Edward Beck

Edward J. Beck, 76, of Norris City, died Friday morning, December 8, 2000 at White County Skilled Care in Carmi. He was born May 1, 1924 in White County the son of Jacob and Mary (Goetz) Beck. He married Mary E. Knight on August 21, 1955 at the Union Ridge Church and she survives.

Mr. Beck was a semi-retired farmer, having farmed most of his life in southern White County. He graduated from Rudolph Grade School and Carmi High School. He then graduated from Lockyear’s Business College in Evansville with a degree in accounting. He was chairman of the White County Soil and Water Conservation District. In 1999 he was named of the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation District’s “Outstanding District Director”. He won a Goodyear Conservation Award in 1975. He was a past executive chairman of the White County Agricultural Extension Council, the treasurer of Union Ridge Cemetery Association, past president of the Wabash Valley Angus Association, and past president of the NCOE school board.

He enlisted September of 1944 in the United States Navy. He served in the South Pacific during WWII on an LSM. He was a member of the Carmi V.F.W. Post #3851. He attended Union Ridge Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Mary; one son, Terry E. Beck of Evansville, In., two brothers and sisters-in-law, Homer and Pauline Beck of Carmi, and Kenneth and Jean Beck of Normal; several nieces and nephews and three sisters-in-law, Lucille Beck of Lawrenceville, Evelyn Beck of Carmi, and Florence Beck of Mattoon. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers, Wilburn, Oscar, Victor, Norman, Ernest, Alvin, and Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday December 10, 2000 at Union Ridge Presbyterian Church near New Haven with Burial in the church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m on Saturday December 9, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Clara Mae “Cherry” Burris

Clara Mae “Cherry” Burris 75 of Carmi died Friday evening December 8, 2000 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, In. She was born August 22, 1925 in Ridgeway the daughter of Roy and Florence (Suttner) Adams. She married Morris Burris December 15, 1945 in Jonesboro, Arkansas and he survives.

Mrs. Burris was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her husband Morris; one son and daughter-in-law Steven and Cecelia Burris of Gainesville, Florida; two daughers and son-in-law, Jenny McCubbin of Liberty, Missouri, and Becky and Ed Sherfield of Carmi; four grandchildren, Brandon and Rachel Sherfield and Zachary and Ian McCubbin; one step-grandson, Adam Wilkerson; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Burris of Metropolis. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son James Burris.

Private family funeral services will be held on Tuesday December 12, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in White County Memorial Garden. The family will meet friends at visitation on Monday December 11, 2000 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clara D. Barbre

Clara D. Barbre, 83 of Carmi, died Saturday morning December 9, 2000 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, In. She was born July 20, 1917 in Hawthorne Township, the daughter of Ross and Stella (Quinn) Erwin. She married Wesley Arnold Barbre on December 17, 1932 at South Venice, and he preceded her in death on February 6, 1984.

Mrs. Barbre was a homemaker and member of Stewart Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Rist of Bloomington, and Debra Lynn Narusis of Salt Lake City, Utah; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, Dallas, Vernal, John, and Roy Erwin, and four sisters, Irene Erwin, Matilda Browning, Jessie Weedman, and Mary Ruth Kelly.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday December 12, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth A. Bostic

Ruth A. Bostic, 63 of Lawrenceville and formerly of Maunie, died Saturday evening December 16, 2000 at her home. She was born July 29, 1937 in Maunie the daughter of Harold and Mabel Burris DeLong. She married John Andy Bostic on July 30, 1955 in Carmi and he survives.

Mrs. Bostic had been a supervisor at Central Industries in Lawrenceville where she had worked for over 30 years.

She is survived by her husband Andy, one daughter, Pamela Bostic of Indianapolis, In.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Betty DeLong of Carmi and John and Doris DeLong of Maunie; also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Eugene, and Glenn DeLong.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday December 20, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Marshall Ferry Cemetery at Rising Sun. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. on Wednesday until time of service at the funeral home.

Anthony “Bam” Holland

Anthony “Bam” Holland, 36 of Carmi died Tuesday afternoon December 19, 2000 at White County Skilled Care. He was born April 13, 1964 in Welch, Louisiana the son of Ray and Jennie (Burnett) Holland.

Mr. Holland had worked as a truck driver.

He is survived by his parents, Ray and Jennie Holland of Maunie; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Lisa Holland of Carmi, Keith and Dawn Holland of Concord, Jeff and Teresa Holland of Bismark, and Terry Holland of Georgia; also survived by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday December 22, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Marshall Ferry Cemetery at Rising Sun. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Larry Dale Jackson

Larry Dale Jackson, 53 of Pana died Wednesday December 20, 2000 at his residence. He was born September 22, 1947 in Carmi the son of General Houston and Maude Mae (Reagan) Jackson. He married Ruth Asbury on October 8, 1971 in Shaweneetown and she survives.

