Susan Mae Smith
BOURBON — Susan Mae Smith, 35, of Bourbon, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 7:35 p.m. at
Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
She is survived by her fiancé, Greg L. Kinsey of Bourbon; children: Kristina Carroll of
Etna Green, Christopher and Kirsten Carroll of Bourbon; parents, Frank and Odessa Smith of
New York; brothers: Keith Smith, Kenneth Smith and Gary Smith, all of New York; and sister,
Nancy Wade of New York.
Visitation is Thursday July 16 from 1 to 3 pm at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N.
Michigan St., Argos. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday July 16 at the funeral home.
Pauline I. Hoffman
PLYMOUTH — Pauline I. "Polly" Hoffman, age 93, of 2009 Felix Place, Plymouth, Ind., passed
away at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2009 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.
Pauline was born October 30, 1915, in Plymouth, to K. Clyde and Josephine (Hodges) Bennett.
Pauline and Ermid G. "Mud" Hoffman were united in marriage June 24, 1939 in Plymouth. They
had been married for 64 years, when Mud passed away April 29, 2003.
Polly was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a life-long member of the First Presbyterian
Church of Plymouth. While living in the Gary and Merrilville area, Polly spent many hours as a
“pink lady” volunteer at the hospitals. Polly was a loving and caring person. She reached out to
others, with love, in many ways.
She lived in her own home until the time of death. She still drove, which was a bone of
contention with her family, and still wanted to always “do something” for others.
Polly is survived by her extended family: Elizabeth Schlosser Thomas of Ariz.; Sam and Karen
Schlosser of Plymouth; William and Ann Schlosser of Plymouth; Jana Stoltenberg of
Indianapolis; Jay V. and Millicent Schlosser Eckhart of Columbus, Ohio; Jacob and Kathleen
Schlosser of Columbus; Phillip and Kathy Schlosser of Columbus; Ada Mae and Sid Richardson
of Okla.; Curtis and Margaret Holdridge of Okla.; and Laura Galt Snavely of Chicago, Ill.
Numerous great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ermid G. "Mud" Hoffman and her cousin,
John Schlosser.
A time of visiting with Polly’s family will be Monday, July 13, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Van
Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN, 46563, and Tuesday, July 14, 2009
from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services for Polly will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian
Church of Plymouth with the Rev. Jean Sparks officiating.
Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the First Presbyterian
Church, 401 N. Walnut St., Plymouth, IN, 46563.

Delores "Dee" Mae Irwin
ARGOS — Delores “Dee” Mae Irwin, 77, of Argos, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 8:27 p.m. at
Memorial Hospital of South Bend following a lengthy illness. She was born Jan. 17, 1932 in
Hammond to Rex E. and Mary I. (Sackville) Fites. On July 1, 1951 at Summit Chapel near
Bourbon, she married Gene Irwin, who preceded her in death May 27, 1996.
She had lived in the Argos community since 1951, but lived her entire life in Marshall County
area. She retired after 21 years at Citrus Hill Manufacturing, in Plymouth, and worked nearly five
years at Weight Watchers in Plymouth.
She was a graduate of Tippecanoe High School with the class of 1950. She was a member of
the Argos United Methodist Church and was actively involved with the choir and Spiritual Care
Giver. She also was a member of the Saint Joseph Hospital Auxiliary Unit #10, Marshall County
Christian Women’s Club, Sounds of Hope, Choir School (Board of Directors) and Marshall
County Meal-On-Wheels.
She is survived by her daughter, Colette (Gary) Knott of Zionsville; her son, Curtis Irwin of Etna
Green; grandsons: Aaron and Stefan Knott of Zionsville; sister, Mary (Bob) LaTurner and
husband Bob of Normal, Ill.; and brother, Donald (Sylvia) Fites and wife Sylvia of Peoria, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Friends may visit with the family Wednesday, July 15 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Earl-Grossman
Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, and one hour prior to the funeral service
at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16 at the Argos United Methodist
Church, 540 N. Michigan St., Argos, with Rev. Ken Walker and Rev. Jim Irwin officiating. Burial
will be at Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Argos United Methodist Church, 540 N. Michigan
St., Argos, IN 46501 or Epworth Forest Choir School, PO Box 759, LaPorte, IN 46352.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos.

