Norma Rose (Cole) Smith, Attica
Norma Rose (Cole) Smith, 73, formerly of Attica and had been residing at Regency Place in Lafayette, died Friday, January 26, 2007, at 10:00 p.m. in Regency Place.
Norma was born in Jordan Township of Warren County, Indiana, on June 17, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Homer and Frances Lucas Cole. She graduated from Covington High School in 1951 and the Lakeview School of Nursing in Danville, IL, in 1954.
Norma was a registered nurse first working as a private nurse for Dr. Nelson of West Lebanon. She later worked at Lakeview and the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Danville, IL. Her last job was with the Fountain-Warren County Health Department, where she retired in 1997.
Norma was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and the Women’s Auxiliary of the V.F.W. Post # 3318 of Attica. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna (husband-Leonard) Pritchard, Lafayette; a brother, Laurence (wife-Bonnie) Cole, Covington; two grandsons, Travis Hockenbury, Attica and Anthony Pritchard, Veedersburg; two great grandchildren, Madison and Alex. She was preceded in death a grandson, Justin Hockenbury.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Monday, Jan. 29th, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 30th, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Colleen Barkdull officiating. Burial will follow in the Rainsville Cemetery, Rainsville, IN. Memorial contributions are preferred to the American Diabetes. Association.

Margaret H. Hesser
Margaret Helen Hesser, 86, Hillsboro, died Thursday, January 25, 2007, 10:40 a.m. at Rosewalk Village, Lafayette, Indiana.
Born December 12, 1920, in Hillsboro, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Glen and Elsie Bailey Templeton.
She was a life long resident of Hillsboro, graduating from Hillsboro High School and worked for many years as an operator at Merchants and Farmers Telephone Company in Hillsboro. She was an Avon representative and was a collector of Avon collectables. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and needlework. On October 30, 1940, she married Forrest M. “Red” Hesser. He preceded her in death October 28, 1975.
She was a member of the Hillsboro Christian Church and a former member of the Fern Chapter # 194 Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are son, Forrest Jan Hesser, wife Sue, of Hillsboro, grandsons, Forrest Cody Hesser, Baton Rouge, LA, Matthew Jay (Elisabeth) Hesser, St Charles, MO, and Michael Clay (Margriet) Hesser, Greenwood, IN, and three great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is one brother Lex (Betty) Templeton, South Bend, Indiana. One sister, Opal Lowe and three brothers, Billy Templeton, Thomas Templeton, and Max Templeton preceded her in death
Friends will be received at the Maus Funeral Home, Hillsboro, on Saturday, January 27th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Gravesite services will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro with Pastor Linda Lawler officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Forrest M. Hesser.

Sarah F. Mitton, Attica
Sarah F. (Jenkins) Mitton, 53, of 107 W. Monroe St., Attica, died at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at her residence.
Sarah was born on July 7, 1953 in Springfield, TN. She was the daughter of William Harold “Jack” and Betty Sue (West) Jenkins. She was raised in Springfield and moved to Attica in 1969.
Sarah married Steven Michael “Mike” Mitton on August 20, 1972 in Attica.
Sarah had worked as a Qualified Medical Assistant for the Indiana Soldiers Home for five years. Prior to her work at the soldiers home, she worked for Wabash National for ten years. She was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church in Covington. She enjoyed going to yard sales, cook-outs and weekends at Lake Shafer.
Surviving along with her husband are her parents, of Lafayette; a daughter, Brandi Mitton of Attica; two sons, Jimmy (wife-Koa) Mitton of Covington and Robert (wife-Amber) Mitton of Attica; two sisters, Rachel (husband-Johnny) Oakes and Kay (husband-Harvey) Jones, both of Lafayette; a brother, William Harold “Jack” (wife-Denise Deel) Jenkins, Jr. of Williamsport; 13 grandchildren and three special dogs, Buffy, Tessie and Norma Jean.
Services will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Saturday, January 27, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dan Jordan officiating. Burial will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to PETA.

