SIMPSON -- C. R. Miller, 80, died at 11:40 p. m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at home. Services will be at 1 p. m. today at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in Gilead Cemetery, with military rites by Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222 of Vienna. Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. today at the funeral home. Rhoda Mae Cline

MARION -- Rhoda Mae Cline, 81, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord at 5:45 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Rhoda was the daughter of Henry A. and Zella M. (Bedwell) Spence, and was born Sept. 25, 1922, in the Wolf Creek Community in Williamson County. Her parents preceded her in death as did her stepmother, Flossie Spence. She was united in marriage to Robert Frank Cline on Aug. 19, 1944, in Marion, and together sharing over 59 years of marriage. For many years Rhoda was a switchboard relief operator at the Illinois State Office Building in Marion, making many good friends down through the years. She was a member of Parish Park Baptist Church of Marion and a former longtime member and children's Sunday school teacher at Center Baptist Church of Crab Orchard. Rhoda's commitment to her family was exceeded only by her commitment to her Lord. She was a constant source of encouragement to her family and took great pride in their achievements. Rhoda will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Rhoda is survived by her husband, Robert F. 'Pete' Cline of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis Ann and Harold Dean Hill of Marion and Brenda Mae and Larry Wall of Marion; four grandchildren and their spouses, Brad and Stacey Hill of Huntsville, Ala., Don and Terra Hill of Crab Orchard, Christina and Louie Johnson of Crab Orchard, and Doug and Jennifer Furlow of Williamsville; 10 great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Michael Spence and wife, Brenda of Benton, and Pat Spence and wife, Linda of West Frankfort; half sister, Henrietta Murphy and husband, Leonard of West Frankfort; nieces and nephews, other family members and many good friends. Services for Rhoda Mae Cline will be held at 7 p. m. today at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Tony Foeller officiating. Private burial will be Friday afternoon in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the funeral from 5 to 7 p. m. today at the funeral home.

CARBONDALE -- Steven Lee 'Steve' Howell, 50, died at 5:40 p. m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at home. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p. m. Friday at Meredith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Bank of Carbondale for an Educational Fund for Kain or Alcoholics Anonymous.

Helen Peak

GOLCONDA -- Helen E. Peak, 85, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Herrin. Services will be at 1 p. m. Friday at Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, with the Rev. Toby Williams officiating. Burial will be in I. O. O. F. Cemetery in Golconda. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Anita Dixon

HARRISBURG -- Anita Durant Dixon, 42, died at 10:45 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. Services will be at 1 p. m. Friday at Reed Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Darrell Ford officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home.

Roland U. Rogers

CAMBRIA -- Roland U. Rogers, 76, of Blairsville, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Friday, June 25, 2004, at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville. Burial will be in the Blairsville Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. Roland was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Chicago, to Floyd and Frieda (Scheonamann) Rogers. He married Dorothy Byrley on Feb. 21, 1946, in Chicago. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Cambria; son and daughter-in-law, Roland F. and Peggy Rogers of Carterville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Donald Kerley of Cambria; five grandchildren, Jane Acevedo of Chicago, Sherri Smith of Joliet, Roland John Rogers of Chicago, Michelle Krcmar of Cambria, and Michael Krcmar of Cambria; three great-grandchildren, Justin Smith and Jessica Smith both of Joliet, and Natasha Acevedo of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother. Roland retired after 39 years from Hayes Distributing in Chicago, a distributor for Miller Brewing Company, where he worked as a truck driver. After his retirement he served as crossing guard at the Hurst-Bush school and presently was the school bus coordinator at the Herrin elementary, where he made sure that the kids got on the right bus. He was a member of the teamster local in Chicago. He honorably served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. Roland enjoyed going fishing, drawing and woodworking.

MARION -- Eric William Olson, 39, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, and Rebecca Sue DeNeal Olson, 45, and died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at their home in Marion. A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p. m. Saturday at Blockhouse Cemetery, nine miles southeast of Harrisburg off of Illinois 34 near Rudement. Reed Funeral Chapel Inc., is in charge of arrangements.

