brother, Charles "Dutch" (Ginny) Wallin of Lebanon.

His parents preceded him in death.

He served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1953.

He was a 1959 graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. He was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity.

Mr. Wallin taught Industrial Arts and Mathematics for Pekin Public Schools District #108 at Edison Intermediate School for 20 years. He presently owned and operated M & W Assemblers in Pekin since 1986. He formerly owned and operated Pekin Rental Center and formerly operated Twin Lakes Beach in North Pekin for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Pekin AMBUCS and was past chairman of its annual charity auction. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Pekin Country Club and a former member of its Board of Governors.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the services.

HAZEL E. M. NEWLUN
(1913~2001)

PEKIN – Hazel Emma Marie Newlun, 87, of 191 East Queenwood Road, Morton, died at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at Morton Terrace, Ltd. She was formerly of Pekin.

Born November 26, 1913 in Delavan Township, Tazewell County to John and Emma Carrie Klopp Timm, she married Louis Earl Newlun on April 14, 1934 in Delavan. He died December 5, 1949 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by one son (Jerald L. Newlun), two brothers (Lawrence Timm and Fritz Timm), and one sister (Edna Whittaker).

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce K. (Robert) Fornoff of Pekin and Janice M. (Richard) Scherer of Tremont; seven grandchildren, Stephen L. (Debra) Fornoff of Washington, Diane L. Fornoff, Jeri C. (Lonnie) Wiseman, and Gina M. (Rick) Kuhn, all of Pekin, Bryan L. (Pennie) Newlun of Michigan, Lori M. (Tim) Kincaid of Green Valley, and Darrin D. (Tara) Scherer of Sulphur Springs, Texas; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Responsible for starting the school lunch program at Rankin School in rural Pekin, she had worked as the head cook for many years. She retired in 1985.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, and its Concordia Society and former Ladies Aid Society. She also was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club.

She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, and baking.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 21, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Rodger P. Abatie will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prairie Rest Cemetery in Delavan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, 530 Northeast Glen Oak Avenue, Peoria, Illinois 61637.

SCOTT S. SMITH
(1950~2001)

PEKIN—Scott Samuel Smith, 50, 3313 Europa Dr., Naples, Florida died at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2001 at the Hospice Center of Naples. He was formerly of Pekin.

He was born December 2, 1950 in Bloomington, the son of Samuel S. and Bertha Marie Petri Smith. He married Sharon Blankenbaker on August 12, 1986 in Nassau, Bahamas.

Surviving are his wife; his mother, of Pekin; 1 son, Schuyler S. Smith of Naples; and 2 daughters, Virginia M. Smith and Samantha A. Smith, both of Naples.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Smith was a 1969 graduate of Pekin Community High School and had attended Hiram Scott College in Nebraska. He was the owner of Cable Pro-Mark, Inc. which provided promotion and events for national cable television companies. He was formerly a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.

Cremation has been accorded. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 23, 2001 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin. Rev. Gaylord Buss will officiate. Burial of cremains will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

LOUIS C. TAYLOR
(1928~2001)

PEKIN ~ Louis Charles "Louie" Taylor, 73, of 221 Reservoir Road, Pekin, died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday, September 16, 2001 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

Born March 22, 1928 in Spring Lake Township, Tazewell County to Clyde C. and Marie Katherine Weber Taylor, he married Nona Bernice Broomfield on February 20, 1954 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Charles C. "Chuck" (Julia) Taylor and Clyde L. "Cy" (Debbie) Taylor, both of Pekin; one daughter, Cindy M. (Scott) Conley of Pekin; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Weldon (Barb) Dickson of Manito; and one sister, Delores (Fred) Kalhammer of Manito.

His parents and stepfather, Cecil D. Dickson, preceded him in death.

A World War II and Korean War United States Navy veteran, he was a member of the William Schaefer American Legion Post #44, Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1232, and the George Maple AmVets Post #235, all of Pekin.

