Herbert E. Snider, 79

Herbert E. Snider, 79, of Lafayette, died at 7:03 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Home Hospital.

Born Jan. 10, 1926, in Camden, he moved to Lafayette from New Castle in 1952. He married Vianna T. Todd on June 15, 1946, in Richmond, Ind. She survives.

Mr. Snider was a bricklayer and a member of Local 4 in Lafayette. He served in the Army from Dec. 5, 1951, to July 8, 1952.

He attended Christ United Methodist Church and was a member of American Legion Post 11, both in Lafayette, and was a past member of Elks Lodge 143 in West Lafayette.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Scott Snider (wife: Debra) of Aliquippa, Pa.; sisters, Roberta Vaughn of St. Louis, Mo., Nancy Miller of Fowler and Carolyn Sagerman (husband: Jeff) of Denver, Colo.; and a brother, Michael Snider (wife: Lan) of Muncie.

Visitation 5-8 p.m. today at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Service in Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapelat 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, the Rev. Craig LaSuer officiating. Interment Rest Haven Memorial Park. Several nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Betty Cashner and Mildred Todd Davis of New Castle, survive. Preceded in death by his father, Marvin Snider; mother, Daisy Winters Snider; stepmother, Evelyn Utt Snider; and brother, Marvin A. Snider. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Christ United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3610 S. 18th St., Lafayette, IN 47909.

Barbara A. Stephan, 81

Barbara A. Stephan, 81, of West Lafayette, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in her home.

Born March 6, 1924, in Gary, she graduated with a bachelor's degree from Purdue University in 1946 where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She spent most of her adult life in West Lafayette.

She married Robert G. Stephan, owner of the Baltimore Men's Shop on Aug. 4, 1956, in Gary. He survives.

Mrs. Stephan was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the Baltimore Men's Shop.

She was member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was active with women's ministries. She also was active in Chi Omega Alumnae and bridge group. For many years, she was involved in Embroiders Guild, Old Tippecanoe Quilt Guild, West Lafayette Wednesday Morning Quilt Group, LifeCare Service, Gluten Intolerant Support Group, Christian Women's Club and in Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic sorority. She hosted Child Evangelism "Good News" clubs in her home for many years.

Mrs. Stephan enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, mushrooming and participating in the Feast of the Hunters' Moon. She was a longtime fan of Purdue sports and a lifelong Cubs fan.

Surviving with her husband are a son, Rob Stephan (wife: Dana) of West Lafayette; and two daughters, Kim Leaman of Denver, Colo., and Rene' Maule (husband: Michael) of West Lafayette.

Memorial service is at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette. Surviving are 4 grandsons. Preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family at their cottage. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may best be expressed through cards and/or pictures. CLEVINGER, William G.

Dr. William G. Clevinger, 84, of Kokomo, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Alterra Sterling House at Kokomo. Born Nov. 7, 1920, in Brookston to Gerald Ellis and Beulah Condor Clevinger, he graduated from Brookston High School in 1938, Indiana University in 1942 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1944. He interned at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis from 1944 to 1945, practiced family medicine in Kirklin from 1947 to 1950 and in Speedway until 1964. He completed a residency in pathology at Indiana University of Medicine and St. Vincent's Hospital 1968. Dr. Clevinger was board certified in anatomical and clinical pathology, practiced pathology in Kokomo at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Care Center and Howard Community Hospital from 1970 until his retirement in 1983. He married Helen E. Weiderhaft on Feb. 10, 1940. She died Feb. 18, 1993. On Aug. 14, 1993, he married Elizabeth Rayl, and she survives. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army as a physician in the 6th Medical Battalion from 1945 to 1947. Dr. Clevinger was a retired member of the American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association, Howard County Medical Society, American College of Pathology and Murat Shrine and also a member of Kokomo Country Club. Surviving with his wife are his daughter, Dr. Nina Clevinger Smith (husband: Dennis) of Carmel; son, Dr. Brian L. Clevinger (wife: Vickie) of Clarkson Valley, Mo.; 2 granddaughters, Deborah Ann Kingsmith of Indianapolis and Dr. Sandra King Kuehl (husband: Tim) of Zionsville; 2 great-grandchildren, William Dennis Kuehl and Sarah Elizabeth Kuehl; stepson, Michael Rayl (wife Cindy); stepdaughter, Sally Hollingsworth (husband: Robert), both of Kokomo; 4 stepgrandchildren, Joseph Rayl, Abram Rayl (wife: Megan), Jonathan and Peter Hollingsworth; stepgreat-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rayl; and sister, Phyllis Harriman of Indianapolis. Calling 1-4 p.m. Saturday, with memorial service at 4 p.m. at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo, the Rev. Ken Byland and Sister Martin officiating. Private interment of cremains at IOOF Cemetery, Brookston, at a later date. Memorials: St. Joseph Hospital Foundation and Howard Regional Health System. Envelopes will be provided at the Mortuary.

Jacqueline Bayless, 73

DELPHI -- Jacqueline Marion Bayless, 73, died at 2:19 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Delphi where she had been a resident since February.

Born April 24, 1932, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she graduated from Norwood High School. She left Cincinnati in 1960 to move to Chicago, then was transferred to Nashville, Tenn. She worked for Tennessee Senior Citizens Inc. where she directed the meals program for 20 years.

Miss Bayless retired in 1985 and moved to Shepherd, Mich., to be near her nephew's family, then in 2005, she came to Delphi to be closer to her sister.

She was a member and had been active in the Oil City Assembly of God in Michigan. She enjoyed sewing, especially quilting, and she liked to travel.

Survivors include her sister, Jerrie Arney (husband: Robert) of Delphi.

