Phillip James Smith
PLYMOUTH — Phillip James Smith, 52, a resident of 13th Road, Plymouth, for the past five
years, passed away Sunday morning at his family home.
Phil began to experience the effects of ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease — in the fall of 2007 and
was diagnosed in February of 2008.
Phil was born on November 30, 1956 in Plymouth, the son of Billy J. and Kay F. (Morgan) Smith.
Raised in Plymouth with siblings, sister; Carol and brother; Robin, he graduated from PHS with
the Class of 1975.
He was a twenty-three year employee of the Young Door Corporation and most recently was a
crew driver with the Indiana Dept. of Transportation until March of 2008.
On January 27, 1989 he and Gayle (Whitaker) Warner were married in Plymouth. Together they
have three children; Andrea N. (Warner) and husband James E. Parker of Huntersville, N.C.,
and Elizabeth K. Smith and Sean M. Smith, both at home. Grandsons include Austin and Alex
Parker.
When the children were young, Phil helped with coaching Little League and the Junior Football
League. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as golf and the sport of fishing especially trips into
Minnesota. His team was the Chicago Bears and he was a member of the Loyal Order of the
Moose No. 741.
Phil never allowed the progression of his illness to keep him from the sidelines of the basketball
and volleyball courts, softball field or track, where he was often seen in his wheelchair supporting
his children’s many activities along with his wife and parents.
Also surviving is his sister and family Carol A. and Mike Stockberger of Walkerton and brother;
Robin D. and Diana Smith and family of Plymouth which includes several other nieces and nephews.
Preceding in death were paternal grandparents; Carl and Orpha Smith and maternal
grandparents; Oscar and Hazel Morgan.
Family and friends are invited to share memories in the life of Phil Smith on Wednesday, April 29
from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
To honor Phil’s wishes there will be no formal funeral services held. He and the family would ask
for memorials to assist in a cure, be given to the ALS Association, Indiana Chapter c/o 6525 E.
82nd Street, Suite 115, Indianapolis, IN 46250.

Ted E. Milkey
CARMEL — Ted E. Milkey, 56, Carmel, died Monday, April 27, 2009, in Community North
Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
A devoted son, loving father, husband and brother, Ted died peacefully surrounded by his family.
Born in Plymouth on June 17, 1952, Ted was the son of Ralph and Doris Julia DeMien Milkey.
A tall, thin basketball player, he graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1970,
and from Butler University in 1975, having played basketball for four years at both schools and
varsity tennis at PHS.
At Butler he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Ted retired in 2005, as the C.F.O. of Community Hospital, Indianapolis, after over 20 years of
dedicated service.
He was an avid poker player and enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas.
Ted is survived by his wife, Paula (Surber) Milkey; two sons: Scott Aaron Milkey, Indianapolis,
and Jeffrey Adam Milkey, Cincinnati, Ohio; and a daughter, Anne Elizabeth Milkey, Carmel.
A brother, Russ and Kim Milkey of Arcadia, and several nieces and nephews survive as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services for Ted will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in New Oakhill cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Ted’s memory may be made to the Wellness Community Center for

Shirley M. Raley
WALKERTON — Shirley M. Raley, 75, died Monday, April 27, 2009 in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton.
Survivors include one son, David Raley of Walkerton; two daughters: Shelley George of
Walkerton and Diana Jacobowski of Elmhurst, Ill.; one brother, James Chairo of Villa Park, Ill.;
six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, April 30 at 8 p.m. (Central Time) at Rannells Funeral Home,
Koontz Lake Chapel. Visitation is Thursday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. CDT until the time of
services.