Mr. Taylor joined the Pekin Fire Department on June 2, 1955. He was promoted to Captain in October of 1961 and later to Assistant Fire Chief on January 5, 1970. He was appointed Interim Fire Chief on February 1, 1982. He retired on June 8, 1985 after 30 years of service. He was a 45 year member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 524 of Pekin and was an honorary member of the Marquette Heights Fire Department. He had taught Fire Science at Illinois Central College in East Peoria and at many area fire departments. He also had worked at The Sign Shop in Pekin as a graphic design artist from 1985 to 1995.

He was a former member of First Christian Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #916, the Masonic Lodge, and the Toastmasters where he was past president, all of Pekin.

He enjoyed reading, writing, cartooning, bowling, woodcarving, and was a Chicago Bear’s fan.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2001 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with an honor guard by the Pekin Fire Department. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Pekin Fire Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, c/o International Association of Firefighters, Post Office Box 65858, Washington, D.C. 20035-5858.

IRENE C. FRIEDRICH
(1900~2001)

GREEN VALLEY—Irene C. Friedrich, 100, of 102 Linden Lane died at 9:53 p.m., Sunday, September 16, 2001 at her home.

She was born October 15, 1900 in Cincinnati Township, Tazewell County, Illinois to Adam J. and Anna Wendell Hoerr. She married Rudolph L. "Rudy" Friedrich in September 1917.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1966 in Pekin; 1 son, Glenn Friedrich on May 20, 1999 in Pekin; 1 grandson, Arlan Urish on March 27, 1968 in Galesburg; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Virginia Urish of Green Valley and Bernice Urish of Canton; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Mildred (Alvin) Becker of Pekin.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Green Valley, she was a charter member of its Epiphany Society, a member of the Dorcas sewing circle, and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of Tazewell County Home Extension. She also enjoyed flower gardening.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Green Valley. Rev. Thomas R. Wenndt will officiate. Burial will be in Sand Prairie Cemetery, next to the church. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to the Green Valley Rescue Squad.

DOROTHY M. GROGAN
(1923~2001)

PEKIN, IL—Dorothy May Grogan, 78, of 2220 State St. died at 9:45 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Pekin Living and Rehabilitation Center. She was formerly of rural route 3 Pekin and Yukon, Missouri.

She was born June 8, 1923 in Rolla, Missouri to Ralph T. and Evelyn Howard Gilbert. She married Clifford T. Grogan on November 25, 1942 in Rolla.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 5, 1991 in Springfield, Missouri; 3 sons, Richard, Clifford, and Robert Grogan; 1 grandson; 1 sister; and 5 brothers.

Surviving are 3 sons, William K. (Carol) Grogan and Michael R.(Linda) Grogan, both of Pekin, and Mark N. (Lisa) Grogan of Arnold, Missouri; 1 daughter, Barbara (David) Wisdom of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Earl (Judy) Gilbert of St. James, Missouri; and 3 sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Lloyd) Hymbaugh and Katherine Copeland, both of Rolla, and Darlene Bishop of Alton, IL.

Mrs. Grogan had been employed by the Canteen Services facility at the Mapleton Caterpillar, Inc. plant for 9 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church of God in rural Pekin.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at Rolla Cemetery in Rolla, Missouri. Rev. Charles L. Williams will officiate.

ESTHER M. HILLIS
(1924~2001)

PEKIN—Esther Marie Hillis, 76, of 1005 Summer St., Apt. A, died at 11:58 p.m., Friday, September 14, 2001 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born October 16, 1924 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama to Modie B. and Ada E. Cobb Daniel. She married Jimmie Lee Hillis on July 1, 1966 in Peoria.

She was preceded in death by her husband on February 20, 1995 in Peoria; 4 brothers and 1 sister.

Surviving are 1 son, Lindon L. (Carol) Cagle of Pekin; 2 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Virginia Austin and Lafara Dean, both of Muscle Shoals; and 1 brother, Cecil E. (Alma Lee) Daniel, also of Muscle Shoals.

