ROLLIN D. "ROD" MONROE
(1921~2004)

PEKIN ~ Rollin D. "Rod" Monroe, 82, of 7310 North Buckley Drive, Hayward, Wisconsin died peacefully Tuesday morning, July 20, 2004 at his residence. He was formerly of Pekin.

Born September 20, 1921 in Ashland, Illinois to Samuel S. and Minnie F. Christie Monroe, he married Margaret A. "Marge" Houston on June 14, 1945 in Hernando, Mississippi. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Christie D. (David) Pruski of Redmond, Washington and Connie J. Monroe of Tucson, Arizona; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Celeste A. Houlihan on March 10, 2003 in Tucson, Arizona; three sisters and four brothers.

He was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran.

He worked in mechanical maintenance for Commonwealth Edison for 37 years, retiring in 1982 as a supervisor at the Powerton Station in Pekin. He then enjoyed 22 years of living on the lake in Wisconsin during the summer and in the desert of Arizona in the winters. Rod loved life and lived it to the fullest.

He was a member of the Powerton Playboys and was a former member and past president of the Powerton Club. He was a life and 55-year member of Empire Lodge #126 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois in Pekin and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1271 in Pekin.

He was a former member of the First Christian Church in Pekin.

Rod was a kind and wonderful friend, father, grandfather and husband. He was married to Marge, the love of his life for 59 years.

He enjoyed doing yardwork.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens In Pekin.

LAVINA M. HANCOCK
(1923~2004)

Pekin ~ Lavina Mae Hancock, 81, of 1520 El Camino Drive, died at 10:02 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Pekin Hospital. She was formerly of 1912 Court Street in Pekin.

Born May 25, 1923 in Bloomington to William John and Blanche Leona Woods Ash, she married Joseph L. Hancock on December 7, 1944 in Pekin. He died January 13, 1994 in Pekin. She also was preceded in death by one step-daughter, Dortha Colson; one sister and her stepfather, Floyd Adams, who helped raise her.

Surviving are one son, Joseph Richard (Candyce) Hancock of Park Ridge; one daughter, Linda Jo (Arthur) McCoy of Pekin; one step-daughter, Josephine Hartter of Mackinaw; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother, Richard W. (Emogene) Ash of Pekin.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Pekin. She also was a member of the Rebekah Circle of King’s Daughters.

Private graveside rites will be Saturday at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. The Rev. John Worsham will officiate. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

WILBUR L. DAVIS
(1925~2004)

PEKIN ~ Wilbur LaVerle “Web” Davis, 78, of 1305 North 12th Street, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2004 at his home.

Born November 10, 1925 in Pekin to George William and Katie Ann Vance Davis, he married Marie Shanklin on May 2, 1954 in Pekin. She died October 10, 2001 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one sister (Dorothy Kee) and one infant brother (George Davis).

Surviving are two sons, LaVerle J. “Jim” (Kathy) Davis and Steven J. Davis, both of Pekin; one step-son, Raymond W. (Edna) Yeakel of Pekin; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one brother, James E. “Chink” (Judy) Davis of Pekin; and one sister, Eunice L. Monroe of Pekin.

A United States Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from August 23, 1951 to May 26, 1953. He attained the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Davis worked as a quart machine operator for Soldwedel’s Dairy in Pekin and later for Borden’s Dairy in Pekin until it’s closing in 1980. He then worked in the dock area at Prairie Farms Dairy in Peoria, retiring November 10, 1990.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #916 in Pekin and was a former member of the Paul Towne Memorial AMVETS Post #169 in North Pekin.

An avid fisherman and bowler, he bowled in the Moose League for many years.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 11, 2004 at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where a Moose ritual will be held at 4 p.m.

RUBY I. CVIK
(1913~2004)

PEORIA ~ Ruby Irene Cvik, 91, of 2501 Allentown Road in Pekin, died at 2:25 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin. She was a formerly a longtime resident of 3129 N. Finnell in Peoria.

