Clem H., Jr. Miller
ROCHESTER — Clem H. Miller Jr., 81, of Rochester, died Thursday, April 17 at 2: 30 p.m. at
Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.
Miller was born June 25, 1926 to Clem and Elba (Hott) Miller Sr. in Monterey and lived in the
Rochester area since 1963. He was a 1944 graduate of Argos High School.
He married Jean I. Neidlinger on Nov. 27, 1947 at the Argos United Methodist Church. He and
his wife’s dreams came true with the acquisition of their farm ground south of Rochester which
they purchased from the McMahon family in 1962.
In addition to grain operations, Miller loved raising Black Angus and oversaw, bred and raised a
fine herd. He also raised incredible sweet corn and was known for his delicious strawberries. He
and Jean often went to Michigan for peaches, cherries and raspberries.
Miller was a man who loved his land and his family. Many produce lovers will recall seeing Miller
and grandson Greg at the Miller Fresh Sweet Corn stand situated on Wabash Avenue and 18th
Street during the months of July through August.
He enjoyed the morning sales and seeing friends and customers their family pleased with their
highly sought after “Incredible Sweet Corn” and last summer, their delectable “Ambrosia Sweet
Corn.” From the late 1980s to the late 90s those who enjoyed strawberries will remember the
same location where Miller and his family harvested and sold strawberries.
During early spring, when temperatures would drop, Miller would stay up late at night to oversee
the irrigation system protecting the tender plants from frost. This year was no exception on the
farm as he assisted with preparations for the planting season.
Just last week he was pulling fence line with his Bobcat. With great pride this dedicated farmer
enjoyed observing the harvest riding high in the combine and planting crops on his shiny, red,
Case-International Harvestor. In the spring of the year the collection of Maple Syrup beckoned
Miller and his wife to Nappanee where they watched the processing of the sweet syrup.
While in Amish Country, Miller marveled and admired the working horses-especially the
Clydesdales and Belgians. As the patriarch of the family, Miller was loved and respected by his
children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
He instilled a love for the land, and work ethic for the family to follow with a special love only
shared by Grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Steve Fellers; a sister, Cleta Nelson and
a brother, Herman Miller.
He is survived by his wife, Jean of Rochester; a daughter, Eileen Fellers of Rochester; two sons:
Tom Miller and Charlie (Katie) Miller also of Rochester; a brother, Richard L. (Barbara) Miller of
Argos; six grandchildren: Brad (Kimi) Fellers of Rochester, Cory Fellers of Beaverton, Ore., Lori
Fellers of Rochester, Joe (Brianne) Miller of Rochester, Sarah Miller of Indianapolis and Greg
Miller of Rochester and one great-granddaughter, Courtney Fellers of Rochester.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.
Private, family, funeral services will be held with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at
Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the charity of one’s choice.