Allen Edward Eastlund
PLYMOUTH – Allen Edward “Ed” Eastlund, of Parkview Ave., Plymouth, died in Pilgrim Manor,
at 11:25 a.m. Sunday, July 12, 2009.
Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Lucas, S.D., Ed was the son of Allen Hilder and Maude Inez Frevert
Eastlund. He graduated from Argos High School in 1936.
On May 9, 1970, in Nappanee, Ind., Ed and Marietta “Mary” Kaufman were married . Mary died in
2005.
Ed was retired, the former owner of Eastlund-Naylor Insurance agency in Nappanee, and he
also managed an apartment complex in Carrollton, Texas. For several years Ed worked at the
Marshall County Historical Museum.
He was a devoted member of the First United Church of Christ, and was a Kiwanian in
Nappanee. He loved working with his hands and was an expert woodworker. He also loved to cook.
Ed is survived by two sons: Gary (Linda) Eastlund of Leesburg, Ind., and Marvin (Phyllis)
Eastlundof Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, Sharon M. Gray of Lafayette, Ind.; two step-daughters:
Marcia (Ron) Martin of Plymouth, and Melody A. (Doug) Corey of Argos, also survive.
Several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren survive as well, together with three
sisters: Lillian (Ralph) Plummer of Indianapolis, Dorothy (Don) Robinson of Indianapolis, and
Lois Thompson of Pittsburg, Pa.
A step-brother, Eddie (Joan) Waltz and a step-sister, Barbara (James) Rick, both of Rochester
also survive.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters and a brother: Olive Rynearson and
Gladys Kamp, Eunice Kindig and Charles Eastlund.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to services in the First United
Church of Christ, 321 N. Center St., Plymouth at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009.
The Rev. Dr. Ron Liechty and Rev. Tom Padberg will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorials in Ed’s memory may be given to the First United Church of Christ.

Deborah Lynn Conklin
PLYMOUTH — Deborah Lynn Conklin, 49, of Plymouth, died Monday, July 13, 2009 at LaPorte
Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter, Amber McMillen of LaPaz; sons: Ricky (Stacy) Dixon of
Plymouth, Jason Bannister of Plymouth and Chad Isom of Plymouth; mother, Roberta Isom of
Plymouth; father, Donald E. Isom Sr. of Klamath Falls, Ore.; nine grandchildren; sisters: Susan
K. Marcum of West Virginia, Angela M. Masterson of Springtown, Texas and Cathy M. Jones of
West Virginia; and brothers: Donald E. Isom Jr. of Rochester, Michael J. Isom of West Virginia
and Robert E. Isom of Plymouth.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth, is in charge of the arrangements.

Carmen M. Nutt
ROCHESTER — Carmen M. Nutt, 96, of Rochester, died at 2:35 p.m. Monday July 13, 2009 at
Life Care Center of Rochester.
Survivors include her brother, Don Wert of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday July 16 at Odd Fellows cemetery,
Rochester.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Manitou Training Center, Rochester.

