PEKIN ~ Pauline Evelyn Braden, 88, of 2740 Village Court, died at 6:22 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Pekin Manor.

Born October 4, 1915 in Forest City to Earl and Mabel Hehr Zimmerman, she married Leonard L. Braden on December 28, 1958 in Decatur.

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Barbara (Tom) Bartels McDonald of Ontario, Canada; one step-daughter, Dorita Sue Braden of Tucson, Arizona; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maria Reznick of Carlinville, Helena (John) Witlow of Columbus, Indiana, and Gladys (Don) VanHorn of Pekin; and one brother, Richard (Marlene) Zimmerman of Springfield.

Mrs. Braden worked as a private secretary for Caterpillar, Inc. from 1940 until retiring from the Decatur plant in 1979.

She was a member of the Caterpillar Girls Club and the Lady Shriners. She was a former member of DELPHI.

She enjoyed playing cards and ballroom dancing.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

MAMIE O. LUKE
(1914~2004)

PEKIN ~ Mamie O. Luke, 89, of 2007 State Street, died at 4:25 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2004 at the Washington Christian Village in Washington.

Born May 26, 1914 in Hornersville, Missouri to Henry and Samantha Luter, she married the Rev. Roscoe Eugene Luke on June 2, 1934 in Kennett, Missouri. He died June 25, 1999 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Surviving are two sons, R. Charles (Judy) Luke of East Peoria and Larry R. (Veronica) Luke of Pekin; one daughter, Viola J. “Vi” (Jerry) Smith of New Port Richey, Florida; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lyda VanHorn of Heber Springs, Arkansas.

A homemaker, Mrs. Luke was a member of New Hope General Baptist Church in Silva, Missouri. She attended the East Peoria Church of the Nazarene in East Peoria.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Tim Livengood will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Bay Cemetery in Spring Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Peoria Church of the Nazarene, East Peoria, Illinois 61611 or the Central Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 606 West Glen Avenue, Peoria, Illinois 61614.

JAMES R. DICKIE
(1925~2004)

SOUTH PEKIN ~ James Robert Dickie, 78, of 213 3rd Street, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2004 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin.

Born October 14, 1925 in Litchfield to James Ellis and Erma Florence Rose Dickie, he married Edna Grace Livengood on August 3, 1956 in Pekin. She died November 11, 2001 in South Pekin. He was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Surviving are one step-son, Dale M. Lohnes of Pekin; a nephew, James (Patricia) Purdy of Orion; and a niece, Justine E. (Michael) Pintar of Staunton.

Mr. Dickie worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for 38 years, retiring as a switchman in 1985.

He was a life member of the United Transportation Union.

He enjoyed photography, painting in oil and water, charcoal drawing, and building caboose bird houses.

He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Wake Island during World War II.

Graveside services will be at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.

JOHN K. CULLI
(1921~2004)

EAST PEORIA ~ John Kenneth Culli, 82, of 423 Lilac Lane, died at 5:50 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at Morton Terrace Care Center in Morton. He was formerly of Creve Coeur.

Born September 22, 1921 in Dodds Township, Jefferson County to John Leonard and Bessie T. Stanley Culli, he married Leona Mae Blurton on December 12, 1959 in Spring Bay. She survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Herbert L. (Verda) Culli of Godfrey and Harry S. (Mary Ruth) Culli of Mount Vernon; and one sister, Ruth (Norman) Birkheimer of Mount Vernon.

His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Culli worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years, retiring in July of 1978 as an assembler at building DD in Mossville.

He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local #974 Retirees Club in East Peoria, Kennel Lake Sportsman’s Club in Morton, and the American Legion Post #1234 in Creve Coeur. He was a former member of the Independent Order of Foresters.

He attended Cross Point Church in East Peoria.

He enjoyed fishing.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Dr. George E. Hines will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria, where military rites will be accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Peoria, Illinois.

GEORGE E. SIDELL
(1916~2004)

PEKIN ~ George E. Sidell, 87, of 714 North 2nd Street, died at 5:42 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.

Born October 13, 1916 in Pekin to Charles Loyd and Flora Mae Cohenour Sidell, he married Martha Mary Nelson on February 23, 1935 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, JoAnn Seagraves of Pekin; five sons, George E. “Bud” (Beverly) Sidell, Jr. of Peoria, and William L. (Linda) Sidell, Jerry J. (Barbara) Sidell, Michael J. Sidell, and Kenneth R. (Susan) Sidell, all of Pekin; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William (Dorothy) Sidell and Richard (Shirley) Sidell, both of Pekin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister.

A boilermaker for most of his life, he retired in 1979.

He was the oldest living retired member of Boilermakers Local 60 in Morton.

He enjoyed fishing and camping.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. John M. Duden, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial & Tributes Program, Department 77-3968, Chicago, Illinois 60678-3968.

HIRAM B. "ARCHIE" MOORE
(1928~2004)

MANITO ~ Hiram B. “Archie” Moore, 75, of 33897 East County Road 2180N Died at 7:10 p.m., Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Mason City Area Nursing Home in Mason City.

Born December 8, 1928 in Rushville to William and Nancy Rittenhouse Moore, he married Mary E. King on October 2, 1948 in Versailles. She died July 23, 1977 in Peoria. He then married Verna Urish on July 15, 1985 in Florence, Alabama. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, William Moore of Goodfield; two daughters, Patricia (Dan) Witt of Peoria and Peg (Sam) Plunk of Savanna, Tennessee; three step-sons, Don (Bonnie) Urish of Osage Beach, Missouri, Ben (Carolyn) Urish of Pekin and Jerry (Debbie) Urish of Manito; one step-daughter, Caralee (Jerry) Bohannan of Pekin; three grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Moore of Pekin; one half-brother, William Moore of the State of Washington and one half-sister.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Dennis E. Moore on November 1, 1977 in Pekin.

He worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 45 years and also for Geo. Deppert and Sons in Pekin. He retired in 1990.

He loved to fish and was a member of the Farmington Sportsman’s Club.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Manito, where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004. The Rev. Donald C. Hinkel will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

JAMES M. MAY
(1921~2004)

PEKIN ~ James Mack May, 83, of 1507 State Street, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at his residence.

Born April 5, 1921 in Greenview to Omer P. and Frances Marie Durrett May, he married Helen Marie Gianessi on October 23, 1949 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are his sister, Glenna L. “Tick” Lower of Pekin and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty M. Lucera on June 21, 1996 in Pekin.

A World War II Army Veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater and attained the rank of Sergeant.

He worked for Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 37 years, retiring April 1, 1982.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus Archbishop Schlarman Council 3507; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 916; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1271 and William Schaefer American Legion Post 44, all in Pekin. He also was a member of the Spring Lake Sportsman’s Club and the Eagles Lodge in Peoria. He enjoyed fishing and ballroom dancing. He also enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Parkview Men’s Senior Golf League.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.

His funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. The Rev. Timothy Nolan and Rev. Gerald Verdun will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, with the recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Entombment will be in the Glendale Memorial Gardens Chapel of Dreams, where military rites will be accorded.

A. DALE SWEARINGEN
(1917~2004)

PEKIN ~ A. Dale Swearingen, 71, of 1917 Verbena Street, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, May 17, 2004 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born September 13, 1932 in Neponset to Glen Edgar and Irene Dayle Fisher Swearingen, he married Joan L. Rutledge on June 6, 1958 in Pekin.

Surviving are one son, Dale F. (Billie) Swearingen of Manito; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Allen (Nancy) Swearingen of Hanna City and Eldon Swearingen of Pekin; and six sisters, Evelyn Weber of Castro Valley, California, Leona Siepel of Hanna City, Marilyn Bown of Marquette Heights, Jean Ladwig of Galesburg, Beverly (Billy) Adkins of Pekin and Sandra (Richard) Simmons of Peoria.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Mr. Swearingen worked for Komatsu in Peoria for 43 years, retiring after 25 years in management in 1995.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Pekin where he had been a church trustee, usher, Sunday school teacher, and taught the Kings Kids for several years.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was a Chicago Cubs fan.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. The Rev. Randy Justus will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Forest City.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 1301 South 14th Street, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

JOYCE E. SHALLENBERGER
(1951~2004)

PEKIN ~ Joyce Elaine Shallenberger, 52, of 719 South 8th Street, died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday, May 16, 2004 in the emergency room of OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born June 24, 1951 in Hannibal, Missouri to Raymond William and Donna Lou Morris Autrey, she married Darrell Gene Shallenberger on March 23, 1974 in Pekin.

Surviving are her husband; her parents of Pekin; three daughters, Robbie (Dan) Epkins of Groveland, Kimberly (Kyle) Maurer of Bradenton, Florida and Heather (Brent) Sidell of Pekin; one son, Jeremy (Jennifer) McCreary of Pekin; 5 grandchildren; one sister, Donna (Steve) Alessi of Delavan; and her grandmother, Lucille Morris of Pekin.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Wendy Kay McCreary.

Mrs. Shallenberger had worked as a medical coder at Pekin Internal Medicine from 1991 to 2002.

She was a member of the Victoria Shrine #83, White Shrine of Jerusalem in Pekin, where she had held every station, including Worthy High Priestess in 1992-93 and Worthy Treasurer for several years. She was also a member of Celestial City Chapter #333, Order of the Eastern Star in Pekin, where she had served as Esther for several years. She was also a member of and had held several stations in the Sunbeam Temple #217, Pythian Sisters of Illinois in Pekin.

She was a member of the Normandale Reformed Church in Pekin and enjoyed gardening.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Harmen Heeg will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the funeral home where a White Shrine service will be held at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Family Health Center Helping Hearts, 19 Olt Avenue, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

RAYBURN E. RIPPER
(1914~2004)

PEKIN ~ Rayburn Ernest Ripper, 89, of #1 Terry Court, died at 10:58 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004 in the emergency room of Pekin Hospital.

Born September 21, 1914 in Cincinnati Township, Tazewell County to Carl and Anna Marie Stoetzer Ripper, he married Gladys Viola Crist on March 24, 1961 in Pekin. She died April 6, 2000 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Esther Diefendorf and Olivia Schilling) and one brother (Marvin Ripper).

Surviving is one brother, Nathan F. Ripper of Pekin.

He was a 1932 graduate of Pekin Community High School.

Mr. Ripper worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 35 years, retiring July 1997 as an inspector at the research building in East Peoria. He previously worked as the American Distilling Company in Pekin for one year.

He was a member of Saint Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin , United Auto Workers Local 974 Retirees in East Peoria, and the Caterpillar Retirees Club.

He attended Second Reformed Church in Pekin.

He enjoyed gardening, doing carpentry work, and reading the Bible.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Second Reformed Church in Pekin, where visitation will be one hour before services. The Rev. Dr. Harmen D. Heeg and the Rev. Ralph H. Cordes will officiate. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.
