DARRELL W. BENNETT
(1950~2004)

EAST PEORIA ~ Darrell W. Bennett, 54, of 512 Indian Circle, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at his residence.

He was born February 15, 1950 in Christopher to John E. and Maude Lucille Ramsey Bennett.

Surviving are his mother, M. Lucille Dornon of East Peoria ; two daughters, Heidi A. Bennett of Chicago and Stephanie N. Bennett of East Peoria ; one son, Shaun M. Bennett of East Peoria ; two grandchildren, Remi M. Bennett and Elijah M. Bennett, both of East Peoria and one brother, Michael (Kathy) Roberts of California.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietname War and attained the rank of Sergeant.

He retired March 1, 2003 from Caterpillar, Inc. after 30 years of service, where he was a machinist at the Mossville plant. Following retirement, he worked for O’Reilly Auto Parts as a parts delivery man and last worked Tuesday.

Mr. Bennett coached girl’s softball in East Peoria for than 20 years and was an avid bowler.

He was a member of the UAW Local 974 Retirees. He also was a member of the Romeo’s Retirees Club.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Krista L. Brockman will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fon du Lac Cemetery in East Peoria, where military rites will be accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund for his grandchildren, Remi and Elijah Bennett, in care of Union Planters Bank in Washington.

BETTY JEAN DOUGLAS
(1929~2004)

CREVE COEUR ~ Betty Jean Douglas, 75, of 104 Lewis Court in Creve Coeur, died at 8:39 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.

Born March 12, 1929 in Peoria to Victor H. and Beatrice Barrett Inskeep, she married George Eugene Brady on April 6, 1947 . She later married Ellis Newton Douglas on July 1, 1995 in Creve Coeur. He survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Thomas (Kim) Brady of Pekin, Michael (Pam) Brady of Maryville, Blake (Marla) Brady of Pekin and Royce (Cindy) Brady of Byron; one step-daughter, Donna (Don) Sattem of Omaha, Nebraska; two step-sons, Jim (Carol) Douglas of Lincoln, Nebraska and Gary (Nellie) Douglas of East Peoria; sixteen grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; fourteen step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Jeraldine (Jim) Kelly of East Peoria.

She was preceded in death by one step-son and two brothers.

A homemaker, she previously worked as a beautician.

She was a member of Creve Coeur Christian Church.

She was an Avon collector.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Creve Coeur Christian Church. The Rev. John E. Plunkett will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and also 30 minutes before services Friday at the church. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.

Memorial contributions may be made to Creve Coeur Christian Church, 101 South Thorncrest Avenue, Creve Coeur, Illinois 61610.

LOUISE KOEHLER
(1909~2004)

PEKIN ~ Louise Jean Koehler, 94, a resident of B.G. Manor in Bowling Green, Ohio since February 2003, died there Friday, June 11, 2004. She was formerly of Gary, Indiana, Pekin and Largo, Florida.

Born September 14, 1909 in Martinton, Illinois to William Walter and Melvina Shinnamon Giroux, she married Charles Anthony Koehler on September 13, 1930 in Gary, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 15, 1969 ; 1 brother; and her twin sister.

Surviving are 1 son, Charles Allen (Patricia) Koehler of Bowling Green; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Koehler last worked as a machine operator for the Anderson Company in Gary, Indiana from 1951 to 1968. Previously, she had worked as a dental assistant.

She was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gary.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. The Rev. Robert A. Scott will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 14, 2004 at Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home in Bowling Green.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Glaucoma Research Foundation, 490 Post Street, Suite 1427, San Francisco, CA 94102.

Local arrangements are through Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel.

FRANK SANTANNA
(1915~2004)

PEKIN ~ Frank Santanna, 89, of Temple, Texas, died 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 10, 2004 at his residence. He formerly of South Pekin . He had resided the past year with his son in Temple, Texas.

Born October 4, 1915 in Mexico, he married Mary Gonzalez. She died December 13, 1988 in Pekin.

