Donald R. Bitner

MURPHYSBORO -- Donald R. Bitner, age 69, passed away at 3:30 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nate Hagen officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. today and Wednesday until the hour of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. or the First Lutheran Church. Donald was born on Oct. 26, 1934, in the Grange Hall area, north of Murphysboro, to Arthur Bitner and Gladys (Imhoff) Bitner. Mr. Bitner had retired from the maintenance department with the former Jackson County Nursing Home in Murphysboro. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Murphysboro. He was also a member of the following organizations: the Appaloosa Horse Club, the Moose Lodge in Murphysboro, and the Jackson County Farm Bureau. He married Judy Jines on March 21, 1964, in Murphysboro, and she survives. Other survivors include his mother of Murphysboro; five children, Michael Guetersloh and his wife, Kathy Guetersloh of Murphysboro, Patricia Thompson and her husband, Brian Thompson, Daniel Bitner and his wife, Nancy Bitner, and Mary Cross, all of Ava, and Rebecca Clover and her husband Bryan Clover of Murphysboro; eleven grandchildren, Jakob Guetersloh, Dacquiri Richey, B. J. Thompson, Breanna Thompson, Douglass Bitner, Nikki Bitner, Jimmy Cross, Heather Cross, Bryce Clover, Bridgett Clover, and Billy Clover; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul Bitner and Arlene Bitner, of Murphysboro; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann Richards and Homer Richards of Murphysboro. He was preceded in death by his father.

Phillip Turner

MARION -- Phillip C. Turner, 70, died at 11 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Walker Baptist Regional Hospital in Jasper, Ala. He was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Golden Pond, Ky. , to Claude and Audrey Turner. He was a retired correctional officer from the Marion Federal Penitentiary. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 177, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1567 of Zeigler, Marine Corps League, Zeigler Eagles, Illinois Sheriffs Association and the Illinois Police Association. He was a Catholic. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Russell Moore of Marion; three step-daughters, Tina and husband Thomas Dean of Benton, Patti Wyant of Zeigler, and Cathy Mason of Valier; nine grandchildren, Racheal Bernadoni of Marion, Sara Jo Moore of Marion, Brandy Williams of Herrin, Troy Russell of Pittsburg, Raven Dean of Benton, Ashley and Laura Barron, both of Benton, Aaron Wyant of Benton, and David Clark of Valier; two brothers, Bill Turner of Jasper, Ala. , and Hale Turner of Taylor, Mich.; and one sister, Mary Good of Lincoln Park, Mich. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Troy Russell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. tonday in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with military rites conducted at 7 p. m. by VFW Post 1301 of Marion. Burial will follow at a later date in Kentucky.

Luise Tinder

CARTERVILLE -- Luise Tinder, 86, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 1 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 26, in Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Dorothy Cook officiating. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Phillip Turner

Tuesday conducted by VFW Post No. 1301 of Marion. Burial will follow at a later date in Kentucky.

Marion Lee 'Bud' Lewis

CARTERVILLE -- Marion Lee 'Bud' Lewis, 79, of Carterville, formerly of Carbondale, passed away at 8:05 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Home, Herrin. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. Danny Boyd officiating. Interment will be held in Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. today, Aug. 23, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Shawnee Christian Nursing Home, 1901 N. 135th Street, Herrin, IL 62948 and will be accepted by the funeral home. Marion was born May 26, 1925, in Cobden to John and Mamie (Robinson) Lewis. He married Iva Lorene Hill on Nov. 19, 1947, in Carbondale. She preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 1990. He is also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and six sisters. Survivors include, one son, Kenny Lewis of Lake of Egypt; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jesse Crow of DeSoto, and Darlene and James Delvin Holder of Chester; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Marion was a member of New Life Covenant Church, Carbondale. He retired from Carbondale Elementary School District as Supervisor of Maintenance in 1978. He was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables. His hobbies included woodworking and playing the guitar.

Rose Steinmetz

Johnson CITY -- Rose Steinmetz, 58, died at 7:17 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Sr. Catherine Wellinghoff and the Rev. Robert Jilek officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today, Aug. 23, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, envelopes available at the funeral Home. Rose was born on July 20, 1946, in Herrin, the daughter of Fred and Bonnie (Porter) Yelencich. She married Don Steinmetz in May of 1969 in Johnston City, he survives. Rose had worked at Anderson News for the last 18 years. She was a graduate of Johnston City High School Class of 1964 and was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Johnston City. She is survived by one daughter, Lisa Moore and husband, Kevin of Carterville; and one son, Shane Steinmetz and wife, Liberty of Johnston City; a grandson, Coltan Steinmetz; one brother Greg Yelencich and wife Ingela of Johnston City; one step-son, Randall Steinmetz Sr. of Herrin; two step-grandchildren, Randy Steinmetz Jr. of Harrisburg, and Christina Fox of Harrisburg; two step-great granddaughters, Alex Steinmetz of Marion and Hailey Steinmetz of Harrisburg. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen Grozik Cavarretta

