PEKIN—Riley Edward Byars, 84, of 2220 State St. died at 4:45 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Pekin Hospital. He was formerly of 1511 N. 5th St. in Pekin, Dekalb and Sycamore, Illinois, and Durango, Colorado.
Born September 1, 1918 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to George F. and Lulu D. Cope Byars, he married Alice A. Busch on October 24, 1941 in Sycamore.
He was preceded in death by his wife on June 22, 1999 in Peoria; 1 infant son, Ronald E. Byars; 4 brothers; and 2 sisters.
Surviving are 2 sons, Richard E. (Linda) Byars and Steven E. Byars, both of Pekin; 1 daughter, Donna Jean (Gene) Bacus of Hesperus, Colorado; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchldren; and 1 sister, Virginia Troutman of Sterling, Colorado.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Mr. Byars worked for CILCO from January 1965 until retiring as a journeyman lineman on February 18, 1983.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Pastor Paul Myers will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

VERYL D. "RUSTY" SCHOENFELDT
(1929~2003)
Marquette Heights ~ Veryl Dean "Rusty" Schoenfeldt, 73, of 500 North Main Street, died at 3:46 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003 at his residence.
Born August 10, 1929 in Elma, Iowa to Emil Dean and Ruth Martha Schultz Schoenfeldt, he married Diane D. Stolt on December 8, 1962 in Mankato, Minnesota. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Diane L. (Thomas) Allen, Mary Ann R. (Jeffrey) Arnold and Sheri D. (Michael) Krohe, all of Pekin; one son, Gary D. (Tammy) Schoenfeldt of Warner Robins, Georgia; thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis (Del Lorraine) Schoenfeldt of Byron, Minnesota and Ronald (Margaret) Schoenfeldt of Rapidan, Minnesota and one sister, Vylalou (Robert) Morell of Killeen, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon Schoenfeldt.
Mr. Schoenfeldt retired from Caterpillar, Inc. in 1989 after 25 ˝ years of service, where he was a driver in interplant transportation. He previously worked for Sauder Feed Company in Tremont.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, where he was a former trustee and usher. He also was a member of the men’s club at the church.
He was a member of the UAW Local 974.
He enjoyed detailing cars.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. The Rev. Rodger P. Abatie and Vicar Nathan Woolery will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel and also one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

RUTH H. FLANAGAN
(1927~2003)
PEORIA HTS.—Ruth Haynes Flanagan, 76, of 5533 N. Galena Rd. died at 1:35 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003 at OSF St. Clare Home. She was formerly of Metropolis, Illinois.
Born January 11, 1927 in Mapleton to Charles and Alice Haynes Kiefer, she married Charles E. Flanagan on August 30, 1947 in Peoria.
She was preceded in death by her husband on January 18, 1972 in Peoria; 2 daughters, Betty Ann and Peggy Flanagan; and 1 grandson.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Shirley (Willard) Carroll of Creve Coeur and Barbara (William) Barton of Peoria; 3 sons, Terry (Theresa) Flanagan of East Peoria, Robert (Donna) Flanagan and Thomas Flanagan, both of Creve Coeur; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A homemaker, Mrs. Flanagan enjoyed bingo and puzzles.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Ridge Cemetery in rural Mapleton.

GENE F. BREIT
(1924~2003)
PEKIN ~ Gene Franklin Breit, 78, of 1834 North Shore Drive, died at 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003 at Pekin Hospital.
Born August 4, 1924 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Isaac Franklin and Grace May Gray Breit, he first married Adele M. "Dolly" Venditti on September 10, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died March 28, 1981 in Pekin. She then married Katherine M. Temple Gray on May 28, 1983 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Vincent Breit of Yuma, Arizona and William Hickey of San Diego, California; two step-sons, Larry R. (Avis) Gray of Prescott, Arizona and Leonard I., Jr. (Marcia) Gray of Pekin; one step-daughter, Joyce A. (Wayne) Baker of Creve Coeur; six grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; twenty-two step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Donald (Rose) Breit of Anaheim, California.
He also was preceded in death by his parents, one step-son (Richard) and one sister.
A Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, he retired from the military with 20 years of service as a chief engineer aboard submarines and as a recruiter. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
He later was self-employed and operated with his first wife a Laundromat and dress shop.
He last worked as a supervisor for Midwest Grain Products for many years, where he was an electrician, first in Atchison, Kansas and then in Pekin.
He attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin and was a member of the Christian Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. At First Church of the Nazarene, he helped build the congregations new sanctuary building.
He was a member of the Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1232 in Pekin and the Muddy Mo Squadron, a submarine veterans group in Fayette, Missouri.
He enjoyed woodcarving and making wooden crafts. He loved miniature trains

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin. The Rev. Greg Mason will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel and also one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Savannah Cemetery in Savannah, Missouri, with military rites accorded.

