NAPPANEE — Aiko Svendsen, 82, of Nappanee, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009 at
Elkhart General Hospital.
She is survived by her husband Earl Svendsen of Nappanee; daughter, Lumi (Devoe) Hoffer of
New Paris; son, John Thomas (Wanda) Svendsen of Pensacola, Fla.; one granddaughter; two
great-grandson; three sisters and one brother, all in Japan.
Visitation is Saturday, May 23 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church, Nappanee. A
memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church.
No flowers please. Memorials may be made to Open Door in Nappanee.
Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary A. Young
VALPARAISO — Mary A. Young, 88, of Valparaiso, formerly of Plymouth, died Saturday, May
16, 2009. She was born Sept. 14, 1920 in Jefferson, Ohio to Raymond W. and Augusta
(Giddings) Bennett. She married William S. Young of Pontiac, Mich. Nov. 2, 1945.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Richard S. Young; her sister, Lucy F.
(Tulie) Bennett; and two brothers: J. Edgar Bennett and Sheldon A. Bennett.
She is survived by two daughters: Barbara A. Young of Valparaiso and Kathy J. (James) Harvuot
of Warsaw; one granddaughter, Ann Michelle Harvuot of Warsaw; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary grew up in Santa Fe, N.M. and met her husband, Bill, while working as a civilian on the
Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M. They were married in Santa Fe after World War II and
shortly thereafter moved to Michigan where Young Door Company was founded. They moved to
Plymouth in 1959.
Mary was a member of the Beta Delta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc., in Plymouth and the
Alpha Associate Chapter in Valparaiso. Mary was an active member in the First Presbyterian
Church in Plymouth. She served on the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph County Chapter of
the American Lung Association in South Bend. Mary was awarded a Sagamore of the Wabash
by Governor Otis “Doc” Bowen in 1980. In the over 40 years that Mary and Bill lived in Plymouth,
they were actively involved in and supported numerous charitable and civic organizations. Before
leaving Plymouth, they built and donated to the City the William and Mary Young Amphitheater
located in Centennial Park in Plymouth.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 401 N. Walnut St., Plymouth,
Friday, May 29, 2009 at 12 p.m. (EST). There will be a gathering of friends immediately following
the service at Christos’ Banquet Center, 830 Lincolnway East, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marshall County Community Foundation for the
William S. and Mary A. Young Arts Fund (www.marshallcountycf.org).
Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso is in charge of arrangements.

Christine Diana Bayley Bennett
CARMEL — Christine Diana Bayley Bennett, 48, of Carmel, died Saturday, May 17, 2009.
She is survived by her husband, Trent and their children: Blake and Kyle Bennett; parents, L. H.
and Dianne Bayley; siblings: Kim (Jeff) Fisher and Mike Bayley; and grandmother; Aurelia Oros.
Visitation is Wednesday, May 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Leppert Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel,
Carmel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 20 at 10 a.m. in St. Luke
Catholic Church, Indianapolis. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Peace cemetery.

Lee H. Kreighbaum
PLYMOUTH — Lee H. Kreighbaum, 83, of 315 Indiana Avenue, Plymouth, passed away at 9:50
p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Miller’s Merry Manor, in Plymouth.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in South Bend to Anthony and Barbara (Tschida) Hickey. On
May 27, 1944, Lee and Richard Kreighbaum were united in marriage. Together they raised their
family of five children. Lee and Richard were former owners of the Corner Tavern in Culver. Lee
enjoyed doing volunteer work with the local Red Cross Bloodmobile. She also did volunteer
typing for Ancilla Domini in Donaldson. Lee was a member Saint Michael Catholic Church,
where she was active with the Altar Rosary Society.
Lee is survived by her son, John and (Susie) Kreighbaum of Plymouth; four daughters: Linda
and (Lonnie) Bostelman of Antwerp, Ohio, Jane and (Pete) Van Etten of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Jill
Howard of Plymouth, and Jan and (Scott) Swanson of Phoenix, Ariz. Also surviving are 11
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Lee came from a family of three sisters and eight
brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, on June 11, 1992.
Funeral services, for Lee, will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 22, 2009, at the VAN
GILDER FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Father William Kummer officiating. Burial will be in
New Oak Hill cemetery, in Plymouth.
A time of visiting and sharing memories with the Kreighbaum family, will be Thursday, May 21,
2009, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth,
IN 46563.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 112 S.
Center St., Plymouth, IN 46563, or to the choice of the donor.

Marjorie I. Lewallen
TIPPECANOE — Marjorie I. Lewallen, a resident of 18557 East St. in Tippecanoe, passed away
Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 11 p.m. peacefully in her home. She was born the daughter of James
Earl Sanner and Glendolyn Dipert Sanner on Aug. 27, 1915 at Tippecanoe.
She had worked at Da-Lite Screen of Warsaw. She was a graduate of Tippecanoe High School
with a class of 17 in 1933 of which she was Salutatorian of the class. She and her husband
spent many winters in the Bonita Springs, Fla. area; she was also an avid Cubs fan. She was
also a member of the Riverview Community church of Tippecanoe.
Marjorie was married Sept. 7, 1940 to Charles E. “Red” Lewallen who died Febr. 19, 2009.
She is survived by her three sons: Larry K. and wife Nancy of Southmont, N.C., Charles E. and
wife Carol A. of Plymouth and Phillip and wife Christine M. of Bonita Springs, Fla.; eight
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters and brothers.
A celebration of Marjorie’s life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21 in the Deaton-Clemens
Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon, with Pastor Rod Ruberg of Riverview Community
Church officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 in the Deaton-Clemens
Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in the Tippecanoe cemetery at Tippecanoe.
Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Riverview Community Church, 3780 State
Road 110, Tippecanoe, IN 46570 or to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. 112 S.
Center St., Plymouth, IN 46563.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Robert James Blount
NORTH JUDSON — Robert James Blount, 68, of North Judson, died Monday, May 18, 2009.
He is survived by his wife, Earlene Blount of North Judson; sons: Mike Blount of North Judson,
Earl Blount of Plymouth, Timothy Blount of Las Vegas, Nev. and Bob Blount of North Judson;
daughter, Sharon Blount of North Judson; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
brothers: Bill Blount of Campsville, Ky., LeRoy Blount of Morocco and David Blount of LaPorte;
and sister, Pat Blount of Knox.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Highland
cemetery.

