Ruth Elizabeth (Bossert) Uebel
CULVER — On Sept. 24, 2009, Ruth Elizabeth (Bossert) Uebel passed away at Millers Merry
Manor in Culver, Ind. where she had been a resident for the past two and a half years.
Ruth had been a part of education in Indiana throughout her life. She was born in Laurel, Ind.
Feb. 21, 1917 to Michael and Laura (Wolber) Bossert. Her father later was the County
Superintendent of Schools in Franklin County and her mother had been a school teacher. She
began teaching in a one-room school house in the “Pocket” area of Franklin County in 1937
where she got extra pay for coming in early and stoking the pot-bellied stove. She later taught
second grade in a more modern classroom in Brookville, Ind.
She gave up being a classroom teacher when she married Lt. Martin Uebel in 1945 and moved
to Culver. Before her “retirement” she was an active part of the Culver Academies, worked parttime
in the Culver Academy library and was a Sunday School teacher for many years at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Culver.
In her first year at Indiana University she attended on a $25 county scholarship and lived in the
home of the basketball coach of that era, Everett Dean. There she took care of the Dean’s
daughters so Mrs. Dean could attend the basketball games. During her years at IU she had the
noted Alfred Kinsey as a professor. Ruth graduated from Indiana University where she met
Martin in 1942.
She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church (Culver) and was the Zone President of
the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League in the 1960s. She loved gardening which she did until
her 88th year. She also loved to read and made trips with her husband and family throughout the
United States and Europe.
Ruth’s husband, Martin, of 62 years preceded her in death in 2008. She was also preceded in
death by her brother Robert Bossert.
She is survived by her sister, Frances Gilbert of Powell, Ohio. She is also survived by sons
David (Judy) of Colorado and Mark (Dawn) of Martinsville, Ind.; three grandchildren: Ryan
(Nicole) Uebel of Granger, LT jg Matthew Uebel, USN of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Amy
Elizabeth Uebel of Mystic, Connecticut and two great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Lauren Uebel
along with beloved nieces and nephews.
Viewing hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Culver.
A Christian funeral service will be Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at 9 a.m. EDT, also at Trinity,
conducted by Rev. K.C. Dehning. A graveside service and burial will be at 3 p.m. that same day
in Maple Grove cemetery in Brookville, Ind. alongside the graves of Martin and her parents.
Gifts in her memory may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Culver Academies
Scholarship Fund.
The Odom Funeral Home, Culver, is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda (Jeannie) Knowlton
WALKERTON — Wanda (Jeannie) Knowlton, 59, of Walkerton, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.
She is survived by her son, David Michael (Becky) Knowlton of Walkerton; a daughter, Michele
(Jerry) Schultz of Walkerton; two brothers: Donnie (Nancy) Loehr and Gary Loehr, all of Curtis,
Mich.; four sisters: Shirley Lute of Walkerton, Marilyn (Don) Nowatzke of Hamlet, Judy Wallace
and Dora (Jon) Soder of Curtis, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday, Sept. 30 at
Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, 408 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Woodlawn cemetery.

Eva Fae Leap
CULVER — Eva Fae Leap, 89, of Culver went to be with her Lord at 10:06 p.m., Friday, Sept.
25, 2009 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
Born Sept. 6, 1920 near Jubilee school east of Kewanna in Fulton County, she was the daughter
of the late Loran and Floy (Caldwell) Leap. She lived in Aubenaubee Township until 1970 when
she moved to Culver.
Eva was a 1936 Leiters Ford High School graduate.
She was a member and pianist at Zion Gospel Chapel until it closed and she then attended
Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Culver for the last 10 years. Eva was very devoted to her
family, she loved animals, music, flowers and gardening.
She retired in 1976 from Ball Band Company now known as Uniroyal in Mishawaka to where she
commuted weekly for more than 33 years.
Survivors include sister in law, Gladys Leap of Culver; six nieces and nephews: Ann Blair of
Mentone, John Leap and wife Debbie of Rochester, Patsy Holcomb and husband Jerry of
Anderson, Luanne Phillips of Fairborn, Ohio, Leon Sims and friend Brenda of Burr Oak and
Loran Sims and wife Linda of Warsaw. She is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Treva Leap; sister, Beulah Adams; sister, Frances
Sims; and brother, Manson Leap.
Graveside Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Citizens I.O.O.F. cemetery
in Kewanna with Pastor Ron Lewellen officiating.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, South Main St.,
Culver, IN, 46511.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, 123 E. Main
St., Kewanna.

Walter E. Winenger
SOUTH BEND — Walter E. Winenger, 68, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at home. He is survived
by his wife, Maryann; four daughters: Pamela Fulmer and Kristi Winenger, both of Granger and
Kimberly Winenger and Kellie Wukovits, both of South Bend; a son, James Winenger of South
Bend; five grandchildren and sister, Donna Yeager of South Bend.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at Palmer Funeral Home, Hickey
Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 1701 Miami
St., South Bend.
Contributions in memory of Walter E. Winenger may be made to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN, 46637.