Mrs. Hillis last worked as a waitress and cook at the Center Tap in East Peoria for 4 years and previously had worked at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in East Peoria for 13 years. She was a member of the General Baptist Church in North Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Jim DeBruyne will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the funeral home.

PATRICIA L. PHILLIPS
(1935~2001)

PEKIN ~ Patricia L. Phillips, 66, of 1101 South 11th Street in Pekin, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2001 at O.S.F. Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born February 24, 1935 in Mount Vernon to Clifford Roscoe and Venita B. Whitlock Karch, she married Gail R. "Skip" Marshall on March 25, 1953 in Washington, D.C. She later married Glen Morgan "Whitey" Phillips on December 31, 1966 in Texico. He died July 1, 1998 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one step-son, Scott L. Phillips on July 19, 1997 in Pekin.

Surviving are one son, Michael "Larry" (Tracy) Marshall of South Windsor, Connecticut; one daughter, Peg Phillips of Pekin; one step-daughter, Patricia M. Whitley of Peoria; four grandchildren, Daniel Whitley of Pekin, Kyrie Phillips of Mackinaw, Paige Marshall and Samantha Marshall, both of South Windsor; one brother, Clifford A. (Thea) Karch of Larkspur, Colorado; and her mother-in-law, Doris M. Phillips of Pekin.

Also surviving are members of her extended family, including William (Janet) Whitlock of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Peggy R. (Joe) Morgan of Columbus, Ohio; Laurie Phillips of Mackinaw; Sandra Miller; Deanna Gail Driver; Marion Driver; Rachel Driver; Trisha Saal; Larry Daniel Saal and Matthew Scott, all of Pekin.

She owned and operated Phillips Tax Service in Pekin from 1975 to 1999 at which time she sold the business to her daughter. She continued to work at the tax service until 2001. She was an Enrolled Agent authorized to practice before the IRS since 1992.

She worked for Pekin Insurance from 1994 until retiring in March of 2000, working as the second shift assistant supervisor in the Personal Lines Department.

She was a member and former treasurer of the Southside Business Association in Pekin. She was a member and past president of the American Business Women’s Association and was selected as Woman of the Year in 1984.

She was a former member of Parkway Christian Church in Pekin.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Kevin A. Robbins will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following services. Burial of cremains will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery at Texico.

The family will receive friends following the visitation at Ernie’s Family Restaurant, 613 Derby Street in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kyrie Morgan Phillips Education Fund through Edward Jones, 328 South 4th Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

MARY A. HOYLAND
(1928~2001)

PEKIN—Mary Hoyland, 73, of 14298 Townline Rd., died at 12:53 p.m., Sunday, September 9, 2001 at her home. She was a life-long resident of central Illinois.

Born September 6, 1928 in Woodford County, she was a daughter of Albert and Rosa Burkhalter Schaer. She married Ralph E. Hoyland on April 19, 1947 in Spring Bay.

Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Dennis (Candy) Hoyland, Sr. of Groveland and Randy (Tiffany) Hoyland of Delavan; 1 daughter, Holly (James) Chism of Pekin; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, John (Evelyn) Schaer of Spring Bay, Willie (Winnie) Schaer of East Peoria, and Paul (Thelma) Schaer of Germantown Hills; and 4 sisters, Frieda Strietmatter of Edelstein, Louise (James) Schoonover of East Peoria, Eileen Allen of Pekin; and Clara (Jack) Kleinschmidt of Canton.

She was preceded in death by 2 brothers.

Mrs. Hoyland was a realtor employed by Olt and Griffin Real Estate in Pekin for 16 years, retiring in 1987. Previously, she had worked at Sunset Lanes in Pekin for 12 years and at Bergners in Pekin for 9 years. She enjoyed baking and flower gardening and was formerly a member of the Pekin Board of Realtors. She attended the Pekin First Church of God.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Private funeral services will be Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. R. Keith Heberer will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Bay Cemetery in Spring Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
