Mary M. Grossman
PLYMOUTH — Mary M. Grossman, 86, passed away 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at her
son's residence in Kokomo.
She was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Bourbon, the daughter of the late Harvey E. and Ethel Irene
(Markley) Yarian. She married Therald W. Grossman at the Bourbon Parsonage on April 8,
1948. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1996, after 48 years of marriage.
She graduated from Bourbon High School in 1941. Mary retired in January 1988, as the
Financial Secretary from Plymouth Community Schools. She was a 50 year member of the
Eastern Star. One of her greatest enjoyments was volunteering. First United Methodist Church,
St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, and St. Joseph Health Center were the fortunate recipients
of her time beginning in 1997. She received the 2006 Volunteer of the Year by the Plymouth
Area Chamber of Commerce, was recognized for the most volunteer hours, and in 2008,
received an award at the Joey Awards by the Hospital Auxiliary.
When she wasn’t volunteering she could be found in the kitchen canning her many fruits and
vegetables or fixing a batch of her famous fried chicken, cookies, or one of her many pies.
Surviving are her two children, James and wife Janice Grossman, Kokomo; Susan and husband
Lawrence Duell, Lafayette; five grandchildren, Sara and husband Kerry Maggard, Anderson;
Travis and wife Beth Duell, West Lafayette; Kristen and husband Chad McDaniel, Frankton;
Jenny Duell, Lafayette; Jamie Grossman and fiancé Jason Taylor, Fishers; four great
granddaughters, Lauren Maggard, Whitney Duell, Emery Maggard, Mallory Duell; sister, Fern
and husband Roger Nifong, Bremen; sister-in-law LaVanch Yarian, Bremen; and 10 nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Willo Motz and Ruth Yarian, and a brother,
Earl Yarian.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at First United Methodist Church, 400 N.
Michigan St., Plymouth, IN 46563. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at the church.
Doctor Dean Fager will be officiating.
Burial will follow at New Oakhill cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First United Methodist Church or to
VNS Hospice, 2800 South Reed Road #2, Kokomo, IN 46902.
Arrangements were entrusted to Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, Kokomo.

Orval G. Snodgrass
WALKERTON — Orval G. Snodgrass, 69, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in his home. Mr.
Snodgrass was born Feb. 24, 1940 in Indianapolis to Clyde and Ruth (Everhart) Snodgrass and
lived in the area all of his life. On July 18, 1969 in Walkerton, he was married to the former
Charlene Kay Heil, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Dena Martin of Walkerton;
one son, Cam Snodgrass of Walkerton; two brothers: James Snodgrass of Plymouth and
Russell Snodgrass; one sister, Barbara Wiggins of Clinton; father-in-law, Walter "L" Heil and six
grandchildren.
Mr. Snodgrass was a maintenance supervisor at Modern Door Corp. in Walkerton for 16 years,
a U.S. Navy veteran from 1957-1963 and a member of the Walkerton American Legion Post #189.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Snodgrass may be made to The Center for Hospice &
Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637.

Mary Lou Brown
Mary Lou Brown, 81, of Plymouth Miller’s Merry Manor, formerly of Culver, crossed to the loving
arms of her Lord and Savior July 22, 2009.
“Lou” was born in Fort Wayne on June 6, 1928. She was the daughter of Hershal and Fern
Strang, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Dave (Karen) Brown of Great Valley, N.Y.; daughters: Deb (Dan)
Gross of Leiters Ford, Pat (Larry) Hisey of Rochester, and Sandy Brown (Bob Schilling) of
Culver; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lou was a member of the VFW. She occasionally attended Grace United Church of Christ.
Some of the jobs she had in her lifetime were working for a plumber, telephone operator, short
order cook at “The Shack” and taxi driver.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Grace United Church of
Christ in Culver.
Memorials may be given to Grace United Church of Christ or REAL services of Culver.
The Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, assisted in the arrangements.

