Lizzie Gwaltney

Lizzie Gwaltney, age 92 of Carmi, died early Sunday morning November 14, 2004 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born March 29,1912 in Eureka, the daughter of Dirk and Anna (Everding) Dirkf. She married Wilburn Gwaltney and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gwaltney had worked in housekeeping at Carmi Township Hospital. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a step-son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Doris Gwaltney of Carmi; two grandchildren and their spouses, Mark & Kim Gwaltney and Mike & Cam Gwaltney. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday November 16 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 12:30 until time of service on Tuesday. Burial will be in Little Zion Cemetery.

Beverly Ruth Allen

Beverly Ruth Allen, 81 of Balch Springs, TX and formerly of Carmi, died Sunday February 20, 2005 at Mesquite Community Hospital in Mesquite, TX. She was born September 19, 1923 in Troy Grove, IL, the daughter of Forrest and Florence (Adams) Bankes. She was married to Frank Yohn. She then married Osborne David “Doc” Allen on May 24, 1955 in Mt. Vernon, IL and he preceded her in death on September 29, l983.

Mrs. Allen was a nurse and had worked many years at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and Women of the Moose. She was a member of St. Polycarp Catholic Church. She loved to work in her flower gardens and do crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed participating with her daughter, Connie in her Beta Sigma Phi activities. Wild Bill Hickok was also born in Troy Grove and Bev’s grandparents lived across from the Hickok homestead. When her grandfather Adams was a young lad he used to throw coins in the air for Wild Bill to shoot when he came to town to visit his family.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Connie) Novak of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania and Becky Holland of Dallas, TX; one step-son and daughter-in-law, Marvin & Karen Allen of Carmi; one step-daughter, Davita Head of Thompson Station, TN; sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one step-son, Paul David Allen and one brother, William Bankes.

Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2005 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church in Carmi. Visitation will be from 11:30 until the time of the service. Burial will be in Oddfellow Cemetery in McLeansboro. Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

EXIE B. ARBAUGH

Exie B. Arbaugh, 93, formerly of Carmi, passed away Thursday morning, February l7, at the Emerald House at Washington, Indiana. She was born July 23, 1911 in Beech Grove, KY the daughter of Harvey and Helen (Osborne) Dodson. She married Chelsea Cyril “Chub” Arbaugh in Carmi on February 1933 and he preceded her in death on January 22, 1976.

Mrs. Arbaugh was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Carmi.

She is survived by one daughter, Laura Ann Hixson of Washington, IN; six grandchildren, Pam Parks, John Arbaugh, Kandis Motheral, Cindy Cain, Mike Arbaugh and Bob Hixson; nine great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert “Bob” Lynn Arbaugh.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday February 21, 2005 at the First Christian Church in Carmi with Robby King officiating. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery near Carmi. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Minda Atteberry

Minda Atteberry, age 105 of Carmi died Friday evening February 11, 2005 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born May 27, 1899 near Springerton, the daughter of George and Emma (Martin) Duckworth. She had been married to Oscar Taylor and Jesse Atteberry and they both preceded her in death.

Mrs. Atteberry had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Carmi and a member of Gospel Assembly Church in Mill Shoals.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Madge and Glen Hutchcraft of Carmi; two sisters, Mabel Randolph of Carmi and Nadine Hillyard of Rolla, MO; two grandchildren and spouse, Judy Stocke Fleck of Carmi and Bart and Millie Brooks of Norris City; four great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren, Jim, Mike and Merle Taylor. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Duckworth and five sisters, Anna Bond, Armilda Hodge, Emily Bradshaw, Josephine Rutherford and Evelyn Hillyard.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday February 15, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Burnt Prairie. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday February 14, 2005 at the funeral home.

Robert C. Barlow

Robert C. Barlow, 89 of Enfield, died Monday evening, May 23, 2005 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born October 2, 1915 in Gallitan County, the son of Jerry M. and Nannie (Eddings) Barlow. He married Marjorie L. Pyle on May 31, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO and she survives.