Mary L. Crago
BOURBON — Mary L. Crago, 72, a resident of Garden Court, Bourbon, passed away peacefully
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 in her sister’s home in Plymouth. She had been in failing health.
Mary was born the daughter of William West and Elva Rice West on March 5, 1937 at Wellsville,
Ohio.
A resident of the Bourbon area for the past 25 years, she had worked at Biomet Inc. of Warsaw
as an accounts receivable clerk. She graduated from Wells High School in Newell, W. Va. And
furthered her education at East Liverpool Business College in Ohio. Mary also enjoyed playing
the guitar, country music and her family. When she lived in West Virginia, she dispatched for the
Hancock County Sheriff Department.
Mary is survived by her children: daughter, Marcy Crago of Wierton, W. Va. And her grandson
Justin Crago; and son, Bret (Becky) Vanderham of New Cumberland, W. Va.
Other survivors include her three sisters: Diane Borroff of Plymouth, Elsie (Jim) Palmer and
Helen McClintick, all of St. Louis, Mo.; her two brothers: John (Joyce) West of Bourbon and
Denver West of Plymouth; along with several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her two sisters: Nancy Mosier and Pat Ruffing; and her brother,
Kenneth West.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Friday in the Deaton-Clemens Funeral
home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon, IN 46504. Funeral services will follow at noon at the funeral
home.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
The family requests that memorial contributions in her memory be made to the Center for
Hospice & Palliative Care or to the Marshall County Cancer Association.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Marietta Bender
BREMEN — Marietta Bender, 50, of Bremen, died at 11:48 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at home.
She is survived by her parents, Floyd S. and Anna Mae Bender of Bremen; sisters: Sharon
(Steve) Yoder of Nappanee, Sara Jean Bender, at home, Barbara (Devon) Miller of Nappanee,
Laura Bender, at home and Susan (Atlee) Yutzy of Nappanee; and brothers: Mark (Nancy)
Bender of Nappanee, Lavern (Rosanna) Bender of Bremen and Merle (Vonda) Bender of Nappanee.
Visitation was after 4 p.m. Thursday, July 16 and all day Friday, July 17 at the family residence,
5117 Beech Rd., Bremen. Services are Saturday, July 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Larry Helmuth
resident, 5807 Beech Rd., Bremen. Burial will be at Cedar Road Amish cemetery.
Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder, Funeral Home, Nap-panee, is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert L. Eckert
SOUTH BEND — Robert L. Eckert, 79, of Brookhurst Place, South Bend, passed away at Saint
Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, of natural causes. He was born in Plymouth Feb.
5, 1930 to Elmer and Frances (Knepper) Eckert, who preceded him in death.
On Oct. 4, 1952, he married the former Janet Soultz in Jonesboro, Ind. She survives with three
children: Tim (Marie) Eckert of South Bend, Renae (Albert) Freeman of Mishawaka and Kevin
(Alice) Eckert of Osceola. Six grandchildren, Claere, Gene, Angela, Ashley, Chris and Megan
also survive. Three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Little Gene and Micky, survive with one sister,
Anna Marie (Jay) Yarger; and a sister-in-law, Anita Eckert.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Caryl Eckert.
Mr. Eckert was a veteran of the National Guard and also was a member of the First Church of
the Nazarene, South Bend.
Funeral services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 17 at Bubb Funeral Chapel, Mishawaka,
and also for one hour prior to the services at the church Saturday. Entombment will follow the
service at Fairview cemetery, Mishawaka.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First
Church of the Nazarene, 51690 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46635.

Mary Jane Holland
PLYMOUTH — Mary Jane Holland, 87, 500 Miner St., Plymouth, passed peacefully in the
Elkhart Hospice House, surrounded by her children at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009.
Mary Jane was born in Hibbard, Ind., on Nov. 27, 1921. She was the daughter of Homer
Winfield and Edna Emmaline Pero Albert.
She graduated from Culver High School with the class of 1939, and from a beauty college in
South Bend shortly thereafter. She worked as a licensed beautician and manicurist for many
years and used her skills with her family and friends.
A very talented and independent woman, she lived in the same house for 62 years and drove a
car up until the time of her death.
On June 22, 1941, in LaPaz, Mary Jane and Eldon “Dutch” Clyde Holland were married . Eldon,
after 58 years of marriage, died on Aug. 22, 1989.
Mary Jane worked at Meck’s during WWII when her husband was in the service of their country.
A homemaker and mother for most of her life, she counted among her interests and activities
such things as baking, canning, quilting and bowling in a Plymouth league in the 1950s.
An accomplished seamstress, when her children were growing up, she made all of their clothes,
including prom dresses and school clothes. She sewed lap robes and the curtains for their home
and baked homemade sweet rolls for her family and their friends.
Mary Jane loved young and old people alike. She cared for them when they were sick and
nursed them back to health.
A lifelong member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, she was a faithful worker with Ladies
Aid.
Mary Jane is survived by two daughters, a son and a daughter-in-law. They are: Kathy Holland,
Highland, Ind., Jan (William) Berger, Valparaiso, Greg (Ann) Holland, Grovertown and Sandra
Holland, Plymouth.
Seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren,
together with a step-brother, Robert Albert, Culver, survive as well.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; three sisters: Frieda, Verda and
Mildred; and a son, David Lynn Holland; and a grandchild, William David Holland.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, in the
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Mary Jane will follow the visitation at 3 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev.
Tom Padberg, chaplain for the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., will officiate.
Interment will be in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Mary Jane’s memory may be made to the Elkhart Hospice House, 22579 Old
U.S. 20 East, Elkhart, IN 46516.