Doris Davenport Patterson
WALKERTON — Doris Davenport Patterson, 85, died at 7:45 a.m. July 22, 2009 in Walkerton at
the home of her son, Hal.
Doris was born at home on the family farm in North Township, Marshall County on Feb. 9, 1924
to Foster Davenport and Ora Halt Davenport.
She graduated from Lapaz High School in 1941 and from Bethel College in 1968.
On June 10, 1941, Doris married Kenneth Patterson. Together, Doris and Ken farmed in Polk
Township, raised three children, taught in the LaPorte school district, and enjoyed retirement
together in Minong, Wis. And Avon Park, Fla. Until Kenneth’s death in 1993.
A devoted wife, a loving mother, and a dedicated elementary school teacher, Doris was also an
accomplished and much appreciated cook. She enjoyed the outdoors including fishing at her
beloved Horseshoe Lake and hunting mushrooms. Later in life, she enjoyed travel and golfing.
Doris is survived by her brother, Foster (Joy) Davenport and her two sons and daughters-in-law:
Hal and Denise Patterson of Walkerton and Sam Patterson and Christine Lac of Northfield,
Minn. Seven grandchildren survive: Todd (Julie) Peterson of Remington, Jeff (Eve) Patterson of
Waukee, Iowa, Kevin Patterson and Tyler Patterson of Walkerton, Andy (Francine) Patterson of
Sterling, Va., April (Brian) Patterson Gallagher of Livermore, Calif. And Parker Patterson of
Northfield, Minn. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren: Nicki Wasteney, Heidi Wasteney,
Tammy Linback, Nathaniel Lee, and Gabrielle Lee; three great-grandchildren: Ashley and Blake
Peterson, and Grace Gallagher; and one step-great-grandson Camden Linback.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Jane; her husband, Kenneth; her
brother, Don Davenport; and by her step-sister, Imogene McKesson.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 26, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home,
1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 27 at the funeral home, with visitation one hour
before the service. Burial to follow at Morris cemetery.
The family request in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care or to The American Cancer Society.

Robert H. Wenino
PLYMOUTH – Robert H. Wenino, 84, living for the past 34 years at 10107 Carriage Drive,
Plymouth, died in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, from a cancer related illness, at 12:45 a.m.
Thursday, July 23, 2009.
Robert was born on Dec. 30, 1924, in Chicago, Ill. He was the son of Harry E. and Marie E.
(Dehner) Wenino. The family resided in Milwaukee and Sheboygan Wis. before moving to
Champagne, Ill. and finally Plymouth where he graduated from Lincoln High School with the
class of 1943.
During World War II, Robert, a member of the United States Marine Corps., was stationed in
China.
On Nov. 6, 1949, in Monticello, Robert and Beverly D. Lintner were married .
He worked in the Bendix Corp.’s production of aviation products for over 44 years.
A true outdoorsman, Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved gardening and enjoyed
auto racing events along with his son Michael, who together attended the Indianapolis 500 for 40
years. The family enjoyed summer trips into the Michigan Upper Peninsula.
He was a member of the Roman Catholic Faith and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #741 in Plymouth.
Robert is survived by Beverly, his loving wife of almost 61 years, along with his son, Michael of
Plymouth and two daughters: Ricki (James) McFarlin of Ligonier and Sherry Lynn Moore,
Taylorville, N.C.
Four grandchildren survive, together with a brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Betty Wenino,
Plymouth, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister-in-law, Richard C. and Bona
Wenino.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home. The Rev. Father
William Kummer, pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Robert’s memory may be made to Mooseheart Child City & School,
Mooseheart, IL 60539.