MURPHYSBORO-- Helen Grozik Cavarretta, 85, passed away at 7:10 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Murphysboro. Her funeral mass will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at St. Andrew Church in Murphysboro. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Royalton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p. m. Tuesday and Wednesday until 9:45 a. m. at Pettett Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. Helen was born on Jan. 22, 1919, in Buckner, to Michael Grozik and Eva (Sardiga) Grozik. She married Vester Cavarretta and he preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2002. Mrs. Cavarretta was a housewife and she had worked with her husband in retail business including a jewelry store. Mrs. Cavarretta was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro and a quilter at the church, a member of the Murphysboro Senior Citizens, and a member of the Kitchen Band. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Tammy Cavarretta of Carbondale; two grandchildren, Zachary Cavarretta and Nicholas Cavarretta, both of Carbondale; one brother, Alex Grozik of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and her parents.

Violet Trigg

PINCKNEYVILLE -- Violet A. Trigg, 89, died 7:13 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in the St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, with the Rev. Jim Endsley officiating. Burial will be in Mueller Hill Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p. m. Tuesday and from 8 to 9:30 a. m. Wednesday at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home, then at the church from 10 a. m. to 11 a. m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville or the American Cancer Society.

David McDaniel

McLEANSBORO -- David McDaniel, 68, died 3:15 p. m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center in McLeansboro. Services were held at 11 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, the Rev. Jay Vineyard officiated. Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery near McLeansboro. Harre Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Peterson

NEW HAVEN -- Mildred Sue Peterson, 60, died 1:56 a. m. Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, Ind. At her request she was cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Elorado is in charge of arrangements.

Jacqueline Garrett

ELDORADO -- Jacqueline 'Jackie' Garrett, 63, died 4 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2004, at home. Services will be at 12 p. m. today at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Visitation will be today from 10:30 a. m. to noon at the funeral home, with the Rev. Howard Scott officiating. Cremation will then follow.

Willie Webster

CAIRO -- Willie J. Webster, 84, died 12:53 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in South East Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Arrangements are incomplete at Massie Funeral Home in Cairo.

Margo Aldridge

MURPHYSBORO -- Margo C. Aldridge, 67, died at 3:55 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson county in Murphysboro. Services will be 1 p. m. Thursday, at the Crain Funeral Home between Carbondale and Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc. , Southern Illinois Chapter.

Harry Etheridge

GOREVILLE -- Harry Kenny Ethridge, 58, formerly of Goreville, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at home in Houston Texas. A private memorial service for the family will be at a later date.

Mary Neely

GOLCONDA -- Mary Neely, 69, died at 6:15 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at home in New Liberty Community. Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday, at the Aly Funeral Home in Golconda, with the Rev. Tony Wayne Harris officiating. Burial will be in Metropolis Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 6 p. m. , today at the funeral home.

Mildred Vicenzi

ANNA -- Mildred Vicenzi, 91, died at 4:30 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Union County Nursing Home in Anna surrounded by her family. She was born on Sept. 20, 1912, at Norway, Mich. , the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Beitel) Paul. She was married on Aug. 7, 1939, to John Vicenzi. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1997. Mrs. Vicenzi was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna and was an elementary school teacher for 30 years, retiring from Lincoln School in Anna. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Evelyn Vicenzi of Anna; her grandchildren and their spouses, Rick and Stephanie Vicenzi of Anna, Jonathan and Tammy Vicenzi of Jonesboro, and Tricia and Brad Brush of Anna; and five great-grandchildren, Ryan and Samantha Vicenzi, Katelynn and Jacob Brush, and Nathan Vicenzi. Services for Mildred Vicenzi will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 31 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today and on Tuesday until 10:45 a. m. at Crain Funeral Home in Anna. Prayer service will be at 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Crain Funeral Home of Anna is in charge of arrangements.

