DENNIS L. 'TINY' SPOTANSKI

Sesser - Dennis L. "Tiny" Spotanski, 53, Sesser, died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, June 2 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sesser with Father Steven Poole and Father Wilburt Iffert officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Sunday at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home.

Mr. Spotanski was born May 4, 1950 in Christopher, the son of Leroy and Elaine (Harmon) Spotanski.

Mr. Spotanski worked for the Franklin County Highway Department, Freeman Coal and Consol Coal Co.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mr. Spotanski was a Hall of Fame member of the Sesser-Valier Outdoorsman Club.

He also served as a trustee for the Goode Township.

Mr. Spotanski is survived by his parents of Sesser; two children, Amy Spotanski and fiance, Kirk Tipton, Marco Island, Fla., and Todd Spotanski, Sesser; three nephews, Dennis Harris, Doug Harris and wife Tricia, Matt Spotanski and wife, Dawn; one niece, Tricia Higgins and husband, Barry; one brother, David Spotanski and wife, Anita, Waltonville and one sister, Vicki Kloepper and husband, Joe of Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials for Mr. Spotanski be given to the Sesser-Valier Outdoorsman Club and will be accepted at the funeral home.

THELMA CARLISLE

Fort Scott, Kansas - Thelma Carlisle, 81, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott, Kan.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1921, in Benton, the daughter of William Ross Jones and Flora Belle Hall Jones.

She married Carl A. Carlisle in 1937. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Emanuel Baptist Church in Fort Scott.

Mrs. Carlisle loved gardening, flowers and table games. She enjoyed being active with youth in church work and teaching youths in Sunday School.

Survivors include four sons, Carl Eugene Carlisle and Ronald Owen Carlisle, both of Fort Scott, Edward Leon Carlisle, Portage, Ind. and Larry Ross Carlisle of Rota, Spain. Also surviving are three sisters, Lavenia Auten, Mesa, Ariz. Letha Ward Schereville, Ind. and Fleta Culbreth, DeMotte, Ind; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Evelyn Carlisle, two sisters, Oma Roberts and infant Ruby Ellen Jones, and a brother Melvin Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Poulson Funeral Home in Benton. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Thompsonville. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. until time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

The family received friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today in the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, in Fort Scott, where son Larry Carlisle led a short devotion at 7:30 p.m. during visitation. Memorials are suggested to Emanuel Baptist Church and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P. O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.

RUBY MARTIN

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - Ruby Martin, 92, of Cape Girardeau, a former Thompsonville resident, died at 10:20 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2003, at the Chateau Girardeau, Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Price officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in the East Fork Cemetery, West Frankfort at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 4.

Mrs. Martin was born Jan. 8, 1907, in Franklin County, the daughter of Arthur L. and Ida M. (Ing) Rotramel. She married Randall Martin on May 28, 1947 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1967.

Mrs. Martin was an active member of the Antioch United Methodist Church, West Frankfort. She retired from the Franklin Hospital in 1977 where she worked as a registered nurse. She was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and had attained the rank of Lieutenant.

She is survived by two sisters, Marian Densford, Green Valley, Ariz, Wanda Rotramel, Huntington Beach, Calif., several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Carl and Wayne Rotramel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.

RUBY MARTIN

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Ruby Martin, 96, of Cape Girardeau, a former Thompsonville resident, died at 10:20 p.m., Friday, May 30, 2003, at the Chateau Girardeau, Cape Girardeau, Mo.

REX EUGENE PIKE

Christopher - Rex Eugene Pike, 81, departed this life Sunday, June 1, 2003.

Mr. Pike, a graduate of CCHS class of 1940, served in the European Theater during World War II. He lived in Los Angeles following his discharge from service, returning to Christopher in 1962, following the death of his father in 1961.

He was a 57-year member of the Christopher American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Moina Walden Pike, mother and father A. A. and Goldie Pike, two brothers, Warren Ross Pike and Elbert Neil Pike.

He is survived by three sisters, Lena R. Ragland and Ireta D. Starnes of West Frankfort and Alice Bernice Finkelstein of St. Louis; a stepson and his wife, David and Carol Walden of Athens, Tenn; good friend David Isom; grandchildren; nephews; nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

INMAN 'BUCK' MATHIS

McLeansboro - Inman "Buck" Mathis, 97, died at 12:25 p.m. Monday June 2, 2003, at Enfield Health Care Center in Enfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, with the Revs. Robert Sefried and John Lee, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery, Macedonia. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p. m. Wednesday to the funeral home.

Mr. Mathis was born in Broughton on July 9, 1905, the son of Lewis Edward and Lora (Marsh) Mathis. He married Bessie (Darnell) Mathis and she died on Dec. 31, 1993.

He was a retired farmer and and a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, Macedonia.

Survivors include a sister, Lena Page of West Frankfort; son-in-law, P.G. Dye of Macedonia; nieces and nephews, Ava Laverne Miller of McLeansboro, Marion Ingram of Gurnee, Bill Ingram of Albion, Casey Moore of Macedonia, Hugh Moore of Mississippi, Jeanine Moore of Montana, Novena Forbes of Oregon, Harold Mathis of Troy, Edward Mathis of Florida, Phyllis Cloud of Gillespie, Emaline Dorris of West Frankfort, Lewis Page of Mulkeytown, Joe Page of the Philippines, Estel Beatty of Ewing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and two sisters.

