HARLEY B. SWANSON
(1915~2002)

PEKIN ~ Harley Bertal Swanson, 87, of 702 Prince Street in Pekin, died at 11:42 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2002 at Pekin Hospital.

Born January 26, 1915 in Galesburg to Albert Bertal and Anna Emilia Peterson Swanson, he married Helen Christine Wing on October 5, 1935 in Galesburg. She died September 24, 1987 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by one son, Michael Harley Swanson on October 15, 1998 in Memphis, Tennessee and one brother in infancy.

Surviving are one son, Stephen W. (Barbara) Swanson of Pekin; one daughter, Susan Christine (William) Calvert of Berwyn; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Mr. Swanson worked as a fundraiser for schools and churches for more than 25 years and retired in 1977.

He was a charter member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pekin and a former member of the church council.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Woodhull Cemetery in Woodhull. The Rev. Paul D. Balaban will officiate. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 2223 Sheridan Road, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

JOHN H. SILTMAN
(1947~2002)

PEKIN ~ John Henry Siltman, 54, of 1803 Tharp Street, Pekin, died at 6:58 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in the emergency room of St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Born July 4, 1947 in Pekin to Herman Gilbert and Eileen Violet Cross Siltman, he married Nila Faye Copeland on September 16, 1967 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Lincoln; one son, David W. (Deanna "Dee") Siltman of Pekin; one daughter, Lisa M. (Bobby) Spencer of Arbyrd, Missouri; six grandchildren; one sister, Sue E. (Joe) Lee of Des Moines, Iowa; and three brothers, Alan D. (Deborah) Siltman of Atlanta, Illinois, Ivan G. (Vickie) Siltman of Minier, and Irvin S. (Phyllis) Siltman of Morton.

His father preceded him in death.

He had served in the Army reserves.

He received a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University in Peoria.

Mr. Siltman worked 36 years for Caterpillar, Inc., last working Wednesday as a computer systems analyst in East Peoria.

An associate member of the National Aeronautic Association, he was a member of the Pekin R.C. Club and the Caterpillar Employees Motorsports Club.

He was a former board president of Rankin School in rural Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Siltman grandchildren, in care of National City Bank, 3545 Court Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

M. EMILY GERDES
(1916~2002)

PEKIN—Mary Emily Gerdes, 85, of 317 51st Avenue Plaza W, Bradenton, Florida died at 4:10 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2002 at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Bradenton. She was formerly of 349 Charlotte St. in Pekin.

Born July 27, 1916 in Pekin to Oscar E. and Pearl Marie Roberts Jackson, she married Elmore F. Gerdes on April 21, 1935 in Pekin. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1993 in Pekin.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Donna A. (Charles) Kitchell of Eldridge, Iowa; 2 grandsons, Michael C. (Mary Sue) Kitchell of Milan, Illinois and Arlen S. Kitchell of Eldridge; and 4 great-grandchildren. She also leaves a special friend who helped care for her, Harriet Kipling of Sarasota, Florida.

Mrs. Gerdes was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin and its Womens’ Missionary Society.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Michael McLeod will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or the American Diabetes. Association.

DOROTHY M. OWEN
(1918~2002)

PEKIN ~ Dorothy M. Owen, 84, of 1107 Hamilton Street in Pekin, died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.

Born September 22, 1918 in Pekin to Thomas B. and Grace Frances Mann Storer, she married Bruce L. Owen on September 22, 1939 in Pekin. He died June 8, 1984 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Surviving are one daughter, Jan Maas; two grandchildren, David Maas and Kelly (David) Neumann, all of Pekin and three great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Pekin. She was a former board member at the Pekin YWCA, where she also served as a teen leader.

She loved to fish and cook.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. James E. West will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial & Tributes Program, Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, Illinois 60678-3968 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

JULIE K. REVIE
(1963~2002)

PEKIN ~Julie Kay Revie, 39, of 1708 Heisel St., died at 11:22 p.m., Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born May 27, 1963 in Pekin to Richard and Judith Havens Waggoner. She married Dale L. Revie on January 31, 1981 in Pekin.