HARRISBURG -- Bob Talkington, 67, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Burial will be in the Rhine Cemetery in Raleigh. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p. m. today in the funeral home.

Lucille Thornton

ENERGY -- Lucille Thornton, 88, of Energy, died at 11:35 p. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Parkway Manor in Marion. Lucille was born May 26, 1916, in Marion to Eldon P. and Lydia Candis (Norman) Odum. She married John Thornton on April 18, 1951, in Arkansas. He survives of Energy. Mrs. Thornton, along with her husband, formerly owned and operated Thornton's Market in Herrin prior to their retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Energy. Survivors include her husband, John Thornton of Energy; son and daughter-in-law, Johnie L. and Marty Thornton of Herrin; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bob Stricklin of Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Joyce Watson of Herrin; eight grandchildren; Russell and Jennifer Watson Jr. of Herrin, Steve and Kathy Watson of Herrin, Sheree Watson of Indiana, Debra and Steve Dingrando of Marion, John Allen and Denise Murry Jr. of Energy, Bryan and Amy Thornton of Columbus, Ohio, Chris Thornton of Herrin and Angela Thornton of Herrin; 10 great-grandchildren; niece, Leana Odum of Marion; and nephew, Raymond McCormick of Marion. Her parents; first husband; Russell Watson, infant daughter; Delores Mae, four sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. Services were Wednesday in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Rev. Don Colson officiating. Entombment was in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

BENTON -- Juanita A. (Holmes) Fuson Sloan, 86, of Benton, died at 12:10 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Severin Nursing Home in Benton. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Immanuel Baptist Church, Benton, with Pastor Roger Ellsworth officiating. Burial will be in the Big Ridge Cemetery in Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p. m. Saturday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Children's Home in Carmi and will be accepted at the church. Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Sloan was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Crawford, the daughter of Paul A. and Blenda (Newlin) Holmes. She was married to Robert C. Fuson Jr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1975, and later married Bluford Sloan, who preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton. She worked at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale library in the serial/cataloging department. She is survived by two sons, Robert and wife, Jody Fuson of Benton and William D. and wife, June Fuson of Carbondale; a daughter, Blenda Cleath of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren, Chad Fuson of Carbondale, Carrie Cox of Benton, Ben Fuson of Carbondale, Casey Fuson of Carbondale, Lars Cleath of Pittsburgh, and Nels Cleath, of Pittsburgh; and foster grandchild, Jack Knapper of Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren, Kiley, Korben and Korinn Cox. Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Russell Holmes, Lawrence Holmes, and sister, Ruby Fuson.

WEST FRANKFORT -- Ester Isabell Warren, 78, died at 12:05 p. m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Franklin Hospital in Benton. Services are incomplete at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.

Loy Curtis Hancock

MOUNT VERNON -- Loy Curtis Hancock, 86, formerly of Sesser, died at 2:35 p. m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Raleigh Cemetery in Raleigh, with the Rev. Mike Steed officiating. Those attending the graveside services are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Wednesday. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. Tuesday at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. He was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Saline County, the son of Lloyd Hancock and Minnie (Owen) Hancock. He married Mary Kaye (Barnett) Hancock on Sept. 9, 1944. She died on Jan. 26, 1984. He retired in 1980 as a teacher from Sesser High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II from 1941 until 1945. He was a gunnery instructor during his service. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Bloomington, the National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his son, Larry S. Hancock and wife Nancy of Mount Vernon; granddaughter, Valerie Kaye Hancock of Nashville, Tenn. ; sisters, Veala DeNeal of Harrisburg, and Opal Carbone of Bellflower, Calif. ; three nieces and a nephew also survive. His parents and two brothers, Herschel Hancock and Alvis Hancock preceded him in death. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Curtis and Mary Kaye Hancock Scholarship Fund for Future Teachers and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P. David R. Butler