Graveside services in West Union, Ohio, at a later date. Surviving are 2 nephews, Robin Arney (wife: Deb) of Midland, Mich., Kelly Arney (wife: Julie) of Bardstown, Ky.; 2 nieces, Deana Kirk (husband: Steve) of Lafayette, Tamy Denter (husband: Russ) of Traverse City, Mich. Preceded in death by parents, Ray and Ruby Bayless. Arrangements by Davidson Funeral Home, Delphi.

Delores M. French, 78

Delores Marie French, 78, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in her residence at 940 Southland Drive N.

Born July 29, 1927, in St. Louis, she came to Lafayette in 1978.

Mrs. French was a case worker for Tippecanoe Council on Aging for 10 years. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

Her marriage was to Thomas John French on July 2, 1949, in St. Louis, and he survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Thomas M. French (wife: Susan) of Cincinnati and Dale French (wife: Jill) of Harrison, Ohio, and Larry French (wife: Machelle) of Lafayette; a daughter, Geraldine Watson (husband: Don) of Speedway; and a sister, Lilly Mae Reuter, and a brother, Harold Osterloh, both of St. Louis.

Friends may call at Hippensteel Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Monday until the service there at 11 a.m. Monday, with Todd Kussman officiating. Interment, Rest Haven Memorial Park. Surviving are 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 3 brothers, 3 sisters. Memorials to Evangelical Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Judith A. Knowles, 54

FOWLER -- Judith A. Knowles, 54, of Rensselaer, formerly of Fowler, died at 12:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer.

No further information was available. Windler Funeral Home, Fowler.

William R. Payne, 80

BUFFALO -- William R. "Bob" Payne, 80, died at 11:05 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in the Monticello Healthcare Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1925, in Crystal Falls, Mich., he lived in this area as a youngster and was educated in the Buffalo schools.

Mr. Payne retired in 1988 from the Oil Gear Co. in Milwaukee, and returned to the Buffalo area from there in 1991. He was in the Navy during World War II and served for 12 years. He was a member of the Monticello American Legion Post.

On April 20, 1953, he married Catherine J. Miller in Monticello. She died July 3, 1989.

Surviving are his companion, Phyllis Gourley of Buffalo; two daughters, Kristie Payne (companion: George Vesely) of Cudahy, Wis., and Cindy Schwingshakl (husband: Cmdr. Ken) of Slidell, La.; a son, Bill Payne (wife: Kim) of Eagle, Wis.; and two sisters, Arlene Phillips of Gladstone, Mich., and Mary Beth Biancaniello (husband: Ken) of Fort Wayne.

Services are Monday in Monticello. Miller-Roscka Funeral Home, Monticello.

Jack L. Reece, 68

Jack L. Reece, 68, of Syracuse, died at 3:58 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, in Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City.

He was born Jan. 12, 1937, in Lafayette, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955. He attended Purdue University where he played baseball.

Mr. Reece owned and operated Wawasee Insurance Agency prior to retiring. He had lived in Lafayette, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Goshen and Syracuse.

Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Reece of Florida and Stephanie VanSyckle of Delphi; six sisters, Janet Corman of Texas, Joyce Arnold of Tennessee, and Daisy Maxwell, Judy McIntosh, Ruth Crosier and Diane Davis, all of the Lafayette area; and two brothers, Ron Reece and Bud Reece, both of Lafayette.

Service noon Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel in Syracuse, with Harlan Steffen officiating. Surviving are 4 grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, 2 sisters, Lucy Davis, Flora Black. Memorials to Whitley County Hospice.

Robert L. Steele, 68

COLFAX -- Robert Lowell Steele, 68, of 105 Meridian St., died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in the Veterans' Administration Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born Jan. 7, 1937, in Clinton County, he was an Army veteran.

On June 18, 1966, in Lebanon, he married Nancy Garrett, and she survives.

Mr. Steele spent most of his life as a truck driver working 27 years for Diamond Trucking in Francesville. A member and church board trustee of Colfax Wesleyan Church, he was active in Habitat for Humanity, and a member of Teamsters Local 135.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Steele of Colfax; three sons, Dennis Steele (wife: Vicci) of Lafayette, Robert "Tony" Steele (wife: Terrian) of Rising Sun, William E. Steele (wife: Teresa) of Frankfort; four daughters, Mary "Sissy" Walker (husband: Mike) of Colfax, Roberta Cain of Lafayette, Terri Michal of Madison, Ala., and Mindy Perkins of Lebanon; two bothers, James E. Steele of Frankfort and Jack L. Steele (wife: Darlene) of Ladoga; and one sister, Mildred Harshbarger of Frankfort.

Friends may call 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Archer-Weston Funeral Home in Frankfort. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in Colfax Wesleyan Church with the Revs. Tim Walker and Bud Moody co-officiating. Burial in Plainview Cemetery in Colfax with military honors by Colfax American Legion Honor Guard. Among the survivors are 24 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Memorials in his memory appreciated to the Steele family.

Arnold E. Greenburg, 84

FOWLER -- Arnold Edward Greenburg, 84, died at 7:15 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in his Fowler residence.

Born March 7, 1921, in Lochiel, he was on the Wadena Indians basketball team, graduating from Wadena High School in 1940.

He married H. Lucille Swango on March 7, 1947, in Fowler, and she survives.

Mr. Greenburg was known in Fowler and Benton County as "Greenburg the Barber," having been a barber for 41 years. He was in the Coast Guard during World War II, from 1942 to 1946. He served in the South Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Hutchinson.

He was a member of Fowler American Legion Post 57, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1348, and the Fowler United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Steven Greenburg (wife: Carol) of Galveston; two daughters, Marsha Lykins of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Anne Molter (husband: Jim) of Fowler.