He was a lifetime farmer and had been a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. Posts and a 50 year member of the Masons. He was a member of the Enfield Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; one son and daughter-in-law, Carroll & Margaret Barlow of New Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna L. & Jim Lane of Enfield; five grandchildren, Cindy Lowery, Kendall Lane, Mark Barlow, Michelle Barlow and Lisa South; five great-grandchildren, Amy, Ashley, Scott, Daniel and Cody; and one sister-in-law, Ermma Barlow of Wayne City. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe L. Barlow, Howard M. Barlow, Jerry M. Barlow and Hal M. Barlow; and one sister, Nancy Parr.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at the Enfield Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the church with Masonic rites being held at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery with graveside military rites being held by the combined veteran units of the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Blakemore

Elizabeth Blakemore, age 92 of Enfield, died Saturday evening March 5, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born January 23, 1913 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Maurice and Wave (Crawford) Deahl. She married Earl Blakemore and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Blakemore had worked at Ainsbrooke in Carmi for many years. She was the site manager at the Enfield Senior Citizens until her retirement in 1999. She was a member of the Enfield Christian Church.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jim Ryan of Benton, KY; three grandchildren, Lora Murphy and Scott Taylor of Murray, KY and Stacy Hendon of Paducah, KY; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Russell of Norris City and Nell Wichael Waterloo, Iowa. She was preceded in death by one brother, Crawford Deahl and two sisters, Patsy Frymire and Ruth Walls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday March 8, 2005 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday a the Funeral Home.

Dorothy K. Browning

Dorothy Kathleen Browning, 78, of Carmi died Friday afternoon, December 3, 2004 at the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born June 5, 1926 in Boston, MA, the daughter of John J. and Anna (Gillis) Melavin. She first married Lloyd Blackledge and later married Charles H. Browning and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Browning was a clerk for the Edison Co. and later retired from Western Bell. She had also worked for WADI. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She belonged to St. Polycarp Catholic Church and Ten Mile Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Andrea & David Hays of Norris City; one son, William H. Blackledge of McLeansboro; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Charles E. & Debbie Browning of Belleville, and Jasper Leroy & Melissa Browning of McLeansboro; one grandchild, Erin L. Hays, five step-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, John & Joyce Melavin of Scituate, MA; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Doris & John Passi of Fullerton, CA, Rosemary Corcoran of Berwyn, PA and Kay Murphy of Weymouth, MA.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday December 6, 2004 at Ten Mile Baptist Cemetery near McLeansboro. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Morris Burris

Morris Burris, age 86 of Carmi, died early Friday morning August 19, 2005 at the White County Medical Center in Carmi. He was born February 28, 1919 in Carmi, the son of Charles and Eura Lena (Wilson) Burris. He married Clara Mae “Cherry” Adams on December 15, 1945 in Jonesboro, AR and she preceded him in death on December 8, 2000.

Mr. Burris worked for General Telephone Company for 40 years before his retirement. He served as a Sergeant in the 95th Division Signal Co. in the U.S. Army during WWII. He also served with the Carmi Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the Carmi American Legion and VFW Posts. He was a Ham Radio Operator. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play baseball and softball.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Cecelia Burris of Gainesville, FL; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny McCubbin and Larry Huonker of Liberty, MO and Becky and Ed Sherfield of Carmi; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Burris of Carbondale; four grandchildren, Brandon and Rachel Sherfield, Zachary and Ian McCubbin, one step-grandson, Adam Wilkinson, and one sister Margaret Dagley of Carmi. He was preceded in death by his wife, and one son, James; three brothers Albert, Delbert and Dallas; and two sisters, Imogene Acker and Ermal Dial.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 22, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the White County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. military services will be accorded by the combined units of the Carmi American Legion and VFW Posts.

Tammy Crawford

Tammy Crawford, 47 of Crossville, died Tuesday morning March 22, 2005 at her home after a 5 year battle with cancer. She was born November 7, 1957 in Carmi, the daughter of Karen Crawford James.

Miss Crawford had worked as an aid at the Southeastern Residential Alternatives Home. She was pursuing a career in nursing. She was proud to be a Red Cross Volunteer. She was a member and recently baptized at the World Harvest Christian Center.

She is survived by one son, Levi Crawford of Carmi; one brother, Clinton James of Carmi; one sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Billy Hodges of Wyoming; several aunts and uncles who all played a major part in her life, Jerry & Jeanie Crawford of Carmi, Rod & Jennie Crawford of North Carolina, Ed & Shirley Crawford of Carmi, Sherry & Bob Phillips of Carmi, Joan Chapman of Chicago, Mary Lou Crawford and Lana Crawford of Carmi; two nephews, Jonathon & Jesse Hodges of Wyoming; her step-father who raised her, Everett James of Carmi; and her best friend of 41 years, Cindy Westfall of Crossville and special friend, Tammy Reese of Crossville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Karen Crawford James and one son, Lucas “Luke” Crawford; and her grandparents, Gus & Mildred Crawford.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 25, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be made in the name of Miss Crawford to the Southern Illinois Hospice and VNA or to Deaconess Hospital.

