KNOX — Lola M. Hartley, 76, of Golden Living Center, Knox, died March 10, 2008 in Starke
Memorial Hospital, Knox.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Snowdon of Hamlet; sons: Gary Hartley of Jacksonville,
Fla. and James Hartley of Trinidad, Colo.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters:
Eulaila Maxwell and Wanetah Webb, both of Terre Haute, Mary Ward of Indianapolis and Ida
Jackson of Nevada.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Cremation will take place.
Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, is handling the arrangements.

Richard Philip Hummel
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Richard Philip Hummel, 84, of Chattanooga, Tenn. died March 10,
2008 at Erlanger Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn.
He is survived by a son, David (Donna) Hummel of Missouri City, Texas; and daughters:
Rebecca “Becky” Johnson of Oakdale and Martha Ann (Greg) of Chattanooga, Tenn.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Woodland, 15697 New Rd., Mishawaka. A lunch and fellowship will follow.
Interment of his cremated remains will take place following the luncheon at noon.
Memorials may be made to the Russian Ministry Association Fund c/o St. Paul Lutheran Church,
Woodland, 15697 New Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46544.
The Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen, is assisting with arrangements
Richard Philip Hummel, 84, died Monday, March 10 in Erlanger Hospital, Chattanooga, Tenn.
He is survived by son, David; daughters: Rebecca and Martha; daughter-in-law, Susan Hale
Hummel; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in May at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church (Woodland) in Mishawaka.
The Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen, is assisting with arrangements.

Della K. Davis
SOUTH BEND — Della K. Davis, 82, formerly of South Bend, died at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March
11, 2008 at the Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth.
She is survived by daughters: Patricia J. (Race) Hickman of Lakeville and Nancy A. (Gifford)
Torbenson of South Bend; sons: Gerald L. Davis of Lakeville and William E. (Deborah) Davis of
Plymouth; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters:
Helen (Robert) Strong and Ruby (Clifford) Daniels, both of South Bend; and one sister-in-law,
Jean Smith of Colorado.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 15 at the Palmer Funeral Home,
Lakeville. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn cemetery, South Bend.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 14 at the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Services, 922 E. Colfax, South Bend, IN 46617 or to
the charity of the donor’s choice.

Lelia B. Matzat
NORTH JUDSON — Lelia B. Matzat, 84, of North Judson, died Tuesday, March 11 at home.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Matzat of North Judson; daughters: Jane Radtke of
Griffith, Patty Downs of Plymouth and Lois Nielsen of Bremen; son, James Matzat of Castle
Rock, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Visitation is Friday, March 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. CDT at the O’Donnell Funeral Home, North
Judson, and after 10 a.m. CDT Saturday, March 15 at the church. Funeral services are
Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter Lutheran Church, North Judson.
Burial will be at Highland cemetery.

Mitchell R. Elsea
CULVER — Mitchell R. Elsea, 63, of Culver, died on March 12, 2008 at 9: 15 p.m. at his home in Burr Oak.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Elsea of Culver; stepson, Brian K. (Deb) Cites of Nappanee;
daughters: Linda Bradford of Plymouth, Michelle (Denver) Annis of Culver and Rebecca (Brian)
Shepard of Knox; brothers: Charles Elsea of Kentucky and Thomas Elsea of Nappanee; sisters:
Mae Powers and Ollie Polard of Clarksville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be a visitation with the family at the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, on Saturday,
March 15 from 3 to 6 p.m. EDT. There will be no services.

William E. Metcalf
NORTH WEBSTER – William E. (Bill) Metcalf, 89, of North Webster, died at 8: 10 p.m.
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake.
He is survived by: his wife, E. Lunetta Metcalf of Winona Lake; one son, Philip L. (Karilyn)
Metcalf of North Webster; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren;
and niece, Mrs. Jack (Jenny) Greenlee of Plymouth.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 at the Owen Family Funeral Home,
1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday March 17 at
the First Baptist Church of Oswego, 2985 E. Church St., Oswego.
Burial will follow at the Oak Grove cemetery in North Webster with full military graveside rites by
the North Webster American Legion Post 253.
Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Oswego or the North Webster Fire
Department. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and church.

Dale M. Bratt
KNOX — Dale M. Bratt, 67, died March 13, 2008 in Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Eckstein; one step-daughter, Sue Heck of Monon; one
step-son, Pete Bradley of Knox; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, June
Jeffers, Joy Powers and Doris McCallister, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Darrell Bratt of Michigan.
Brat was a retired employee of G.T.E. and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a member of the
Knox American Legion.
Visitation took place on Sunday, March 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel.
Funeral services will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. (CDT) at the funeral home

Olive Shaffer
BOURBON — Olive Shaffer, 91, of Bourbon, died Thursday, March 13 at 9: 25 p.m. at her daughter’s home.
She was born on Nov. 14, 1916, in Marshall County, Indiana, to Simon and Lillian (Rensberger)
Cudney. Olive and Carroll Lotz were married on Nov. 24, 1934. Carroll passed away on Oct. 20, 1944.
Olive also had been married to Clifford Kennedy and Bill Lowry. On Oct. 5, 1986, Olive and
Howard Shaffer were married . He preceded her in death.
Shaffer had been a cook at the Golden Grill Restaurant in Plymouth, Chuck and Marie s
Restaurant in Plymouth and Mundy’s Restaurant in Plymouth. She enjoyed making†quilts for her family.
She belonged to the Blissville Church of the Brethren, Plymouth.
She is survived by her three daughters: Ruth L. Martin of Elkhart, Norma J. Lemler of Bourbon
and Nancy S. Garbison of LaPaz; a son, Kenneth (Penny) Kennedy of Plymouth; 21
grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol; four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at Van Gilder Funeral Home,
Plymouth, with the Rev. Dester Cummins officiating.
Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton.
A time of sharing memories with Olive s Family will be on Monday, March 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at
the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 4204, South
Bend, IN 46601, or to Starke County Hospice.