Surviving are three sons, Mario (Deborah) Santanna of Pekin, Franzino “Gino” (Sherry) Santanna of Temple, Texas and Desi (Gloria) Santanna of Richland, Washington; three daughters, Mary Lou VanDerveer of Cincinnati, Ohio, Connie (Eddie) Hill of Peoria and Angela (Charles) Darling of Pekin and many grandchildren.

His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Elder Darren Williams will officiate. Cremation has been accorded.

STEVEN A. SMALL
(1946~2004)

PEKIN ~ Steven Arthur Small, 58, of 1002 Park Avenue, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Born May 11, 1946 in Washington to James Chester and Laura Elizabeth Wernsman Small, he married Vicki Sue Gilliland on April 5, 1990 in Springfield. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Washington ; one son, Eric (Michelle) Small of Spring Bay; one daughter, Angela Adams of Germantown Hills; two step-daughters, Jessica S. (Mark) Meeks of Bartonville and Maegan M. Gilliland House of Pekin ; one step-son, Richard A. Davis, Jr. of Pekin; eight grandchildren; two brothers, James Small of Peoria and Michael (June) Small of Washington; and one sister, Nancy (Tom) Mcclernon of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

His father preceded him in death on May 11, 2002.

A United States Army veteran of the Viet Nam War, he served from January 31, 1966 to November 3, 1967 .

Mr. Small worked construction in the area for numerous years, working at River City Construction Company in East Peoria, Houlihan and Associates in Bartonville, and Allied Construction Services in Peoria. He last worked for Prairie Construction Systems, Inc. in East Peoria for many years as a foreman, last working July 28, 2003.

He was a member Carpenters Local No. 183 in East Peoria and Faith Baptist Church in Pekin and its men’s bible study. He also was a member and past president of the Peoria Academy of Science/Geology section.

He enjoyed working with stained glass, wood carving, and gardening.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. David Wetterlund will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wycliff Bible Translators for his step-daughter Maegan’s missionary work.

DANIEL L. DWYER
(1923~2004)

PEKIN ~ Daniel Louis Dwyer, 81, of 15664 Furrow Road, died at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Born May 20, 1923 in Pekin to Ruben F. and Lolita Everwein Dwyer, he married Betty Ann Furrow on May 14, 1949 in Green Valley. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Penny K. (Fred) Haberkamp of Long Grove; three grandchildren, Dawn R. (Kenny) Kolman of Hainesville, Alan M. Haberkamp and Brian T. Haberkamp, both of Long Grove and one sister, Patricia A. Zimmerman of North Ft. Myers, Florida.

He was preceded in death by one infant son, Patrick L. Dwyer.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and attained the rank of Private First Class.

He retired from Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville after 40 years of service as a die maker in the wire mill.

He was a devoted member of First Assembly of God in Pekin, where he was a longtime Deacon and Usher.

He was railroad enthusiast and an avid NASCAR and Tony Stewart fan.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Assembly of God in Pekin. The Rev. Quinn McKenzie will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God, 1209 North Parkway Drive, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

DOSSIE E. "DOT" WHEELER
(1906~2004)

PEKIN ~ Dossie Edna Wheeler, 97, of 190 East Queenwood Road, Morton, died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Morton Villa Care Center. She was formerly of 444 South Parkway Drive in Pekin.

Born September 12, 1906 in Pope County, Illinois to Oscar Eli and Sarah Ethel Hodge Babb, she married Samuel Wheeler on April 17, 1926 in Caruthersville, Missouri. He died February 21, 1969 in Washington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sons (Wesley Wheeler, William “Don” Wheeler, and Norman Wheeler), two grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Lyndell (Marge) Wheeler of Pittsburg, Illinois, Kenneth H. “Herb” (Marlena) Wheeler of Pekin, and Sam, Jr. (Linda) Wheeler of Creve Coeur; one daughter, Linda L. (Calvin) Thorne of Glasford; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Swift of Portageville, Missouri.