Margaret Emma Wise
PLYMOUTH – Margaret Emma Wise, 84, died at 4:35 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2009 in Miller’s
Merry Manor, Plymouth. Her death followed an unexpected stroke which occurred on Sunday,
April 19. She was a lifetime Plymouth resident.
She was born Oct. 22, 1924 to DeVere A. and Effie M. (Hooker) Wise. She graduated from
LaPaz High School in 1942. Margaret then attended the Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul,
Minn., graduating in 1947. She traveled with three ladies doing home missionary work and then
attended the United Pentecostal Church, teaching Sunday School because she believed Acts 2:
Verses 38 and 39 and all of God’s promises.
Margaret worked at Borden Ice Cream Co. and Standard Oil Co. before attending Bethel College
graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. While teaching
at Lakeville Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School in Plymouth, she attended
classes at Indiana University working on her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education,
graduating in 1961. She then taught Special Education classes in South Bend after receiving a
certificate in Special Education at I.U. She retired in 1980 after teaching 23 years to care
for her mother.
She enjoyed playing the organ, reading, oil painting and visiting with family and friends.
Margaret is survived by a sister, Elizabeth A. (Betty) Sowers and her husband Lowell; four
nephews: Terry L., Alan D., Timothy W., and Kevin M. Sowers along with four great nephews
and six great nieces. Her sister-in-law, Wanda (Wise) Balsley also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Walter Wayne Wise; and three sisters:
Effie LaVerne Wise, Wilma Jean Wise and Virginia Faye Wise.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. in her beloved United Pentecostal
Church – House of Prayer, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Plymouth, where services will be
held Friday, May 1 at 11 a.m. Pastors Ronald Humphrey and Paul Cecrle will preside.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts may be made to the church or the donor’s favorite charity.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth is assisting in arrangements.

Terry D. Bagley
PLYMOUTH — Terry D. Bagley, 70, 2428 W. Jefferson St., Plymouth, passed away Tuesday,
April 28, 2009, at 3:55 p.m. at the Veterans Hospital, in Indianapolis.
Terry was born on Sept. 12, 1938, in Plymouth, to Frank and Mary (Cunning-ham) Bagley. He
proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Korea in the
communications department. Terry and Sarah Benson were married on June 9, 1961, in LaPaz.
Terry worked for the railroad, as a conductor, for 30 years. He enjoyed reading about the Civil
War, World War II, and researching genealogy.
Terry is survived by his wife, Sarah; their daughter, Tricia (Joe) Deisch of Plymouth; their sons:
Duane Bagley of Plymouth, Shane Bagley of Argos and David (Christine) Bagley of Eureka,
Calif.; three grandchildren: Christian, Lauren and Madisyn; his brother, Harold (Bonnie) Bagley of
Bremen; his half-brother, Mike (Pam) Markley of Bremen; his sister, Debbie (Bunk) Eppert of
LaPaz; several nieces; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen in
1993; his brother David; and his sisters, Jean and Fran.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 11 a.m., at the Plymouth Missionary
Church, 1350 E. Jefferson St., Plymouth. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.
Military graveside honors will be presented by the American Legion Post #2 7of Plymouth.
Friends are invited to visit with the family and share their memories of Terry Friday, May 1, 2009,
from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN,
46563, and one hour prior to the funeral, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Plymouth Missionary Church
Saturday, May 2, 2009.
The family would like for memorial contributions be given to the Marshall County Humane
Society, P .O. Box 25, Plymouth, IN 46563, or to the Marshall County Cancer Association, P. O.
Box 895, Plymouth, IN 46563.

Bob ‘Beans’ Hulse
PLYMOUTH — Bob, affectionately known as “Beans, ” Hulse, 62, Plymouth, died, following a
short illness, at 8:04 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center,
Plymouth.
Beans had lived in Plymouth for the last 17 years, coming from the Chesterton area.
He was born on Dec. 6, 1946, in Gary. He was the son of Howard and Marie Hulse. He
graduated from Edison High School in Lake Station.
Beans served as an Army trained combat medic from 1967 to 1969.
On March 25, 1983, in Valparaiso, Beans and Janice Noel were married .
He was employed by Bethlehem Steel for 35 years, retiring on Jan. 15, 2002.
He was an avid Harley Davidson rider and a member of A.B.A.T.E. for many years. He loved to
watch and appreciated all kinds of wild life.
Beans is survived by his wife, Janice; a brother, Richard (Betty) Hulse; and a sister, Rose Crose,
both of Lake Station. Rick and Kelly Sears, brother and sister-in-law of Lumberton, Texas also
survive.
Four nieces and two nephews survive as well. They are: Shawn MacKay, Chris Godby, Andrea
Sears, Rachel Vasquez, Rick Hulse and Will Vasquez.
Twelve great-nieces and nephews also survive together with five great-great nieces and
nephews and one on the way. Beans will also be missed by his many, many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Wayne and Marge Noel.
Beans’ family will welcome his friends to share memories from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2,
2009, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Beans will follow visitation at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the funeral home.
Memorial gifts in Beans’ memory may be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