Charles C. Dicken, Independence
Charles Curtis Dicken, 66, a long time Independence resident, and had been residing in Belton, TX, died in the emergency room of the Scott & White Hospital, Temple, TX, on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at 11:40 a.m.
Charles was born in Kansas City, MO, on August 22, 1940. He was the son of the late Clifford Dicken and Mable Lowder Dicken Brown. He was raised and educated in Kansas City, MO, moving to Independence in 1987. He had resided in Belton, TX since 2006.
Charles worked as a welder for the Myers Steel Fabricating Plant in Attica for several years.
He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.
On January 6, 1959, Charles married Betty Lou Carnahan in Kansas City, MO. She preceded him in death on November 22, 2006.
Surviving are two sons, Charles (wife-Alane) Dicken, Jr., Phoenix, AZ; Dennis Dicken, Independence, IN; four daughters, Janette (Mark) Sloan, Monticello; Mary Ann (Michael) Coolidge, Belton, TX; Juanita (Craig) Ledbeter, Cork, Ireland; Patricia (Brian) Madden, Belton, TX; a brother, William Dicken, Kansas City, MO; a sister, Bea Scrivener, Kansas City, MO; twenty-seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carrie Faye Dicken and a sister, Nancy Buenger.
A gravesite service will be held in the Independence Cemetery, Independence, IN, on Saturday, June 30th, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Roland Romig officiating.

Susan R. (Curtis) Voorhees, Veedersburg
Susan R. (Curtis) Voorhees, 45, Veedersburg, died in the Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, on Sunday, September 9, 2007, at 9:03 p.m.
Susan was born in Danville, Illinois, on June 8, 1962. She was raised in Hillsboro, graduating from Fountain Central High School in 1980. She has resided in Veedersburg for the past 26 years.
Susan formerly worked as a waitress for 10 years at the Maple Corner Restaurant in Covington. More recently she worked at Krupp-Gerlach in Danville. She was a member of the Hillsboro Christian Church. She was a former member of the Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Veedersburg; enjoyed knitting, camping and fishing. She enjoyed attending garage sales and was an Indianapolis Colts fan. She had been active in the “Relay for Life”.
On October 17, 1981, Susan married Joe Voorhees in the Hillsboro Christian Church. He survives.
Also surviving are a son, Curtis Joseph “C.J.” Voorhees, Veedersburg; her parents, John and Carolyn Ashcraft Curtis, Hillsboro; a step daughter, Tiffany Vallie, Helena, MT; her two brothers, John Parker “P.J.” (Valerie) Curtis, Sherburn, MN; David Neil (Niky) Curtis, Waynetown; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Hillsboro Christian Church on Wednesday, Sept. 12th, from 5:00 p.m. until service time at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Traci Weatherly officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the “Relay for Life”.

Lowell R. Smith, Attica
Lowell R. Smith, 89, formerly of Attica and had been residing in Kentwood, Michigan, died at his residence on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 6:30 p.m.
Lowell was born in Boswell, Indiana, on January 20, 1918. He was the son of the late Clarence and Mamie Sue Lynch Smith. Lowell was raised in Boswell, graduating from Boswell High School. He attended Greenville College and Indiana State University. He moved to Ann Arbor, MI, in 1940 and worked for the University of Michigan Hospital. He later worked as a toll test man for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 36 years retiring in 1983. In 1985 he moved to Attica and lived until moving back to Michigan in 2006.
Lowell was a veterans of the U.S. Army Air Corps. serving during WW II. He saw action in the European Theater. At the time of his honorable discharge he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
While living in Ann Arbor, Lowell served as Mission Director for the State of Michigan United Methodist Churches. He was active volunteer for the American Red Cross and was presented the “Grey Lady Award” as the only male recipient for the American Red Cross. He also served as a former Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. While living in Attica, he was an active member of the Attica First United Methodist Church, where he served on several church committees. He was the financial secretary for the church for many years. He was a member of the Attica-Williamsport Rotary Club, serving as President and Treasurer for the Club.
On May 31, 1941, Lowell married Ruthella Marie Crigler in St. Louis, MO. She preceded Lowell in death on August 21, 2003.
Surviving are a daughter Carol Smith, Kentwood, MI; a son, Stephen (wife-Sherrin) Smith, Bronson, FL; a sister, Evelyn (husband-Frank) Kennedy, Shingle Springs, CA; special friends, Cheryl Kincade and Clark Dinwiddie, both of Attica; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Duane Smith.
Visitation will be held at the Attica First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 15th, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Mabry officiating. Burial with military services will follow in the Boswell Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Attica First United Methodist Church.
