Robert James "Jim" Stapan
PLYMOUTH — Robert James “Jim” Stapan, 76, an area resident most of his life, went to be with
his Lord at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center, Plymouth.
The son of Elia and Rosanna Lazar Stapan, Jim was born in Chicago, Ill. on July 28, 1933.
He graduated from West High School in 1952.
On Nov. 15, 1959, Jim and Juanita R. Wallace were married in Culve. They had met at a square
dance, and loved to dance.
Jim had worked at Bendix from 1968 to 1988 as a Tool Grinder and Tool Maker. He later sold
Insurance for ten years. From 1999 to 2004, he was a greeter at Walmart, a job he truly enjoyed
since he was constantly meeting and talking to people.
He had been the Marshall County Veteran’s Officer since 2003. Jim was proud to have been in
the Marine Corps. during the Korean Conflict. He had served with the 3rd Marine Division, Fleet
Marine Force in Japan from Nov. 16, 1954 to July 3, 1956. After his first tour of duty, he reenlisted
for two years and was discharged as a Sergeant. As the Veteran’s Officer, he was very
proud to be able to help his fellow Veterans with whatever problem they had.
An active member of Sunrise Chapel, Jim also was a member of the American Legion, VFW,
and the Moose lodge, all of Plymouth.
One of Jim’s favorite past-times, besides being with his children and grandchildren, was eating
out. He was also an outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. His latest hobby was making
balloon animals for children.
Jim is survived by his wife, Juanita, with whom, he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage
in November, two daughters and two grandchildren. His daughters and their children are: Debra
and Roger Stockberger and their son, Eric James of Argos and Tami and Rick Schmidt and their
daughter, Ella Rose of Mishawaka.
Also surviving are a brother, George and Nina Stapan of Boca Raton, Fla. And two sisters:
Elaine Stapan and Mary and Paul Townsend, all of Lafayette.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and on Wednesday at the church, one hour
prior to the services.
The Plymouth Moose Lodge will have a service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, in the funeral home.
Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Rustin Krapfl, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug.
5, 2009 at Sunrise Chapel, Plymouth.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth, where Military Rites will be provided by The
Plymouth American Legion Post 27 and the Plymouth V.F.W. Post 1162.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sunrise Chapel or a Charity of the
donor’s choice.

Marvin E. Young
BOURBON — Marvin E. Young, 92, of Elm Road, Bourbon, died Friday, July 31 at St. Joseph
Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor R. (Woodcock); three sons: Kent Ellsworth (Diane) Young of
Beaufort, S.C., Dennis Lee (Nina) Young and Rex Alan (Judy) Young, all of Bourbon; nine
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Deaton-Clemens Funeral
Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery at Bourbon.
The family requests that memorial contributions in his memory be made to Bourbon Fire
Department or Bourbon Emergency Medical Services.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

J.C. Beck
Lifelong Culver resident J.C. Beck, formerly a custodian at the State Exchange Bank, passed
away Saturday, Aug. 1 at Miller's Merry Manor in Culver. He was 94 years old.
A softspoken family man with four children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, J.C.
entertained his family by playing guitar and singing old-time country and gospel favorites. A
strong role model, J.C. dedicated himself to his family, exemplifying the values of love, honesty,
and commitment.
J.C., son of Jacob and Luttie Beck, was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Monterey. During World War II,
J.C. served his country stateside, carpooling each day to the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant near
LaPorte.
J.C. married Olive Johnson in 1944, and followed his wartime service working at the Studebaker
and Bendix plants in South Bend. J.C. joined the staff of the State Exchange Bank of Culver in
1955, working in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1979. He continued working
part-time at Maxinkuckee Home Supply of Culver until his 75th birthday in 1989. J.C. was a
member of Grace United Church of Christ of Culver and held a number of posts there.
J.C. is survived by his wife, Olive Beck of Culver; son, Robert Thompson of Delong; daughter,
Janet Beck Baker of Culver; son Terry Beck (Marcia) of Defiance, Ohio; and son, Tim Beck
(Vickie) of Valparaiso. He is also survived by his granchildren: Don Baker (Janet Halling) of
Culver, Megan Beck of Crestview, Fla., Heath Beck of Port Huron, Mich., Julie Scott (Tony) of
Delong, and Kim VanSpeybroeck of Leiters Ford. He had one great-grandson, Graham Baker of
Culver. J.C. was preceded in death by his son Alan Beck who passed away in an auto accident
in 1958.
A time of visitation with the family will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at
the Grace United Church of Christ in Culver. Rev. Robin Keating will officiate the services at 2
p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Culver Masonic cemetery. Memorials may be given to
the Glaucoma Association of to Crace United Church of Christ.
The Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary A. Berger
BREMEN — Mary A. Berger, age 89, a resident of Bremen Health Care Facility, formerly of
Bourbon, passed away at 11:02 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 in Bremen Community Hospital.
Mary was born the daughter of and Walter Sponseller and Fredie Scott Jan. 29, 1920 in
Plymouth County, Iowa.
She was a resident of the Bourbon area most all her life. She married on her birthday, Jan. 29,
1945 to Paul A. Berger; he died in 1956.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol and husband Carl Butgereit of Bremen; two sons:
Michael and wife Linda Berger of Warsaw and Kris and wife Kimberly Berger of Bourbon. She
was also blessed with 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty and
husband Ted Carper of Greenville, S.C.
She was preceded in death by two granddaughters: Kathy and Lori; a step-son Robert; and two
brothers: Wayne and Bobbie.
She was a homemaker; she also worked at Dillingham’s Clothing Store and she retired from
Orthopedic Equipment Company in 1983. She was a member of the Bourbon First United
Methodist Church, formerly a member of the Bourbon Homemaker’s Club and Bourbon
Progress Club. She had a passion for animals, particularly her dog, “Keisha, ” her cats and she
liked to crochet.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday, Aug. 5 at the
Bourbon First United Methodist Church, 204 W. North St., Bourbon.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the
Summit Chapel cemetery in Bourbon.
The family requests that memorial contributions in her memory be made to Marshall County
Hospice and Palliative Care or Marshall County Humane Society.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donnie Miller
KNOX — Donnie Miller, 57, of Knox, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at Goshen Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Barb Miller; son, Adam Pittman of Knox; two daughters: Jennifer
Pittman of Plymouth and Rachel Miller of Knox; three brothers: Orban Barnett of Knox, Douglas
Miller of Michigan City, and Paul Miller of North Judson; and three sisters: Juanita Fugate of
Rochester, Kathy Braasch of Argos and Rhonda Bolen of Woodworth, La.
Visitation will take place Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at Braman and Son Memorial Chapel, 108 S.
Main St., Knox.
Funeral services will take place at Community Gospel Church, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at 1 p.m.