Janet Sue Riggle
ROCHESTER — Janet Sue Riffle, 76, of Rochester, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009
at her residence.
She is survived by daughters: Kelly Franklin of Rochester and Kerry (Brian) Nelson of
Rochester; son, Jacob “Hank” (Chris) Riffle of Akron; daughter-in-law, Gayle Riffle of Rochester;
eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Bette Reynolds of Rochester; and brother,
Charles Miller of Rochester.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 1 in the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
Interment will follow the service at the Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of Fulton County or to the Animal Shelter Building Fund.

John "Jack" G. Lewis
BREMEN — John (Jack) G. Lewis, 90, of Bremen, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at
the Bremen Health Care Center.
He is survived by five daughters: Nancy Cook of Salem, Ore., Mary Virginia Lewis of Austin,
Texas, Patricia Lewis of Plymouth, Jean (Mark) Naylor of Winchester, Va. And Cynthia Scholar
of Redman, Ore.
The Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, is in charge of the arrangements. A private graveside
service was held, with burial in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.

Kenneth D. Powell
ARGOS — Kenneth D. Powell, 77, of 411 E. Walnut St., Argos, passed away Wednesday, April
29, 2009, at 6:21 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
Kenneth was born May 17, 1931, in Macy to Glenn and Loda (Dowd) Powell. Kenneth and Betty
Klingerman were united in marriage on Nov. 6, 1949, and had been married for almost 60 years.
Kenneth was very active in his community. He was an Argos E.M.T. and a fireman. He served
on the board of trustees at 1st Source Bank. He was a township trustee and served as the Clerk-
Treasurer for the town of Argos. In 1999 Kenneth received the Argos Alumni Honoree Award.
He was the sexton for the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. cemetery, the Jordan cemetery, and the Maple
Grove cemetery. He served on the Marshall County Tourism Board and was a past member of
the Masonic Lodge. Kenneth was a member of the Maxinkuckee IOOF Lodge #373, Argos
United Methodist Church, and the Lions Club, in Argos.
Kenneth was a distributor for Wearly Monuments. He had worked in the business office of Divine
Heart Seminary, in Donaldson. Kenneth and Betty were the former owners of the Argos News
Stand. He also prepared income taxes for other people. He enjoyed going fishing in upper
Michigan and loved to go antiquing. He was an avid mushroom hunter and liked to play euchre.
Kenneth loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Kenneth is survived by wife, Betty; their daughters: Kennetta (Dick) Smith of Argos and Sue
(Mike) Trump of Argos; his grandsons: Mike (Sherry) Smith, Matt (Dianne) Smith, and Jason
(Amber) Trump; his great-grandchildren: Kyle, Meagan, Monica, Zachery, Matthew, Alyssa,
Breanna, Isaiah, Kourtney, Kylie, and Shauna; and his great-granddog Einstein; his sister,
Priscilla Burkett of Argos; his brother, Cecil (Phyllis) Powell of New Castle; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Argos United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Walker officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Argos.
The time of visitation, for family and friends, will be Monday, May 4, 2009 from 2 to 8 p.m. and
one hour prior to the service on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Argos United
Methodist Church, 540 N. Michigan St., Argos. There will be a Lodge service Monday at 8 p.m.
at the church, presented by the Maxinkuckee IOOF Lodge #373, in honor of Kenneth.
The VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563, is handling the arrangements.
The family would like for memorial contributions be given to the Argos United Methodist Church;
the American Lung Association, 115 W. Washington St. #1180 Indianapolis, IN; or the American
Heart Association, 3616 Pay Sphere Circle, Chicago, IL, 60674.