ROBERT AUSTIN BAKER

Benton - Robert Austin Baker, 66, died at 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2003, in Herrin Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2003 in the Union Funeral Home West Frankfort, with Everett Tabor officiating. Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday until time of service at the funeral home.

Mr. Baker was born in West Frankfort on July 3, 1936, the son of Donald and Lissie (Thompson) Baker.

He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Tabor of Benton, LaDonna White of Ewing; one son, Virgil Baker of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Donald Baker of Sweet Home, Ore.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Shirley Van De Walle, and a brother, Phillip.

MARTHA LOU VANDYKE

Ohio - Martha Lou Smith VanDyke, 64, went to be with the Lord Monday, June 2, 2003, at Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.

She was survived by her husband of 36 years, Everett VanDyke; daughters, Kristy (David) Litteral of Lancaster, Ohio, Cheryl Finnicum of Sunbury, Ohio, Beth (Chet) Mobley of Delaware, Ohio and Robin VanDyke of Sunbury, Ohio; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary (Elvin) Schwind, Fay (Robert) Krapf, Norma (Thurmond) Page, Joyce (Bob) Thomas and Linda (Lou) Ackerman; brothers, Ralph (Virginia) Smith, Robert (Lorene) Smith and Jack (Frances) Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. VanDyke was retired from Equitable Insurance processing department, data entry. She was Past Worthy Matron Corinthian Chapter 393 O.E.S. Member and former Chaplain Square Wheels Square Dance Club.

Martha will always be remembered for her smile, laughter and keen sense of humor with her Happy Christian Spirit.

She was a member of the Worthington Christian Church, 8145 N. High Street, Columbus, Ohio, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, with the Rev. Jim Dempey officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (Corinthian O.E.S. Service, 8 p.m.) at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, Worthington Chapel, 515 High St., Worthington, Ohio. Burial will be at Kingwood Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Worthington Christian Church in her memory.

JOHN E. WYATT

West Frankfort - John E. Wyatt, 82, departed this life Monday, June 2, 2003 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, June 5, at the Stone Funeral Home in West Fankfort with the Rev. Ron Creemens officiating. Interment will be in Tower Heights Cemetery. Friends of the family may call from 6 p. m. to 9 p.m. on Wedneday evening. Military graveside honors will be conducted by members of VFW Post 5764 and Orient American Legion Post 1961. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by Frankfort Lodge #567 AF & AM. For those who wish, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, and will be accepted at the funeral home at any time.

John was born Dec. 1, 1920, in West Frankfort, a son of Clarence and Alma (Davis) Wyatt. He married Geneva V. Harper on July 3, 1943 in Hopkinsville, Ky. She survives.

John worked for the L. B. Price Mercantile Co. for 45 years, traveling over a wide area making friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Mr. Wyatt was a Navy veteran of World War II, a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack, and served on the Yorktown and Independence in the Pacific area of war, earning the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He and his wife Geneva, are longtime members of the Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort.

He was an avid woodworker, and an active member of Frankfort Masonic Lodge #567 AF & AM. A Past Master of the Lodge, and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 14th Southern District of the State of Illinois, he was also an honorary member of several area Masonic Lodges as well. Mr. Wyatt was a Past Post Commander of the Boy Scouts, and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of VFW Post 5764 of West Frankfort, American Legion Post, 1961 and the D. A. V.

In addition to his wife Geneva, he is survived by three sons, John Wyatt II and wife Judy of Anna, Jerry Wyatt and wife Linda of Blairsville, Mike Wyatt and wife Dottie of West Frankfort; grandchildren, John Wyatt III and wife Susanne, Jason Wyatt and wife Jennifer, Jaret Wyatt, George Wyatt, Carla Mohring, Dave Wyatt and wife Johnna, Dorie Follmann and husband Barry; great-grandchildren, Alexi and Cameron Wyatt, Josh and Mackenzie Mohring; a brother, Claude Wyatt and wife Virginia of Dalton; sister, Juanita Bacon of Alpine, CA; sister-in-law, Lucille Wyatt of West Frankfort.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Gayle Patrick, brothers Robert Thomas Wyatt and Clarence Wyatt, Jr., a sister, Annabelle Marshall and daughter-in law, Margaret Wyatt.

S. HAZEL McKINNEY

Peoria - S. Hazel McKinney, 96, died at 4:56 a.m. at the Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Dwight Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Saturday until time of service to the funeral home.

Mrs. McKinney was born July 4, 1906, in Benton, the daughter of Daniel and Eliza (Kearney) Smith. She married Lawrence McKinney on Oct. 4, 1924, in Benton. He died on Feb. 2, 1975.

She was formerly employed by the Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville for 15 years until her retirement in 1965. She was a member of the Eakin Grove Baptist Church in Benton.

Survivors include one daughter, Billie Fite and husband Baxter Jr. of Peoria; two grandchildren, Baxter Fite III and wife Marilou of Peoria, Marsha Zielinski and husband Mark of Peoria.

Memorials may be made to Methodist Hospice Services and will be accepted at the funeral home at any time.