Born June 30, 1913 in Peoria to Orville and Bertha Gramlich Fletcher, she married Henry W. Cvik on August 31, 1930 in Eureka. He died March 23, 1982 in Peoria. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Morgan.

Surviving are one son, Henry W., Jr. “Bill” (Helen) Cvik of Pekin; one daughter, Catherine C. (Jerry) Pemberton of Pekin; six grandchildren, Steven (Mary) Cvik of St. Louis, Missouri, Theresa (Rick) Vogel of Pekin, Cheryl Lynch, Cynthia Cvik, both of Nrh, Texas, Kurt (Amy) Pemberton of Las Vegas, Nevada and Deanna (Gary) Meyers of Green Valley and ten great-grandchildren.

She worked for Dr. William Campbell in Peoria for 30 years.

She was a member of the Peoria Heights Congregational Church in Peoria Heights.

She was a member of a Bunko club in Peoria and formerly was a Woodrow Wilson School volunteer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2004 at the Peoria Heights Congregational Church in Peoria Heights. The Rev. Phillip A. Meagher will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel and also 30 minutes before services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.

JANICE K. GRIGGS
(1951~2004)

CREVE COEUR—Janice Kay Griggs, 52, of 125 Elmridge Place, Apt. #2, died at 11:41 a.m., Saturday, October 2, 2004 at her home.

She was born October 18, 1951 in Charleston, West Virginia to Jack and Etta Mae Snodgrass Buckley.

Surviving are her mother of Bangor, Maine; 2 daughters, Tracy (Joel) Grant of Underwood, Minnesota and Diana (Brent) Hieronimus of Fergus Falls, Minneosta; and 3 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

She was employed as a sales associate at the Morton Travel Center since 2001, last working on September 30, 2004.

Ms. Griggs enjoyed working out.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur chapel. The Rev. Krista L. Brockman will officiate. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

ROGER SMITH
(1955~2004)

GREEN VALLEY ~ Roger Bradley Smith, 49, of 106 West Main Street, died at 7:22 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born June 17, 1955 in Peoria to Harold H. and Dona L. Harmon Smith, he married Norma J. Crociani on August 31, 1974 in Bellevue, Illinois. She survives.

Also surviving are his parents of Pekin; one son, Justin Bradley (Elizabeth) Smith of Morton; two daughters, Jamie Nichole (Shane) Gregory of Pekin and Jaclyn Jean Smith of Peoria; five grandchildren, Haley Nichole Gregory, M.J. “Rocky” Fleming, Bradon Ray Gregory, Aaliyah Capri Fleming and Hannah Marie Gregory; one sister, Debbie (Rick) Cropin of Princeville; one brother, Jeff (Lisa) Smith of Roanoke and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gail Bruce Smith.

A correctional officer for the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department for more than 25 years, he last worked at the Tazewell County Justice Center in Pekin. He also was a part time police officer with the San Jose Police Department. He previously worked as a police officer for the North Pekin, South Pekin and Manito Police Departments. He was a graduate of the Illinois State Police Academy for correctional officers and currently served the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department as their Range Master and served on the Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard.

He was an avid hunter, and especially enjoyed duck hunting with his black Labrador retriever, Scout. He also enjoyed fishing and boating on the Illinois River.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Tazewell Police Officers Lodge No. 98. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 916 in Pekin; Tremont Sportsman’s Club; Duck’s Unlimited; Delta Waterfowl and the Big Lake Duck Club in Frederick.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial with full police honors will be in Green Valley Cemetery in Green Valley. The family will receive friends at the Pekin Moose Lodge following Burial.

Memorial contributions may be made to an educational fund for his grandchildren in care of the Green Valley Office of the San Jose Tri-County Bank, 101 West Main, Green Valley, Illinois 61534.

ESME E. MOORE
(1925~2004)

PEKIN ~ Esme Eugene “Dempsey” Moore, 78, of 1507 N. 12th St., died at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Born December 23, 1925 in Rushville, Illinois to William and Nancy Rittenhouse Moore, he married Emma Lou Hosford on October 20, 1946 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. She died on May 15, 1998 in Pekin. He then married Dorothy Ann Walters Lairson in June 1999 in Pekin. She died July 25, 2003 in Peoria.