Surviving are her parents, of Pekin; paternal grandparents, Ollie and Esta Waggoner of Pekin; 1 daughter, Delona K. Revie of Pekin; 1 son, Robert E. Revie of Pekin; 2 brothers, Richard R. (Evelyn) Waggoner, II of Pekin and Kyle L. Waggoner of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by 1 son, Matthew L. Revie on July 13, 1981 in Peoria; and her maternal grandparents.

She was of the Christian faith and had attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Cremation will be accorded following visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for her children which is being established at the CEFCU Pekin office.

ALBERT E. "LEFTY" SEVIER
(1919~2002)

SOUTH PEKIN ~ Albert E. "Lefty" Sevier, 83, of 2714 Village Court, Pekin, died at 1:58 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2002 at Pekin Manor. He was formerly a longtime South Pekin resident.

Born March 22, 1919 in Waverly, Illinois to Albert Earle and Mary B. Morris Sevier, he married Bessie Roof on March 21, 1942 in Palmyra, Missouri. She died February 28, 2001 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Surviving are one son, Larry (Marie) Sevier of Pekin; one daughter, Sandra (Roy) Johnson of Pekin; six grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and four brothers, Donald (Mary) Sevier, Morris (Doris) Sevier, Gary (LaVetta) Sevier, all of Pekin and Louis (Joyce) Sevier of Coconut Creek, Florida.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1232 in Pekin.

He was a pipefitter at Corn Products Company in Pekin for 36 years, retiring July 1, 1975. He was a member of the Pioneer Club at Corn Products.

He was a past Grand Marshall of South Pekin’s 4th of July parade. He was a long-time member of the South Pekin Fire Department. He was a former member of the South Pekin Grade School District Board of Education. He also was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 916 in Pekin.

He was a member of the South Pekin Congregational Church, where he was a Trustee, Deacon and Board Member. He also was president of the men’s club at the church.

He loved to camp, attend auctions and hunt. He also was an avid sports fan and a former Pekin Chinks athlete.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Thomas Cone will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where his VFW post will conduct military rites.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Pekin Congregational Church, 202 South Meyers Court, South Pekin, Illinois 61564.

DOROTHY A. COOPER
(1927~2002)

METAMORA ~ Dorothy Adaline Cooper, 75, of Lot 22, Lake Wildwood, Metamora, died at 6:35 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2002 at her residence.

Born April 22, 1927 in South Pekin to James E. and Rebecca Cornwell, she married Robert N. Cooper on January 16, 1946 in Pekin. He survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Betty Cooper of Morton, Shirley Armstrong of Metamora, Barbara (Rick) Pollard of Deer Creek and Roberta Evans of Pekin; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Tribble and Martha (Donald) Beeney, both of Pekin and two brothers, Chuck (Betty) Cornwell of Texas and William Cornwell of Pekin.

She had worked for the American Distilling Company in Pekin. She also had worked as a waitress for the B and F Restaurant.

She was a life member of the Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1232 Ladies Auxiliary and George M. Maple Memorial Amvets Post 235 Ladies Auxiliary.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

JOHN M. HODGES, JR.
(1924~2002)

PEKIN ~ John Mitchel Hodges, Jr., 78, of 1506 North 5th Street in Pekin, formerly of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, died at 6:53 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2002 at Pekin Hospital.

Born November 29, 1924 in Herrin, Illinois to John Mitchel and Lucille Howell Hodges, Sr., he married Martha Louise Tisdale on November 1, 1944 in Dallas, Texas. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Pekin; one son, John M. "Skip" (Jan) Hodges, III of Hot Springs, Arkansas; two daughters, Susan L. (Karl) Kaebel and Corrie J. (Bruce) Bennett, both of Pekin; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty J. Kaebel of Pekin and one nephew.

His father preceded him in death.

Mr. Hodges was a World War II Army Air Forces veteran, serving in the European Theater as a navigator aboard the B17. He flew 23 combat missions.