PEKIN—Dorothy Ann Lairson Moore, 67, of 1507 N. 12th St. died at 3:10 a.m., Friday, July 25, 2003 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born September 16, 1935 in Beardstown to James and Flossie Landrith Walters, she married Esme "Gene" Moore in June 1999 in Pekin.
Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters, Kathy (Greg) Beebe and Cindy (Rick) Henry, both of Manito and Patti (Robert, III) Henry of Green Valley; 2 sons; Steve Lairson of Pawnee and Don (Diane) Lairson of Green Valley; 1 step-daughter, Carol (Ken) Brandt of Las Vegas, Nevada; 1 step-son, Roger Moore of Pekin; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Alma A. Anderson of Beardstown; and 2 brothers, Art Ray (Alberta) Walters of Beardstown and Robert (Hillie) Walters of Moline.
She was preceded in death by 4 brothers.
Mrs. Moore had been a business owner in Pekin from 1984 until retiring in 1999.
She was a member of Spring Lake Missionary Church where she also attended Sunday school.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Bradley Ulick will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

PEKIN, IL—Viola Lewis, 83, of 2220 State St. died at 9:08 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Pekin Living and Rehabilitation Center. She was formerly of 1200 Florence Ave., Apt. 13C.
Born December 19, 1918 in Pitkin, Louisiana to James F. and Mary Victoria Sweat Willis, she married William Ellis Lewis on September 9, 1938 in Ferriday, Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband on December 26, 1975 in Pekin; 1 son, Raymond L. "Tex" Lewis on January 8, 1995 in Pekin; 2 daughters, Joy Bell Lewis in 1944 and Mary Ann Westbrook in 1961; 2 granddaughters; and 1 brother, James Madison Willis in June 1993.
Surviving are 1 son, Walter E. Lewis of Kountze, Texas; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A homemaker, Mrs. Lewis was a member of First Christian Church in Pekin and its Martha Circle.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2003 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Christine Bell will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Lake Cemetery in rural Manito.

DORIS L. SCHLIEMAN
(1917 ~ 2003)
PEKIN ~ Doris Lucille Schlieman, 85, of 1300 North Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died Sunday evening, July 20, 2003 at Columbia Saint Mary’s Hospital, Columbia Campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after a brief illness. She was formerly of 1704 Crescent Drive and 1506 Bacon Street, both in Pekin.
Born November 9, 1917 in Kilbourne, Illinois to Dallas and Florence Schoonover Drake, she married Arthur H. Schlieman on August 4, 1936 in Pekin. He died February 3, 1995 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by one son (Ronald Schlieman on February 20, 1960), and two brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna K. Schlieman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one niece, Ruth Ann Jennings of Springfield, Illinois; one grandnephew; and one grandniece.
Mrs. Schlieman began working for the Central Telephone Company in Pekin as a telephone operator and later worked for Sprint as a repair office clerk, retiring with over 15 years of service.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin. She attended Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her daughter.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate.
Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

PEKIN—Inez Marie Smith Morgan, 85, of 2220 State St. died at 2:36 a.m., Friday, July 25, 2003 at Pekin Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born November 4, 1917 in Beardstown to James Earl and Ada Marie Suddeth Smith, she married Walter H. Morgan in Beardstown in 1936.
She was preceded in death by her husband; 1 infant son, James Morgan; 1 daughter, Vicki Morgan; and 2 sisters.
Surviving are 6 sisters, Veda Stark of Versailles, Illinois, Dorene Woodworth and Betty Lemon, both of Pekin, Rosalie Wubker of Virginia, Illinois, Joan Staake of Arenzville, Illinois, and Deloris Walters of Peoria; and 4 brothers, Louis (Phyllis) Smith of Peoria, and Jim Smith, Richard Smith , and Tom Smith, all of Pekin.
Mrs. Morgan was a caretaker, last working as a caretaker for Quality Care in Pekin and previously worked at the Miller Group Home in Pekin.
She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed sewing.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2003 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. A family visitation will be held for one hour prior to her graveside service at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

BRYCE I. ARMSTRONG, SR.

PEKIN ~ Bryce Inzer Armstrong, Sr., 50, of 24 North 20th Street, Pekin, died at 8:52 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003 in the emergency room of Pekin Hospital.
Born March 21, 1953 in Washington, D.C. to Oren Kenneth and Mary Guy Inzer Armstrong, he married Marsha Rose Morris on March 28, 1978 near Chicago. She survives.
Also surviving are his father of Marietta, Georgia; one daughter, April Gold Armstrong of Pekin; one son, Bryce Inzer (Selena) Armstrong, II of Pekin; three granddaughters, Taylor Christine Armstrong, Aliyah Abigail Armstrong, and Chloe Mae Meskimen, all of Pekin; and one sister, Lexan (Ron) Vaden of Tampa, Florida.
His mother preceded him in death on January 4, 2002.
Mr. Armstrong worked as a caregiver for the Barb Arrowsmith family in Pekin for the past several years. He previously worked for several agriculture companies.
He was the lead guitarist for the Cadillac Kids in Chicago.
A former licensed pilot, he enjoyed airplanes. He also enjoyed playing softball, watching car races, and talking.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2003 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Richard W. Jones will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.

ALFREDA PARKER

PEKIN ~ Alfreda Margaret Parker, 88, of 601 Prince Street in Pekin, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria. She formerly resided at 2705 Deveron Circle in Pekin.
Born June 21, 1915 in rural Tazewell County to Alfred A. and Margaret B. Bequeaith Olt, she first married Frank Mahoney. He died in 1959. She then married Marvin Parker. He died in 2001. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one great-granddaughter, Hillary Joy Halliday; four brothers and one sister.
Surviving are one daughter, Joy Lynn (Mike) Hartnett of Pekin; four grandchildren, Michael (Mandy) Hartnett of Creve Coeur, Jamie (Donald) Munter of Pekin, Mari (Ronald "Doc") Halliday of Peoria and Teri (Dick) Cook of East Peoria; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Martha Snider of Pekin.
She and her husband owned and operated Frank Mahoney Plumbing and Heating located at 290 Derby Street in Pekin for many years until his death. She later was a unit clerk at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria for 13 years.
She was of the Catholic faith.
Her private graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