MURPHYSBORO -- David R. Butler, 89, died at 3:35 p. m. in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born on Aug. 12, 1914, in Jackson County, the son of Francis Butler and Julia Boucher Butler. On Dec 24, 1941, he was married to Velma Crowell. Mr. Butler retired from the Missouri Pacific RR (Now the Union Pacific) as Supervisor of Heavy Equipment. He was a member of Lodge 498 AF & AM of Murphysboro and the United Methodist Church. He loved to fish and work in his garden and he was especially fond of entertaining his great-grandchildren. Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Butler of Murphysboro; two grandchildren, Kellie S. Ellis of Gorham and Willard F. Harris, IV of Ava; four brothers, Daniel Butler of Mascoutah, William of Red Bud, Walter of Mascoutah, and Urban Butler of Gorham; and one sister, Frances Hubbard of Niles, Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma, in 2001, and by a brother Boyd Butler in 1989. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday in the Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. today with a Masonic Funeral Service at 7 p. m. Memorials are suggested for the Masonic Children's Home in Murphysboro. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

NASHVILLE -- Maxine A. Leiling, 82, formerly of Ashley, passed away at 7:34 a. m. Sunday, June 20, at home. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday, June 26, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Nashville, with the Rev. Dan Jurek officiating. Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Albert Jenkins

MARION -- Albert Ralph Jenkins, 77, passed away at 6:45 p. m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Roy Baker officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the funeral home. Mr. Jenkins was born on March 30, 1927, in Wales, United Kingdom, to Albert Ralph and Doris Mae (Walters) Jenkins. Survivors include his wife, Lois Jenkins; daughters, Jacki Hardy, Vicki Rainaro and Jennifer Johnson; step-sons, Bruce, Richard Jr., David and Edward Hoffmann; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Jenkins studied for a short period to be a priest in the Church of England and left that when the war broke out. He served in the British Navy. He was educated in England. He studied electrical engineering at Alton Technical College, and also attended Battersea School of Refrigeration. He began his career as a sales engineer and project manager for a major research laboratory. In 1955 he moved to the United States and eventually became a U. S. citizen. He was an instructor in basic refrigeration at Coyne Technical College in Chicago and worked at Application Engineering Corporation in Wooddale. His love for the Lord led him to the ministry in 1984, where, with his wife, Lois, founded the New Hope Church in Skokie. He served as assistant chaplain at Cook County Hospital for two years and ministered at the Cook County Jail for several years. He worked with the Prison Fellowship at Dixon, Dwight, Lincoln, Logan, Shawnee and Vienna Correctional Centers. He moved his ministry to Goreville, where he started the New Hope Ranch. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Association of Christian Counselors from 1994 to 2003, National Chaplains Association from 1995 to 1999, and Marion Memorial Hospital Chaplains Corporation where he served as president for one year.

William Ray George

MARION -- William Ray George, 82, of Casselberry, Fla., passed away Monday, June 21, 2004, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Born in Marion, he moved to Casselberry, Fla., from Carbondale, in 1970. He was a real estate broker and a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Casselberry. He is survived by his son, William Mark George of Deland, Fla; daughter, Diane Thornton, of Winter Springs, Fla. ; two sisters, Mary Jo Riddle of Sherwood, Ark., and Emma Ruth Kissack of Rochelle; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Services will be at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the Community United Methodist Church, in Casselberry, Fla., with Pastor Nick Thompson officiating. Interment will be held Thursday in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community United Methodist Church Transportation Fund, 4921 S. US Hwy. 17-92, Casselberry, FL 32707.

MCLEANSBORO -- Carl Lee Burnett, 88, died at 4:52p. m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, June 23,2004, at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with the Revs. Robert Abbott and John Lee Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Smith Cemetery near Dale. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home.

SPARTA -- Albert E. Carlyle, 49, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Arkansas City, Kan. Services were held at 1 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at Blessing Heights Church of God-Apostolic Faith in Arkansas City, Kan., with the Rev. Floyd Saffell, Pastors Jack Adams and Tim Smith, and Bros. LaDell Elliott and Jess Fisher officiating. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City.