Roger A. Phillips
PLYMOUTH — Roger A. Phillips, 78, 11146 Redwood Road, Plymouth, passed away Saturday,
Sept. 26, 2009, at 12:25 a.m., at the Bremen Health Care Center, in Bremen, after battling
cancer.
He was born Aug. 8, 1931, in Ironton, Mo., to George and Catherine (Staab) Phillips. Roger
proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On December 31,
1955, in Hamlet, Roger and Jeannette Nettrouer were united in marriage.
Roger worked for NIPSCO for 35 years. He was a member of the Mentone Flying Club and
enjoyed flying. He also thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and bowling. Roger loved spending
precious time with his grandchildren.
Roger is survived by his wife, of 53 years, Jeannette Phillips; their daughter, Dawn (Matt) Garver
of Plymouth; their son, James (Brenda) Phillips, of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren;
his sisters: Barbara Henson and Kay Hillman; and his brothers: Sonny Phillips
and Robert Phillips.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, George and Catherine Phillips; a son, Tod Phillips;
his sisters: Dorothy Howard and Faye Davis; and his brother, Donald Phillips.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like for memorials to be given to the Marshall County Cancer
Association.

Kimberly Christine Tanner
FRANCESVILLE — Kimberly Christine Tanner, 46, died Sunday, Sept. 27 at St. Vincent
Hospital, Indianapolis.
She is survived by her husband, Mark; father, Stephen Thrall of Kenosha, Wisc.; mother, Sharon
Lemeron of Francesville; a son, Mark (Linda) Tanner Jr. of Francesville; a daughter, Tammy
Tanner of Francesville; a brother, Stephen Thrall of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters: Kelly Kainer
of Victoria, Texas and Jennifer (Michael) Gunia of Marion, Iowa; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kline Medaryville Mortuary and
Cremation Service, 514 E. Main St., Medaryville.
Funeral services will take place Thursday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Medaryville Christian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Medaryville Christian Church.

Naomi Ruth Brockey
ROCHESTER — Naomi Ruth Brockey, 91, of Rochester, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at 8:25
p.m. at her residence.
She is survived by two sons: James W. (Judy) Green Teel and John Green of Rochester; a stepdaughter,
Lynette Brugh of Rochester; a step-son, James (Becky) Brockey of Flower Mound,
Texas; a sister: Mary (Francis) Hudkins of Bruce Lake Station; six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren;
five step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 and one hour prior to the services
Friday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made in her name to The Women of the Moose or to Hope Hospice of Fulton

Donald Dimmitt
ARGOS — Donald Dimmitt, 74, of Argos, died of congestive heart and kidney failure in Miller’s
Merry Manor at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009.
Don referred to himself as the “biggest junk man in Indiana, ” standing 6-foot-8 in his work boots.
He was born the son of Paul W. and Alta Walters Dimmitt in Plymouth, IN. on December 29, 1934.
He graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1953, and served in the United
States Army from 1957 to 1963.
On Nov. 15, 1959, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, Don and Carolyn Long were married .
He started his Dimmitt’s Salvage Yard north of Argos on Old 31 in 1955, and was the owner and
operator for more than 50 years.
A history buff, he loved cars, antiques and fishing.
He bought more than 40, 000 cars in the years he was in business. He made his living selling
parts off of them. Eventually, he had the biggest home-owned junkyard in Indiana.
He often said, “as long as you junk, you’ll never go hungry.”
Don is survived by Carolyn, his wife of almost 50 years and by a daughter and a son. His
daughter is Barbara (Lonnie) Harner, Plymouth, and his son is Steven (Gail) Dimmitt, Argos.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lewis E. Dimmitt.
Friends may visit with the family and share their memories of Don Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, from
4 to 8 p.m. in the House of Prayer United Pentecostal Church, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail,
Plymouth.
Funeral services for Don will be Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. in the House of Prayer United
Pentecostal Church. The Rev. Ron Humphrey, pastor of the church, will officiate.
Burial will be in the New Oakhill cemetery with military honors accorded by the Plymouth VFW
and the American Legion.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials in Don’s memory may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

Robert W., Sr. Hoffer
NAPPANEE — Robert W. Hoffer Sr., 81, of Nappanee, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at Our
Lady of Peace Hospital, South Bend.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Hoffer; daughter, Joni Hoffer of Evanston, Ill.; sons: Robert
(Denise) Hoffer Jr. of Goshen and Craig Hoffer of Elkhart; and a grandson.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 at Nappanee Missionary
Church Chapel and one hour prior to services Friday.
Funeral services will take place Friday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at the church.
Burial will follow at Union Center cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Nappanee Missionary Church "No Green Beans, " or the Center
for Hospice and Palliative Care.
Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee, was entrusted with
arrangements.

Leon Jakubiec
MEDINA, OHIO — Leon Jakubiec, 82, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 in Wooster, Ohio.
He is survived by a daughter, Laurie Wilford of Elk Creek, Mo.; a son, Robert Jakubiec of
Medina, Ohio; a sister, Jane Macizszek of Hampshire, Ill. And two grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel Thursday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 8
p.m. CDT and Friday 10 to 11:30 a.m. CDT at the funeral home.
A Rosary service will be held Thursday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 2 at noon (Central Time) at Holy Cross
Church of Hamlet.
Burial will follow at the Holy Cross cemetery.