Mr. Jackson moved to Pana 16 years ago from the Norris City and Carmi area. He worked for C&R Amusement. He was a member of the Lighthouse Penecostal Church in Pana.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife Ruth; one son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Cindy Kauffman of Norris City; four daughters and sons-in-law, Darla Baker of Brazil, IN, Tammy and Rick Dixon of Athens, Debra and Timothy Schmitz of Riverton, and Angela and Joshua Koons of Pana; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Gene “Bud” Jackson of Mt. Carmel, Charles Jackson of Crossville, and Kenneth Jackson of Pana; one sister Ruth Blazier of Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday December 23, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Maple Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until time of services at the funeral home.

Robert D. “Don” Healy

Robert D. “Don” Healy, 77, of Norris City, died Thursday, December 21, 2000 at the Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado. He was born June 3, 1923 in Norris City, the son of Elvis M. and Nellie (Riley) Healy. He married Margaret “Louise” Craig on November 15, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, MO and she survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Healy is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Healy of Norris City and one daughter, Gloria Jean Leisure of Moro, AR, five grandchildren, Dean Stokes and Kim Corbett, both of Norris City, Scott Stokes of Huntingburg, IN, Stacy Broughton of Wichita, KS, and Stephen Healy of Valley Center, KS; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Healy of Pool, KY, and one sister, Rose Marie Brown of Norris City. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Vivian and Nancy Sue Healy and two brothers, Walter and Jack Healy.

Following cremation, private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Norris City.

Chris Edward Westergard

Chris Edward Westergard, 53 of Longview, Texas and formerly of the Maunie area, died December 24, 2000 in Longview. He was born August 3, 1947 in Pryor, Oklahoma the son of Edward and Edna (Cooper) Westergard. He married Jo Beth Gaddey and she survives.

Mr. Westergard worked for Smith International Inc. of Houston, Texas.

He is survived by his wife Jo Beth, one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Frank Karnegis of Memphis, TN; one son Chris Nathan Westergard of Charleston; one grandson, Alex; one sister, Linda Smith of Yukon, Oklahoma; two stepsons, Robert Gaddey of Panama City Beach, FL, and Michael Gaddey of Owensboro, KY; two step-grandchildren, Nicholas and Tyler Gaddey.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday December 30, 2000 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. The family will meet friends one prior to services at the funeral home.

Mamie Buck

Mamie Buck, 88 of Springerton, died early Wednesday morning December 27, 2000 at the Enfield Healthcare Center in Enfield. She was born August 18, 1912 in Hamilton County the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Critchfield) McGehee. She married Wilson Buck July 17, 1932 and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1967.

Mrs. Buck had been the manager of the Senior Citizens Program in Springerton, the Carmi Times correspondent for Springerton news for over 20 years, a cook at Enfield Healthcare for many years and a lifelong member of the Springerton Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Henry Woodrow of Springerton, five grandchildren and spouses, Chuck and Becky Venable of Springerton, Cathy and Ronnie Wiethop of Newburgh, IN, Chrystal Armstrong and Keith York of Carmi, Jim Woodrow of Springerton, and Alan and Crissy Woodrow of Barnhill; ten great-grandchildren and spouses, Andy and Jennifer Venable of Centralia, Tim Venable of Springerton, Carl Venable with the US Army in Hawaii, Pam Venable of Springerton, E.J. Venable of Springerton, Jeremy and Megan Woodrow of Springerton, Jarrod Armstrong of Carmi, Josh Woodrow of Springerton, Ashley Woodrow of Springerton, and Sydney Woodrow of Barnhill; three great-great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle and Brody Venable of Centralia. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Leora McGehee, husband, and one brother, Dewey McGehee.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday December 30, 2000 at the Springerton Christian Church with Burial in Hammack Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday December 29, 2000 at Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Wilma A. Hyten

Wilma A. Hyten, 90 of Carmi died at the Cornerstone White County Medical Center Tuesday morning January 2, 2001. She was born August 28, 1910 in White County the daughter of Otis and Maude (Gaines) Majors. She was married to Joe Hyten and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hyten was a homemaker and member of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Joan Frazier of Carmi; five grandchildren and spouses, Debbie Tate of Mt. Vernon, IL, Charles Frazier of Carmi, Jill and Randy Stover of Phoenix, AZ, David Hyten, Jr. of Knoxville, and Kim and Barry Vaughan of McLeansboro; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Newman Hardy and Lucille Rodgers both of Carmi; a daughter in law, Barbara Hyten survives in Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by one son, David Hyten, and one brother, Clyde Majors.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday January 4, 2001 in the chapel at White County Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Thursday at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Alberta L. Mears

Alberta L.Mears, 88 of Carmi died Thursday evening January 18, 2001 at White County Skilled Care. She was born August 1, 1912 in New Haven the daughter of Albert and Ona (McGhee) Trafford. She married Herschel Mears on June 11, 1932 in New Haven and he preceded her in death on January 15, 1976.

