Joan Ellen (Demerling) Hickman
LANSING, Ill. -- Joan Ellen (Demerling) Hickman, of North Fort Myers, Fla., passed away at her
home Sunday, July 18, 2010, from a cancer-related illness.
She was born July 2, 1944 in Lansing, Ill., to Walter and Angeline (Galeche) Demerling. She
graduated from Lowell High School with the class of 1962 and married her sweetheart James D.
Hickman Sr. June 9 of that same year.
She enjoyed gardening, baking and all her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jim; and three sisters: Mary Black of Bonita Springs,
Fla., Helen Diezel of Plymouth, and Lois Noland of Hammond.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving children: Robert (Peggy) Hickman of North Fort
Myers, Fla., David (Sharon) Hickman of Plymouth, Sherry (Virgil) Newberry of Hamlet, James
(Mary Ann) Hickman of Plymouth, Charles Hickman of Plymouth, Julie (Michael) Reed of
Hamlet, Carol (Chris) Graf of Punta Gorda, Fla. And Bill Hickman of California; as well as 12
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter, Angeline Reed.

Isaac Harold Barlow
ARGOS -- Isaac Harold Barlow, 100, 14400 Juniper Rd., Argos, went to be with the Lord July
19, 2010 at 9:35 p.m. at his daughter's residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 3, 1909 in Argos, to William Warren Barlow and Emma Jane (Bowman)
Barlow and lived all of his life in the Argos community. He married Goldie E. Pletcher Dec. 3,
1938 in Anderson. She died July 16, 2005.
He worked as a molder in several foundries: Studebaker Foundry during World War II, Bremen,
Argos, and Rochester Foundries, and retired from Plymouth Foundry in 1964. He then worked
part-time for IRECO and Indiana Tool when he celebrated his 70th birthday.
He was a graduate of Argos High School's class of 1929, and was a member of the Plymouth
Church of God, Plymouth.
Harold was of a quiet, unassuming disposition and manifested that gentle, patient, humble spirit
of a true Christian. He was always quick to tell others that the Lord was an integral part of his life.
He is survived by his children: Priscilla Norris of Argos, Gene Barlow and wife Alma of Argos,
Donald Barlow and wife Kathalene of Staffordsville, Ky., and Rosemary Ferrill of Rock River,
Wyoming; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Ruth Lee of Vallejo, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Joseph Barlow; sisters, Anna Imes and
Francis Crabb; and three grandsons: Carl Barlow, Scott Ferrill, Nathan Norris
Friends may visit with the family Saturday July 24, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Earl Grossman
Funeral Home, Argos.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday July 25 at the funeral home with Rev. Wayne Mikel
officiating.
Burial will follow at Maple Grove cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Plymouth Church of God; 11734 9A Road, Plymouth, IN, 46563.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos.

Gloria Jeanne Gilbert
PLYMOUTH – Gloria Jeanne Gilbert, 67, an area resident most of her life, died at 7:45 a.m.
Monday, July 19, 2010, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
The daughter of James E. and Pauline Krouse Elliott, Gloria was born in Plymouth Aug. 9, 1942.
She was a 1960 graduate of Columbia City High School.
April 11, 1964, Gloria and Bernard “Jim” Gilbert were married in Starke County. Jim preceded
her in death May 4, 1996.
A homemaker, Gloria had also worked in housekeeping at a local nursing home for 10 years.
She enjoyed collecting dolls, antiques and was very interested in genealogy.
Gloria is survived by her sons, Brian James Gilbert of Plymouth and John Philip Gilbert and his
children, Valkyrie and Lachlan of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Also surviving are a sister, Mary Anne (Donald) Roebuck of Middlebury; a niece, Nanette Walker
of Springfield, Ore. And a nephew, Mark Roebuck and his children Tyler and Ryan of Middlebury.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Friends will be welcome to share memories with Gloria’s family from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Saturday, July 24, at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral Services for Gloria, officiated by the Rev. Charles Krieg, will be held immediately
following visitation at 12 p.m. Saturday, in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Burr Oak cemetery, Burr Oak.
Memorials in Gloria’s name may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 112 S.
Center St., Plymouth, IN, 46563.

Sherman, Jr. Prater
PLYMOUTH – Sherman Prater Jr., 68, died following an extended illness at 2:50 a.m. Monday,
July 19, 2010 in Hospice House of St. Joseph County.
He is survived by his wife Lee; special friends: Brent and Sherry Schafer of Plymouth, and Kevin
and Teresa Bock of Sebring, Fla.; a brother; and two sisters.
There will be no services or visitation.
Memorials may be made in Sherm’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, 30 N.
Michigan Avenue, Suite 2015, Chicago, Ill., 60602.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth is assisting with arrangements.