Robert Allen Bowell
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Robert “Bob” Allen Bowell, 59, of Benton Harbor, Mich., died at
12:29 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, at Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph, Mich.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Bowell of Argos; sister, Sue (Doug) Stults of Waterville,
Ohio; sister, Lisa Dunfee of Argos; brother, Randy Bowell of Maumee, Ohio; and friend Chuck
Witkoske of Benton Harbor.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Argos United Methodist Church, Argos.
ARGOS — Robert “Bob” Allen Bowell, 59, of Benton Harbor, Mich., passed away Monday, May
18, 2009 at Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph, Mich. from cancer.
Survivors include his mother, Helen I Elliott Bowell of Argos; sisters: Sue (Doug) Stults of
Waterville, Ohio and Lisa Dunfee of Argos; brother, Randy Bowell of Maumee, Ohio; nephews:
Doug (Jen) Stults Jr. of Wilmington, N.C., Todd Stults of Cleveland, Ohio, Bryan (Aubree) Hagan
of Plymouth, Alex Hagan of Argos, Justin Dunfee of Argos and Kyle Bowell of Maumee, Ohio;
and one niece, Taylor Bowell of, Maumee, Ohio; and great nephew, Blake Stults of Wilmington,
N.C.
Bob’s father, Herbert “Bud” G. Bowell, proceeded him in death in July, 1996.
Bob attended Ball State University in 1968. He worked at Modern Plastics, Benton Harbor, Mich.
From 1969 to 2001.
Graveside services will be this Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Argos Maple Grove
cemetery, with Pastor Ken Walker, Argos United Methodist Church, officiating

William M. Mattson
GROVERTOWN — William M. Mattson, 70, died Monday, May 18, 2009 in Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; son, James Mattson; daughters: Joy Chavez, Lynn
Williams, Billie Jo Mattson, Amy Mattson and Kerrie Neal; sister, Mildred Mattson; six
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
There will be no services or visitation.
Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel. Is handling the arrangements.

Dona Jean Rhoades
OSCEOLA — Dona Jean Rhoades, 74, of Osceola, passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at her
son’s residence of natural causes. Dona was born Jan. 6, 1935 in Plymouth to the late Roy and
Blanche (Kimble) Markley. On Dec. 1, 1951, Dona married Mr. Robert Rhoades. Robert
preceded her in death, passing away Oct. 21, 2001.
Surviving is her son, Michael Rhoades and his wife Teresa of Osceola and their daughters,
Chelsea and Lindsey Rhoades, and her son Clifford Rhoades and his wife Kelly of Tulsa, Okla.
and their children Caleb, Kassandra, Alicia, Joshua and Christian Rhoades. Also surviving is her
sister Bette Warner of Mishawaka, and half-sisters Leslie Markley and Debbie Eppert, both of
Plymouth.
Dona was preceded in death by her brother, George Markley; and her sisters: Helen Casteel,
Dorothy Youngman and Kitsy Weldy.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home,
Osceola. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dave Stauffer of the New Life Baptist
Church at 11 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with interment to follow in
Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Dona was employed by the Holiday Inn in Niles, Mich. As a waitress for many years until she
retired to care for her granddaughters. Dona enjoyed traveling with her husband during his
military career, and lived abroad as an Army wife for ten years. Dona also served as a volunteer
at Regency Place where she ran the gift shop for many years.
In her spare time, Dona enjoyed playing BINGO and was a member of the Retired Enlisted
Association National Auxiliary. She was also a member of the New Life Baptist Church in
Osceola for many years.
In her memory, contributions may be given to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111
Sunnybrook Drive, South Bend, Indiana 46637.

Robert G. Taylor
MACY — Robert G. Taylor, 88, of Macy, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Woodbridge Health
Campus, Logansport.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Kinley of Denver; daughter, Joy (Dennis) Groninger of North
Manchester; sons: Lester (Susan) Taylor of Anderson and Cary (Sherri) Taylor of Fishers; nine
grandchildren; and sister, Martha Leach of Royal Center.
Visitation is Wednesday, May 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Thursday at
the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Services are Thursday, May 21 at 1 p.m. at the
funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the 1st Baptist Church of Rochester or the American Cancer Society.

Gloria f. Ballenger
ROCHESTER — Gloria F. Ballenger, 81, of Rochester, died at 8:22 a, n, Wednesday, May 19,
2009 at the Woodbridge Health Campus, Logansport.
She is survived by her husband Herbert of Rochester; daughter, Krystal K. Smith of Rochester;
two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and a brother, John (Marilyn) Ensign of Peru.
A celebration of the life of Gloria F. Ballenger will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23in the First
Christian Church, Rochester. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Good Family Funeral
Home, Rochester and one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will follow at the
Mount Hope cemetery of Athens.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to the charity of ones choice.