Mrs Mears had been a waitress and cook at local restaurants for many years. She attended the First United Methodist Church of Carmi.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ella and Richard Williams of Carmi; two sons, Gilbert Mears of Lake City, FL, and Sherrill Mears of Carmi; four grandchildren, Kim Mears, Gary Mears, Beverly Osborne, and David Williams, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Harry Glenn Trafford.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday January 21, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Nicholas Showalter officiating. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. on Sunday until time of services. Memorials may be made to White County Home Health Care.

Mary Sue Lynn

Mary Sue Lynn, 74, of Enfield, died Friday afternoon, January 19, 2001 at the White County Skilled Care in Carmi.

She was born July 7, 1926 in Tulu, KY, the daughter of Daniel Linford and Nellie (Johnston) Lynn.

She is survived by two sons, Paul Richard Hargrove of Enfield and Roger Dale Hargrove of Kentucky, four daughters, Elizabeth Jane Pullium of Hartford, Doris Jean Miller of Woodriver, Katherine A. Turner of Carmi and Connie Sue Hargrove of Norris City, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and three brothers, Richard Lynn of Evansville, Daniel Lynn and James Lynn both of Marion, KY. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy and two sisters, Viva Butler and Mae Murray.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 22, 2001 at the Harkin Cemetery in Tulu, KY. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2001 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Cleda Black

Cleda Black, 91 of Enfield died Monday January 22, 2001 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. She was born March 3, 1909 near Springerton, the daughter of Willis and Anna (York) Savage. She married John Black on January 13, 1926 and he preceded her in death on May 11, 1997.

Mrs. Black graduated from Enfield High School. She was a member of the Supreme Shrine of the Order of the White Shrine Jerusalem, the Supreme Council Order of Amaranthe unincorporated, a 50 year member of the Enfield Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Enfield Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Black is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Marion Pleasant Savage, Durward Vernon Savage and Bertis Theron Savage.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday January 25, 2001 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Walter Virgil Wright

Walter Virgil Wright, 92 of Carmi died Friday January 26, 2001 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. He was born December 7, 1908 in Mill Shoals Township the son of Newton and Effie (South) Wright.
He first married Evelyn White in March of 1929 and she preceded him in death in 1961, he then married Wilma (Walker) Gates in June of 1962 and she survives.

Mr. Wright was a lifelong farmer of the Marble Top area. He also worked many years as a carpenter. He is a member of the White County Farm Bureau. Through the years he and his family housed many Bible College students. He was a past member of Seven Mile Christian Church and a long time member of the First Christian Church in Carmi where he served as a deacon and was a deacon emeritus and a member of the Union Worker Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife Wilma; one son, Walter Francis Wright of Evansville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris Jean and Ralph Anselment of Carmi, and Lois and Pat Shelden of Lantana, FL, two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Mary Gates of Pontiac and John and Kay Gates of Siddell, LA; one step daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Roger Buchholz of Rantoul; fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel James of Carmi and Ruby Carter of East Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Evelyn, one sister Vivian McDaniel, and one brother in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday January 29, 2001 at the First Christian Church in Carmi with Robby King officiating. Burial will be in White County Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to a permanent scholarship fund established at Johnson Bible College in Mr. Wrights name.

Henry Campbell

Henry Campbell, 87 of Carmi died Saturday evening January 27, 2001 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. He was born February 23, 1913 in White County the son of George and Sue (Marlin) Campbell. He married Bertha R. Gillihan and she preceded him in death on February 28, 1997.

Mr. Campbell retired from the Phillips Petroleum Company. He also worked for many years as a carpenter.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Campbell Golladay of Hopkinsville, KY; two step sons, Fred Brewer of Mt. Carmel, and Max Brewer of Marsailles; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Clellan and James Campbell, and one sister, Mary Burner.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday January 30, 2001 at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi.

Beatrice Rudolph Payne

Beatrice Nadine Rudolph Payne 92, of Brandon, Florida and formerly of Carmi died Monday February 5, 2001 in Brandon. She was born November 2, 1908 in Crossville, the daughter of George and Marcella (Bradshaw) Greene. She first married Clarence Rudolph and he preceded her in death. She then married Wendell Payne and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Payne spent most of her life in Dixon, IL.

She is survived locally by a nephew, Robert Finch of Carmi, and a cousin, Violet Fleming of Carmi.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Kuykendall Cemetery. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