He was a graduate of Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He also earned his Master of Science degree in Education.

He was employed by Pekin Community High School District 303 from 1949 to 1957 as a mathematics teacher, counselor and assistant football coach.

He became a realtor with Richard Olt Realty in Pekin in 1956. He went into partnership in 1960 as Haas & Hodges Realtors in Pekin. In 1971, he founded John M. Hodges and Associates Realtors. He moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas in 1978, where he founded Big Red Realty, Inc. He retired in 1997 and returned to Pekin.

Mr. Hodges was presently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Pekin. He was a past member and president of the Pekin Community High School Board of Education. He was a past-president of Pekin Board of Realtors and of the Hot Springs Village Board of Realtors.

He was a member of Pekin Moose Lodge No. 916. He was a former member of Pekin Country Club, where he was a past member of their Board of Governors. He also was a former member of the Lions Club in Hot Springs Village, Pekin Elks Club and Sunset Hills Country Club in Pekin.

He attended First Christian Church in Pekin.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at First Christian Church in Pekin. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, with military graveside rites accorded. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Illinois Dream Factory, P.O. Box 1431, Pekin, Illinois 61555-1431.

C. RICHARD JEFFERSON
(1926~2002)

PEKIN ~ Charles Richard "Dick" Jefferson, 76, of 2111 Glenview Drive in Pekin, died at 4 p.m., Sunday, December 1, 2002 at Pekin Manor.

Born September 25, 1926 in Winchester to Charles T. and Inez S. Sibert Jefferson, he married Elaine June Bacon on June 12, 1949 in Pekin. She died September 7, 1985 in Pekin. He later married Ruth F. Fowler Taft on May 28, 1988 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Rev. Julie A. Jefferson of Litchfield; one son, Kurt R. Jefferson of Lexington, Kentucky; two step-sons, Mark S. (Heather) Taft of Holcombe, Wisconsin and Barry T. (Debra) Taft of St. Francis, Minnesota; one step-daughter, Kimberlee A. (Jeff) Koski of Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren and one brother, William S. (Joyce) Jefferson of Denver, Colorado.

One infant son also preceded him in death.

A 1944 graduate of Pekin Community High School, he was a World War II Navy veteran. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Illinois at Champaign with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 38 years, retiring August 1, 1988 as senior staff engineer. He had been a registered professional engineer for many years and was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin, where he had served on the Board of Trustees, as a member of the Finance Committee and member of the Administrative Council. He also was a member of the United Methodist Men at the church.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at First United Methodist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and also 30 minutes before services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1315 Court Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554 or to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, Inc., 1501 Northwest 9th Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, Florida 33136-1494.

BETTY J. KRUKEWITT
(1925~2002)

PEKIN ~ Betty Joan Krukewitt, 77, of #8 Pioneer Drive, Pekin, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at her home.

Born February 10, 1925 in Arcola to Bryan and LaVon Huffman Mannin, she married Max Bowen Krukewitt on May 19, 1943 in Homer. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Sandra J. (Bill) Jamison of Walnut and Debbie K. (Daryl) Cather of Pekin; four grandchildren, Beth A. (Roy) Goetsch and Randy W. (Andrea) Jamison, both of Walnut and Deidre A. Cather and Dustin A. Cather, both of Pekin; eight great-grandchildren; and her aunt, Betty Stapp of Ocala, Florida, who helped raise her.

Her parents, one sister (Norma Macey) and one infant brother (Bryan Mannin) preceded her in death.

Mrs. Krukewitt worked at Bergner’s in the Pekin Mall as a sales associate for 10 years. She then co-owned and operated with her husband, Creve Coeur Auto Sales for many years, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pekin, where she was a former UMYF leader for four years.

She enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling, and her grandchildren, yard, and dog, Princess.

Local visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2002 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Kirby Funeral Home in Homer, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Ron Eckberg will officiate. Burial will be in Homer G.A.R. Cemetery in Homer.

Memorial contributions may be made to OSF Hospice, 2265 West Altorfer Drive, Peoria, Illinois 61615.