Edward W. Gamble
ROCHESTER — Mr. Edward W. Gamble, 95, of 418 West 6th St., Rochester, passed away at
9:10 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009 at Hickory Creek at Rochester. Edward was born in Allenport,
Pa. on July 17, 1914, the son of the late Robert and Lillie Craven Gamble. He had lived in the
Rochester community for 70 years, coming from Hammond.
Ed and Orlepha Pontious were married on Nov. 25, 1939, in Hammond, she preceded in 1957.
He married Mary Louise Wolf on Aug. 14, 1965, in Rochester, she preceded in 1996.
As one of nine children Edward was a twin to his brother Edwin. He learned solid work ethic
early in life and was counted on to work and help his family out with chores. He was a member
of the Civilian Conservation Corp and a lifetime member of the UAW and Eagles. As an elder Ed
assisted with preaching responsibilities for the reorganized Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day
Saints near Hibbard. In 1969 he retired as a machinist from the Bendix Corporation .
Ed was a familiar face enjoying coffee and conversation in the earlier years Maggie’s, then the
Evergreen and most recently Tweedle D’s. As an inventor, Ed tinkered in his workshop creating
domestic inventions or modifying and fabricating present ones to meet his family’s needs for
whatever challenges life presented.
To relax he enjoyed watching television or simply observed the behaviors of his backyard friends
the birds and squirrels. Taking a ride through the countryside was also a favorite activity
immensely enjoyed by Ed.
Ed is survived by two sons: Fredrick Lee (Linda) Gamble of Pensacola, Fla. and John (Connie)
Gamble of Plymouth; two grandchildren: Carl (Terri) Gamble of Brighton, Iowa and Eric
(Jeanette) Gamble of Sebring, Fla.; six great-grandchildren: Evan, Ashley, Cody, Tyler,
Alexandra, Dakotah; sister, Kathryn (Robert) Houk of New Carlisle; three nieces: Donna Jean
(Ronnie) Miller, Colleen Dillard of Rochester and Jane Ann Hall of Plymouth.
He was preceded by his parents; wives; two sons in infancy; and seven brothers and sisters:
Edwin C., Elroy, Mary, Lillie, Rene, Betty and Delbert.
A celebration of the life of Ed Gamble will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 in the Good Family
Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St. Rochester, with Rev. Buck Padilla officiating. Friends may visit
with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
Interment will follow the services at the Leiters Ford cemetery.
Memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, United Ministries Food
Pantry, Rochester or Neighborhood Center, Plymouth.

David Lee Hand
PLYMOUTH - David Lee Hand, 73, a resident of Garden Court West in Plymouth, died at 9:25
a.m. July 24, 2009, at St Joseph’s Medical Center in South Bend.
He was born to Willard and Donna Hand in Bremen May 12, 1936.
David graduated from Bremen High School in 1955. He had been an area resident all of his life.
He had worked with his father doing lawn care. A Chicago Cubs fan all his life, he also enjoyed
the Chicago Bears and Bulls and Notre Dame teams.
David is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Herb Eveland, Plymouth; brothers:
Larry and Alice Hand, Copper Center, Alaska, Terry and Carol Hand, Copper Center, Alaska,
and Rex Hand, Harrison, Arkansas. He was close to two nephews in Plymouth: Rod and Jackie
Eveland, and Derek and Jodi Eveland.
He also is survived by many nieces and nephews in Alaska, Arkansas, and Florida. He was
preceded in death by his parents.
Interment will be in the Bremen cemetery, Bremen.
There will be no visitation. A private family memorial will be held.
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Carl Wayne Johnston
BOURBON — Carl Wayne Johnston, the man who always said “Mom learned me to work and I
learned to like it, " went to meet the Lord July 24, 2009.
He was looking forward to a glorious reunion with his wife Betty, his son Carl, Jr. and grandson
Joey Winkle who preceded him in death. Born Oct. 21, 1917, the first son of Alva and Lilly
(Wyman) Johnston, he is survived by a brother Don of Nappanee and was preceded in death by
a brother Maynard also of Nappanee.
He was devoted to his family and farming and felt privileged to make his living as a truck driver.
He made a significant impact on the many lives he touched including those who called him
Pappy; Arthur Winkle of Bourbon, Richard Winkle and Bob Johnston of Indianapolis and Carl
Johnston Jr., formerly of Culver, and especially those who lovingly referred to him as Daddy;
Sharon Kitchen Repovg and Janet Kitchen Simpson both of Indianapolis, and Sandy Kitchen
Knisely of Florida.
He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great grandchildren
as well as many friends and wonderful neighbors. He was a member of the
Plymouth Moose Lodge, Elks, Bourbon American Legion and the local Teamster Union #364.
When Carl was not driving truck or busy on the farm, he had a passion for “Big Band” music and
loved to dance. Although one of his favorite sayings was “Out of a little, take a little, and always
leave a little;" out of a little he took a little but blessed us with a “lot” of love, compassion and
humor.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 at the Deaton-Clemens
Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30 at the funeral home with Pastor
Tom Padberg of Hospice officiating.
Burial will be at the Stony Point cemetery, Etna Green.
The family requests that memorial contributions in his memory be made to Marshall County
Hospice and Palliative Care.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