Also preceding him in death was 1 brother, Hiram “Archie” Moore.

Surviving are 1 son, Roger D. Moore of Pekin; 1 daughter, Carol (Ken) Brandt of Las Vegas; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and 1 half brother, William Ingles of Washington state.

Mr. Moore worked in the steel mill at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 30 years, retiring from the ARC shop in 1986.

He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European theater as a paratrooper with both the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles”.

He was a member of the Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1232 in Pekin, William Schaefer American Legion Post #44 in Pekin for over 30 years and, the Pekin Moose Lodge #916.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Donald Hinkel will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. military graveside honors will be provided by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.

Family and friends will gather at the Pekin Moose Lodge following the Burial for a time of food and fellowship.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

RAYMOND D. HALL
(1953~2004)

PEKIN ~ Raymond Dennis Hall, 51, of 1024 Market St. died at 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at his home.

He was born July 10, 1953 in Chadwick, Missouri to Raymond F. and Mary Ellen Norton Hall.

Surviving are his mother of Pekin; 1 sister, Wanda (David) Thomas of Marquette Heights; 3 brothers, Frankie Lee (Karen) Norton, William Joseph (Patty) Norton, and James Henry Hall, all of Pekin.

He was preceded in death by his father on November 11, 1974 in St. Louis.

Mr. Hall was an avid fisherman and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin chapel. Rev. Lester Hall will officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Pekin, 1101 Veerman St., Pekin, IL 61554.

CARY O. RYAN
(1923~2004)

CREVE COEUR ~ Cary Onn Ryan, 80, of 819 Highview Court, died at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.

Born November 18, 1923 in Beardstown to James and Deana Christina Herburg Ryan, he married Letha Marie Lovekamp on May 22, 1949 in Arenzville. She died August 30, 1996 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son (Timothy Stephen Ryan on July 27, 1973 in Peoria), six brothers, and three sisters.

Surviving are one son, Cary Patrick “Pat” (Dawn) Ryan of East Peoria; one daughter, Christina Marie (Larry) Paluska of East Peoria; three grandchildren, Caitlin Marie Paluska of Lake Forest, Maia Marie Paluska and Timothy Patrick Ryan, both of East Peoria; and two sisters, Lillian Marshall of Beardstown and Dena Louise Foltz of Tucson, Arizona, who died Wednesday, September 22, 2004.

A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he had served aboard the USS Boyle.

Mr. Ryan worked as a surveyor with the United States Army Corps of Engineers at the Peoria office for over 30 years, retiring in 1972. He later worked out of Carpenters Local 644 in Pekin for 10 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Tremont Sportsman’s Club and the National Rifle Association.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the Arenzville North Cemetery in Arenzville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel.

RAYMOND D. EWING
(1957~2004)

MANITO ~ Raymond Dean “Ray” Ewing, 46, of 8743 Oak Lane died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at Pekin Hospital from complications from a brain tumor.

He was born December 10, 1957 in Pekin to Henry Lawrence and LaVerne Louise Anna Volk Ewing.

Surviving are his mother of Pekin; one son, Austin M. Ewing at home; one sister, Debbie L. (Mike Straker) Loy of Green Valley; one brother, Rick L. (Marcia) Ewing of Pekin; two nieces; one nephew; two great-nephews; and his friend, Vickie Johnson, who helped care for him.

He was preceded in death by his father on July 9, 1972 in Pekin.

Mr. Ewing worked for Frantz Chemical Company in Pekin for 10 years. He then worked as a concrete finisher for many years, last working for Wiseman Concrete in rural Pekin in the fall of 2002. He also was a self-employed carpenter for many years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Michael McLeod will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sand Prairie Cemetery in rural Green Valley.

Memorial contributions may be made to a custodial account for his son, Austin, in care of the Herget National Bank, 33 South 4th Street, Pekin, Illinois 61555-0839.