Margaret L. Milsher
PLYMOUTH — Margaret L. Mishler, 90, of 14659 Lincoln Highway West, Plymouth, passed
away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at 3:30 a.m. at her home.
Margaret was born on Dec. 20, 1918, in Plymouth, to Robert and Florence (Copp) White. She
married Otis Mishler on April 8, 1942. Otis passed away on Oct. 6, 1957.
Over the years Margaret worked in the accounting office of various businesses, was a clerk at
Miller's Shoe Store, in Plymouth, and worked at the meat counter at Price's Abattoir, in
Plymouth. Her last job was taking care of pre-school children. She was a lifetime member of the
Order of Eastern Star in Cambridge City, Indiana.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Forsythe of Plymouth; her son, Bill (Connie) Mishler
of Woodstock, Ga.; her sister Florencedna Heiman of Elkhart; her brothers: Robert White of
Plymouth and Don White of Elkhart; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, David in 2007; her brothers, Leonard and Howard; and
her sisters, Nellie, Marjorie, and Norma.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral
Home, in Plymouth, with Pastor Arnold Smith, from Walkerton, officiating. Burial will in New Oak
Hill cemetery, Plymouth.
Friends and family are invited to a time of visiting with the Mishler family on Tuesday, Aug. 4,
2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, IN 46563.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Center for Hospice and Palliative
Care, 112 S. Center St., Plymouth, IN 46563.

Ned L. Hoover
ETNA GREEN — Ned L. Hoover, 72, of Etna Green, died Monday, Aug. 3 at 11:25 p.m. at home.
He is survived by his daughter, Marla A. (Hoover) and husband Andrew Jennings of Menton;
son, Mark A. (Candy S.) Hoover of Mammoth Spring, Ark.; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren;
and sisters: Dorothy (Ralph) Greene of Elkhart and Anita (Wendell) Sheets of Bourbon.
Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home,
Bourbon. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Etna Green cemetery.

Rev. Stanley L. Lawrence
PLYMOUTH — Former longtime pastor of the Plymouth North Salem Church of God, Rev.
Stanley L. “Stan” Lawrence, 81, passed away Aug. 4 at Harrison Medical Center, Port Orchard, Wash.
He was born Dec. 21, 1927 to Elmer and Marjory Lawrence, New Paris, Ohio. He graduated
from New Madison High School, New Madison, Ohio and then married Hilda Welker Aug. 25, 1951.
In 1954, Stan graduated from Oregon Bible College in Oregon, Ill. He served as pastor for 37
years to churches in Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, and Indiana. In 2004, he retired from the ministry
and the North Salem Church of God in Plymouth and moved to Port Orchard to be near his son
and family.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda; son Bernie (Denise) of Port Orchard; brother, Robert (June) of
New Madison, Ohio; granddaughters Sarah and Holly, and step-granddaughters Kelsy and Abby
Stan loved Bible study, playing dominoes, basketball games, working at Conifer Ridge
Apartments — especially on the riding mower - and being taxi driver for his granddaughters.
Memorial services were held Sunday, Aug. 23 at 2:30 p.m. in Port Orchard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Parkinson Research Foundation, P.O. Box
20256, Sarasota, FLA, 34276 or the charity of your choice.
Condolences may be sent to the family c/o 1721 Fircrest Drive, SE, Apt. #208, Port Orchard,

Neva Guernsey Paulding
PLYMOUTH — Neva Guernsey Paulding, 98, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth.
Survivors include two daughters: Anita Smith of Woodland, Calif. And Martha Beaird of Peoria,
Ill.; one son, Wilbert Guernsey of Plymouth; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. (Central Time) in Rannells Funeral Home,
Hamlet Chapel. Burial will be at the Eagle Creek cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 11 a.m.
CDT until the time of services.

Kathleen L. Tucker
PLYMOUTH — Kathleen L. Tucker, 61, died at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 at Pilgrim
Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth.
She is survived by her son, William Pace of Plymouth; her daughter, Doris (Toby) Manzer of
Plymouth; and her brothers: Terry Greene of Walkerton and Tim Greene of Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth.
Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 7 at the funeral home.