James W. Daugherty

James W. Daugherty, age 84 of Carmi, died Monday evening May 16, 2005 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born September 4, 1920 in Livermore, KY, the son of Owen and Viola (Scott) Daugherty. He married Margaret Chatman on December 2, 1939 in Calhoun, KY and she survives.

Mr. Daugherty was President of Weal Drilling Co. of Carmi and Madisonville, KY and he worked in the oil field for 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmie & Donna Daugherty of Madisonville, KY and William “Billy” Daugherty of New Iberia, LA; one daughter and son-in-law, Roxana & Terry Juenger of Carmi; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, J.C. & Emma Daugherty of Paducah, KY; and two sisters, Lorene Carmen and Christen Nicley both of Owensboro, KY.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Carmi. military rites will be accorded by the combined units of the Carmi American Legion and V.F.W. Posts.

Greg Dozier

Greg Dozier, 44 of Fairfield, died Friday evening, June 25, 2005 at the home of his parents in Burnt Prairie. He was born December 13, 1960 at the U.S. Naval Station in Argentia, Newfoundland, the son of Carroll D. and Reva (Barger) Dozier. He married Kim Henshaw on November 19, 1988 in Grayville and she survives.

Mr. Dozier was a belt mechanic at the White County Coal Patikii Mine. He is a member of the Southern Cherokee Nation. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years.

He is survived by his wife, Kim; his parents, Carroll and Reva Dozier of Burnt Prairie; one son, Neil Dozier and two daughters, Nicole Ja-Lee and Haley Shay Dozier, all at home; one brother, Dean Dozier of Enfield; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2005 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Fairfield. military graveside rites will be conducted by the combined veteran units of the Carmi V.F.W. Post #3851 and America Legion Post # 224.

Virginia L. Frashier

Virginia L. Frashier, age 79 of Carmi, died early Sunday morning March 13, 2005 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born September 12, 1925 in Norris City, the daughter of Leo and Nora (Buttry) Raney. She married Clifford Frashier on February 9, 1945 in Carmi and he survives.

Mrs. Frashier was a homemaker. She was a member of the Methodist Faith.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Harold “Duke” Cunningham of Walkersville, West Virginia; one grandchild, Phillip Todd Cunningham; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Austin Cunningham; two brothers, Jesse “Jake” Raney of Eddyville, KY and Gerald “Pete” Raney of Morganfield, KY; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally and Orville Lay of Alton and Mae and Donald Hall of Carmi. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis “Buck” Raney and one grandson, Travis Wade Cunningham.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 6-8 on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery in Carmi.

JOAN FRAZIER

Joan Frazier, 73, of Carmi passed away at the White County Medical Center Emergency Room on Wednesday afternoon, August 17, 2005.

She was born on December 29, 1931, in White County the daughter of Joe and Wilma (Majors) Hyten and was employed by the Health Care Community Care in Fairfield, IL.

Mrs.Frazier is survived by one son, Charles L. Frazier of Carmi; one daughter, Debra Kay Tate of Mt. Vernon, IL; and two grandchildren, Jason R. Tate of Mt. Vernon, IL and Charles Christopher Frazier of Evansville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, David L. Hyten.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 19, 2005, at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at White Co. Memorial Garden.

Memorials may be made to the White Co. Humane Society and will be received at Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home.

Frank R. Gunter

Frank R. Gunter, 63 of Carmi died Monday evening December 6, 2004 at the White County Medical Center in Carmi. He was born October 7, 1941 in Mt. Vernon, IN, the son of William “Acy” and Agnes (Wohlhueter) Gunter. He married Delores Ashby on March 10, 1962 in Carmi and she survives.

Mr. Gunter was a custodian at the Carmi Middle School. He worked at Babcock & Wilcox in Mt. Vernon, IN for 18 years prior to coming to the school. He enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the Church of God and served as Clerk for 35 years.

He is survived by his mother, Agnes Gunter, of Carmi; his wife, Delores; one son and daughter-in-law, David & Kim Gunter of Carmi; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda & Mark Renshaw and Jan & Brian Mason, all of Carmi; seven grandchildren, Tanner, Mitchell, Cameron, and Macey Gunter, Sydney Renshaw, Brandon Lee Desper and Brandon Keith Mason; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie & Dee Gunter of Churchill, TN. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2004 at the Church of God in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Memorials may be given to the Church of God Building Fund.