Genevieve M. Hoke
PLYMOUTH — Genevieve M. Hoke, 93, died at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, of natural
causes at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2008.
Born in Chicago on June 30, 1914, she was the daughter of Frank W. and Jenny M. Chamberlain Backus.
When she was 8 years old, the family moved to West Township. She lived there until entering
the nursing home in January of 2004.
Genevieve attended Plymouth schools.
On Jan. 31, 1934, in Plymouth, Genevieve and Francis Marion Hoke were married .
A homemaker, she had been a resident of the Plymouth area since 1923, coming from Chicago.
Part of a very talented and musical family, Genevieve played the violin, the piano and the accordion.
She enjoyed going to auctions and collecting antiques.
Genevieve is survived by Lorraine Hoke, Plymouth, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren:
Steve (Gail) Hoke, Plymouth and Diana (Roger) Walker of Leiters Ford; a great-granddaughter,
Sarah Rakich and two great-grandsons; Ben and Kacy Wright and their son, Addison, of Bremen
and Andy Wright and his fiancée Deb Wulliman and their daughter, Raygan Wright, of Warsaw,
survive as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and their son, Lyle Hoke.
Friends are invited to celebrate Genevieve’s life with her family from 12 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday,
March 18, 2008, at the New Oakhill Chapel, Plymouth.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. The Rev. Charles Krieg will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Marshall County Humane Society; it was very special to Genevieve.

Tressie Myers
THREE RIVERS, Mich. — Tressie Myers, 95, formerly of Marshall County, died Friday, March 14 at Riverview Manor.
She is survived by daughter Marilyn Miller of Three Rivers, son Paul (Verma) Myers of Tulsa,
sister Elnora Lackey of Conway, S.C., sister-in-law Ruth Grossman of Rochester, two
grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 20 N.
Michigan St., Argos.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.
Hohner Funeral Home, Three Rivers, Mich. is in charge of local arrangements.

Helen I. Weber
BREMEN — Helen I. Weber, 94, of Bremen, died Friday, March 14 at 4: 30 a.m. at Bremen
Health Care Center of natural causes.
She is survived by a daughter, Millie Goff of Wakarusa; a grandson, Jimmy (Rita) Goff of
Wakarusa; a granddaughter, Terri (Charlie) Colbourne of Carmel and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church,
Woodland and one hour before services Tuesday.
Funeral services will take place Tuesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the church with burial to follow
at St. Paul cemetery, Woodland.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mishawaka, or Bremen Health Care, Bremen.
Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen is handling arrangements.

Gladys H. Bassett
LAKEVILLE — Gladys H. Bassett, 100, of St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend,
formerly of Lakeville, died at 7: 45 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008.
She is survived by her daughter, Marijane (Marlin) Debban of Lakeville; her son, John A. (Carol)
Bassett of San Ramon, Calif.; five grandchildren: Denise (David) Stephanides of Naperville, Ill.,
Pamela (Andrew) Hahn of Omaha, Neb., Jeffrey Bassett of Vista, Calif., David (Amy) Bassett of
Vista Calif., and Matthew Bassett of San Ramon, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren: Derek and Linnea Bassett.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S.
Michigan St., Lakeville, and from 2 to 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday in the chapel at Acacia Park
cemetery, 7800 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago. Funeral services will be held at Acacia Park
cemetery with burial following.
Memorial contributions may be made to Miseracordia Children’s Home, 6300 North Ridge
Avenue, Chicago, IL 60660-1017, or Young Life Capernaum Ministries, P.O. Box 520, Colorado Springs, CO.

Danny R. Ehlinger
KNOX — Danny R. Ehlinger, 57, of Knox, died Saturday, March 15 at noon at Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two sons: Guy Edward Ehlinger of Manistee, Mich. and
Danny Ray Ehlinger Jr. of Constantine, Mich.; a daughter, Shannon Shepherd of Culver; a
brother: Donnie (Betty) Ehlinger of Knox and five grandchildren.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 18 from 2 to 8 p.m. (EDT) and one hour before
services Wednesday at noon (EDT) at Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver.
Burial will follow at Moon cemetery, Leiters Ford.

William Emanuel Huddleston
ROCHESTER — William “Bill” Emanuel Huddleston, 92, of Rochester, died at 5: 51 a.m.
Saturday, March 15 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
He is survived by a son, Billy (Penney) Huddleston of Rochester; two grandchildren; brother-in-law,
Tommy Dean (Patricia) Lytle of Indianapolis; and sister-in-law, Angie (John) Nichols of Rochester.
Memorial services will be at a later date.
The Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, is in charge of the arrangements.

George "Tom" Ferguson
BREMEN — George “Tom” Ferguson, 58, of Bremen died Monday, March 17 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Ferguson of Bremen; daughter, Kristina (Rich) Vandiver of
Bremen, sons: Jeffrey Ferguson, currently serving in the military overseas, Jason Ferguson of
Parma, Ohio, and Jonathon Ferguson at home; three grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at the Mishler Funeral Home in
Bremen. Cremation will take place following visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to The Family Readiness Group (FRG) at the Warsaw Armory or to
Community Hospital of Bremen (specifically toward the purchase of comfortable recliners in patient rooms).