Matelyn Tolson
KNOX -- Matelyn Tolson, 65, died Monday, July 19, 2010 in Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.
She is survived by her husband Raymond Tolson Jr.; a son, Robert Brewer of Elkhart; her
mother, Nanie Joseph of Knox; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers: Earl Smith
of Knox, Arthur Manns of Kentucky and Charles Smith of Florida; sisters: Linda Patrick of Knox,
D.J. Fox of South Carolina, Dulcine Hunnicutt of Knox and Barbara Robinson of Medaryville; a
stepdaughter; and two stepsons.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. (CT) Thursday, July 22 and one hour prior to services
Friday at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, July 23 at the Highway Chapel Church of God,
Hamlet.
Burial will follow at the Crown Hill cemetery, Knox.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James S. Landis
Quarryville, Pennsylvania - James S. Landis, 83, of Quarryville Pa., formerly of Plymouth, died
July 20, 2010 at his residence.
He is survived by his wife Nadine Zahm, Plymouth.
Funeral services took place at 11 a.m. July 24 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Quarryville.
Johnson-Danielson funeral home, Plymouth, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ileana Tincau
KNOX -- Ileana Tincau, 76, of Knox, died Thursday, July 22, 2010 in her home.
She is survived by a son, John Tincau of Knox; and two grandsons.
Visitation will take place from noon to 2 p.m. (Central Time) Saturday, July 24 at Rannells
Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
Burial will follow at the Holy Cross cemetery, Hamlet.

Ruth H. Grossman
PLYMOUTH -- Ruth H. Grossman, 95, of 635 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, formerly of 208 N.
Michigan St., Argos died at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth,
following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 14, 1915 near Argos, in Marshall County, to George and Nora (Carpenter)
Myers and lived her entire life in the Argos community.
She married Holice A. Grossman July 4, 1937 in Argos.
He preceded her in death in January of 1974.
Upon her marriage to Holice, Ruth became an integral part of the funeral home, and in 1946
together they purchased the Grossman Funeral Home from Otto Grossman. For the next 50
years she oversaw the day-to-day tasks at the funeral home and semi-retired in 1986, with full
retirement coming in 1996.
She was a member of the Argos Bible Church, and the American Legion Auxiliary #48 both of
Argos; the Order of Eastern Star #26 of Plymouth; Rainbow Girls and was Mother Advisor for the
Argos chapter. She was a graduate of Argos High School’s class of 1933.
The Argos Alumni Association named her to the Hall of Fame June 6, 1998, for her life long
service to her family, community, and church. The Argos Area Chamber of Commerce awarded
her the Community Service Award in recognition of long and outstanding service to the Argos
Community April 22, 1985.
She is survived by two grandsons, Chris Grossman of Charleston, S.C. and Greg (Julie)
Grossman of Greenville, S.C.; great-grandson, Jackson Grossman; several nieces and nephews
(niece Shirley Pomeroy and husband Jim, of Bremen, have been her caregivers for several
years); and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Grossman of Charleston, S.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert Grossman (January 1985);
four sisters: Clara Garner, Eva Burkett, Edna Burkett, and Zella McCay; and four brothers: Harry
Myers, Kenneth Myers, Charles Myers, and Robert Myers.
Friends may visit with the family Wednesday July 28, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Earl Grossman
Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Mark Fishburn and
Rev. Phillip Platz officiating.
Burial will follow at Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Argos EMS, Attn: Candi, 201W. Walnut St., Argos,
IN, 46501 or the Argos Bible Church, 210 S. Maple St., Argos, IN, 46501.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos.

Larry "Hammer" Richard Mahler
CULVER -- Larry “Hammer” Richard Mahler, 69, of Culver, passed away July 24, 2010 after
losing his battle with lung cancer.
Larry was born Dec. 20, 1940 in Leiters Ford, to Pete and Dorothy Mahler. He graduated from
Aubbeenaubee High School in Leiters Ford. Larry started his career as a mechanic at an early age.
In 1960 he married Sharon Baker with whom he raised three children. His first job as a mechanic
was for his father-in-law Chuck Baker who owned the Standard Service Station. He quickly
became known as the “go-to-guy” for automobile repair. It was not until 1990 that he opened his
own “Hammer’s Garage” at 535 S. Main Street.
Soon after, Ron James was hired. Later Larry purchased the building at 215 W. Jefferson St.
which remains the current location. Ron James will continue as new owner and operator of
“Hammer’s Garage.”
Hunting and fishing in earlier years, and mushroom hunting in later years, were his favorite past
times. He was known to go to extreme lengths to protect the location of his mushroom hunting
spots. Hammer’s happiest moments were sharing stories at the garage. He always had time to
tell or listen to a tale being spun.
He is survived by a son, Edward Mahler of DeBeque Colorado; daughters, Susan Mahler and
Lisa Mahler both of Culver; grandchildren, Gavin and Chloe Salyer; mother, Dorothy Mahler;
sisters, Ginger Shirley (Keith) of Albuquerque N.M., and Paulette (Dick) Hanna of Plymouth;
brother, Greg Mahler of Monterey; seven stepchildren; step grandchildren; and step great grandchildren;
faithful dog Missy; and shop cat Sassy.
Preceding him in death were his father, Ernest “Pete” Mahler; and wives, Donna Sheperd Mahler
and Vickey Farlow Mahler.
Visitation will be at Odom Funeral Home, 104 E. Lakeshore Drive, Culver, Wednesday, July 28,
from 2 to 8 p.m.
Funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 29, at Odom Funeral Home with burial at Culver
Masonic cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Marshall County Humane Society
in lieu of flowers.
The family is grateful to the Center for Hospice Care and the many friends and customers of
“Hammer’s Garage” for their kindness and thoughtfulness expressed during his illness.

Walter Pudio
KNOX -- Walter Pudlo, 69, of Knox, died Saturday, July 24, 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; son, Daniel (Tamala) Pudlo of North Liberty; daughters,
Margaret (Mark) Hunter of Arlington, Va., and Christina Pudlo of Knox; three grandchildren; and
a sister, Roberta (Willie) Henning of Plymouth.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel,
Knox. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