A homemaker, Mrs. Wheeler was of the Baptist faith.

She was a former member of the September Club at Faith Baptist Church in Pekin.

She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and crocheting.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Richard H. Brienen will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

BARBARA L. STRONG
(1935~2004)

PEKIN ~ Barbara Lee Strong, 68, of 343 South 4th Street, Apartment 410, died at 6:55 p.m. Monday, August 2, 2004 at her residence.

She was born October 21, 1935 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Charles H. and Eleanor Chase Mitchell. Her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Dale, Jr. (Kim) Strong of Marquette Heights and Charles Henry Mitchell Strong of Flint, Michigan; three daughters, Shelly A. (Jeff) Fennern of Eldorado, Texas, Cheryl A. (Jack) Todd and Lisa Marie Knox, both of Fort Benton, Montana; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson and two brothers, Charles H., III (Bonnie) Mitchell of Macquoketa, Iowa and Chase Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nevada.

A homemaker, she was an active member of First Baptist Church in Pekin.

Her graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. No visitation is planned. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

ROBERT G. YOST
(1938~2004)

PEKIN ~ Robert G. Yost, 66, of 119 Arrow Street, died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, August 2, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.

Born January 23, 1938 in Clay City to Charles Leon and Margaret Delaney Yost, he married Janice S. Herring on July 14, 1979 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert Justin “Rob” Yost of Pekin and Troy H. Dwyer of Glasford; one daughter, Brenda Kay Yost of East Peoria; three grandchildren, Ryan Clemons of Pekin, Brandon Clemons of East Peoria and Isabella Gail Yost of Pekin; one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Kay Clemons of Pekin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents, Tom and Mildred Jordan, who raised him; one daughter, Rhonda Gail Yost on January 3, 1982 in Pekin; one brother and one sister.

He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietname War.

He retired from Caterpillar, Inc. in 1999 after 33 years, where he was a mechanical engineer in East Peoria. He and his wife own and operate Mixed Nuts Karaoke D.J.

He was a member of the George M. Maple AMVETS Post 235 and William Schaefer American Legion Post 44, both in Pekin. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 916 in Pekin and Manito Masonic Lodge 476, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Charles W. “C.J” Plogger will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the funeral home, with Moose rites at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin, where military honors will be accorded by the Pekin Area Ceremonial Team.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mooseheart, 155 South International Drive, Mooseheart, Illinois 60539-1100 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

GENE KIME
(1923~2004)

PEKIN ~ Samuel “Gene” Kime, 81, of 1401 Delray St. died at 8:45 p.m., Sunday, August 1, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.

Born July 5, 1923 in Canton, Illinois to Samuel and Bessie Kime, he married Elvira Guile, who died in 1966. He then married Anna Pribble, who died on December 12, 1995. And then he married Virginia Hallar Alexander on March 15, 2003 in Pekin.

He was also preceded in death by 2 daughters, 1 son, 3 grandchildren, and 2 sisters.

Surviving are his wife; 5 daughters, Phyllis (John) Rodcay of Washington, Illinois, Charlene “Bunny” Blasdel of South Pekin, Helen (Allan) Armentrout of North Pekin, Patricia (Tom) Meno of Naperville, Illinois, and Karla Alexander of Pekin; 6 sons, James (Janice) Pribble, Jr., Frank Guile, Rick (Lisa) Alexander, Kevin (Connie Jo) Alexander, and Kyle (Lindy) Alexander, all of Pekin, and Charles (Bev) Guile of Wisconsin; 31 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kime worked for Fruehauf Trailer Company for 30 years, retiring as a welder in 1983. He also owned and operated the Cottage Café in Pekin for several years.

He was a member of Pekin Moose Lodge #916, where he was also a cook for many years.

He was an avid Bingo player.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2004 at his church. Rev. Michael McLeod will officiate. Visitation will be form 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel and 1 hour prior to services Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