Reba Reese

MARION -- Reba Reese, 99 years, five months and 25 days, died at 3:53 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Fountains Nursing Home in Marion. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Revs. Michael Ebert and Carl Phelps officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Reba was born on March 4, 1905, in Williamson County, to Albert Wiley and Florence (Borum) Herring. She married Ernest Gottlieb Reese on Dec. 23, 1919, in Paducah. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1969. Mrs. Reese was a homemaker, having formerly worked for Sangamo Electric and Selmier-Peerless Cleaners. She was a member of the First Church of God and a former member of the Marion Senior Citizens where she performed in the Kitchen Band. Reba was also a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Ruby Reese of Marion, and Lloyd and Joy Reese of Marion; a daughter, Sue (Reese) Goodwin of Carbondale; seven grandchildren, Paula Rentfro of Marion, Beverly L. West of Marion, Jennifer Rich of Marion, Carol Fisher of Carterville, Doris Diane Ward of Thompsonville, Donna Lee Hill of Marion, and Lisa Kay Cobb of Marion; 14 great-grandchildren; and 12 great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two children, Pauline Jeanette and Bobby Gene Reese; two brothers, William and Artie Herring, and one sister, Pearl Garland.

HOYLETON -- Eldor Miessner, 85, died at 1:20 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Nashville. Services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Styninger Funeral Chapel in Hoyleton. Burial with military honors will follow in Zion Evangelical Cemetery in Hoyleton. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a. m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Julia Ann Fox

CARBONDALE -- Julia Ann Fox, 90, passed away at 5:50 p. m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale with the Revs. Wes Henson and Bill Carter officiating. Interment will be held at Dillinger Cemetery in Carbondale. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Dillinger Cemetery and will be accepted by the funeral home. Julia was born on July 24, 1914, in Jackson County, to John William and Rhoda E. (Bridges) McKinney. She married Paul E. Fox on Jan. 26, 1930, in Marion. He preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Bobby Fox; six sisters; and one brother. Survivors include one son, Paul Gene Fox of Casa Grande, Ariz.; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Julia was a charter member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, Carbondale; Rebekah 220 of Carbondale; Home Extension Buckles Unit of Carbondale; Jackson County Sewing Club, Busy Hands Carbondale; AARP both local and national; Senior Citizens, Women's Missionary Union; and the Birthday Club.

Leila Mae Boldrey

CHESTER -- Leila Mae Boldrey, 78, of Cape Griardeau, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the Lutheran Home at Cape Girardeau. She was born Sept. 1, 1925, at Cora City, the daughter of Benjamin and Anna (Boodocker) Boldrey. She and Bernard Boldrey were married on Nov. 22, 1945, in Chester. He died Jan. 3, 1995. Boldrey was a secretary in the math department at Southeast Missouri State University for 23 years. She was a volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital, the police station and the Lutheran Home. She was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and a member of PEO chapter BI. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Kathy Boldrey of Sikeston, Mo. , and two grandsons, Dr. Andrew and Aaron Boldrey of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p. m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Services will be at 7 p. m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating, and a graveside service at 10 a. m. Tuesday in the Fairmont Cemetery in Cape Girardeau. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes. Association, 2650 S. Hanley Road, Suite 350, St. Louis, MO 63144.

JOHNSTON CITY -- Mildred Pelts, 99, of Baker City Ore., formerly of Johnston City, died at 3:15 a. m. in Baker City, Ore. Arrangements are incomplete are Merman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City.

HERRIN -- Paul Wasik died at 4 p. m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Arrangements are incomplete at Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin.

Buell Huggins

HERRIN -- Buell C. Huggins, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. Arrangements are incomplete at Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin.

William Ewell

ELDORADO -- William Henry Ewell, 82, a native of Eldorado, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Louisville, Ky. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado. A private burial will follow visitation in Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado.

John Chadderton

STEELVILLE -- John R. Chadderton, 56, died at 2:30 a. m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a. m. Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steelville, with Dr. Alan W. Janneke officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery in Steelville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. Tuesday and 7:30 to 11 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Cecil Ray Whitney

JONESBORO -- Cecil Ray Whitney, 59, passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at home. He was born Nov. 4, 1944, in Charleston, Mo. , son of Allen and Myrtle (Kidd) Whitney. He married Patricia Kay Hileman on June 23, 1967, in Mill Creek. He worked as a operator on construction. He was a veteran, serving in the US Navy. He is survived by his wife, Kay; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Matt Dare of Jonesboro; two sons, Charles Whitney of Jonesboro; Thomas J. and wife, Julie Whitney of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; five sisters, Patricia Smith and Sue Atwell both of Cobden, Rose Evans of Anna, Ruth Wells and Cindy Ott of South Carolina; three brothers, Mike Whitney of Dongola, Mark Whitney of Elco and William Whitney of North Carolina; serveral aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be no services or visitation at the funeral home. Friends and family are invited to call at the Whitney family home Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, beginning at 5 p. m. for a time of remembrance of Cecil Ray Whitney. Hileman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