James L. Hamblin

James L. Hamblin, age 62 of Norris City, died Sunday morning March 13, 2005 at his home in Norris City. He was born April 21, 1942 in Mt. Vernon, IN the son of Samuel Asa and Juanita (Bean) Hamblin. He was raised from 5 months old until adulthood by his paternal grandparents, William and Ida Mae Hamblin.

Mr. Hamblin had been an over the road truck driver and also had worked in the oil field. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Norris City and was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Jacquie Hamblin, Jeremy and Bobbie Hamblin and Samuel Hamblin all of Norris City; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jim Schreifels of Norris City; a daughter-in-law, Kim Hamblin of Carmi; eight grandchildren, Matthew William Schreifels, Holly Elisabeth Schreifels, Zachary Todd Hamblin, Kenda Sue Hamblin, Victoria Lynn Hamblin, William Nathanial Hamblin, Toby Bryce Hamblin, and Alexis Marie Hamblin; his mother and step-father, Juanita and Robert Vega of Las Vegas, NV; one half brother, Samuel Max Hamblin of Carmi and one half sister, Linda Clark of Newburgh, IN. He is also survived by his beloved dog “Judy”. He was preceded in death by his father, a son, Anthony Hamblin; and one brother, Charles Hamblin.

Memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday March 18, 2005 at the Norris City Christian Church with Rev. Joe Skaggs officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Southern Illinois. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Misha Belle Hargrave

Misha Belle Hargrave, age 87 of Crossville, died Sunday morning March 6, 2005 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born March 3, 1918 the daughter of William and Ivory (Browning) Warrick. She married George Hargrave on July 11, 1938 and he preceded her in death on April 25, 1975.

Mrs. Hargrave worked as a cook in the Crossville area her entire life. She attended Crossville Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Martha and Bob Layton of Crossville and Donna Daniel of Utica, KY; one son and daughter-in-law, George and Margaret Hargrave of Midland, TX; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; three brothers and sister-in-law, Chester Warrick of Wheaton, Woodrow Warrick of Midland, TX and Herschel and Pearl Warrick of Statesville, NC; two sisters, Pearl Tuggle of Carmi and Barbara Kimbrell of Forest City, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, William Henry, Charles and Elwood Warrick and one sister, Goldie Edith Warrick.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday March 9, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Betty Louise Hillyard

Betty Louise Hillyard, 79, of Carmi, Ill. passed away Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Deaconess Hospital.

Betty was born in 1929 in Thompsonville, Ill. to William and Mattie Johnson. She married Edward “Babe” Hillyard on September 6, 1952 and worked at the White County Draft Board, WROY, Finch Ford, and Washington and Brownsville Schools. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Women's Auxiliary, and First United Methodist Church of Carmi.

Always quick with a smile, Betty cherished time spent with her family and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and socializing with friends.

Betty is survived by her sister, Pauline Richardson of Carmi; daughter, Colleen Taylor and her husband, Terry, of Fairfield, Ill.; daughter, Lynn Hines and her husband, Darren, of Evansville; grandchildren, Tera Goedde, Shane Goedde, and Neely Pierce of Evansville, and Mattie and Jack Taylor of Fairfield, Ill.; and great-grandchildren Conner and Ayden Pierce of Evansville. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband; brothers, William II, Robert, Jewel, Garvis, and Frank Johnson; and sister, Wilma "Mim" Aiken.

Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home, 200 S. Walnut, Carmi, Ill. Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 23, 2005 at Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church of Carmi or to the American Lung Association.

Royal H. “Roy” Hines

Royal H. “Roy” Hines, 91 of Carmi, died Sunday morning March 20, 2005 a the Fountain View Nursing Home in Eldorado. He was born November 21, 1913 in White County, the son of Henry L. and Lydia Hines.

Mr. Hines was employed at Fickert’s Hardware in Carmi before his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Carmi V.F.W., American Legion and Elks Club. He was an avid Cub fan.

He is survived by numerous nephews and nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Horace, Walter, Hyles, Clyde, Harry and Hamer Hines and two sisters, Anna Hines and Hazel Marlin.

Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 11a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the combined units of the Carmi V.F.W. and American Legion Posts.
